Man accused of chopping dog returns to court

Hugh Tate, the man who had pleaded guilty to chopping up a dog at least 36 times, reappeared in court yesterday.

When he was brought before Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court, Tate seemed nervous as he listened keenly before sentence was decided upon.

Tate was eventually fined $15,000 or six months in prison.

Tate was last in court on July 30 when he pleaded guilty to the charge of cruelty to an animal.

On Tate's initial appearance in court, the complainant had told the court that the accused was known to her because she had rented a room from his sister. She also revealed that the dog in question belonged to her and was chopped by Tate at least 36 times, who then threw a stone in its head to ensure that he died.

The complainant also told the court that the dog bled from its ears after receiving the blow from the rock. The court also heard that this was the third dog that the complainant owned that was killed by Tate.
