MUNICH, Germany (AFP) The fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt, may be off the athletics circuit for the rest of the year, but the Jamaican has given warning that he wouldn't mind turning his skills to football.
The 23-year-old Olympic and world champion and world record-holder for both the 100m and 200m paid a visit to the Bayern Munich training camp on Tuesday where he declared he was "a big football fan".
Bolt admitted that although he had been a decent schoolboy footballer, his ball control might not be quite good enough to launch a new career.
"But I am going to try to work on it and maybe next season I can play at Bayern," he joked with the side's coach Louis van Gaal.
Bolt, who was given a team jersey by midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, was in Munich to consult with his doctor Hans Muller-Wohlfahrt -- who is also the physician at Bayern about his troublesome back.
On Tuesday he announced that he would be taking the rest of the season off to recover.
"It is very disappointing, but it is better not to take any risks this year," said Bolt who added that he was hoping to come back fast enough to take a crack at his own 100m record.
"My ambition for next year is to beat my world record," he said.
LONDON, United Kingdom Tyson Gay insists finally getting one over sprint superstar and arch-rival Usain Bolt has provided athletics with a much-needed shot in the arm.
American sprinter Gay heads into the two-day Diamond League meeting here at Crystal Palace, which begins tomorrow, full of confidence following his victory over Jamaica's Bolt in the 100 metres in Stockholm last week, his first-ever win against the world and Olympic champion.
Bolt may have been struggling with a back problem during that race and he has since announced he will not be competing for the rest of 2010 but Gay revealed his life had changed dramatically after last Fridays exploits in the Swedish capital.
"The win really meant a lot to me it was very important for myself, and also for the sport," Gay told reporters here this morning.
"I know this may sound weird but I have received more attention for that victory than I did when I won (gold in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m) in the 2007 World Championships.
"That race, even though there weren't any medals on the line, it really meant a lot to people and to the fans of the sport. I got to see other people happy. It was a good day for the sport," Gay added.
The American looks to have victory in the 100m sewn up in London on Friday following the withdrawal of Asafa Powell, the Jamaican who has run the world's joint-fastest time in the sprint this year at 9.82 seconds
Powell said he had failed to recover from the ongoing back problems which forced him out of the Stockholm meeting last week.
A Russian finalist at the World Sauna Championships in Finland died Saturday and the event was suspended, according to the organizers, the AP reported.
Both of the events finalists -- Russia's Vladimir Ladyzhensky and Finland's Timo Kaukonen -- were rushed to the hospital after collapsing during the competition, in which contestants are made to endure temperatures of 230 degrees Fahrenheit (110 degrees Celsius) for as long as they can. Ladyzhensky later died.
The event, which has been held since 1999, was taking place in Heinola, Finland, which is 86 miles north of Helsinki.
While police have launched an investigation, the organizer of the event, Ossi Arvela, said in a statement: "All the rules were followed and there was enough first aid personnel. All the competitors needed to sign in to the competition with a doctor's certificate."
The Finnish news agency STT reported that both men suffered burns on their body and that the competition was cut short after six minutes,
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Police say a traffic stop led to animal cruelty charges after they found a live cat "marinating" in oil and peppers in the trunk of a car.
Buffalo police say officers heard the cat meowing when they stopped 51-year-old Gary Korkuc of Cheektowaga to ticket him for running a stop sign Sunday night.
They say they checked the trunk and found 4-year-old Navarro in a cage, his fur covered with oil, crushed red peppers and chili peppers.
Police say Korkuc told them he did it because Navarro was ill-tempered. Korkuc was charged with cruelty and released; his phone number isn't listed.
Police say he told them he was going to cook Navarro. Korkuc also told officers a number of things that didn't make sense, including that his neutered male cat was pregnant.
Animal advocates have cleaned Navarro and put him up for adoption
Coming off a rare loss at 100 meters, Olympic and world champion Usain Bolt is cutting his season short, saying he won't race again in 2010 because of tightness in his lower back.
The Jamaican's manager, Ricky Simms, wrote in an e-mail Tuesday that the world record-holder at 100 and 200 meters will have treatment to loosen his back and then rest, skipping IAAF Diamond League track and field meets in Zurich on Aug. 19, and in Brussels on Aug. 27.
"It is better for me not to take any risks this year," Bolt said, according to Simms. "2011 and 2012 are very important ... and I hope to be back fully fit and healthy. I ... look forward to coming back stronger next year."
Bolt hadn't lost an individual race in two years until Friday, when Tyson Gay of the United States beat him at the DN Galan meet in Stockholm. Gay ran 9.84 seconds, and Bolt finished in 9.97 nearly 0.40 slower than his record for the 100.
Given the 6-foot-5 Bolt's recent dominance and his dynamic, crowd-pleasing personality, the sabbatical he's taking is a blow to track and field in the short term, but should give the sport a boost when he returns.
Just ask Gay, who already is looking forward to taking on Bolt again sometime next year.
