Bill Clinton was in Jamaica last week, and he advised Caribbean governments to reduce costly dependence on imported fuels by turning to renewable energy:
Former United States president, Bill Clinton, is encouraging Jamaica and other Caribbean countries to become more self efficient in regard to energy generation.
Clinton made the call while delivering a lecture in Kingston on Monday night under the theme Embracing our Common Humanity.
The Jamaica Gleaner reported that Clinton disclosed that the Caribbean has the highest cost for electricity in the world, with Jamaicans paying three times more for the services than consumers in the United States.
He said that Caribbean governments need to utilise natural sources of energy in order to reduce dependency on expensive sources.
He also said that pursuing a path of using clean, renewable energy represents the greatest opportunity for economic and social growth for the Caribbean.
Diversified energy policy will help the Caribbean to become more competitive, Clinton said.
From the Jamaica Gleaner: In the presence of political leaders, past and present, Clinton, the 42nd US president, said that instead of relying on fuel they should put to good use the natural resource that is solar energy.
The Caribbean could be the first part of the world that could be entirely energy sufficient, and that could happen in Jamaica, he said.
