1½-Year-Old Boy Rescued From Sinking Truck

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- After Shenna Johnson said she blacked out while driving over the state Road 312 bridge approaching state Road 207 early Monday morning. The next thing she knew, her feet were in water, she had to escape her sinking pickup truck through the window, then help rescue her 18-month-old son strapped in the back seat.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Johnson, 23, was went off state Road 312 about 2:30 a.m., her pickup went airborne, clipped a tree and landed in a retention pond by the St. Augustine Record.
Mark Holmes and a second witness -- both employees of the St. Augustine Record -- ran over and helped Johnson get the young boy, Jayden, out of his car safety seat just as the pickup sank under water.

Johnson called the fact that she and her son escaped without injury "a miracle."
"I panicked and tried to get out," she told Channel 4's Dan Leveton. "All I could think of is getting the baby out."
"We saw her when she came up in the air and hit the water, and then we just drove up here," he said. "She was screaming, 'help me.' She got herself out of the car and helped us get the baby out. So the baby was under water for about 10 to 12 seconds and when we got him out, the baby was breathing."
St. Johns County Fire Rescue transported the Johnson and her son to Flagler Hospital, where they were treated and released.
Johnson said she suffered a few bruises, but is otherwise fine.
"I had a little angel, Guardian Angel," Johnson said. "He was watching over me, that's for sure."
