Judge to rule on 48-day detention

SENIOR RESIDENT Magistrate Glen Brown is to make a ruling today in connection with a man who has been detained at the Half-Way Tree Police Station lock-up for 48 days.

The man, who is a security guard, has not been taken before the court since he was detained on May 22. An identification parade has not been held and the man has not been charged with any offence.

He was taken into custody following a complaint that he committed a sexual offence.

Breach of rights

Defence lawyer Melrose Reid, who is representing the man, said his constitutional rights have been breached.

She sought the intervention of Glen Brown in having the man released from custody.

Reid spoke of attempts she made to have an identification parade held for the man but, to date, no parade has been held. She said she made three previous applications in court to have the man released from custody but was unsuccessful.

Senior RM Brown, after hearing an application yesterday, ordered that the man be taken to court today.
