LOW POINTS ... Shaun Wright-Phillips failed to hit the heights at Chelsea
The England winger is the latest player to be sold by the Blues at a big loss.
Since billionaire Roman Abramovich parked up at Stamford Bridge five years ago, they have offloaded a string of stars for a lot less than the price they paid for them.
Chief executive Peter Kenyon has previously claimed the club aims to become self-sustaining next season.
But on the evidence of their recent dealings in the transfer market, the Blues have a long way to go.
Ive picked the most shocking losses during the Abramovich era excusing Claude Makeleles exit on a free this summer given his age.
Let me know what you think of the list and Chelseas transfer policy.
No10: Khalid Bhoularouz
Jose Mourinho hailed Khalid the Cannibal after his £8m arrival after earning a reputation as a fearsome defender. But Bhoularouz failed to nail down a regular spot and was soon shipped out on loan to Seville. He completed a switch to Hamburg this summer for around half the fee he cost two years ago.
|
No9: Asier Del Horno
Another odd signing from Mourinho. Despite possessing Wayne Bridge in the pre-Ashley Cole days of 2005, the Blues paid £8m for left-back Del Horno. Yet, the Spaniard never settled at the Bridge and was flogged to Valencia at a loss of £3m just a year later.
|
No8: Scott Parker
Flush with Abramovichs cash at the start of 2005, Claudio Ranieri opted to splash out £10m on Parker. The midfielder emerged as a true star at Charlton but he was unable to leapfrog Frank Lampard and Claude Makelele into Chelseas team. After a frustrating 18 months, he left for Newcastle for £6.5m.
|
No7: Geremi
One of the first to join at the start of Abramovichs money-mad era. The midfielder may have arrived in a £7m deal from Real Madrid but he was never more than a bit-part player at the Blues. After four seasons of struggle at the Bridge, Geremi still only 28 at the time headed to Newcastle on a free.
|
No6: Damien Duff
Eyebrows were raised when Chelsea paid Blackburn £17m for Duff in 2003 but he initially looked good value on the opposite wing to Arjen Robben. Yet, injuries hampered the Irishmans development and, three years after his arrival, the Blues sent him to Newcastle who else? for just £5m.
|
No5: Shaun Wright-Phillips
Wright-Phillips was supposed to the answer to Chelseas search for a natural right winger even though there was shock at the £21m fee. Mourinho and later Avram Grant failed to find room for his talent and it was no surprise when Phil Scolari let him go. Even at a loss of £12m.
|
No4: Juan Veron
Even without the aid of hindsight, this was arguably Chelseas oddest buy. Veron was a huge failure at Manchester United but the Blues gave him a second chance with a £15m deal in 2003. To no-one's surprise, the midfielder again flopped and was eventually sneaked out on a free last year.
|
No3: Adrian Mutu
Chelsea splashed out £15.8m on Mutu in 2003 but he was sacked for taking cocaine a year later. The Blues effectively gave the striker away for free, with Juventus signing him after his seven-month suspension. However, the star has now been ordered to pay Chelsea over £13m in damages.
|
No2: Hernan Crespo
The Argentina ace carved out a reputation as one of the worlds deadliest strikers during his time in Italy. Crespos arrival for £16.8m in 2003 signalled Abramovichs intent. But the star failed to take England by storm and after a series of loans, he was released this summer for nothing.
|
No1: Andriy Shevchenko
This list has featured a string of huge losses but none of them come close to the Shevchenko saga. Signed for a British record £30m in 2006, the striker became arguably the biggest flop in the game's history. After two painful years, Sheva was gone for a tiny fraction of his whopping fee. Shocking business.

