The ex-boyfriend of former Spelling Bee champion, Jody-Anne Maxwell, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday accused of assaulting her.

Adrian Marshall, a 28-year-old musician from Graham Heights, St Andrew, is accused of choking and biting Maxwell on the grounds of the Matilda's Corner Police Station. He was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm.

At the request of Maxwell, who is now an attorney-at-law, Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey made a no order in the case, as Maxwell and Marshall had settled the matter at the Dispute Resolution Foundation.

As a result, the court heard that Marshall had agreed to pay the complainant $23,100 for special damages and $250,000 for general damages for defamation of character, pain and suffering emotional distress. He also apologised to Maxwell in court.

Allegations are that on January 4, Marshall trailed Maxwell as she went to see her boyfriend. Upon leaving where her boyfriend was and driving on to Half-Way Tree Road, she noticed Marshall was following her and she drove to the Matilda's Corner Police Station.

The court heard that she exited the vehicle to enter into the station's guardroom when she was attacked, punched her in the face, choked and bitten on the left side of her neck.

It was further heard that the police came out the station and restrained Marshall before sending Maxwell to seek medical attention. He was later arrested and charged.
