One man has been taken into custody in connection with the death of popular dancer, Ice, whose real name was David Alexander Smith.
The man, whose name has not yet been released, was taken into custody on Saturday, but is yet to be charged.
Ice was shot dead about 7:55 a.m. on Boxing Day, moments after he exited a bar along Newark Avenue, Kingston 11. He had gone there to purchase cigarettes. THE STAR had earlier reported that investigators believed that the dancer's car was hit as when they went to the scene, there were signs of an accident. Reports are that Ice went into the bar and was shot dead when he exited.
The suspect is said to be a labourer from Content Avenue, off Waltham Park Road.
Shooting incident
THE STAR was told that statements collected from witnesses implicated the suspect in the dancer's death. He was detained while reporting as a condition of bail in a shooting incident for which he has been charged.
Reports are that while the suspect was reporting to the Half-Way Tree Police Station, a complainant was making a report about a case of robbery with aggravation, where his jewellery and other items were stolen.
The complainant reportedly identified a watch being worn by the suspect as one that had been stolen from him and he was detained and interviewed. Based on the interview, investigators determined that he was the man they had been looking for.
He is to be further interviewed and will be charged soon.
Ice, a long-time member of the Black Roses Crew, created the popular 'Gully Creepa' dance. The dance brought attention to the dancer, especially after Jamaican speedster Usain Bolt performed the move after winning the 100-metre event at the 2008 Olympics in China in August.