It was almost as if Cristiano Ronaldo had never been away as he marked his return to Manchester United's starting line-up with a goal as they beat Middlesbrough 3-1 in the Carling Cup third round.
Exactly 125 days after the final one of his 42 last season, Ronaldo converted his first of this one.
A Carling Cup tie with Middlesbrough may be somewhat less enthralling than a Champions League final at the Luzhniki Stadium but the headers were eerily similar, marking the end of a turbulent summer for Ronaldo and providing confirmation he intends to be a major player for United again this season - despite his stated desire to join Real Madrid.
Fergie slams Pogatetz
It was veteran Ryan Giggs who got United's deserved winner though, chipping home after Adam Johnson had blasted Boro level, before Nani struck a third in stoppage-time.
But there was a sour taste as well as Boro skipper Emanuel Pogatetz was dismissed for a tackle on Rodrigo Possebon which saw the 19-year-old Brazilian require lengthy treatment before eventually being carried from the field.
It was an awful end to an impressive evening for Possebon, the brightest of a gifted crop of youngsters for the Red Devils.
Given the events at Manchester City in the last couple of weeks, the emphasis on finding young talent has taken on even more significance for United, who are no longer the biggest spenders in the city, never mind the country.
Sir Alex Ferguson has traditionally tended to use the League Cup as a proving ground but all too often in recent years it has signalled the end of first-team dreams rather than the start.
However, 12 months on from a dreadful home loss to Coventry, this crop of Red Devils youngsters showed they were up to the task.
Injury ruled out Fabio Da Silva but brother Rafael and fellow Brazilian Rodrigo Possebon are stars of the future on this showing.
Indeed, Possebon was so impressive in the centre of midfield against opponents who so often cause United problems that Ferguson might have a job holding him back - assuming his injury is not serious.
And in Danny Welbeck the Old Trafford outfit have a local-born striker worthy of the praise he has been showered with on England Under-19 duty.
At 21 and 20 respectively, Nani and Anderson are not that much older but with significantly more experience, it was no surprise the pair took on more responsibility.
Nani appeared to be on a one-man mission to score, only to find Boro's own talented youngster, David Wheater, in top form, along with Brad Jones, who made a series of excellent saves.
Neither Wheater nor Jones could do anything about Ronaldo's header though, the prospective world footballer of the year racing away to celebrate what he hopes will be the end of the most turbulent period in his career.
Gareth Southgate lifted this trophy in 2004, the only time Boro have won a major trophy, but he must have been sadly disappointed with his side's first half showing.
Afonso Alves threatened early on and Stewart Downing got into some good positions but the Teessiders never threatened rookie keeper Ben Amos, propelled into Ferguson's side due to injury.
But if the England Youth international had allowed himself a slight smile of satisfaction during the interval, Amos received a rude awakening 12 minutes after the restart as Johnson lashed Boro level.
There appeared little danger as Nemanja Vidic nodded Downing's cross out of the area but Johnson caught his first-time volley perfectly, giving Amos little chance of keeping it out.
At that point, a well-contested game was in the balance but soon came the twist which saw Pogatetz sent from the field.
The Boro captain got to the ball just in front of Possebon as the pair went for it in fully committed fashion.
But Pogatetz's dangerous follow-through cut Possebon down, a nasty gash instantly appearing on the Brazilian's right leg as he yelled in agony.
It took the United medical staff five minutes to treat the Brazilian and substantially less for referee Andre Marriner to show Pogatetz the red card.
With a man advantage, United were given another advantage 11 minutes from time when O'Neil stood on the ball attempting to control Gibson's long pass, enabling Giggs to advance and calmly chip past Jones.
Nani wrapped up the win in stoppage-time, although Boro were a spent force by then.
Fergie slams Pogatetz Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson launched a scathing attack on Emanuel Pogatetz after the Middlesbrough captain's nasty challenge on Rodrigo Possebon, who was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg. Pogatetz was instantly red-carded by referee Andre Marriner for his second half tackle on Possebon, the 19-year-old Brazilian who had been impressive up to that point.''The injury looked really bad and the lad has gone to hospital,'' said the United boss.''The thing that gets me about challenges like that is that the opponent always claims he has done nothing wrong.''He (Pogatetz) should have just walked off the field. Then you get their bench screaming that is wasn't a sending-off and there is nothing wrong with our player.''At least Gareth Southgate was very good about it. He apologised and understood the gravity. It was an absolutely terrible tackle.''Southgate admitted Pogatetz had left Marriner little option than to dismiss him, although the Boro boss insisted his captain had worked hard to clean up a previously dismal disciplinary record.''We can have no complaints about the decision,'' admitted the former England star.''It is difficult to know why it happened. It was an unusual aberration for him because his discipline has improved in the last two years.''Southgate also confirmed he had tried to placate Ferguson, who had reacted so furiously to the comments from Boro's bench.''A couple of lads on our bench did not have the same view as I did but that is dealt with now,'' he said.''We can only hope the lad recovers.'' However, it was Ronaldo who grabbed the headlines with his first goal since an equally powerful header in the Champions League final against Chelsea in May. ''Cristiano has done that many times,'' said Ferguson, who also feels the furore involving Real Madrid has is now well and truly behind him.''I think Cristiano has come to accept that at this stage of his career, United is the place for him.''Southern Europeans want at some point to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona, so I understood what was going on in Cristiano's mind when he declared he wanted to join Real.''But once we had talked he accepted it was a move for the future.''I pointed out to him how much better it would be to leave like Eric Cantona, with the fans loving and appreciating him.''The crowd still chant Cantona's name and I told Cristiano 'Leave a hero like Eric' and one day he will. But not yet.''
Manager Arsene Wenger stuck to his policy of giving youth a chance in the much-maligned knock-out competition, naming a starting line-up with an average age of just 19 against Sheffield United, and he was not disappointed.
Mexican striker Carlos Vela scored a hat-trick, while Nicklas Bendtner - at 20 one of the senior men on display and with a wealth of first-team experience already - had put the young Gunners in command with two first half goals.
Vela chipped in a wonderful fourth five minutes after the restart, with Jack Wilshere, still only 16, adding a fifth before the 19-year-old South American completed his hat-trick as the Coca-Cola Championship side were outclassed.
Wenger proud of young guns
Sterner tests lie ahead for the likes of Wales Under-21 midfielder Aaron Ramsey, the raw talent of Wilshere and aspiring full-back Kieran Gibbs - but on this evidence their Wembley dream may not be so far away.
The young Gunners began brightly and a crisp passing move sent Gibbs away down the left, only for his low centre to fly across the six-yard box.
United forward Danny Webber did well to weave himself into space just outside the Arsenal penalty area but then could not get any power on his shot and the ball bobbled through to Lukasz Fabianski, captain for the night and at 23 the oldest man in the home team.
Another quick passing Arsenal move on the edge of the area saw Bendtner play in Johan Djourou and the big defender turned to fire a goalbound effort which Paddy Kelly saved at full stretch.
Bendtner flicked on for Wilshere to collect in the overlap down the right but the teenager rushed his attempted curled shot and hit wide.
The Dane then showed the rest of the youngsters how it should be done with a fine finish after 31 minutes.
Vela held off Blades captain Chris Morgan before feeding the ball square to Bendtner just outside the penalty area.
The 20-year-old took a couple of touches before dispatching a low strike into the bottom right corner for his third goal of the season.
Arsenal felt they had a strong penalty claim when Morgan slid through on Wilshere but referee Phil Dowd was unimpressed.
After 42 minutes Ramsey - signed from Cardiff for £5million in the summer - weaved his way into the left of the penalty area before turning and playing a superb backheel to Bendtner who beat Kenny from six yards.
Before the visitors could regroup and look towards the respite of half-time they were further behind.
Bendtner turned provider as he chipped a pass through for Vela to run on to down the right.
The Mexican sprinted into the area before bending a delightful effort into the far corner.
In the second half Arsenal continued where they had left off as Gibbs stung the keeper's hands with a fierce angled drive from the left of the penalty area.
The full-back then sent a long pass upfield towards Vela who took the ball on his chest, leaving Morgan chasing shadows, and darted into the box to finish with an audacious chip over the stranded keeper.
It got worse for the battered Blades when Wilshere drilled in a fifth after 57 minutes.
Fran Merida's right-wing corner picked out the 16-year-old - Arsenal's youngest to appear in the Premier League - and he showed great composure to drill a low shot past Kelly from 22 yards.
However, Cesc Fabregas, by just more than a month, remains Arsenal's youngest scorer at 16 years 212 days with his goal against Wolves in December 2003.
There was no holding back by the rampant Gunners with Djourou heading over at the back post following another deep corner before Bendtner narrowly missed out on his hat-trick when his close-range shot trickled wide.
Vela then completed his treble with another well-taken effort after 88 minutes after running clear down the left onto Ramsey's pass.
Wenger proud of young guns Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hailed a ''complete display'' by his young Gunners after they demolished Sheffield United 6-0 in the Carling Cup. He said: ''The team showed a good mixture of talent and a mature collective spirit to play football the way we want to play. ''The way the team remained focused and they looked a complete team. I am very proud of that.''We looked strong in every individual position, and that takes a lot of hard work.''Wenger added: ''We knew about Bendtner, but we discovered more about Vela. He is a clinical finisher.''I integrated Wilshere into the first team sometimes last season when he was 15 and he did not look out of place and it is natural for him.''I was not surprised because I see them every day, but you never know on a big stage how they play.''They did that with the belief we want them to have and the spirit we want then to have.''Now for us the biggest challenge is to keep them together and slowly integrate them into the first team. Some have done that already.''When you are under immense pressure to buy in every transfer window, when you know that you have these players behind it would be killing the work we have done.''Wenger maintained there was no reason why the young Gunners could not go all the way to Wembley, having reached the final in 2007 and lost in the semis last season.''We want to win the trophy this season, whether Tottenham or anybody else comes along in the later rounds,'' he said.''We can go all the way and win it. Why not?''The only pressure you have is that when you go through the rounds towards the semi-finals, everybody says 'now you have to change all these players'.''So what do you do? Let them play like they have tonight and then say, 'sorry, you do not play anymore'? For me, that is not serious.''No matter how far we go, we have to stick to our policy. These players do not play like kids. They play with intelligence, talent and with spirit. They can beat many teams and I would not be scared to play any individual in the Premier League.'' The Gunners boss maintained he was proud of the way his men had responded this season, and hit back following a leaked confidential document from a recent team-briefing. ''We have nothing to hide. We are very proud of the qualities which were on that sheet,'' the French coach maintained.''This meeting was done by me and only by me. It is a shame that you cannot trust anybody any more in the hotel, but on the other hand we have nothing to hide.''Basically what came out of this meeting, which we have done many times, was that we want to be humble to play for each other.''What I regret is when you leave a sheet of paper with 'confidential' written on it in a five-star hotel is that you find it in the newspapers the next day.''That means you cannot trust anybody in the hotels, and you pay a lot of money [to go there].''You cannot accept this type of behaviour because if you leave £20 in a room, you do not find it again as well - it is the same.''Blades boss Kevin Blackwell admitted his side had little answer to the young Gunners.''We knew they were a good set of lads, but nobody knew how good they were,'' he said.''They were awesome at times and would have beaten most teams. A lot of people would like to know how Arsene can do it.''He has gone around the world to pick out the best - but there are also four or five top-class English kids in there so that can only bode well for the future of the national team.''The day had started so full of hope for the Blades, following the news an independent arbitration had ruled in the club's favour over the Carlos Tevez affair, which could eventually lead to some £30million in compensation.Blackwell said: ''Life has a funn
Spearmon eyeing MVP
published: Wednesday | September 24, 2008
AMERICAN WORLD Championships 200m silver medallist Wallace Spearmon could switch his training base to Jamaica for the upcoming season.
Spearmon, who won silver and bronze at the 2005 and 2007 World Championships respectively, is thinking about joining the high-profile MVP Track Club under the guidance of head coach Stephen Francis.
Ray Flynn, Spearmon's manager, speaking to The Gleaner from the United States, said he "cannot confirm" his client would join the group, but said it was an option.
"I think he is looking at different options, but I don't think he has made up his mind yet," explained Flynn, who further added, "Jamaica is one of the options". MVP Track Club athletes had tremendous success at the recent Beijing Olympics winning two gold and three silver individual medals. Shelly-Ann Fraser, who became the first Jamaican woman to win an Olympic 100m title and Melaine Walker, the 400m hurdles winner, topped the list while Shericka Williams (400m), Sherone Simpson (100m) and Great Britain's Germaine Mason (high jump) won silver medals.
Confirmation
MVP's top male sprinter, Asafa Powell, the world's second fastest man, anchored Jamaica's 4x100m, which included two other of his clubmates - Michael Frater and Nester Carter, to a world record 37.10 seconds. Williams was also a part of Jamaica's 4x400m, which pocketed bronze.
Bruce James, president of MVP, confirmed that Spearmon had indicated an interest in joining the UTech-based club.
A number of athletes have contacted the group ... he (Spearmon) is one of the persons, but nothing has been confirmed on his side or ours," James told The Gleaner.
Jermaine Pennant was a constant menace on the right flank while Lucas and Daniel Agger produced assured performances to give the Spaniard a selection poser for the game against Everton.
Agger gave Liverpool a 15th-minute lead from a free-kick before Michael O'Connor's equaliser 10 minutes later.
Pennant supplied Liverpool's second goal with a dangerous cross which was headed home by Lucas in the 58th minute but really the margin of the victory should have been greater.
While strengthening the Reds first team for a Barclays Premier League title challenge has been Benitez's priority he is attempting to build a squad to challenge on several fronts.
Rafa satisfied with result
The manager included only one English player - Pennant - in his starting line-up as he handed debuts to Brazilian goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri and Swiss defender Philipp Degen.
Sami Hyypia, named as captain, and Agger were recalled in central defence while there were places for Lucas, Emiliano Insua and Damien Plessis while Nabil El Zhar, Ryan Babel and David Ngog carried the attacking threat.
Crewe first-team coach Steve Holland included former Liverpool youth team defender Danny O'Donnell alongside captain Julien Baudet at the back.
Degen and Pennant linked up well down the right flank in the eighth minute to create Liverpool's first chance.
Breaking from a Crewe free-kick, Pennant slipped a clever ball to Degen on the overlap and he whipped a low cross into the penalty area but neither Ngog nor Babel were able to get a touch.
Pennant continued to provide the home side's best outlet and Crewe defender Billy Jones was lucky to escape a booking after a late challenge on the winger in the 12th minute.
Liverpool's pressure eventually paid off three minutes later after Ngog was fouled on the edge of the penalty area by O'Connor.
Denmark defender Agger took the resulting free-kick and smashed a powerful low effort past goalkeeper Steve Collis.
Crewe equalised in the 25th minute after Byron Moore's shot was deflected by Agger for a corner.
Jones crossed and Calvin Zola's header was parried by Cavalieri but O'Connor made amends for his earlier foul when he slammed home from close range.
The Railwaymen began to settle but it was Liverpool who created the next opportunity in the 41st minute.
Hyypia was picked out on the penalty spot by a Pennant corner but Collis blocked his shot and Plessis could only fire the loose ball into the crowd.
Babel went close moments after the interval when his shot from the left edge of the penalty area was deflected and wrong-footed Collis but looped on to the roof of the net.
Liverpool restored their lead in the 58th minute after good work down the right flank by the impressive Pennant.
The lively winger delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area and Brazil midfielder Lucas timed his run superbly to direct a header past Collis.
Benitez surprisingly introduced Fernando Torres and the Spain international was immediately involved.
Pennant delivered another ball into the penalty area in the 82nd minute and Torres' header was tipped past the post by Collis.
The Crewe goalkeeper saved again from the Spaniard two minutes later after Torres had broke clear of the Crewe defence.
Liverpool were given a few late scares as Crewe pressed for an equaliser but held on to secure their place in the next round

