Granville top Portmore in penalty shoot-out

GRANVILLE of St. James yesterday booted defending champions Portmore United out of the COK Champions Cup Knockout quarter-finals 5-4 on penalties after the teams played to a 1-1 draw at the end of full and extra-time at the Sam Sharpe Teachers College in Montego Bay.

Granville, who beat St. James Premiership team Seba then Bath of St. Thomas 5-1 to advance to the quarter-finals, moved into the semi-finals alongside Tivoli Gardens, who edged Harbour View 1-0 at the Edward Seaga Stadium last night.

Tivoli and Granville join Waterhouse and Village United, who got past August Town and Humble Lion respectively on Wednesday to qualify for the April 20 semi-finals with the final set for May 4.

Granville made the semis after Davian Reid equalised in the 45th minute, cancelling Tyrone Sawyers' 21st minute goal.

The teams ended the second half and extra-time locked at 1-1. However, Premier League leaders Portmore cracked during the penalty shoot-out with Eric Vernon missing his team's second spot kick.

At Tivoli, Harbour View enjoyed the better of first half play but started wilting just before the break and were outplayed by the homesters after the resumption, leading to Navion Boyd's well taken 68th minute header.

With Harbour View's left side leaking like a sieve, Tivoli got their winning goal when substitute Jermaine Allen lobbed a cross inside for Boyd to outjump his markers and nod past Dwayne Miller.

However, the Stars of the East should have scored in the fourth minute when Rafeik Thomas got a sharp goalmouth chance but fired his shot against goalie Leon Gordon racing off his line inside the six-yard box.

Kavin Bryan also got a chance to put Harbour View ahead in the 30th minute but his fierce shot from 16 yards, off a pass from Jermaine Hue, was blocked by Gordon.

The tide changed after that and Tivoli took charge, sending a signal in the 43rd when Miller had to acrobatically tip Dwight Heron's square from the left.

Tivoli came out roaring for the second half and dominated Harbour View's left flank, launching raid after raid before getting their winning goal.

Substitute Jermaine Taylor sent the partisan home crowd screaming in the 78th, but his goal was called back for off-side after he converted a ball Miller spilled at his feet.

Kasai Hinds ensured maximum points for Tivoli a minute later, clearing Bryan's lob off the line with Gordon well beaten by the Harbour View forward.
