Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall reaches boiling point

Juggla has emerged as a dark horse in the competition

The exit of Gibralta and Professor Nuts' Wild Card Pick, Queen Doll, from the competition last week shows that the competition has reached boiling point. It was Gibralta who launched an uncharacteristic salvo two weeks ago when he tackled Chozenn, Juggla and Tanto Blacks in lyrical warfare.

The artiste who hails from Spanish Town proved that he had what it took to go toe to toe with any DJ on the Magnum Stage. He scorched the stage with lyrics like "...dem call up mi name and mek mi get cross... dem no bad like Gibralta mi bad like the navy," he continued "Tanto Blacks a only noise him love mek, if yuh follow him yuh gonna end up wid a bruk neck."

Despite these hard hitting lyrics, Gibralta was voted off the following week. This just shows how intense the competition has gotten; when a creditable artiste cannot find a space on the Magnum big stage.

Queen Doll who was Professor Nuts' Wild Card Pick did not fare any better as she too was voted off last week. She ran on stage with lyrics such as: "mi no waan no likkle boy fi ticklish me."

Despite getting kudos from Scatta, Miss Kitty and the Professor she did not tickle the voters and was sent packing. Judge Scatta says she is a good artiste and can go far: "She have a swagger, she has lyrics and she got a 75 per cent out of 100 and I know she can go far."

positive lyrics

With those two contestants voted off, this week two more will go home. Press Fyah has held his own with positive lyrics and a style that is so different from the other contestants in the competition. Juggla has emerged as a dark horse in the competition and threatens to turn the tables on the two front runners; Chozenn and Tanto Blacks, who have both maintained their lyrical potency and have carried the crowd over the last few weeks.

Based on the performance of these four princes left in the competition, the next three weeks will be hot with no one knowing who will go home next.

On the female side, Reggae Queen has emerged as one of the crowd favourites and over the last few weeks has consistently performed to the joy of the crowd gathered at Weekenz.

Before the rain, LA Lewis proclaimed that Reggae Queen had him drinking Magnum Tonic Wine 'nuff', and he liked everything about her. Despite breathing problems she has not faltered on the Magnum Stage.

That cannot be said, however, for her close rival Mysterious, who despite good performances has on a few occasions forgotten her lyrics. However, she has been returned to the Magnum stage again and again by her fans, which shows that she has a large following. Bumpa also has her eyes on the crown, her lyrics are always on point and she has been very consistent. Lyrics such as "Dem a hider but the truth still a spread wider...Tiger Woods still hide and cheat... Kartel still deh a gaza a hide and beat, Lisa still a hide and eat", have won her numerous fans.

has impressed

In the melee between Reggae Queen and Mysterious, Bumpa has remained above the fray although on some occasions she has made smart clandestine jabs at her fellow contestants.

Also in the mix is Gallawas who has impressed the judges week after week. This 17 year-old from Clarendon has held her own amongst much older contestants. Her lyrics are mature and more often than not, carry a message. These factors have endeared her to the fans and have brought her back week after week.

With eight contestants left in the competition and only three weeks left to the crowning of the 2010 Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall, the competition has heated up reaching boiling point and no one knows who will go home this week.

Watch Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall this Saturday at 9:30pm on TVJ to see who will not wear the crown.