Five schools hoping to maintain perfect record in daCosta Cup |
PAUL A REID, Observer Writer reidp@jamaicaobserver.com Monday, September 22, 2008 |
LACOVIA, St Elizabeth - Five schools will be seeking to maintain their perfect win records in the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition when the competition continues this afternoon.
Former champions Rusea's High and St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS); upstarts Anchovy High and Denbigh High, as well as Marcus Garvey High have won all their games played so far, while Maggotty High will go for a third straight win after losing their first game.
The Andrew Edwards-coached STETHS are expected to be tested for the first time this season when they take on Lacovia High in a Zone E game in Lacovia.
STETHS have so far breezed through their first two games, scoring 14 unanswered goals, including nine in Saturday's romp over BB Coke in Santa Cruz, but are lying in third place on six points, a point behind joint leaders Lacovia and Munro College.
Despite being less than 10 minutes apart, Lacovia have languished in the long shadow cast by the two-time champions and their 3-1 win in the return leg last season was their only win in the last eight meetings between both teams.
Lacovia are off to a fast start, piling up seven points from their first three games and held Munro College to a 0-0 draw at Munro on Saturday.
They will hope that playing at home will give them the edge over the high-scoring STETHS, who will be led by Deshorn Brown, the scorer of eight goals so far.
Maggotty, who won two games after losing their first of the season to STETHS, will host Munro, who they have beaten just once in the 2004 season, but have scored against just once in their last four games, while conceding 19 goals over the same period.
Rusea's High and Anchovy are on course for a clash between unbeaten teams on Wednesday if they can win today against Knockalva and Merlene Ottey, respectively.
Marcus Garvey have surged to the top of Zone D with back-to-back wins, but will face second-placed Brown's Town at Addison Park and will be gunning to make amends for a 1-6 thrashing in the second game between both teams last season.
Denbigh High have won both games in Zone H so far and are joint leaders with Lennon, but will be seeking their first win overt former champions Clarendon College in three years.
Clarendon College were beaten 0-1 by Lennon in their opening game on Saturday and must start winning if they are to keep in touch with the leaders.
Games on today
Zone B - Knockalva vs Rusea's, Anchovy vs Merlene Ottey, Frome vs Green Island
Zone D - Ocho Rios vs Cedric Titus, Browns Town vs Marcus Garvey
Zone E - Lacovia vs STETHS, BB Coke vs Balaclava, Maggotty vs Munro
Zone H - Clarendon vs Denbigh, Thompson Town vs Claude McKay
All games will start at 3:30 pm.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has spoken of his shock at an outburst from Michel Platini.
AdamDavy/Empics
The Gunners' boss has hit back at Platini
The tirade emerged after Platini was probed about the possible introduction of video technology, which the UEFA chief is against. Wenger was brought into the conversation and he went on to make further remarks suggesting his dislike of a small number of clubs dominating football in Europe.
"I am stunned by the aggressive content of Platini's words,'' he told L'Equipe. "I am a supporter of good management of clubs, for financial equilibrium. And UEFA must equally support this idea. I am fighting for the future of the game and of football.
"I don't see why UEFA should take umbrage at ideas that are different from theirs.'
"I am effectively a supporter of video assistance for referees, like all coaches, and I believe UEFA have an important role to play in this.
"I am for sporting justice and UEFA must be the guarantor of it.''
In Platini's interview with Dauphine Libere, Wenger's name was raised during a question about the introduction of video technology.
"I am talking about football, he is talking about business. Please stop with Wenger and the others. All that interests Arsene is looking after number one," Platini said.
Asked if video replays will one day be available to referees, the head of European soccer's governing body added: "I'm looking forward to Arsene Wenger never seeing that happen".
Former France playmaker Platini also said he was delighted with Romanian side CFR Cluj's shock 2-1 Champions League win at AS Roma on their debut in the competition last week.
"That is what makes football beautiful. That is what people like Wenger do not want to see, minor teams beating major ones, because they only want their business."
Mike Phelan believes tonight's Carling Cup tie with Middlesbrough offers Cristiano Ronaldo the perfect opportunity to ease his way back into Manchester United's starting line-up.
Ronaldo has been named in a 20-man squad for the Old Trafford encounter as United look to atone for their embarra**ing first hurdle exit in the competition last term.
While the Portugal winger has come on as substitute against Villarreal and, 48 hours ago, in the battling draw at Chelsea, Sir Alex Ferguson knows Ronaldo cannot reach the level he needs to be an effective force in the Premier League without further match sharpness.
So Middlesbrough, who have had plenty of run-ins with the 23-year-old before, are inadvertently cast in the role of experimental guinea pigs.
"Cristiano is maybe a couple of weeks behind everybody else but his progression has been fantastic,'' said Phelan, who was confirmed as Ferguson's full-time assistant a fortnight ago.
"The work he has put into his recovery and training has been first class and he has been introduced into games for 15 or 20 minutes at a time.
"He knows he still needs a few more minutes to get to the level he wants to be at. Tonight is a great opportunity to do that, which is why his name is in the squad.''
Ferguson will have a few more genuine first-teamers than usual in his side, with Anderson and Nani also needing games. England duo Gary Neville and Owen Hargreaves might be involved as well, although there is confusion over the availability of striker Manucho, who was due to make his debut.
In his programme notes, which were written last week, Sir Alex Ferguson suggested the Angolan would miss out due to a foot injury.
However, Ferguson's assistant Mike Phelan yesterday claimed Manucho would be in a 20-man squad for the cup tie.
There will also be the usual scattering of youngsters, although young Brazilian Fabio Da Silva misses out, having been forced to undergo a shoulder operation.
England Under-19 international Danny Welbeck is also expected to be handed at least a place on the bench, with Phelan admitting the younger members of Ferguson's squad must not spurn their chance.
"Looking back 12 months to the defeat against Coventry, we were disappointed with that and we do not want to go out so early again,'' he said.
"This is a rare opportunity and in some cases it is a great opportunity. It can launch your career.
"Some of these younger players have been here a while and some might not even have played at Old Trafford. That in itself is an experience.''
Ferguson must try and strike the right balance between offering the experienced players in his squad some valuable time on the pitch, whilst ensuring as many youngsters as possible gain experience of life on the big stage.
"We have a squad of 20 players and the young ones in it are now hoping to be in the starting line-up,'' observed Phelan.
"I am sure the ones who get into the team will perform. It is what they have worked so hard to get to. They need to produce because this is a critical point of their careers.
Sheffield United have announced that a Football Association arbitration panel has ruled in the club's favour over a compensation claim relating to the Carlos Tevez affair.
AlexLivesey/GettyImages
Carlos Tevez scores the goal at Old Trafford which secured West Ham's safety
The FA failed to dock the Hammers any points despite a wide ranging series of rule breaches surrounding the purchase of Tevez and Javier Mascherano in August 2006 with the club failing to properly disclose the link between the players and Media Sports Investments (MSI). Premier League rules state that players cannot be owned by a third party.
The East London side were fined just £5.5million by the FA as an independent panel made the judgement just weeks before the end of the 2006/07 campaign.
Tevez was instrumental in West Ham superb late season form which saw them transformed from relegation certainties to surviving on the final day as the Argentinian scored the only goal of the game at, coincidentally, Manchester United.
The Blades initially tried to get their relegation overturned but after being unsuccessful in that attempt turn their attention to compensation for the loss of income relegation from the Premier League brings.
The club today issued a statement on their official website, www.sufc.co.uk, claiming success in that case, although the exact nature of the compensation is as yet unclear.
Newspaper reports suggest the Blades could be looking for a figure of around £30million, while chairman Kevin McCabe is on record as saying that relegation cost United at least £50million in lost revenues.
Chairman Kevin McCabe McCabe said this morning: "I can confirm that both clubs have been notified of the ruling. The arbitration panel has awarded in our favour.
"The matter is still legally in process so I do not wish to comment any further until we have completed that process.''
Intriguingly, the club statement also raises the question of a further intervention by the Premier League.
It read: "The Blades began their legal fight for reinstatement some 16 months which also included an arbitration hearing against the Premier League. This award could now pose a question as to what the Premier League will do.''
A West Ham spokesperson told BBC Radio 4: "We need to digest the full findings of the arbitration panel and will consult our lawyers on the next steps we might take before making any further comment.''
For their part, West Ham are now considering whether or not to appeal against this latest ruling through the Court of Arbitration for Sport, although that decision may hinge on the level of compensation that is fixed when the arbitration panel meets again to determine a figure.
Like Sheffield United, West Ham signalled their intent to withdraw from the debate while they consult legal representatives, adding: "It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.''
Former United manager Neil Warnock welcomed the verdict as "a matter for justice''.
But Crystal Palace boss Warnock, who later left Bramall Lane after the club were relegated as the Argentina striker fired the Hammers to safety, believes the money is a poor substitute for the future his side could have enjoyed in the Premier League.
"It's a matter for justice and I think everyone in the country knows this is the right verdict,'' he told Sky Sports News. "They have only claimed for one season (in lost revenues) and what they would have missed out on on the field and off the field.
"That's what it comes to in today's game. It's not an awful lot at the top level...it's one good player.
"This justifies what Kevin McCabe has said all along: that we were hard done by, that it wasn't done legally and we were fighting for our rights.
"It's the principle of the whole thing. We were appalled by the original verdict.''
Reflecting on the effect relegation to the Coca-Cola Championship had on the Blades, he added: "It was scandalous. It changed one or two lives and it shouldn't have happened. This verdict puts your faith back into the justice system.''
"The club itself is geared up for the top level and it knocked us back no end. I think we would be doing very well (in the Premier League). It (relegation) is on my CV, which it shouldn't be.''
Announcing the arbitration panel's findings, McCabe this morning said: "I can confirm that both clubs have been notified of the ruling.
"The arbitration panel has awarded in our favour. The matter is still legally in process so I do not wish to comment any further until we have completed that process.''
olo Toure has hit out at Kevin Davies for his tackle on Arsenal defender Gael Clichy at the weekend.
Empics
Clichy lies on the floor after the tackle.
Arsenal's medical team initially feared the Frenchman's leg had been fractured, but X-rays later confirmed he suffered heavy bruising to his left shin.
Davies was booked for the challenge, and defended by Bolton manager Gary Megson. But Toure claimed Davies was trying to intimidate Arsenal.
''The tackle was a disgrace - very bad,'' said Toure. ''There is no place for that in football.
''I have nothing against Kevin Davies, he seems a good guy. But he uses his elbows far too much.
''It is wrong to allow those sorts of challenges in football. If we are going to allow that, you might just as well get in kids off the street because they can make those challenges just the same as anybody else can.''
''Football is supposed to be a game of skill. I am sure we could go out and kick players just as hard as we are kicked but we'd rather concentrate on playing football,'' continued Toure.
''It happened just before half-time and in the break we knew we had to make sure we did not allow ourselves to become intimidated.
''In the past we have allowed ourselves to be intimidated but this time we knew that it would be tough at Bolton and we were ready for that.
''We know that we have to win our matches away from home this season if we are going to be champions because we dropped far too many points away from home last season.
''In previous years we have been too easy to beat away but we have shown this week that we are able to win these games and with the draw in Ukraine in between them, overall it is a good week.''
Bolton midfielder Kevin Nolan added: ''The ref said to me Kevin followed through and he got booked for that but, obviously, people see it in different ways.
''I have seen Arsenal players make tackles like that - it is not just about us.''
The visitors had led for much of the contest following Park Ji-sung's first-half tap-in.
But 10 minutes from time, after Nicolas Anelka, Didier Drogba, Joe Cole and Michael Ballack had tried and failed to break down United's stubborn defence, Kalou exposed United's poor offside trap by nodding home John Mikel Obi's free-kick 10 minutes from time.
Not for the first time in his illustrious career, Ferguson's team selection caused an outbreak of head scratching among United's army of fans.
Yet his choice of Park and Darren Fletcher worked a dream, especially with the Scot switching to the middle of midfield, a move that saw Owen Hargreaves take up a right-wing station.
Identifying Chelsea's full-backs Jose Bosingwa and Ashley Cole as major attacking threats, Ferguson chose to put his two most energetic men in direct opposition, keeping the home pair occupied defensively and stifling their threat in attack.
Despite their poor recent form, the Red Devils showed their attacking intent from the start, when Fletcher turned Hargreaves' low cross wide, and Chelsea, having lost Deco just before kick-off after the Portugal star was injured in the warm-up, could not get into their stride even though they could call upon Michael Ballack as replacement.
Luiz Felipe Scolari's team was further disrupted when Ricardo Carvalho hobbled off after just 12 minutes, so there was always a nagging fear Joe Cole's failure to find the net when he robbed Patrice Evra to give himself a clear sight of goal was going to prove costly.
Chelsea, already given one let off when Petr Cech's wayward clearance gave first Dimitar Berbatov, then Wayne Rooney the chance to launch speculative efforts at the home goal, survived again when Rooney set up Ferdinand, only for the home keeper to save with his legs.
But on their next attack, United finally prospered as Patrice Evra galloped past Bosingwa to reach Rooney's inspired through ball.
Evra's pinpoint cross found Berbatov and while Cech was once again equal to the shot, Park had the easiest of tasks to bundle home the rebound.
After spending nearly half an hour on the back foot, Chelsea finally got into their stride.
Gary Neville's back header spread panic in the visitors defence and when Edwin van der Sar came off worst in a collision with Florent Malouda, who might easily have scored, the veteran Dutchman was eventually forced from the field.
Chelsea's improved performance also brought out the spikier side in Paul Scholes, who was booked, although, with Nicolas Anelka also firing over on a couple of occasions, it was not until the arrival of Didier Drogba - following a brief delay due to an offending bracelet - that the home side really upped the ante.
Joe Cole should have done more with Anelka's low cross than prod it straight at Evra, then Jonny Evans - preferred to Wes Brown in central defence - got in the way of Bosingwa's shot.
Ferguson's response was to bring on Cristiano Ronaldo, who put the Chelsea defence on red alert with his direct running but also shamed himself with a blatant dive as Frank Lampard made a tackle.
In ignoring Anelka's pleas for a pass as Michael Ballack split United's defence wide open, Joe Cole needed to do better than blast his shot straight at Kuszczak, who was quickly becoming one of the visitors key men.
There would have been nothing the Pole could do to keep out Anelka's effort 18 minutes from time though as, from four yards out and with the goal at his mercy, the Frenchman inexplicably failed to make contact with Bosingwa's cross, the ball bouncing to safety off the Frenchman's standing leg.
But just as a wobbling Chelsea had eventually tumbled in the first-half, so United did the same 10 minutes from time.
In chopping down Ashley Cole, Rooney not only picked up his side's fifth booking. He also provided John Mikel Obi with the opportunity to float over a free-kick to the edge of the United six-yard box where the visitors, getting their marking and offside trap hopelessly wrong, left Kalou on his own to nod home the equaliser.
The game ended in bad tempered fashion as United, who had seven players booked, complained bitterly at referee Mike Riley for his handling of the game as Drogba was receiving treatment after being clattered by Ferdinand.
Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari is set to sign Mineiro for midfield cover in a move that has added significance following an injury to Deco in the warm-up of the clash against Manchester United.

