1990, In Living Color breaks all the rules

Originally tagged the black Saturday Night Live, In Living Color premieres on FOX, becoming one of televisions most groundbreaking and controversial sketch comedies. The urban centric show, which ran from 1990 to 1994, is the brainchild of actor and comedian Keenan Ivory Wayans, who literally made the series a family affair (his brothers Damon, Marlon, Shawn and sister Kim were featured throughout). Along with such memorable characters as Fire Marshall Bill, the pro-black Homey The Clown, gay movie critics "Men on Film" and daring spoofs on everyone from Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan to talk show queen Oprah Winfrey, In Living Colors true legacy is the wealth of future superstar talent it would produce. Along with the Wayans themselves (who have become major players in Hollywood with a string of television shows and big screen comedies), the show launched the careers of Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx, box office comedy king Jim Carrey, Fly Girl choreographer turned Oscar nominee Rosie Perez, and Fly Girl turned superstar singer/actress/diva Jennifer Lopez. In Living Color would also prove to be an important showcase for live hip hop performances as varied as A Tribe Called Quest, Heavy D and Ice Cube. Even if you dont tune in to watch reruns on the FX networks, just remember, Dave Chappelle wasnt the first to do it.
