Owen Ellington new Commissioner of Police

The Police Service Commission has confirmed the appointment of Owen Lloyd Ellington as the Commissioner of Police, with effect from April 5.

Ellington was chosen at the conclusion of a recruitment process to select a Commissioner of Police to replace Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin who resigned last November. Ellington, who had been acting as Commissioner since, is married and has five children.

A release issued by the Police Service Commission on Friday read as follows:

Police Service Commission is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Owen Lloyd Ellington, C.D., JP, as Commissioner of Police in the Jamaica Constabulary Force, with effect from the 5th April, 2010.

Mr Ellington, 47 years old, is a past student of the Glengoffe High School. He enlisted in the force on the 1st August, 1980, and was appointed to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (on contract/ gratuity terms) on the 5th April, 2006. He was appointed to act as a Deputy Commissioner of Police on the 11th August, 2008, and to further act as Commissioner of Police on the 7th November, 2009.

He is the holder of a Bachelor of Science in human resource management from the University of TechnologyJamaica and a Master of Science in national security and strategic studies from the University of the West Indies. Mr Ellington also earned professional certificates from numerous universities abroad, including a certificate in national security and strategy from the University of Beijing, China and a postgraduate certificate in transnational security, stability and democracy from the National Defence University Centre for Hemispheric Defence Studies in Washington DC, USA.
