68-y-o gets 2 years for fraud

A senior citizen who established a life of fraud dating back to the 1960s was duly rewarded with a two-year prison sentence in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Convicted of credit by fraud is 68-year-old Tyrone Bailey of Kitson Town, St Catherine. Before handing down sentencing, Resident Magistrate Marcia Dunbar-Green asked for the social-enquiry report done on the accused.

When it was read, a number of people began whispering in shock to learn that Bailey has dozens of convictions for fraud dating back from 1969. Bailey, who pleaded guilty to the offence on a previous court appearance, was subsequently given a custodial sentence.

Bailey's appearance arose from a February 11 incident where he tricked a woman out of US$1,000 under the guise that he has was a returning resident who needed to win her confidence.

The court learnt that the accused saw the complainant in Spanish Town. He stopped her, introduced himself and convinced her that he has lots of foreign currencies and is doing business. He told her she can only come on board if she withdrew the foreign currency. The complainant's naivety got the better of her.

The court further heard that after she gave the accused the money, he ran away in the company of another man. A report was made and an investigation led by Constable Machel Rosdom, resulted in Bailey's arrest and charge.