Scolari acknowledged Deco's absence playing a role in a poor start against United at Stamford Bridge, with Salomon Kalou required to level 10 minutes from full-time to extend Chelsea's unbeaten home record in Premier League matches to 85.
Deco was thought to have picked up a thigh injury before the draw, then Ricardo Carvalho also damaged his knee during the game - and both will be assessed to determine the extent of the damage.
Mineiro is expected to be announced as a Chelsea player within 24 hours after agreeing terms to sign as a free agent following a spell with Hertha Berlin. Scolari made a move for the Brazil midfielder as he also has Michael Essien sidelined.
"Mineiro is a player I need because I lost Essien for six months and only John Mikel Obi is there for us,'' said Scolari. "He won't play this week but maybe after 10 days he will play.
"He needs to play in the reserve team and needs some time but that is good for me because he gives me some options.
"We would miss Deco, it would not be good news. But it's hard to say at the moment (how bad the injury is).''
With Khaldoon Al Mubarak in attendance, City - inspired by their superstar Brazilian Robinho - ripped Portsmouth apart with a six-goal spectacular.
Jo, Richard Dunne, Robinho and Shaun Wright-Phillips - plus substitutes Ched Evans and Gelson Fernandes - each scored in a stunning all-round display.
Hughes delighted with super show
It was humiliation for Portsmouth, and in particular a match to forget for goalkeeper David James - who was partly culpable for several of the home side's goals.
Mark Hughes, the City manager, has been promised time to break into the top four by the club's new owners from Abu Dhabi. But after this, expectations will be sky-high.
Pompey boss Harry Redknapp started off with an unfashionable 3-5-2 line-up and must have regretted it as City pulled the defence apart from the start.
James had already made two good saves, from Robinho and Wright-Phillips, when City went ahead in the 13th minute.
Jo, a handful for the centre-backs all afternoon, was the man to get it - as Al Mubarak applauded from the directors' box.
Robinho slid a pass that caught Younes Kaboul flat-footed to find his fellow Brazilian. As James came racing out, Jo rounded him easily and side-footed the ball into the empty net.
Peter Crouch glanced a header over the bar from a corner as Portsmouth tried to hit back quickly, but almost immediately were 2-0 down.
James had to shoulder some of the blame for this one. Elano's clever corner towards the near post nearly caught him out, and he could only parry the ball for Dunne to bundle home from close range.
Portsmouth then had a spell where they managed to match City and create several chances, but wasted their opportunities to claw their way back.
Crouch came within inches, slamming Glen Johnson's low centre just the wrong side of the post; then Kaboul spooned a shot over from 12 yards, after Sol Campbell had headed down Nadir Belhadj's free-kick.
Campbell saw his goal-bound header blocked on the line by Pablo Zabaleta, before Lassana Diarra's shot was diverted over his own bar by Dunne.
But Robinho could scent his second goal in as many games and the 24-year-old nearly scored with some outrageous skill, only to be denied by a block.
Within seconds of the re-start, Jermain Defoe burst through on goal ahead of Micah Richards but finished woefully - poking his shot wide ... and that was that for Portsmouth.
City's third goal arrived in the 57th minute - and to general delight in the stadium, the scorer was that man Robinho. It was made by the irrepressible Stephen Ireland, who robbed Armand Traore and floated a ball over the top for Jo to knock into his compatriot's path - and Robinho finished expertly with a low strike into the corner.
The fourth was if anything even more popular with the City fans, as Wright-Phillips made it on to the scoresheet. Ireland was the provider again, delivering a perfect pass for Wright-Phillips to run on to and hammer a shot from a narrow angle past James at his near post.
Evans made it five after Robinho's step-overs flummoxed Campbell; Wright-Phillips executed a Brazilian-style back-heel, and the 19-year-old Welshman completed the job neatly from eight yards out.
Portsmouth were so shell-shocked it was no surprise when the sixth arrived. Robinho's cross from the left was dangerous; James just managed to stop Wright-Phillips from getting to it, but Fernandes followed up to slam the loose ball home.
Robinho was given a thunderous standing ovation when he was substituted with a few minutes remaining, before Evans crashed a volley a couple of yards too high.
Only the final whistle brought relief for Portsmouth.
Hughes delighted with super showMark Hughes saluted his six-shooters after Manchester City crushed Portsmouth to signal the start of the new era at Eastlands. He said: "It was the best performance by one of my teams by a country mile. If you had to pick any day to impress people today was the day to do it."From start to finish our drive and determination and our ability to pick the right pass and create chances was evident for all to see. It was a fantastic day for us."Portsmouth are a good side but today they were not allowed to play their game.''Jo, Richard Dunne, Robinho and Shaun Wright-Phillips plus substitutes Ched Evans and Gelson Fernandes each scored in a stunning all-round display.Hughes picked out Robinho, Stephen Ireland, Wright-Phillips and Vincent Kompany as the star performers. He added: "There were outstanding personal performances within a great team performance."Stephen Ireland again was exceptional and has been for many weeks, and we hope we can sustain him."Robinho will grab headlines and rightly so and there were good performances by Vincent and Shaun and a clean sheet as well."In the end I was taking people off to allow them a standing ovation - and that's the only reason I made the substitutions to be perfectly honest.''Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp was shell-shocked and admitted his defence and goalkeeper David James had an awful game.Redknapp said: "I'm bitterly disappointed - I didn't see that coming as we were a team on form on the back of three fantastic wins ."We gave away two terrible goals in the first half, but towards the end of the first half we had some chances and thought we could get back into this game."Jermain Defoe had a chance just after the break and then they played a pass and there were two of them running through on our goal. Our defensive play today was abysmal.''Redknapp said he was not envious about Hughes spending power, and insisted his defence had played out of character. He added: "It was a chapter of errors and they did not have much to say for themselves afterwards."Tomorrow we will have a meeting and look at all the goals and where we went wrong.'Sunday, September 21, 2008 | Expand +

