PALM HARBOR Last fall, authorities said, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper fired his gun nine times at a man suspected of stealing two bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches from a Palm Harbor gas station.

None of the bullets struck Magdi Kanaan, but Trooper Timothy E. Nichols will begin a one-week suspension without pay today.

"You deployed more force than necessary by shooting at a fleeing suspect," agency director John T. Czernis wrote in a Sept. 7 memo to Nichols.

The Oct. 10 shooting and subsequent car chase were captured on the trooper's dashboard camera. The Highway Patrol on Thursday released that footage and a narrative of the events that led to the shots being fired.

The 71/2-minute video opens with Nichols, a nine-year veteran of the department, driving at a high speed through a retirement center parking lot.

He'd just come from the Hess gas station on Nebraska Avenue, where a cashier reported that Kanaan had stolen sandwiches and fled.

Nichols caught up with the 22-year-old Palm Harbor man in the retirement center. Kanaan had his black sport utility vehicle in reverse.

Nichols stepped out of his patrol car and stood at its side. The SUV crept closer to the cruiser.

"He just backed into my car," Nichols yelled.

He pointed his department-issued Beretta toward the SUV and pumped nine bullets in its direction as Kanaan sped away.

Thursday, Highway Patrol spokesman Mark Welch said that he did not know where any of the bullets landed.

Nichols told officials that he that Kanaan was trying to run him over. Highway Patrol internal affairs investigators determined Kanaan was simply trying to park.

"Your recollection of the events contradicts the evidence on the videotape from your patrol car," Czernis wrote. "After reviewing the video tape of the incident, you agreed that the events did not take place exactly as you had remembered them. You stated that you felt justified in firing your weapon (and) you should not have fired as many rounds as you did."

Welch said Nichols shouldn't have fired at all and his actions were a "violation of the use of control policy."

After the shots were fired, Nichols hopped back in his car and chased Kanaan through neighborhood streets. The pursuit ended when one of Kanaan's tires gave way. Nichols arrested Kanaan on charges of theft, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and fleeing and eluding

DETROIT - This is a story with a huge twist. The suspected shooter, who is locked up at the Wayne County Jail, is nearly 90 years old with no criminal past.

In a Detroit Police mug shot, R. B. Theus posed without emotion, but his ex, who asked not to be identified, says his love for her turned to rage Saturday night. He allegedly fought with her current 48-year-old boyfriend during a birthday celebration at a home on Russell.

"He came up and hit him, and then he jumped up and they got to tussling over the gun, said the ex. "Everybody was running a gunshot and the gun waiving and stuff."

The victim is in temporary serious condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital. He was shot in the chest.

Police told us Theus was carrying a gun illegally.

"It could've killed him, me and the rest of my family. We all were out there, the ex said.

The suspect is facing half a dozen charges, the most severe being assault with intent to murder.

VIDEO INSIDE

There's never a shortage of %&%*ty parents to be found around this site, but this is definetly among the worst of the bunch.

Footage from a fight aboard a San Antonio bus last year has emerged and its simply unbelievable. While involved in an apparent argument, a mother whose child is strapped to her chest decides she gonna set things off by swinging on the other mother whose child is in a baby carrier placed on the seat. From there he fists fly.

Who the f*ck in they right mind would decide to elevate an already bad situation by taking a swing at someone while their baby is strapped to them?

Im fully knowledgable of 'on-sight beef' but certain things get no pass when you decide they mean more to you than the safety of your child.

A mother has been accused of robbing a bank - and then going on a school run to collect her children.

Erica Anderson was arrested shortly after she arrived home with her two young children after picking them up from their primary school.

Less than an hour earlier the 37-year-old is accused of walking into a bank in Grants Pass, Oregon, and handing a clerk a note demanding money.

After grabbing the cash she fled to a waiting getaway car being driven by 19-year-old Joshua Tseu, it is alleged.

An eye witness at the bank had taken down the getaway car's number plate and tipped off police.

When Anderson returned home from the schoolrun with her two daughters police were waiting for her.

