A massive earthquake rocked the eastern section of the impoverished nation of Haiti today, damaging a hospital in the capital city of Port-au-Prince. As a result of this quake, a tsunami watch has been issued for The Bahamas, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Reports are that the tremors were felt in Portland and the capital city of Kingston today. The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 and was centered about 14 miles west from the capital of Port-au-Prince, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
IF THE EARTHQUAKE OCCURRED IN THE SEA, THEN THERE WUD B A TSUNAMI. REASON BEING, THERE WUD EITHER BE A DRASTIC RISE OR DIP IN THE UNDERLYING SEAFLOOR. HENCE A DISPLACEMENT OF THE SEAWATER, GENERATING TOWERING WAVES. THIS CAN BE THE RESULT OF POWERFUL SUBMARINE VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS OR MOVEMENT ALONG PLATE MARGINS OR DISPLACEMENT OF HUGE ROCKS ALONG FAULT LINES WHICH TENDS TO CAUSE EARTHQUAKES IN THE CARIBBEAN. JAMAICA AND SOME COUNTRIES OF THE CARIBBEAN IS NOT LOCATED AT PLATE MARGINS, HENCE THIS REGION DONT GET THE MAJOR EARTHQUAKES AS OFTEN AS THOSE IN CHINA, JAPAN, INDONESIA, INDIA... EXCEPT COUNTRIES IN THE EASTERN CARIBBEAN LOCATED NEAR THE PLATE MARGIN TEND TO GET ALOT OF VOLCANOES. RESEARCH THE SAN ANDREAS FAULT IN THE US. THERE IS A PLATE MARGIN THERE, THAT HAS PLATES SLIDING IN OPOSITE DIRECTION, MANY YRS TO COME LOS ANGELES WILL B LOCATED AT A DIFFERENT LATITUDE
