Carlton Grant, son of deejay Spragga Benz, was to spend the brief remainder of the summer holidays with his family, including his father in England, and was set to leave yesterday.
However, this will never happen and travel plans will now have to be changed to funeral arrangements as the 17-year-old was fatally shot during an alleged shoot-out with the police.
The Constabulary Communication Network reported that about 11:50 p.m. on Saturday, members of a police party were on patrol along Church Street when two men were seen on a bicycle.
They were signalled to stop and they complied. However, one of the men pulled a gun and fired at the police. The fire was returned and the men ran. The area was searched and Grant was found suffering from gunshot wounds.
A 45 semi-automatic pistol was also allegedly taken from him. The injured Grant was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Bureau of Special Investigations has since been called in to probe the matter.
Spragga Benz, who also shares the same name as his son, could not be reached for comment.
However, THE STAR was told that upon being contacted via cellphone and informed of the death of his son, Spragga immediately hung up before returning the call moments later and remarked "when unnu get unnu facts straight call mi back."
An obviously distraught mother, Sharon Gapoor, while sitting in front of the Central Police Station on East Queen Street in downtown Kingston, moments after the killing, described her son as a very nice and jovial person.
She questioned the motives of the police, saying she could not see the reason for the police to kill her son and she has no idea why it happened. "Them kill him, and all now nobody can't tell me what happened to my son," said Gapoor.
Similarly, there were mixed feelings from residents of a nearby community who told a totally different tale of what happened. "Dem kill di likkle bwoy, a go him a go the party down a waterfront," one resident who claimed to be a witness told THE STAR. "Mi see when dem ask him to stop, di yute stop and put him hand in di air; him all say to dem that him nav nutten pon him."
His death comes as a surprise to everyone who knew Carlton, they voiced their opinions by expressing that being found with an illegal weapon was very much unbecoming of him.
"A lie them a tell, bout find gun," said another resident and close friend of Carlton's mother. "Di yute just get him CXC results, and is seven subjects him do and pass six."
Grant left Jamaica College in 2006 at the end of his fourth-form year and completed fifth form at Camperdown High School. His dream was to become an author, his mother said.
Spragga Benz is known for songs such as A1 Lover and Backshot featuring Lady Saw. He is also known for the role he played in the movie Shottas.
First of all I hope no one would be cold enough to spread this if it wasn't true. Second of all if it is tru R.I.P. to the yute and condolences to di family. Now on to di real issue. Mi see nuff people a seh di police dem weh dweet fi get di same ting and this may well be their just reward. However the real problem here is if he did have a gun on him it was perfectly legal for the police to shoot him as Jamaica has a law permitting the "Execution" by the police of any person found in possession of an illegal firearm. This is a terrible law. Especially since the "Criminal Cops" all carry a non police issue gun to plant on any poor soul they happen to kill whether on purpose or by accident. I think that is what needs to be changed because even if he did have a gun once he was disarmed and no longer a threat there was no need to kill him. Let us raise global awareness to this inhuman law and hopefully some day it will change. I bet if this law was repealed their would be less shootings of ghetto youths because the police wouldn't have this law to hide behind. Sorry for being so long winded but a ghetto mi come from and mi witness dis scenario nuff time. As mi read di story mi memba one time mi a ride mi bicycle (same like him) a guh check a ting and buck up inna police and soldier. Fortunately for me is a knife mi di have not a gun suh mi spend three night inna jail and dem let mi go wen dem fine out seh mi was di headboy fi a prominent high school and dem couldn't pin nuh real crime pon mi. BTW is dis Spragga son that played Young Wayne in Shattas?
