European gay rights groups are reportedly pressuring and threatening the continuation of dancehall deejay, Capletons current European tour. One group, the Homosexuelle Arbeitsgruppen Basel (HABS) is reporting that a show that was scheduled for last Thursday in Basel, Switzerland, was canceled at the last minute by its organizers.
HABS and another activist group - Stop Murder Music (SMM) Bern - had opposed Capletons show because Capleton has performed songs encouraging violence against lesbian and gay people, in violation of his commitment to abide by the terms of the Reggae Compassionate Act (RCA), an agreement that he reported signed in early 2007 where he undertook to not perform murder music songs any more.
The activist groups were able to prove that Capleton performed songs that incite homphobic violence after he had signed the RCA. This reportedly occured during the Christmas Extravaganza show in Jamaica in late 2007.
HABS and SMM Berne are now demanding that Capleton publicly apologize and make a renewed statement in support of the rights of gay, bisexual and transsexual people.
