A known obeah man in St Elizabeth recently had a number of persons in a church for a funeral, begging for mercy after he threatened to cast a spell on them.

THE WEEKEND STAR heard that the man, Mr Jacko*, was angry with his family after there was a disagreement as to where his mother was to be buried. She reportedly died in February after suffering from cancer.

After her death, family members who reside in the United States and United Kingdom, came to Jamaica for the funeral.

It is said that they agreed to bury the woman at a family plot.

The decision is said to have angered her only son, Mr Jacko, who then threatened that if his mother was not buried at his home, he would put a curse on everyone who attended the funeral.

The situation caught the ears of the police who say that although no formal report was made, the police had to speak with the family in an effort to maintain the peace.

"It caused a big fuss between the son and the rest of the family so we had to warn them ... He is a well known obeah man here ... ," Corporal Matthew Jackson of the St Elizabeth police told THE WEEKEND STAR.

It is said that on the day of the burial, however, Mr Jacko walked into the funeral proceeding armed with a list of names, a bible and a bottle of rum.

The daughter of the deceased woman, when contacted by THE WEEKEND STAR yesterday, said that Mr Jacko, after entering the church, immediately started chanting the names on the list and spoke in 'tongues' while smoking.

Fearing the possibility of being cursed, as promised, a number of persons including some relatives, left the church in a hurry while begging to be spared.

"All a who did a mek chat seh mommy ago bury a ... (the family plot) get scared and all run out a di church a bawl and a beg," she said.

She further said that it was then that they decided to change all plans and let Mr Jacko has his wish. The obeah man is said to have promised that as long as his mother was buried at his home then everybody would be alright. THE WEEKEND STAR tried to get a comment from Mr Jacko but when contacted he only said, "everything cool".