Tseu was later arrested at his home with the alleged getaway car in his driveway.

Both have been charged with robbery and face up to ten years in jail.
Creep Of The Day* Vice Principal Arrested For Relationship With 13 Year Old Boy That Included An Allowance Reward SystemFor Everytime The Boy Masturbated
untitled46.bmp
The former Vice Principal of Pennbrook Middle School got way too friendly with one of his students, according to prosecutors.

Charles Hurst is accused of first encouraging the 13-year-old boy to masturbate and then setting up a reward system where Hurst would pay an extra dollar toward the victim's allowance each time the boy would tell or text Hurst that he'd masturbated.

Hurst met the boy at school and the two spent a lot of personal time together, according to Montgomery County prosecutors.

The two allegedly worked out together, went on distance runs and took trips to the mountains to ski. Hurst gave the boy an allowance and also helped him with his studies, investigators say.

Prosecutors say Hurst was very generous to the teen's family and routinely bought stuff for the victim.

The boy, now 14, told investigators that Hurst said masturbating would help him grow and make him smarter and happy, prosecutors say.

Text messages were found on the teen's phone that confirmed masturbation conversations between Hurst and the victim "as well as the inappropriateness of the relationship with him," according to a press release from the prosecutor's office.

Hurst no longer works for Pennbrook.

A statement on the school's website reads:

"The safety and emotional wellbeing of our students is of the utmost importance to the school district. Thus, the news that former employee Charles Hurst was charged with crimes involving a student is met with great concern. The district is working cooperatively with the Montgomery Township Police Department as they investigate the matter further."

Hurst was hired by the Lower Moreland school district as an assistant principal earlier this year.

He was scheduled for arraignment Friday on charges of endangering the welfare of a child, corruption of a minors and possession of cocaine.

sherricawilliams.jpgBringing your marital problems to church can sometimes be viewed as a good idea - unless of course you turn your SUV into a weapon.

Sherrica Williams, 26, decided that she had just about enough of her husband Virgil Lemons and ran him over, dragging the poor man into the parking lot of a nearby church on Sept. 13, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

28-year-old Lemons, who married Williams less than a year ago, was walking down the street in Deerfield Beach when he was hit from behind by his not-so-loving wife. Lemons stuck to the SUV's hood and Williams carried her husband a few feet before hitting the brakes, sending Lemons sprawling to the pavement.

Lemons, writhing on the ground in pain, began screaming.

So like any good wife, Williams hopped out of her Infiniti FX and covered his mouth with a T-shirt and told him, "Shut up!" witnesses said.

Williams was eventually arrested and charged with domestic violence, but her husband is apparently standing by the whole "Til death do us part" clause in his marital contract. Lemons told police he does not want to press charges.

Ah, the joys of marriage

British and Spanish police are investigating why 1.5 tonnes of cocaine, worth close to $1 billion, left Chaguaramas earlier this month aboard a yacht headed for Spain. The yacht was traced across the Atlantic Ocean by satellite after it left Trinidad until Spanish Police intercepted it on Monday. The drug haul showed similar signs to one of the biggest drug cases in Ireland two years ago, which also had strong links to T&T. The La Flibuste yacht, a UK-flagged vessel, was moored at Chaguaramas earlier this month before leaving with the cargo of 1.5 tonnes of cocaine hidden in a false roof of two of the cabins.

The cocaine is worth a staggering 83 million pounds sterling, which at todays exchange rate amounts to TT$830 million. As it left Chaguaramas it was traced by satellite and tailed by British intelligence Officers. On Monday, officers of the Special Operations Unit, of the Spanish National Police, raided the vessel some 120 miles of Cadiz, Portugal, and transported it to Spain. Three men, a Spaniard and two Frenchmen, are being questioned about from whom in T&T they collected the drugs and how they managed to make it out of the country undetected. Spanish police are saying further arrests may follow soon.

