A massive search of the Georgetown Prison yesterday to help clamp down on the illegality unearthed a number of prohibited items being possessed by prisoners. Sources at the prison yesterday told this publication that over 20 cell phones were taken away from prisoners. Ranks also seized over 45 improvised weapons from inmates.
A small quantity of marijuana was found in certain cells also. One senior officer at the prison said that prison officers and soldiers joined forces to search the maximum security jail.
Up to late Sunday afternoon, soldiers were on guard but eventually they retreated, leaving behind police and prison officers. No guns or ammunition were found during yesterdays search.
Officials rejected the suggestion that the search had anything to do with intelligence that persons were trying to free two of the three treason accused who are being housed at the Camp Street jail. Yesterdays search according to officials is the second within the last three weeks.