"It's kind of like boxers everyone is waiting for 2 heavyweights to clash. So when they do clash, it's exciting. But you don't see the heavyweights fight 2-3 times a year," Gay wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Tuesday. "So even though I was hoping we (would) race 2-3 times for the fans this year, him taking his break to get healthy for next year will make things that much more exciting for 2011!"
Ato Boldon agrees.
Boldon won four sprint medals at the 1996 and 2000 Summer Games and now is a TV analyst. He knows a good story line when he sees it.

Antonio Pettigrew, a former sprinter who was stripped of a gold medal he won at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, was found dead on Tuesday. He was 42 years old.
According to the AP, his body was found in his car in Chatham County, North Carolina.
At the time of his death, Pettigrew worked as a track assistant at the University of North Carolina, the Charlotte Observer reports.
UNC athletic director Dick Baddour issued the following statement:
"Although we are still learning the circumstances, we are deeply saddened to learn of Antonio's death. I was particularly impressed with the relationships he established with his student-athletes and the pride he took in representing the University of North Carolina. Our deepest condolences go out to Antonio's family, particularly his wife and son."
Pettigrew won an Olympic gold medal in the 4x400 relay in 2000, but he was later stripped of the award after admitting to using performance-enhancing drugs.
Buju Banton
Deejay Buju Banton may be behind bars but that hasn't stopped his musical career. His record label, Gargamel Music, is looking to release his ninth studio album soon.
In jail on drug charges since last December, Banton has been in the headlines but relatively quiet on the musical scene. According to his official website thisisbujubanton.-wordpress.com, Gargamel Music is preparing for the release of his newest album titled Before The Dawn.
The album is set for release in North America on Tuesday, September 28. The website stated, "The 10 powerful tracks that comprise this very special project are some of the more prophetic songs written by Banton since his extraordinary entry into the music business over 20 years ago."
It added: "Recorded mostly at his Gargamel Music studio in Kingston, Jamaica, Before The Dawn literally pierces the soul with traditional roots, easy rock and especially heartfelt reggae. The album's unofficial anthem Innocent, strikes a highly personal chord that will resonate deeply with longtime Buju Banton fans."
The website also added that Banton will be appearing in court for the start of his trial on Monday, September 13, at the Sam M Gibbons US District Courthouse in Tampa, Florida. This is the fourth time the trial has been rescheduled.
As previously reported in THE WEEKEND STAR, a request for Banton to be tried separately from his two co-accused has been rejected by a court in the United States in July. Banton had applied to the US District Court in the Middle District of Florida, Tampa Division, to have his trial separated from Ian Thomas and James 'Spencer Clarke' Mack on the basis that this could be the reason the trial was being delayed.
Banton and his two co-accused were arrested late last year and charged with conspiracy with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime. The three have been in custody since then awaiting trial.
Lady Gaga wants you to know shes a rock star. The eccentric singer stage dived into the audience during Semi Precious Weapons set at Lollapalooza 2010 in Chicago on Friday (Aug. 6). After being reeled in by security, a nearly-nude Gaga jumped right back in, seeming to enjoy the groping from concertgoers.
If anyone ever calls Lady Gaga a fu**ing pop star, I will kill you, said Semi Precious Weapons frontman Justin Tranter. Semi Precious Weapons and Lady Gaga proved at Lollapalooza 2010 that rock n roll is fu**ing back.
Montana Fishburne conducted an exclusive interview with Blackvoices.com. The daughter of hollywood veteran Laurence Fishburne has aroused a great deal of conversation over her decision to start in an adult movie in the hopes of advancing her career.
In the interview she throws her music video co-star Brian Pumper under the bus and says that they dont speak anymore.
BV: So when you were Chippy D you were with him?
MF: No, that was for a music video. I knew him and that was it.
BV: Do you think Brian Pumper will have a rap career now that he has a video out?
MF: No, I dont think his music appeals to the mainstream.
BV: When are we going to see you and him in action?
MF: Me and Brian are no longer in contact.
BV: Do you think hes exploiting you?
MF: Yes, I feel taken advantage by Brian Pumper. I dont really want to go into details about the situation. Jeremy, he feels for me, he knows how I feel about it. He has talked to Brian, and they have dealt with each other, because I dont even want to deal with him anymore. Im not in contact with Brian Pumper, and Im just trying to get rid of the situation.
Laurence Fishburne's wannabe porn star daughter was arrested last year for alleged prostitution, according to newly uncovered court records.
The Matrix star was said to be furious after his teenage daughter Montana announced plans to release an adult video later this month.
But the actor has had other things to worry about in the past - the 19-year-old nearly ended up in jail after she was caught reportedly selling sex, according to legal documents filed in the Superior Court of California and obtained by EOnline.com.
Last March, Montana pleaded no contest to criminal trespass and officials agreed to drop charges of solicitation and loitering in public for the purpose of prostitution, the website states.
She was handed two years probation and 15 days in jail but avoided prison time after agreeing to complete a community service sentence.