The operation, which was carried out with the co-operation of British police, began early this month when police became aware of the yacht moored in Port-of-Spain, according to a statement issued by the Spanish police. Spanish police say they were informed the yacht had cruised off Trinidad just under a month ago and was heading for a Spanish marina. It is not clear whether local law enforcement officers played any part in the tip-off. Intelligence agencies in Spain and England are probing deeper because of the similarity between this bust and one in 2008, in which the exact amount of cocaine was also found on a yacht that originated from Trinidad. That yacht, Dances with Waves, also was tracked from Trinidad across the Atlantic by a US spy satellite.

It developed engine trouble off the coast of Ireland before being intercepted. Three men who were arrested and tried in that matter were said to have travelled to T&T, via Spain and Venezuela, and bought the vessel In T&T. In 2002 a British court was told several politicians from Trinidad were said to have had a close alliance with a British millionaire-drug-pusher, who was at the time in hiding from British authorities. Those reports were carried in the local media, identifying a number of places in Chaguaramas, said to be responsible for the outfitting and loading of cocaine on vessels for overseas delivery. The court had heard cocaine was moving from Latin America, through Trinidad, to small seaports in southern England. A yacht, known as the Sea Mist, was interdicted in Ireland and 599 kilos of cocaine were discovered by Irish customs.

The captain of that vessel, John Ewart, who was subsequently sentenced to 17 years imprisonment for illicit drug-trafficking, reportedly told the international press the Sea Mist was outfitted and loaded in Chaguaramas. The court also heard that in conjunction with the Sea Mist a series of yachts left their Chaguaramas anchorages laden with cocaine and even heroin for England and ports in Europe. Two other vessels also were given similar treatment at Chaguaramas. They are the yacht The Aquarius, with 226.6 kilos of cocaine for delivery to Antigua in 1994, and The Obsession, with over 200 kilos of cocaine destined for Britain in 1996. Local intelligence authorities are said to be closely working with their international counterparts on Mondays bust.

It was a calm and humble Rodney 'Bounty Killer' Pryce who appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday to answer to the charge of unlawful wounding.

Bounty, who pleaded not guilty, was dressed in a white long sleeve shirt and a black pants. The dancehall artiste said nothing, except to answer to his plea and allowed his attorney, Christopher Townsend, to speak on his behalf.

The deejay was remanded after Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey refused an attempt by his attorney to secure bail for him. Townsend in his plea for bail said that his client is a victim and that there was some disparity in the medical report.

RM Pusey refused bail on the grounds that some nine months ago the accused appeared on a similar charge.

Allegations are that about 5 a.m. on September 17, the 19-year-old complainant called Bounty and they agreed to see each other. It is also alleged that when the complainant went to Bounty's apartment she saw him outside and he invited her inside. While inside she said a man who was there touched her on her chest, "I figured he was checking my heartbeat," she said.

It is alleged that the complainant went into Bounty's bedroom, where she could hear Bounty and the man conversing. Afterwards Bounty reportedly went into the room took off his shirt and jewellery and started beating her all over her body with the chain, causing bruises and swelling. The complainant said she ran to a washroom where she alleges the accused grabbed her by the neck and said, "like how you bleeding, ah better mi jus kill you an done because dat is a sign seh you should die."

The complainant who claimed she has known the artiste for three years, also alleged that while she tried to use a cellular phone to call her mother, Bounty approached her with a hammer that he used to beat her in her knees and head.

She also told the police that he used an electric insect swatter, that resembles a tennis racket, to beat her. She told the police that after the incident Bounty asked for a massage which she gave him and then they slept together.

The 19-year-old woman who said she is intimately involved with Bounty also alleges that he asked her to do some household chores which she did. He later hugged her, gave her US$100 and J$2,000. She said she left for home, changed her clothes and went to the doctor.

She reported the incident on Saturday at the Constant Spring Police Station. It is also alleged that while at the police station the complainant said, "I have been calling him for two days now, he should have answered and this would not have happened."

Bounty is to return to court on September 27 for trial.

A violent altercation between a father and son, allegedly over a tin of mackerel, has raised a number of eyebrows in the Fort George community in St Ann.

Both men had to seek medical attention on Sunday morning after the confrontation.

