Hospital officials have apologised after part of a new-born baby's finger was sliced off as a midwife used scissors to cut her umbilical cord.
Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital said it had apologised to the parents of Ishika Kainth, who had part of her left little finger sewn back on by surgeons.
New Cross's Director of Nursing and Midwifery, Cheryl Etches, said an independent investigation had been launched to learn lessons from the "tragic and regrettable" incident on May 14.
Ms Etches confirmed the Trust had apologised to the family.
She told the Press Association: "We take patient safety very seriously here and therefore we immediately commenced an investigation. It's clearly important we learn any lessons resulting from this incident."
The midwife involved in the incident is said by colleagues to be very upset and is not currently involved in clinical practice.
Ishika's mother Jasvir, 28, told the Wolverhampton Express and Star that she and her husband were hysterical after the fingertip was severed.
Mrs Kainth, of Fordhouses, Wolverhampton, said: "There was *lo** everywhere. It has caused my husband and I so much stress.
"You just do not expect these things to happen. Giving birth is supposed to be one of the most memorable experiences in your life."
