Dakota Wilson was accidentally shot by his 14-year-old friend while the two were home alone
PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- A 10-year-old boy who was accidentally shot in the head just two months ago has recovered enough to return to his Palatka home. Detectives said Dakota Wilson's 14-year-old friend was playing with a gun when it went off, striking Dakota in the head. It was Father's Day and two boys had been home alone. The boy's doctors told his parents there was no hope as Dakota was lying on the operating bed after the shooting. However, the 10-year-old has continuously beaten the odds.
Although the 10-year-old lost control of most of the left side of his body, Dakota has made dramatic improvements. Just a few weeks after the shooting, he was well on his way to recovery, learning to sit up and stand on his own again. Two month later, he was able to return to the comforts of his home. Doctors told Dakota's family the child would not leave the hospital for six months and that he would have to rehab for at least another three months. Dakota surpassed all expectations and did it all in just eight weeks. "It's all a miracle," said the boy's father, Scott Wilson. Much like a lot of his short-term memory, Dakota can't remember riding in the ambulance after the accident or what happened afterward. However, he was able to recall how he was shot. "We went in my mom and dad's room, him getting the gun, walking out the bedroom door, and I snatched it out of his hand, set it on the freezer -- I didn't even feel the getting shot because it happened so quick," Dakota said. Although the energetic youngster is frustrating with being confined to a chair for most of the day, he said he knows he has received the best gift he could ever have. "A second chance for life," Dakota said. With the help of the Dreams Come True, Dakota and his family said they hope to go on a Disney cruise sometime next year.
