With her own designs, as well as some from other local and international collections, dancehall artiste Spice will launch Spicey Couture.
On Thursday, she will launch the store, which will be located in Mall Plaza, St Andrew. It will feature local designs from Spice's own collection - Spicey Couture, as well as White Skyy and Romeich Wear.
"Not a lot of people realise how talented Jamaican designers are. They just think as long as it's something from abroad, it has to be good and sometimes that's not the case. Sometimes, all these brands have going for them is the name and nothing else. So when I decided to open the store, endorsing Jamaican and Caribbean designs, it was something I had to do. We are talented people and it's time Jamaicans started to embrace their own," Spice told THE STAR.
international designs
However, there will be international designs at the store, there will also be collections likeLex Perry, Nzinga,Coogi, Ozzy Osbourne's Affliction, Beyoncé's House of Dereon, Nelly's Apple Bottoms, DKNY, Calvin Klein, True Religion and sneakers from Pastry. Spice also said she is trying to source outfits from Caribbean designers.
Spice, real name Grace Hamilton, said she decided to start her own collection because she has been designing for herself for a long time.
"I am the one who comes up with the designs and there is someone who sews the pieces. I've been doing itsince I was young. Whenever I needed to go to a party,I would think of the pieces and have them made," Spice said.
"So in truth, people have been seeing me in my own designs for a really long time. But after a while, I figured, why don'tI do it for myself instead of bringing it to people and then have them say that they are the designers? That didn't make sense, so here I am, launching Spicey Couture."
She said her line will cater to women only. There are T-shirts and semi-formal outfits.
little bit edgy
But one thing that Spice promises is difference.
"The clothes are classy and a little bit edgy.If it's one thing I know, it's thatwomen don't like going to thedance and seeing a next girl in the sameclothes. So with 'Spicey Couture' all thedesigns are different. Once you buy it, you know you won't see anyone else in it," Spice said.
She said she would love to add some children designs to the line but that would come later. In addition, further expansion of the Spicey Couture line will be determined by the feedback locally. At that point, Spice will look at the possibility of taking the line to a wider market.
Nonetheless, Spice promises affordability at Spicey Couture.
"We are trying to make items as affordable as possible, because we are trying to cater to everyone. Simply because the designs in the store are high fashion doesn't mean they should be too expensive," she said.
