Some roads in Spanish Town, St. Catherine are now blocked as the unrest that originated in downtown Kingston spreads to other areas. RJR News has received reports that the police came under heavy fire in the vicinity of the Flat Bridge in St. Catherine as they move to keep the road clear of debris. It is understood that criminal elements have tried several times since Monday morning to block the main road leading to the bridge, but have been successfully repelled by the police. And one of the main corridors in Spanish Town-Brunswick Avenue has been blocked. The Spanish Town Police told RJR News earlier that its personnel who were attempting to clear the blockades came under heavy gunfire. Officers who went on an operation in Dempshire Pen on Sunday night were pinned down as they came under heavy and sustained gunfire and were unable to come out of the community until a support team came to withdraw them. Several officers narrowly escaped injury during that incident and the RJR News team was shown one section of a firearm that was punctured by a very powerful bullet. The policeman who was holding the weapon was not injured. Residents in an area called McCoy Land near Brunswick Avenue were attacked earlier Monday morning. Reports are that the two gates to the train line crossing were closed preventing traffic from flowing freely along Brunswick Avenue and gunmen fired wildly at the residents. The police responded at the situation was brought under control.
