JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two people were taken to an area hospital after being shot in front of a senior retirement community in the San Jose area Friday afternoon.
Police rushed to at a house in the 600 block of Galicia Road near San Jose and St. Augustine roads, where the shootings took place.
A short time after police arrived heavily armed and with K-9 units, homicide detectives descended on the scene.
Witnesses told Channel 4 they heard at least six shots fired.
One witness, Doris Drisson, said she was standing in her front yard when she heard the gunshots and man yelling for help.
"I heard a man on the ground over here yelling, 'Help me. Help me.' So, I went around the fence to look at what was wrong with him, and he had a bullet wound right in the middle of his chest. He said, 'I'm dying.' I said, 'No you're not just hold my hand. Stay with me. Don't go to sleep. Just talk to me.' He said, 'I'm going to die. I know I am,'" Drisson said.
She said her friends forced her to get away from the injured man because they were concerned that the shooter might still be in the area, where she said bullets fly too often.
"It's terrible -- the cars we see coming in and out here all the time with drugs. We call the police. We complain, and there's nothing they can do," Drisson said. "I felt sorry for that young man regardless because he's still a human being and he deserved something. I hope he's all right."
Jacksonville Sheriff's Office investigators said they have a lot of people to interview as they work to determine exactly what happened.
"We're not calling anyone a suspect right now. We have several people detained in all of the police cars you can see behind me. (We'll) take every single one of them down to the homicide office and interview them to try to get to the bottom of what's going on. As far as arrests, depending on what they say, we're not really sure right now," said JSO Lt. Pat Ivey.
On Friday night, one of the victims was in life-threatening condition. The other victim's injuries were much less serious. Neither of their names has been released.
