One of two Haitian women who are housed at the Port Antonio Seventh-day Adventist Church in Portland gave birth to a baby last Wednesday at the Port Antonio Hospital.

THE STAR was not able to ascertain the sex of the child but hospital sources, who are tight-lipped about the birth, have revealed that emergency surgery was carried out during the delivery.

According to a source at the hospital who asked not to be named, the woman was rushed to the medical facility shortly after 5 p.m last Wednesday, and spent the better part of four hours going through labour pains.

The source added that doctors took the decision to carry out the emergency surgery, and a Caesarean (C section) was done on the Haitian woman.

Meanwhile, hospital sources have also revealed that the baby is now in intensive care, and is being closely monitored.

And in light of the Haitian birth on Jamaica's soil, highly placed sources told THE STAR on Friday that a delegation from the United Nations visited Portland, and met with medical personnel, the Ministry of National Security and other state agencies.

It is not clear what was discussed, but according to the source, it is unlikely that it was sheer coincidence that the UN team arrived a day after the Haitian woman gave birth.

Thirty-one Haitians, including a one-month-old baby, who landed at Rock Point in St Thomas on April 10, and were transported to Portland, are now staying at the Portland church. The Haitians claim they are fleeing starvation and economic hardships in the earthquake-hit country.