Chelsea had Terrys dismissal for fouling Manchester Citys Jo overturned by the FA.
The England centre-half will now NOT serve a three-match suspension and is free to face title rivals Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
United boss Fergie fumed: I understand Hackett told ref Mark Halsey to rescind the card and he wouldnt. So now he Is refereeing in League Two this weekend.
I do not understand how this has happened. If it had been a Manchester United player, Hackett would not have done this.
This is going to have to happen all the time if a referee is considered to have made a mistake.
An independent FA panel which did not include Hackett upheld Chelseas claim of wrongful dismissal.
Ref Halsey had no hesitation in sending off Terry for hauling down Jo near the centre circle in Chelseas 3-1 win at Eastlands on Saturday.
There appeared to be covering defenders, including Ricardo Carvalho.
Yet Halsey deemed the incident to be serious foul play and stood by his decision only for the FA panel to disagree after reviewing video evidence.
Halsey has now been demoted and will oversee Sundays League Two clash between Chester and Shrewsbury.
HAND ON HEART ... midfielder Frank Lampard is confident Chelsea will beat Manchester United
Ronaldo is set to be among the United substitutes against Villarreal in the Champions League tonight.
And United boss Alex Ferguson hopes the winger will be fit to face Chelsea.
But Lampard believes nothing can stop the Blues extending their lead over the reigning Premier League champions.
He said: "I don't know what the situation is with him and I'm not too concerned, really.
"He's probably the best player in the world having achieved what he did last year you can't take that away from him.
"But whether after a few months out they'll put him back in, I don't know.
"If they do, we'll have to deal with that. We're good enough to deal with United at their strongest we shouldn't want them weak.
"If they are strong, we still want to beat them.
"We're confident, the players are playing well, the team is playing well, we're playing good football and scoring goals.
"We know they've got quality and we're at home, we'll have the crowd behind us and we'll be going full pelt."

Marlon King, the striker sidelined by sacked technical director Rene Simoes, revealed yesterday that he, too, was unsure of why he was left out of the Jamaican squad for subsequent World Cup Qualifying games, but made it clear that he did not have a personal confrontation with the Brazilian.
King, 28, has however, admitted that he did express his disappointment to Simoes during the country's first World Cup Qualifier against the Bahamas on June 15 at the National Stadium, after being substituted in the 69th minute by Deon Burton, a hero of the 1998 World Cup team.
Undoubtedly Jamaica's premier striker, King was an unused substitute during the return leg, as Jamaica romped to a 13-0 aggregate win.
The Hull City striker, who scored a brace on Saturday to lead his English Premiership side to a surprise 2-1 win over Newcastle, has not been considered since then, fuelling speculations about a rift between himself and technical boss.
Speaking yesterday on KLAS Sport magazine programme Scoreboard, King said he didn't have any "personal confrontation" with the Brazilian coach, but like what is normal everywhere else, he said players are free to express an opinion or make suggestions to their coaches.
"And that's all I did," said King.
"I just said (to Simoes) that I was disappointed," he added, regarding his playing time.
When asked about his interest to re-join the Reggae Boyz for their upcoming assignments, King responded in the affirmative.
"I'm always ready. Whenever called upon I'm always there," he said.
Simoes was fired after Jamaica lost 0-2 to Honduras on September 10, leaving the team with only a mathematical chance of qualifying, having just a point from three games.
Jamaica are at the bottom of the four-team Group B CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying Semi-Final Round, trailing leaders Mexico with maximum nine points and Honduras with six points. Canada are also on one point.
The England winger is the latest player to be sold by the Blues at a big loss.
Since billionaire Roman Abramovich parked up at Stamford Bridge five years
ago, they have offloaded a string of stars for a lot less than the price
they paid for them.
Chief executive Peter Kenyon has previously claimed the club aims to become
self-sustaining next season.
But on the evidence of their recent dealings in the transfer market, the Blues
have a long way to go.
Ive picked the most shocking losses during the Abramovich era excusing
Claude Makeleles exit on a free this summer given his age.
Let me know what you think of the list and Chelseas transfer policy.
No10: Khalid Bhoularouz Jose Mourinho hailed Khalid the Cannibal after his £8m arrival after earning a reputation as a fearsome defender. But Bhoularouz failed to nail down a regular spot and was soon shipped out on loan to Seville. He completed a switch to Hamburg this summer for around half the fee he cost two years ago. |
No9: Asier Del Horno Another odd signing from Mourinho. Despite possessing Wayne Bridge in the pre-Ashley Cole days of 2005, the Blues paid £8m for left-back Del |
No8: Scott Parker Flush with Abramovichs cash at the start of 2005, Claudio Ranieri opted to splash out £10m on Parker. The midfielder emerged as a true star at |
No7: Geremi One of the first to join at the start of Abramovichs money-mad era. |

