Police have arrested an employee of the Spanish Town Hospital, following the raping and buggery of a woman at the institution recently.

Omar Reid, 25, who is accused of raping and buggering the 25-year-old complainant inside a room near the hospital's laundry section, was granted $8,000 bail in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Dragged into room

The court heard that about 10 p.m. on September 28, the complainant visited a friend at the hospital. The court learnt that the friend left and Reid reportedly held on to the female, dragged her into a room and sexually assaulted her.

The matter was reported to the police and following investigations, Reid was taken into police custody and later arrested and charged with rape and buggery.

When the case came up before Resident Magistrate Lorna Errar, Reid pleaded not guilty. He explained to the court very eloquently, "Your Honour, I met this young lady sometime ago. We were negotiating sex for money. She asked where I worked and I told her the Spanish Town Hospital and I was shocked when she turned up on September 28."

He explained that he only had consensual sex with the female, who believed that he had obeah her into committing the act and at no time did he force her.

The RM asked the accused if the buggery was also consensual, he did not respond. However, she told attorney-at-law Earl Hamilton to represent the young man and the lawyer agreed. He is to return to court on December 8.