Information reaching THE STAR is that the two had to be rushed to the St Ann's Bay Hospital after the incident, which occurred about 7 a.m.

When THE STAR contacted the Claremont police, a corporal confirmed they are probing the incident, and asked: "Father and son a chop up each other over food. A so we gone bad? Mackerel?"

According to the corporal, the police were called to the community after crying relatives of the two men contacted them and described the *la*hdy situation.

Reports are that the father was at a grocery shop which he operates, when the son came in and took the canned fish from the shelf.

This supposedly angered the father and both men subsequently became involved in a heated argument.

This reportedly took an almost deadly twist when machetes were brought into play and both men were chopped.

They were then rushed to hospital where they were both admitted.

Checks by THE STAR last night found that the son was released, but the father was being kept in the hospital in serious condition.

One resident said the incident sent shockwaves through the community.

"Di man dem have people a run up and dung when dem a war, 'cause nobody neva waa get chop. Everybody a seh dem cyaa believe, 'cause dem neva know seh a so dem live," the resident said.

DJ-Naz-Pic-1_w370.jpg

HEINEKEN is sticking to its task of raising the standard of DJing in Jamaica. This through the Heineken Green Synergy Reality TV show which is aired on TVJ each Friday. The DJs in the show are tested on very important aspects of DJing which is often times overlooked by even top local DJs. They are tested from their knowledge of the different genres of music to their ability to execute proper mixing and transitions. Turntable skills, tricks, along with other integral information that a good DJ should know.

The inclusion of one of the best DJs in the world, Grand Master Flash, as the celebrity judge has elevated the show to a higher standard which can match any of its kind internationally.

Flash has been instrumental in providing invaluable lessons to the DJs in helping them to learn and understand the art of DJing. He has also served as a motivator in letting them see what it takes to be a top DJ and the heights that they can reach in their trade.

The input of local judges, Collin Hinds, Alric and Boyd, who collectively help in pointing out the DJs' flaws and how to improve on them, has helped them immensely as well.

The show also makes for an exciting watch, you don't know what's going to happen next or where it's going to take you. In the same way you don't know what challenges host Tami Chynn will throw on the DJs and how each one will cope with the respective challenge.

"We have seen the DJs rise to the occasion with our impromptu challenges and this is a good sign as Heineken is preparing DJs who can respond to the varying tastes of an international audience," Heineken's brand manager Keri-Ann McKenzie explained.

In the last episode, the DJs got a chance to meet and share with some of the top DJs in the business at a party at Fiction Lounge. The professional DJs present were Collin Hinds from FAME FM, Sanjay of Coppershot Disco, Miami-based DJ Richie D, Delano of Renaissance, Alric and Boyd. Smoke from Renaissance, Grand Master Flash and his protégé DJ Demo were also there.

Interestingly, DJ Ricky Eminence was brought back in the show by the request of Flash who was impressed by him after seeing his clippings and hearing him play on the night at Fiction.

The professional DJs showed their younger colleagues just how it is done when they rocked a jam-packed Fiction Lounge with some awesome selections and some dazzling turntable skills.

The 'challenge of the night' for the DJs was that they were each asked to play a similar set to the Pro DJs who played on the night.

DJ Naz got to play Boyd's set who played some 'old school' and latest Hip Hop, DJ 47 got Alric who played mainly Alternative music, DJ Banka chose Delano who played mainly retro Dancehall, DJ Jerry got Sanjay's set who played a mixture of genres and DJ Narity got Collin Hinds' set.

In the end it was DJ Naz who got the highest score as she did a very good job patterning Boyd. DJ Jerry got the lowest score on the night.

So it's back with the Heineken 6 Pack now compromising of DJ Naz, DJ Banka, DJ Jerry, DJ 47, DJ Narity, and the lucky DJ Eminence.

However, in the next episode, which heats up on TVJ this Friday at 9:30 pm, two DJs are set to be eliminated so you don't want to miss it.

A wanna be bank robber in Florissant, Missouri got much more than he bargained for when an old military veteran sprang into action and stopped his getaway.

