WESTERN BUREAU:

A craft vendor and her family in Lilliput, St James, escaped death yesterday morning when an out-of-control trailer, ploughed through her fence and stopped a metre from her bedroom.

"It was a pile of building blocks that stopped it from hitting the house," said Marcia Jacob, who was at home with her three-year-old son and spouse about 2 a.m., the time of the incident.

"I was sleeping and was awakened by the loud sound. When I looked through the window to see the vehicle on the road, it just appeared before me, it was frightening."

Pickup crushed

Dalvin Smith said his motor van that he had parked adjacent to the North Coast Highway was crushed.

"When me hear the sound and run out, me see the pickup under the trailer," he told The Gleaner.

Residents said the trailer was travelling towards Falmouth when it hit a parked truck and a car going in the opposite direction. According to them, the heavy unit then rammed into Smith's vehicle and stopped near the house.

The trailer's three occupants were taken to hospital where the driver was admitted. The Barrett Town police are investigating the incident.
