A policeman who fled the Ocho Rios Police Station, and later shot one of several cops who chased him, was killed by his colleagues last night.
Up to late last night police had declined to release the dead policeman's name, but information reaching THE STAR is that he is stationed in the Corporate Area. The injured police who is from Ocho Rios was shot in the forearm, the police say.
THE STAR learnt that about 10:30 p.m., a boat ride was in progress in Ocho Rios, St Ann, when gunshots were reportedly fired at the event.
A team of policemen was said to have gone on the boat and a man who was a patron at the event was held and taken in for questioning. He reportedly did not identity himself as a policeman.
THE STAR further learnt that while being processed at the police station, the man tried to escape custody and ran from the station with a group of policemen hot on his heels.
Things took a turn for the worse, however, as the man reportedly began firing at the group of lawmen, one of whom was shot in the forearm.
The fire was returned and the fleeing man hit and subsequently succumbed to his injuries. It was later discovered that he was a policeman.