37 year old, Thomas Bayse attempted to rob a Commerce Bank. He got out of the bank with the money, but was run down and tackled by 59 year old Doug Lesar.

That's when the clowning began.

While Lesar held Bayse down, onlookers started filming and cracking jokes.

"You should have been running fast man, you was running in slow motion," joked one bank customer. "You're trying to rob the bank like you're the Taliban or somebody, Taliban already got money."

Lesar, a 27 year military veteran held Bayse down for four minutes until police arrived.

During the interim, the jokes kept coming.

"Say please and he'll let you go," said a customer. "Please let me go!" the bank robber cried.

Katy Perry's breasts are the subject of controversy once more as parents are protesting against her segment on "Sesame Street". The singer is one of the guests in season 41, singing her tune "Hot N Cold" with Elmo while wearing a dress with transparent mesh and bright yellow bustier that clearly shows her cleavage.

The clip was previewed earlier this week on the show's YouTube channel. Immediately some disapproving people made comments such as "It would have been a great video, if she didn't look like a w***e", "You can practically see her t*ts. That's some wonderful children's programming" and "She shud concentrate on her singing and care less bout her chest lookin good for lil kids."

The clip is supposed to be aired on New Year's Eve but TMZ said the producers have decided not to air it following the protests.

Nevertheless, Perry's supporters have also posted some encouraging comments below the clip, saying kids won't even notice them "unless you made a big deal about it."

MIAMI On his upcoming album "Before the Dawn," Jamaican reggae star Buju Banton crows about standing strong, though battered and bruised, in the face of a gathering darkness.

The songs sound prophetic the four-time Grammy nominee recorded them before he was arrested on federal cocaine charges last December. The trial is scheduled to start Monday in Tampa a week before the album's U.S. release. He faces a possible life sentence if convicted.

"I've been accused, wrongly convicted. Jah knows I'm innocent," he sings in his gravelly voice, invoking the Rastafarian God. "I've been badly singled out by beloved friends ... who sold me out."

TAMPA, Florida The jury has broken their deliberations for lunch and the courtroom closed in the trial of Reggae singer Buju Banton. The jury will return for their deliberations at 1:00 pm or 12:00 pm Jamaican time.

On the 5th floor of the Gibbons US Court here in Tampa, Buju Banton's supporters prayed and held hands, while his longterm friend and fellow entertainer Wayne Wonder broke out singing the embattled artiste's popular hits of the nineties including 'Serious' and 'The Stone Love Anthem'.

"The tension is too thick," a supporter told the Observer.

Buju is being held in a holding area until the verdict is read.

If convicted, the artiste, real name Mark Myrie, could be sentenced to life imprisonment or slapped with millions of dollars in fines for the charges of conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine and illegal possession of a firearm in the furtherance of a crime.

He was arrested at his Tamarac, Florida home on December 10 last year, following the arrest of former co-accused Ian Thomas and James Mack, who had been in possession of the firearm for which Banton was jointly charged.

Thomas and Mack have since pleaded guilty and will be sentenced in November.

Lisa Hyper - File

Although Bounty Killer is currently in jail on wounding charges, female artiste Lisa Hyper says her new song 'No Beat Up' is not in reference to him.

"A nuh Killa mi a talk, a real ting mi a talk. It is just coincidental that Bounty commit such an act by the time the song supposed to come out," she said, noting that the demo for the song was done about three days ago.

"Certain things Lisa Hyper is finished with. That song definitely not going out to Bounty."

In the song, Lisa Hyper said, "No beat up mi nah tek no beat up/ Any day him lick mi a deh so mi erupt/ After mi a nuh punching bag fi him beat mi/ Is like yuh waan mi lef yuh and go find another man/ Then send yuh go Bellevue go mad/ Di Hennessy drinking yuh need fi quit it/ If mi deh wid yuh mi life ago sticky/ So mi stay single and party wid Nicky."

Bounty Killer was arrested and charged with wounding after a woman turned up at the Constant Spring Police Station and reported that the deejay used a hammer to abuse her over the weekend. It is reported that the woman had to be given 19 stitches and her body had marks associated with being beaten.

