CaribWorldNews, NEW YORK, NY, Tues. Mar. 16, 2010: Several members of the Jamaican Diaspora in New York are set to protest the sale of Air Jamaica this Thursday.
The group, led by Sons and Daughters of Jamaica founder, Jose Richards, plan to stage a demonstration outside the Jamaican Consulate in New York at 767 Third Avenue on March 18th from 5-7 p.m. The aim is to protest the sale of Air Jamaica, the island`s debt burdened carrier.
Air Jamaica officials have said the carrier should be officially sold on April 12th to Caribbean Airlines as the government moves to divest itself of many of its heavily indebted assets in order to secure an IMF loan.
But Richards and his group say the sale should be stopped and Prime Minister Bruce Golding should consider the proposal of the Jamaican Pilots Association.
Golding for his part has said recently that the Pilots Association does not seem to have strong financial backing in place to help cope with the carrier`s current debt and ensure it regains profitability.
