Cops hunt for fisherman(STAR NEWS)

The Portland police came up empty-handed in their search for a local fisherman, who visited Haiti less than two weeks ago and reportedly contracted malaria, but fled the parish since his return.

The name of the man is Sheldon Reid.

Police unsuccessfully stormed the Annotto Bay Hospital in St Mary yesterday, after receiving word that the suspect was admitted to the facility. The police said the suspect checked out before they arrived.

Reid, who police said was among a group of fishermen who visited Haiti following January's earthquake, is wanted in connection with the trafficking of marijuana to Haiti. The police said that the men were held up in Haiti for several days due to the heavy presence of Jamaica Defence Force coast guard patrolling the sea.

Police sources believe Reid, who hails from Norwich district in Portland, is a major player in the infamous drugs-for-guns-trade between Jamaica and Haiti.

Police sources said that Reid was among a group of fishermen, who visited Haiti following the devastating earthquake, which ravaged that country.

The police have theorised that the suspect is making every effort to elude them, and are warning unsuspecting residents to be on the lookout, as he is infected with malaria, which can be easily transmitted.

The other fisherman was picked up by the police last week.