Only last April, he spent several weeks in police lock-ups after he was charged with beating his girlfriend and threatening her while he was at the police station. However, the matter was removed from the courts after the girlfriend said she did not wish to continue.

a different path

Despite the contents of the song, Lisa Hyper said she wants to take a different path, a change from the negative one she was previously on.

"People already know Lisa Hyper. Now we a move on to bigger and better things. We don't always want to paint a bad picture. You don't always want to give the people dem a bad impression. Even the baby fi can sing my song dem," she told THE STAR, noting that she is an 'artiste of the week' on Stampede Street Charts.

In the meantime, Lisa Hyper said she has been busy doing work with producers like Cashflow, Arrows Recording, Coppershot Disco, Truckback Records and Black Spade. She also has other recent releases like Night Nurse and It's Over.

Buju in good spirits

September 24, 2010

Jurors in the Buju Banton trial went back deliberating a verdict at 9:50 am Tampa time after Judge Jim Moody answered a query from them.

They wanted to know if a crime had taken place on December 10 when Ian Thomas and James Mac were arrested, in a sting operation.

Moody told them yes, that a crime had been comitted.

"Your job is to decide whether or not Mr Myrie was involved in that crime," Moody told the jurors.

Meanwhile, a supporter of Banton's who visited him in jail last night told the Observer minutes ago that the entertainer was in good spirits.

MONTERREY, Mexico Authorities say gunmen have killed the mayor of a northern Mexican town adding to a string of attacks on political figures in the drug-plagued region.

The Nuevo Leon state Attorney General's Office says Prisciliano Rodriguez Salinas was gunned down along with another employee of the town named Doctor Gonzalez, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) east of Monterrey.

Rival gangs have been battling to control drug routes through Nuevo Leon and neighboring border states.

Gunmen killed another Monterrey area mayor in August after. In June, gunmen killed the leading gubernatorial candidate in neighboring Tamaulipas state. A mayoral candidate was slain there in May. A mayor in San Luis Potosi state was killed this month.

Chinas co-operation with Jamaica transparent, says ambassador

CHINESE Ambassador of Jamaica Chen Jinghua says his country has no ulterior motives for pumping billions of dollars in Jamaica's economy.

The ambassador yesterday said that he had heard good and bad comments about China's intention, but maintained that solidarity and co-operation with developing countries formed the very basis of China's foreign policy.
DSC_6406_w370.jpg

The ambassador's comments came in the wake of the recent controversy surrounding the China-funded Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme (JDIP) road rehabilitation project, over which members of the Opposition People's National Party have accused the Government of being partisan in its selection of roads for repairs under the project.

"We are proud to say that China's co-operation with Jamaica is transparent and China pursues no hidden agenda," Jinghua told delegates at yesterday's opening of the China Harbour Engineering Conference at the Wyndham Hotel in Kingston.

The two-day event is being hosted by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), the company undertaking rehabilitation work on the Palisadoes road and shoreline.

Noting that neo-colonialism is never a tag to be put on China, the ambassador said, "We will never follow the old path of colonialism or imperialism since we have no such policy or desire, nor is it ever in our tradition or genes to do so."

He reiterated that his country has always offered sincere and friendly assistance to Jamaica and never attached any political conditionality to such assistance.

He explained that China agreed to arrange special preferential export buyer's credits to Jamaica to implement the Palisadoes and national road network projects.

The five-year JDIP programme is funded by a loan of $36 billion secured by the Road Maintenance Fund from the Export/Import Bank of China while the Palisadoes work is funded by $4.97 billion from the same entity.

"We have always given full respect to the sovereignty and development paths of Jamaica and never interfered in its internal affairs," the Chinese ambassador added.

In his address, Transport and Works Minister Mike Henry reiterated that Jamaicans will form the major part of the workforce for the projects.

He said that from the outset it was decided that local labour would get priority.

"Indeed one of the discussions that we had with China Harbour was to reduce the labour that would come with the project and the only labour they would bring is that which we really fail to have," Henry said

He explained further that the company will also use the grade one contractors in Jamaica, which include engineers.