No5: Shaun Wright-Phillips Wright-Phillips was supposed to the answer to Chelseas search for a natural right winger even though there was shock at the £21m fee. Mourinho and later Avram Grant failed to find room for his talent and it was no surprise when Phil Scolari let him go. Even at a loss of £12m. |
No4: Juan Veron Even without the aid of hindsight, this was arguably Chelseas oddest buy. Veron was a huge failure at Manchester United but the Blues gave him a |
No3: Adrian Mutu Chelsea splashed out £15.8m on Mutu in 2003 but he was sacked for taking cocaine a year later. The Blues effectively gave the striker away for free, with Juventus signing him after his seven-month suspension. However, the star has now been ordered to pay Chelsea over £13m in damages. |
No2: Hernan Crespo The Argentina ace carved out a reputation as one of the worlds deadliest strikers during his time in Italy. Crespos arrival for £16.8m in |
No1: Andriy Shevchenko This list has featured a string of huge losses but none of them come close to the Shevchenko saga. Signed for a British record £30m in 2006, the |
BABY BLUES ... Robinho's goal not enough for City
The £33million Brazilian sent the Manchester City fans wild when he scored his first goal with just 13 minutes gone.
But Ricardo Carvalho equalised for the Blues just three minutes later to calm the celebrations.
And despite chances for both sides in the first half, it took until the 53rd minute before Frank Lampard gave Chelsea the lead.
Big Phil Scolari's side went on to dominate the second half with Nicolas Anelka adding a third with 20 minutes left.
John Terry's straight red card for a foul on Jo looked to have given City a lifeline.
But Mark Hughes' side failed to fire in front of goal and Chelsea held on for a comfortable win.

Chelsea made an outstanding start in their Group A match with Bordeaux, racing into a 2-0 lead inside 30 minutes. Frank Lampard headed home a Jose Bosingwa cross after 14 minutes, his 18th goal in Europe, equalling a club record. Joe Cole's flicked header from a Lampard corner made it 2-0 before Lampard spurned the chance for a third, somehow contriving to miss the goal from around eight yards out.
Luiz Felipe Scolari's side went into cruise control in the second half, content to hit their punchless opponents on the break. Florent Malouda did make it 3-0 eight minutes from time, latching on to a backheel from Lampard and producing an inch-perfect shot across the goalkeeper which went in off the far post and Nicolas Anelka added a fourth in the final minute after Juliano Belletti's long-rangeshot had come back of the crossbar.Chelsea | 4 : 0 Final | Bordeaux

United travel to the capital aiming to get their Premier League title challenge back on track after last weekend's defeat at Liverpool.
Berbatov missed Wednesday's goalless draw with Villarreal in the Champions League with a knee injury he sustained on his debut at Anfield.
Ferguson is keen to have the Bulgaria international available for the trip to the Bridge and he is also boosted by the return of Paul Scholes after suspension.
"I think he (Berbatov) has a good chance and hopefully he is fit," Ferguson told Sky Sports News.
"Scholes is back from suspension, which is of course a plus for us, Vidic is suspended and that is why I played Jonny Evans (against Villarreal) and he did very well indeed.
"I think if we get Berbatov available and Scholesy back, then I have some selections to make."
United have made a slow start to the season, winning only one of their opening five games in all competitions, but Ferguson is confident they will soon find their best form.
"It is a big game, they are all big games now," added Ferguson.
"We have yet to reach our peak and it is the same as last season. Normally around October you will see us much, much better."
Former England international John Barnes has been named as the new national coach of Jamaica.
The 44-year-old Jamaican-born former Liverpool winger has been chosen to replace Brazilian Rene Simoes, who was sacked as technical director last week.
"The Jamaica Football Federation announces the appointment of Mr Barnes and he will take up official duties on 1 November," said a statement.
Barnes' last post in management ended with the sack at Celtic in 2000.
The JFF statement continued: "Mr Barnes will be in charge of the preparation of the national team for the Digicel Caribbean Cup (DCC) between 1 and 15 December and the Concacaf Gold Cup scheduled for June 2009.
"He will also be in charge of the final round of World Cup Qualifiers in 2009, should Jamaica advance to this stage of the competition.
"Mr Barnes' contract will be reviewed following the aforementioned events."
Jamaica are currently last in their four-team World Cup qualifying group on one point from three games, with three games remaining.
To have a chance of advancing to the final stage of the Concacaf qualifying round, they must beat Mexico, Honduras and Canada and hope other results go their way.
Former Hull and Tranmere midfielder Theodore Whitmore will take charge of those World Cup games, staying on as Barnes' assistant thereafter.
Goals from Sergio Ramos and Ruud van Nistelrooy had put Madrid firmly in control before BATE's Anri Khagush was dismissed to make their uphill task all-but impossible.
Heavily favoured for a comfortable home win, Madrid wasted little time creating chances, but Van Nistelrooy could not find the target from close range in the third minute.
BATE responded with an ambitious long-range effort from Vladimir Rzhevskiy but showed little sign of breaking down the Madrid defence, and the hosts were soon back on the attack.
Guti missed a great chance in the seventh minute, but they did not have to wait long to get their noses in front as Guti turned provider, finding the run of Sergio Ramos for the attack-minded defender to fire home in the 11th minute.
There was no let up from Madrid, with Raul firing wide moments later.
Iker Casillas was called on to make his first save in the 14th minute, easily holding Khagush's header from Igor Stasevich's free-kick.
Back at the other end, Van Nistelrooy and Arjen Robben both went close as the shots rained in on Sergey Veremko's goal.
BATE could still not find a way through the Madrid backline, and Mikhail Sivakov settled for a long-range shot in the 27th minute, but sent his effort wide left.
Summer-signing Rafael van der Vaart was the next to try his luck for Madrid, but his 20-yard effort sailed over the crossbar.
Madrid's rhythm was upset briefly when Fernando Gago hobbled off to be replaced by Mahamadou Diarra 10 minutes before half-time.
BATE came forward one more time before the break, but Vladislav Mirchev's ambitious volley from the edge of the area did not trouble Casillas.
The first half ended with Robben missing a great chance for the hosts, heading over from close range after getting up to meet Van der Vaart's free-kick,
Viktor Goncharenko sought to change things at half-time, bringing on Maksim Zhavnerchik to replace Stasevich, but the substitution did little to stem the flow of Madrid attacks, with Veremko soon forced to parry Sergio Ramos' shot to safety.
The Madrid pressure was increasing as Veremko was in action again moments later to tip Robben's shot around the post, but there was nothing he could do in the 57th minute as Van Nistelrooy got free close to goal and fired the ball home.
That was still not enough to satisfy Madrid who attacked again straight away, with Diarra's shot charged down by Alexey Khaletsky.
Whatever slim chances remained of BATE getting back into the game were effectively ended in the 62nd minute when Khagush picked up a second yellow card for a foul on Diarra.
Maksim Zhavnerchik launched another long-range effort for the visitors but was again off target, and their job for the rest of the night was reduced to damage limitation as they defended in numbers against Madrid.
Substitute Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Ramos both had chances in the 77th and 78th minutes but neither could find the target, and Veremko was on hand to keep out Van der Vaart's shot as time ran down.
Deep into injury time the Dutchman had one more chance to add to his Madrid account, but Veremko tipped his shot around the post.

It took 10 minutes for the teams to settle at the Stadio Olimpico before Zenit got the first glimpse of goal when Portuguese midfielder Danny pushed his close-range shot past the left post.
David Trezeguet then gave the home crowd hope four minutes later when he got his head to Del Piero's cross but the French striker also steered the final ball wide.
That chance sparked a spell of pressure from Claudio Ranieri's side though with Zenit defender Sebastien Puygrenier twice called upon to clear dangerous-looking shots from Mohamed Sissoko.
And Juve came even closer to taking the lead after 24 minutes when a Del Piero free-kick was headed onto the post by Mauro Camoranesi.
Their rhythm was interrupted on the half-hour mark though when an injury to Camoranesi saw the midfielder replaced by Hasan Salihamidzic.
And with Juve still reorganising, Danny tried his luck with a 20-yard drive for Zenit which dipped over the crossbar.
But that was as good as it got for either side as the interval arrived with no further chances in what was a disappointing end to the half.
The crowd were at least treated to a much livelier start to the second half as first Trezuguet fired narrowly over the crossbar before Juve keeper Gianluigi Buffon made his first real save of the match following a teasing cross-shot from Andrei Arshavin.
The chances continued to come and in the 53rd minute a corner from Del Piero allowed Giorgio Chiellini a strike from 12 yards which trickled past the right post.
Buffon was also busy at the other end of the pitch, parrying away Radek Sirl's left-footed drive moments later.
As the match entered the last 20 minutes, Juve began to increase the pressure on their opponents and Zenit goalkeeper Viacheslav Malafeev did well to tip away Christian Poulsen's header from a Del Piero free-kick.
But there was nothing the Russian could do to keep out another Del Piero free-kick after 75 minutes as the Italy international lashed his set-piece into the top right corner.
Zenit tried to produce an immediate response but Igor Denisov wasted an opening for the visitors while substitute Alejandro Dominguez drove another shot straight into the hands of Buffon.
Juve also had chances as the clock ticked down and Malafeev was called upon three minutes from time as Sissoko looked to claim a second goal for the hosts.
And it was the last chance for either side as Juve made a winning start to their Group H campaign.