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has congratulated Jamaica on the country's 48th anniversary of its Independence.
Following is the text of Clinton's message:
"On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Jamaica on the 48th anniversary of your Independence this August 6. We join you in celebrating the rich history and culture of Jamaica and honouring the many accomplishments of the Jamaican people.
"Our two nations are united by our shared history, values, and hopes for the future. We work together through Caricom to promote regional security and stability, widen opportunity and prosperity, and strengthen democratic governance and the rule of law throughout the Caribbean and across the Americas.
"Jamaica's contributions to the relief and rebuilding efforts in Haiti, as well as its commitment to protecting its citizens, have distinguished your country as a determined and engaged regional partner. The United States is a stronger nation, thanks to the bonds of family, commerce, and culture we share with Jamaica.
"Former Secretary of State Colin Powell is among the many Americans of Jamaican heritage who have shaped our country and made important contributions to the global community. Today, we honour all Jamaicans and celebrate the vibrant friendship between our countries.
"On the anniversary of your Independence, I offer my warmest wishes to all Jamaicans for a peaceful and prosperous year."
PRIME Minister Bruce Golding said this morning that Jamaica has failed to achieve the dreams of equality, economic stability and basic community development embarked upon close to half a century ago when the country gained independence from Britain.
He said, however, that the dreams can still be attained with hard work, and are refreshed and renewed each time a Jamaican is born.
Golding was speaking at the Independence Day ceremony at Kings House this morning.
For his part, Governor General Sir Patrick Allen, reflecting a glimmer of hope, said that our dreams can be fulfilled and we can succeed if we believe in ourselves and our country.
He said the turbulent times seem to have shaken the faith of citizens, but we can take hope in the ability of our leaders to come together.
And Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller, in a message read by Bobby Pickersgill, said Jamaica has achieved much, despite the many drawbacks.
My brothers and sisters, the evidence [of achievement] is overwhelming despite our challenges, Simpson Miller said.
Jamaica celebrates its 48th anniversary of independence todayGOVERNOR General Sir Patrick Allen says Jamaica is still faced with many daunting prospects, among them the global economic situation which continues to haunt the nation, which today celebrates the 48th anniversary of independence.
But despite the challenges Sir Patrick said the valiant attempts to address the problems facing the nation appear to be bearing fruit.
We are acutely conscious of the need for restoration and healing as we continue our quest for justice, unity, peace and prosperity. It will require great courage and moral fortitude from each of us to stand against what is wrong within our nation and within ourselves, and to stand for what is right, Sir Patrick said in his independence message.
The nations children and youth, said the governor general, are resources that must be protected, socialised and trained to be worthwhile persons and valuable citizens.
He added that while Jamaicas journey over the past year has been interesting with its highs and lows, there has been positive strides in repairing, reconstructing, and rebuilding the damage.
The faith of some of our people may have been shaken by the turbulence in our country, but better yet, we have seen the collective will of our leaders and people to stand together when it matters, and with the help of the Almighty, still the storm, Sir Patrick said.
The anniversary of the nations independence, said the head of state, allows an opportunity for reflection, renewal and recommitment to the ongoing task of nation-building.
We have the ability to change our nation and the world. Let us seize the day and resolve that we will not give in to despair and hopelessness, he said.
Prime Minister Bruce Golding, in his Independence Day message, said Jamaica has come a long way over these 48 years but while much has been accomplished the dream of independence has not yet been fulfilled as much more remains to be done.
We have made mistakes along the way. There were times when we took the wrong turn and there were many opportunities that we missed, he said.
Despite the external forces and influence, Golding said the future and fortunes lie in the hands of Jamaicans.
As we celebrate our 48th anniversary, let us recommit ourselves to that task. Let us demonstrate the will and energy to make up the lost ground, fill the gaps that have been left behind, overcome the challenges that face us and go forward to break new ground and conquer new frontiers for the spirit of independence can never die, Golding said.
He noted that it was a memorable night 48 years ago when the Union Jack was respectfully lowered and the Black, Green and Gold hoisted as a symbol of Jamaicas nationhood.
With that flag was also raised our hopes and expectations as a people, he said.
Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller, in her message, said each step along the path to becoming a full free and independent nation represents progressive victories won by a determined people who refused to give up or to be deterred by what appeared to be insurmountable obstacles.
Independence, she said, is not to be seen as a single event.
It is part of the unending task of building a nation that exemplifies tolerance, decency, respect and unity, according to Simpson Miller.
She called on Jamaicans to draw strength from the energies of the thousands of Jamaicans who participated in and witnessed the first Independence Day celebration.
We must continue to fuel our journey toward national development by the great pride felt by all when the Black, Green and Gold of our National Flag was unfurled for the first time, she said.
Jamaica, said Simpson Miller, is a great nation with men and women who have made the country proud through their invaluable contributions in the fields of sport, science research and academics, agriculture, medicine, architecture, engineering, aviation, music and the creative arts and information technology.