Meanwhile, Henry said that CHEC will be working with the National Works Agency to establish a lab facility for testing of roads that will strengthen the local agency's knowledge.

"We hope that at the end of the exercise we will be offering that service to the world," he said.

Zhongdong Tang, general manager of CHEC Latin America, said the seminar comes at a most opportune time at the commencement of the JDIP and the landmark Palisadoes road work.

"The seminar is being staged to provide a forum whereby our Chinese engineers and the Jamaican engineers can exchange civil engineering knowledge and experience," he said.

The seminar, he added, is poised to cement a long-term professional relationship between CHEC's engineers and those at the ministry of transport and works and the National Works Agency.

He announced also that next year CHEC would be bringing experts from China to provide advanced training to local engineers.

THE police have linked yesterday's attacks on buses belonging to the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) to the controversial killing of taxi operator Leroy Berry by law enforcers on Wednesday night.

The law enforcers were forced to increase patrols in Barbican and surrounding communities in St Andrew up until late last night, after men from the area stoned several JUTC buses that ply the route.

BURNT-BUS-2_w370.jpg
According to corporate communications manager at the JUTC, Reginald Allen, the company received reports of four stoning incidents in St Andrew. In addition the company has launched an investigation as to how a fire started on a bus in downtown Kingston, yesterday afternoon. That unit burnt to a shell.
"We believe the attacks were carried out by men protesting the shooting death of Leroy Berry," head of the St Andrew Central Police Superintendent Derrick Knight told the Observer yesterday.

"We believe that two attacks in the St Andrew Central Police Division were carried out by men travelling around in a white vehicle," Superintendent Knight said.

Berry, 40, was shot dead under controversial circumstances on Dumbarton Avenue in Kingston. Alleged eyewitnesses said he was involved in an altercation with the police and officers of the Transport Authority. However, up until Observer press time last night the police had not provided details as to how Berry was killed, but said that the incident was being investigated by the Bureau of Special Investigations.

Berry has had a series of run-ins with law enforcers, among them a 2006 incident in which his wife Margaret was photographed being beaten by members of the Island Special Constabulary Force in Half-Way-Tree, St Andrew, after she jumped to his defence during an altercation with the police.

His death has left members of his family and his colleagues angry.

"The man was carrying home his wife and children and the police shoot him in front of him family," said Berry's brother who protested alongside several of Berry's colleagues outside the Transport Authority offices on Maxfield Avenue.

Meantime, the Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators has called on the Ministry of Transport and Works to intervene in the matter.

Leighton 'Livity' Coke, brother of Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, was yesterday denied bail when he appeared in the Gun Court.

The prosecution opposed bail on the grounds that things were now under control in west Kingston and fear was being expressed that, if Coke got bail, there could be an escalation of crime in the area.Supreme Court judge Paulette Williams turned down the bail application. Coke is to return to court on October 7 for case management conference.Coke is facing charges of shooting with intent and illegal possession of a firearm.

It is alleged that Livity fired shots at the police in May, during the unrest in west Kingston when his brother was being sought by the police in connection with a warrant for his extradition.

CRYSTAL HARRISON, STAR Writer

Barbecued, curried or jerked, crocodile meat is rapidly becoming a part of the diet for a number of Jamaicans, with some persons even claiming that it gives a 'lift', just like Viagra.

Residents of several communities have been illegally capturing the protected reptiles, cutting off their tails and making big meals out of them. So popular is the meat that one community now stages a weekly party, 'Croc Wednesdays', where the meat is consumed.

In one community in St Catherine, a chef who used to work in the hotel industry told THE STAR that the meat is very popular among he and his friends. He said he has prepared the meat for his friends, police officers, lawyers and doctors who all love it.

"You can barbecue it, curry it, put it in soup, jerk it or even soak it in red wine to change up the taste or you can put in black bean sauce," he said. "When you a curry it you just do it the same way like how you curry goat, you clean it off and season it up, burn di curry in the pot and add the meat and cook it for 20-25 minutes."

