The messianic fervor underlying Obama's appeal, particularly to the younger generation, has clear roots in religious history. The appeal of evangelical or fundamental Christianity, while not accepted by all young people, nevertheless had a spill-over effect on many, instilling hope for a better and humane life for all. Older generations might see this as naive, but there is no doubt many younger voter saw Obama as a savior.