Trailing in the Stade Velodrome, the Liverpool captain collected a square pass from Dirk Kuyt just outside the penalty area after 26 minutes and produced a wonderful first-time curling shot which dropped into the far corner of the net. It was a marvellous goal and could hardly have been better placed.
Gerrard added a second on the half-hour, converting a twice-taken penalty after Ryan Babel had been felled in the area for what turned out to be the winner.
Marseilles had gone in front after 23 minutes, Lorik Cana being allowed to run unchecked and collect a through-ball after Javier Mascherano had pushed up hoping for an offside flag

"I think the fans understand the situation with a young man being tempted by the lure of money in a way."
The Portugal winger is making his return after undergoing ankle surgery two months ago, just in time for the start of United's European title defense. His presence has taken on greater importance with forward Dimitar Berbatov doubtful after hurting his knee in Saturday's defeat at Liverpool.
Ronaldo scored 42 goals as United won the European and English double last season, playing with pain in his right ankle for the final two months of the campaign.
Ferguson said Ronaldo's commitment is evident in his swift comeback, although he is expected to be a substitute Wednesday.
"It is one of best recoveries I have ever seen," Ferguson said. "Every day, he has been training through till 5 p.m. and has showed a real determination to return to playing for us."
His return has galvanized a squad shaken by its first defeat at Liverpool in seven years. In addition, Michael Carrick has been ruled out for up to six weeks after sustaining a broken foot in the game.
Forward Carlos Tevez said Ronaldo will give United a renewed impetus.
"Ronaldo is a massive player for us and his great to have one out side," Tevez said. "It is almost like having an extra player on your side when he plays for you because he is such a danger to our opponents so it will be a boost for us.
"We have always come back stronger and that was the reason we won two titles last year. I do think you will see a reaction from the players tomorrow."
Ferguson won a second Champions League title in May when United beat Chelsea in a penalty shootout in Moscow, following the comeback win over Bayern Munich in 1999. Under Matt Busby, United won the European Cup in 1968.
Ferguson claims United winning three European Cup titles is unsatisfactory compared to other big European clubs.
"We should have won the European Cup more times and hopefully we will win it more times again," Ferguson said. "We can make it four, which is a more respectable record in Europe, given the records of Bayern (four), Ajax (4), Liverpool (5), AC Milan (7) and Real Madrid (9).
"That's the challenge - to make more history for the club."
Villarreal drew 0-0 with United at Old Trafford in November 2005, and achieved the same score in eastern Spain when Wayne Rooney was sent off.
United failed to advance from the group stage that season, causing speculation over Ferguson's future.
"That was a difficult period, the team was changing," Ferguson said. "There were too many young players ... since then we've accepted the challenge and got on with it."
Villarreal will be without injured strikers Nihat Kahveci and Giuseppe Rossi, while Jozy Altidore was omitted from the squad by coach Manuel Pellegrini.
Robert Pires hopes to make his 75th Champions League appearance and his first since losing the 2006 final to FC Barcelona with Arsenal.
"We'll play our football and go out looking to do things as we do every game," the French midfielder said. "To us, it should be equal whether you play against Manchester or against Alborg. ... If we play our football and take advantage of our options, we can win, without a doubt."

IRWIN, St James - Iona High scored their biggest win in the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup Football competition yesterday after trouncing Islington High 7-0 in their opening Zone K game played at Clemhards Park.
Yesterday's win snapped a six-game losing streak against Islington for Iona, dating back to the 2005 season during which time they managed just one point against them.
The win gave Iona the lead in Zone K on goal difference ahead of Tacky and St Mary Technical, who scored 1-0 wins over Brimmervale and Oracabessa, respectively.
The game between Annotto Bay High and St Mary high was not played as a number of players did not have the official ISSA ID cards.
Meanwhile, in Zone A, 10-man Maldon High celebrated their return to the competition after a one-year absence, scoring their first ever win over former champions Herbert Morrison Technical 2-1 in Montego Bay.
The win took Maldon to the top of the points tables in Zone A and was their first win in the daCosta Cup since upsetting Cornwall College 1-0 in the first round of the 2006 competition.
Jermaine Jackson, who was later sent off after collecting his second yellow card in less then 10 minutes, and O'Brian Robinson scored for Maldon, while Brishnell Dawkins scored for Herbert Morrison.
Jackson gave Maldon the lead in the 55th minute when he converted from the penalty spot after a Herbert Morrison player handled the ball.
Dawkins, however, levelled the scores in the 70th minute when he netted from just outside the Maldon six-yard area.
The celebration from the home team lasted just two minutes, as Robinson beat the Herbert Morrison defence to a ball on the left side and punched it into the goal past goalkeeper Hosani Hirvey.
Robinson was substituted a few minutes later after he picked up a leg injury.
In the other Zone A game played yesterday, newcomers Green Pond and Irwin High played out a 0-0 draw at Irwin.
Meanwhile, three former champions - Frome Technical High, Munro College and St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) will be in action this afternoon as the competition continues with 15 games.
Frome will be away to Anchovy in a Zone B encounter after the home team played in Zone A last season.
Munro College will be away to Balaclava in Zone E, while STETHS, under new coach Andrew Edwards, will host Maggotty.

Michael Carrick looks certain to miss the start of Manchester United's Champions League campaign against Villarreal tomorrow night - while Dimitar Berbatov also missed the start of training this morning.
Carrick had been a major doubt for the game, after he limped out of Saturday's Barclays Premier League defeat at Liverpool with an ankle injury, however Berbatov's absence from training was more of a surprise.
The Bulgarian striker took a knock at Anfield but did complete the full 90 minutes and was expected to be part of Ferguson's squad for their first Champions League game since beating Chelsea in a penalty shoot-out to lift the trophy in Moscow last May.
There has been no word on whether the 27-year-old has a chance of being fit, however, if Berbatov is missing, United should have Manucho, the Angolan forward, available after he recovered from a broken metatarsalCalabar, St George's score big victories

Olympic gold medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser (left) with mother Maxine Simpson and high school coach, Michael Carr, leaving the Norman Manley International Airport yesterday evening.
On Monday night when many people gathered to welcome home two more of Jamaica's athletes, it was an emotional embrace between Shelly-Ann Fraser and her grandmother that seemed to be the happiest moment of all.
Fraser, the Olympic 100 metre gold medalist and Markino Buckley, Olympic 400 metre hurdles finalist, were welcomed back to Jamaica in a small and hastily arranged reception at the VIP room of the Norman Manley International Airport.
Several minutes into the press conference hosted by Minister of Sport, Olivia 'Babsy' Grange, Phedalia Simpson, Fraser's grandmother walked in and immediately Fraser began to cry, bowing her head while she quietly tried to compose herself.
The tears however could not be contained and Grange immediately invited Simpson to come and share a moment with Fraser. Both embraced for several minutes crying tears of joy. Simpson later told THE STAR that this was the first time she was seeing Fraser since she won the gold medal and seeing her brought back all the emotions she felt when she won. "Everything came back to me, knowing that she reach thus far," she said.
Earlier, residents of Waterhouse crowded the airport to welcome home their star. Many arrived from early afternoon on buses that carried people from the community. "Today when I come home from school, I heard she was coming so I decided to come on one of the buses and come and show my support," Yanique Jarrett, a high school student said.
Although she had homework to do, that did not stop her, but she promised to do it as soon as went home.
As soon as Fraser and Buckley exited the airport, there a mad dash to touch them as many eager people ran with the vehicle until it turned on to the straightway leading out of the airport.

