Dancehall deejay Assassin is one of the latest in a line of Jamaican artistes to collaborate with an International artiste. Assassin has collaborated with American superstar Usher for a remix of Love In This Club.
Assassin's manager and brother Gareth Campbell told The STAR how the collaboration happened. "The producer from Jive Records, Mikey B, reached out to us cause he wanted to hear a Jamaican artiste on Usher's new album and they chose Assassin. They contacted us, sent the track and asked us to add a few lines. We sent it back and they loved it."
According to Campbell, Usher's people said that they had always liked Assassin's records and thought it fitting to go alongside Usher.
The original song, Love In This Club, features Young Jeezy and is officially being used to kick off Usher's latest album titled Here I Stand, which is expected to be released this June. According to Campbell, they are unsure whether the remix will be featured on Usher's album, but the response to the song, which was released on Thursday, has been good.
Assassin adds a dancehall vibe to the mainly R&B song. He starts off the song and comes in at intervals deejaying. At one point, Assassin croons "Yuh be looking fine and yuh have on di likkle mini-skirt mi like, so yuh can just mek it ride up, pretend no one besides us," as he tells Usher in the song, "Talk to dem singer!"
This is not Assassin's first collaboration with an international artiste having appeared on Elephant Man's Bad Boy Records, released Get Physical album for the remix of Five O featuring Swizz Beats among other International acts. So far, Campbell says that the response to the Love In The Club remix has been good.
Other than releasing a number of smash hits such as Dem Nuh Waan No Gal, Assassin has a weekly dance in the works. Gareth Campbell told The STAR: "Assassin has joined forces with Weekenz to start a Tuesday night 'Girls Gone Wild' every Tuesday, starting on May 16th."
In the meantime, Assassin's manager claims that audiences can expect a new Assassin album by late this year or early 2009.
