St Bess fire truck disabled

The parish of St Elizabeth is now without a fire unit, following a three-vehicle accident along the Luana to Middle Quarters road Tuesday.

According to head of the St Elizabeth Fire Department, Senior Deputy Superintendent Homer Morris, the Black River unit was involved in an accident with a Leyland truck and a Toyota RAV4 between Point and Baptist.

Morris said one firefighter received minor injuries as a result of the accident.

Mechanical problems

The crash occurred as the Black River unit headed to Middlesex, St Elizabeth, after assisting in extinguishing a fire at Long Hill in Whitehouse, Westmoreland.

With the fire truck down, Morris said efforts were being made to have the Junction unit, which has been out of service because of mechanical problems, up and running by the end of the week.

In the meantime, Morris said fire department officials would be seeking assistance from bauxite-mining firm, Alumina Partners of Jamaica.

Since the start of the year, the St Elizabeth fire department has responded to almost 500 fire calls. The majority of them have been bush fires.
