George Kaufmann took his pet dog Sollie, a Golden Retriever, with him when he visited his jewellery shop in Maryland to meet a diamond dealer.
However, the three carat gem was accidentally knocked to the floor and was promptly eaten by the pup.
Mr. Kaufmann was advised by a vet to let nature run its course and wait for the precious stone to pass through.
He said: "When we took a walk in the morning and evening I collected and went through everything. It wasn't glamorous, but you gotta do what you gotta do."
Mr. Kaufmann eventually found the diamond, which he cleaned and returned to the dealer.