HERE'S how five Old Trafford legends fared in their first game:
BRYAN ROBSON
ROBBOS first game after his record £1.5million switch from West Brom was a 1-0 defeat at Spurs in the League Cup on October 7, 1981.
ROY KEANE
KEANO made an impressive debut as United beat Arsenal on penalties in the 1993 Charity Shield at Wembley, courtesy of a shootout miss by David Seaman.
DAVID BECKHAM
BECKS was introduced as a second-half sub in a League Cup win over Brighton in 1992.
ERIC CANTONA
KING ERICS debut was a cameo as a late sub in Uniteds 2-1 win over Manchester City at Old Trafford on December 6, 1992.
WAYNE ROONEY
ROO made one of the greatest United debuts of all time, netting a hat-trick in a 6-2 Champions League win over Fenerbahce on September 28, 2004.
KING OF THE CASTLE ... Marlon King celebrates
The managerless Magpies were played off the pitch at times by Hull.
And King was the star as he netted either side of half time.
Toon new-boy Xisco grabbed his first goal but Danny Guthrie was sent off for a reckless lunge late on.
Newcastle caretaker boss Chris Hughton refused to blame his side's off-field problems for the defeat.
He said: "The easy thing would be for me to say yes, the events of the last few weeks had a bearing on the result.
"Probably more to the point was we certainly have got a few injuries in vital positions and we had a few players coming back late from international duty, which is the norm that everybody has to accept and put up with.
"But the preparation with what we have got has been good. I can't fault the attitude and the professionalism of the players.
"We had a starting line-up of 11 players that was good enough in my mind to certainly win the game today, but it wasn't to be."
Hull boss Phil Brown, a Sunderland fan as a child, feels his side have proved their doubters wrong.
He said: "Maybe we are getting one or two monkeys off our backs that we were going to be automatic cannon fodder for going down.
"I don't know. I hope it doesn't alert too many people's attention to the fact we can play a little bit because then all of a sudden, the big boys put the big guns out.
"But to me personally, it means I have come back to the North East for the first time since 1985 when I left Hartlepool, and it's a great moment for me and my family."
Newcastle were given an early warning when King's cross found Peter Halmosi, whose shot was blocked by Edgar.
On 10 minutes, Craig Fagan found space on the left but he failed to trouble Shay Given.
Toon new-boy Xisco had his first chance soon after. Charles N'Zogbia picked the Spaniard out from a corner but he headed high over.
King then warmed Given's hands with a well-struck shot after Fagan had done well to find him in the inside-right channel.
Guthrie had Newcastle's best effort of the match when he latched onto Geremi's cross but he could only fire wide.
As the Magpies turned up the heat and Michael Owen went close from Geremi's free-kick.
They were made to pay when Hull took the lead on 34 minutes.
Nicky Butt brought down Halmosi in the box and referee Marriner pointed to the spot.
Given got a hand to King's penalty but could not stop it from nestling inside his right post.
Newcastle hit back before the break though and Geremi scuffed a shot wide from Xisco's lay-off before Shola Ameobi headed wide.
The home fans were given hope when N'Zogbia curled an inviting 70th-minute cross into the box.
But Xisco could not get on the end of it with the goal at his mercy.
The Magpies finally got themselves back into the game nine minutes from time when N'Zogbia's shot came back off the post and Xisco slotted home the rebound.
Fabricio Coloccini headed wide from N'Zogbia's 83rd-minute corner and Xisco was just off target three minutes later.
But Guthrie was sent off a a wild lunge at Fagan deep into injury time as the game ended on a sour note.

The Republic of Ireland striker's penthouse apartment was broken into while he was playing in his country's 2-1 win over Georgia on Saturday.
The thieves sneaked into the flat he shares with model wife Claudine, 25, and are believed to have stolen an expensive watch and jewellery.

Over the past two years six Anfield stars, including Steven Gerrard and former Red Peter Crouch, have been burgled while playing.
Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury.
Essien suffered the knee injury during Ghana's defeat to Libya last Friday.
It was feared the midfield powerhouse had suffered a serious injury and Chelsea have confirmed Essien has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.
The former Lyon star is now expected to undergo surgery and he is likely to be sidelined for up to six months with the problem.
A Chelsea statement read: "Michael Essien suffered a knee injury playing for Ghana on Friday.
"He has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and will undergo an operation as soon as the majority of the swelling has subsided. We expect this to happen in a week's time.
"In the meantime Michael has started rehab in the aqua therapy centre at Cobham which will improve the condition of the knee prior to surgery. A return to full fitness is not expected for several months."
Essien admitted he was devastated by the injury which will see him miss a large chunk of the season.
"There was no challenge but after I cut out a cross and landed I felt awkward and the pain was sharp. I am devastated but these things happen in football," Essien told KickOffGhana.com.
GOAL HERO ... Ryan Babel celebrates
The Premier League champions made the perfect start with Berbatov laying on a goal for strike partner Carlos Tevez after just three minutes.
Berbatov, playing in a central role with Wayne Rooney wide on the right, found space to cut the ball back to an unmarked Tevez to calmly sidefoot the ball home past Pepe Reina.
But the debutant's regular moody expression quickly returned when Edwin Van der Sar palmed a cross onto Wes Brown for the cruellest of own goals to gift the hosts an equaliser in the 27th minute.
Berbatov's misery was completed 13 minutes from time when Babel slammed home from Dirk Kuyt's pass.
And United's day went from bad to worse when defender Nemanja Vidic was red-carded for a second yellow in the 90th minute.
Liverpool ace Jamie Carragher was delighted to see his side finally get one over their fierce rivals after five successive league defeats against United.
The defender said: "It's been too long and its not just the three points it's also the belief and confidence it gives us because we've beaten the best team in Europe.
"It gives us the belief that we can beat anyone in the league.
"We hope we can now push on for the rest of the season. It should spur us on because we've not been playing too well up to now.
"That is the best we've played. It also gives us a bit of breathing space between us and United and top of the table is where a club like Liverpool should be."
Reds boss Rafael Benitez was also pleased to see his side bounce back after Tevez's early strike.
And he highlighted the performance of strike duo Robbie Keane and Dirk Kuyt as the inspiration behind the win.
He said: "It was good for the confidence of the players.
"At half-time we were talking about having confidence and determination going forward and in the second half we were the best team.
"We showed quality and character to come back and the understanding of Keane and Kuyt was very good.
"Their pressing was really important for the rest of the team."

LORD EMMANUEL ... Adebayor celebrates
Arsene Wenger's side dominated from the first minute to the last at Ewood Park.
Robin Van Persie had opened the scoring on eight minutes after good work by England star Theo Walcott.
On the stroke of half-time Adebayor made it 2-0.
And after looking comfortable during the second half, Adebayor fired twice for Arsenal in the last 10 minutes to seal the victory.
Gunners boss Wenger was delighted with the performance.
The Frenchman said: "We looked dangerous and fluent going forward. It was a well-accomplished victory.
"You can be successful when you express your strengths and we did that today.
"Blackburn are dangerous going forward and I am happy we did not concede any goals.
"It is another big game on Wednesday and in the Champions League it is important to start well.
"We are in a tough group and Kiev are experienced as well as being a strong side at home.
"This victory, however, will give us confidence as we know we will have to put in a similar performance next week."
Blackburn boss Paul Ince described his side's defending as suicidal.
He said: "The goal just before half-time killed us.
"We lost concentration, it was suicidal defending. You cannot give any team a two-goal start, least of all Arsenal.
They are an excellent side. I am glad we do not have to play them every week which is a good thing.
"Even though we are playing well and creating chances, we have got to look at our defensive work."
Arsenal got off to a flying start when Cesc Fabregas was tripped by Keith Andrews.
But Van Persie blazed his 25-yard free kick over the bar.
The Dutchman made up for missing the target in the eighth minute with a stunning goal.
Walcott cut inside and weaved his way past two defenders before picking out Van Persie, who directed the cross past Paul Robinson.
Blackburn hit back and almost equalised two minutes later.
Manuel Almunia was forced into a superb save to tip Roque Santa Cruz's effort over the bar.
Despite the chance, Arsenal remained on top. Walcott was narrowly off target after linking up with Adebayor.
Van Persie came close in the 29th minute but he found the side-netting.
Walcott then found Adebayor on the right and he squared the ball to Fabregas whose shot was blocked by Stephen Warnock.
Blackburn had a bright spell on the half hour though.
First, Almunia denied Emerton in the 33rd minute and five minutes later, Clichy cleared Morten Gamst Pedersen's dangerous inswinging cross.
Kolo Toure was then forced into a last-ditch tackle to deny Santa Cruz at the back post.
Arsenal responded immediately but Van Persie's left-foot attempt was off-target.
And in stoppage time, the Gunners' class told when Adebayor headed home the second.
The Togo ace was left unmarked at the back post and thumped in Denilson's cross.
The Arsenal fans were on their feet two minutes into the second half.
Walcott skipped away from Ryan Nelsen and homed in on goal, stinging Robinson's gloves with his strike.
Arsenal kept up the pressure and Toure found Walcott but his cross was headed wide by Adebayor.
Walcott then saw his shot spin off Nelsen for a corner following a flowing move which split open the defence.
Toure was then left frustrated at failing to score with a header before Eboue's effort from distance was gathered safely by Robinson.
Adebayor grabbed his second after Eboue was fouled in the box.
The big stiker made no mistake from the spot with 10 minutes left.
Sub Aaron Ramsey picked out Adebayor in injury time who the rounded Robinson for his hat-trick.
