uesday, 22 January 2008 A top level probe is in progress into the seizure of a large quantity of ganja worth more than a billion Jamaican dollars.
Eleven-thousand 300 pounds of the ganja was discovered by the police inside a truck at Gordon Cay near Kingston Harbour Monday afternoon.
The vehicle was parked inside a shipping container.
Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), in charge of Narcotics, Carlton Wilson, told the RJR News centre that the ganja was destined for export.
He disclosed that a man has been taken into custody in connection with the find.
Acting ACP Wilson said they believe that the container was going to be taken to another section of the wharf, where the drug would be used to contaminate a reefer container which was schedule to leave the country shortly.
Acting ACP Wilson said the police will be keeping an extra eye on the country's shipping ports as these facilities are being targeted by drug dealers.
He said due to the ease with which drugs get on the wharves, the police know that there is a big conspiracy to facilitate drugs leaving the country.
ACP Wilson said they will be stepping up their activities and their intelligence gathering capabilities in a bid to stop the export of drugs.
