NAME OF SONG: TRAILER LOAD A MONEY ARTISTE: VYBZ KARTEL DIRECTOR: WAYNE SOUTH/KARTEL RATINGS: FOUR STARS
Deejay Vybz Kartel loves a good skit and this is why this video kicks off with two men, meeting outside a studio, and after a brief conversation, we figure out that one of the men is called Bishop and they are going to link the Kartel for a dub plate. As they approach the studio, they appear on the studio's security cameras, then they enter the studio to find Kartel in a conversation with fellow deejay Avalanche. He gives the deejay a familiar gambit about not having any money etcetera and the deejay immediately 'styles' him back by replying: 'mi granny just dead, and mi have 20 yute, so yu need fi return like the jedi, time dread-I'.
The cameras cut away and the guys leave and return with a bag of cash which he hands to Kartel, who affects a movement to suggest that the bag is heavy under the weight of the stash. Then a big smile spreads across his face, he says 'yea man' and the beat kicks up. They are in business.
Portmore Empire top lieutenant Doza Medicine makes his acting debut in this video and he actually does a better job than Avalanche who seemed like he would benefit from a trip to the taxidermist's office. Doza is shown hustling the cash in the streets, and transporting that cash to an old grizzled lady, presumably his mother who relies on him to take care of her. One particularly moving scene is when she uses her wrinkled, weather beaten hands to count the cash and the sheer gratitude that appears to leap from her face once Doza arrives with the money.
This is one of Kartel's better songs in recent months and has an underlying message and the fork in the road metaphor to make a point about how the choices you make determine the quality and length of your life. Kartel's words seem almost semi-autobiographical.
Choose the one with the mansion, the yachts, few rolls Badness was the thing, but now mi have new goals
The video is dark in parts, but the bronze effect works and gives the video an avante-garde look and feel. Kartel gives a nod to Busy as he 'borrows' a phrase with the line: Mi waan fast cash, mek money like mi print it, print it, print it'.
Deejay Brammer makes a cameo in the video as Kartel deejays: Bramma, no matter which language yu speak/money ah the universal grammar.
This is a Wayne South directed video which shows the arc of development of the young director and shows that he will be in the game for a long time.