When he was asked to describe how the cooked meat looked he said that it resembles oxtail.

The chef, while not disclosing where he got the meat, told THE STAR that he prefers the crocodiles from the rural areas instead of Hellshire, St Catherine, where he says they are nasty because they live in the sewage water. He does not purchase the meat but he said he has heard rumours about Chinese buying the meat for as much as $15,000 for a tail.

To the chef though, the most outstanding quality of the meat is that; "It come in like Viagra because when me eat it, it mek me stand up."

THE STAR also spoke to a female resident from a Kingston address who also eats crocodile meat. "My brother prepare it for me already, it taste like chicken, he also wrap it in bacon and then he jerks it, it really taste good. Sometimes when him curry it, he serves it with roti, it really taste good," she said.

When contacted, two residents of Hartland, St Catherine, admitted to hearing about the crocodile consumption but said that they have never eaten the meat.

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) has said it is investigating the reports of the consumption of the crocodile.

no evidence

Acting manager at the Enforcement Branch at NEPA, Richard Nelson, said there have been several reports made about persons consuming the meat but there is no actual evidence.

Investigations done by NEPA, he said, have led them in the past to areas where they have seen the bodies of dead crocodiles floating around in the water tail-less. "Based on my understanding, it is the tail of the crocodile that is eaten, the cuts on the dead bodies of the crocodiles are clinical cuts, a sharp object is used to separate the tail from the rest of the body," he said.

"With the exception of Sheffield in Westmoreland, what we have are reports from general areas such as the Hartlands area in St Catherine, Whitehouse in West-moreland, Elim in St Elizabeth, and Free Town road all the way to Salt River in Clarendon," he further said.

Nelson said that NEPA has received reports that in the Sheffield area a weekly party called "Croc Wednesday" is held around 10 p.m. they have a special horn that they blow to signal that it is time to eat the crocodile meat.

He further stated that based on the information they have received about the "Croc Wednesday" party, the meat, which is prepared before the party begins, is mixed with other meats like chicken and mutton and as such it would be difficult to prove it is crocodile meat.

NEPA in the meantime is warning the public that it is illegal to catch or be seen with the reptiles or any of its parts. If caught, persons can be fined $100,000 or be sentenced to as much as 12 months in prison.

Mavado - File

Singjay Mavado will be trying his hand as a promoter at his 'Guinness Stulla Wednesdays' which kicks off at the New Quad tonight.

This will be the singjay's first time promoting a weekly event, having hosted events in his community of Cassava Piece as well as his birthday party at various venues.

When THE STAR spoke to Mavado's manager Julian Jones-Griffith he explained that Mavado had been thinking about having his own weekly event for sometime. He said, "we've been thinking of doing it but it was really the operators of the Quad that contacted us about it, so it's a partnership between us. We came up with the name and picked the selectors we wanted etc."

PR and Marketing Officer for the New Quad, IB Konteh, told THE STAR, "we wanted someone who's hot in the business now to do a series with and Mavado naturally came to mind. We pitched the idea and he loved it and Guinness loved it. The club scene has really been missing a dancehall night for years now. Cactus used to do it and so did Asylum but we wanted to bring back an authentic dancehall vibe that's fun and everybody can come to."

The name was chosen from Mavado's latest song Stulla on the 'Smokin' rhythm. In a release sent to THE STAR the singjay said, "It seemed like the perfect name for the weekly event. Because it's so fresh and full of energy."

everybody will be happy

He also added in the release, "It's the ideal place for everyone to come and party. It's a club that is central and everyone is familiar with and Stulla Wednesdays will be catering to everyone. We can party right through without disturbance. We have hand-picked the best selectors every week so everybody will be happy."

To kick off the event music will be from selectors such as Tony Matterhorn, Boom Boom and FAME FM's Arif 'Supa' Cooper. According to Jones-Griffith, fans can expect to see Mavado, as well as other 'Gully' members, partying at Stulla Wednesdays on a regular. However, he says it's open to everyone to come out and party saying, "you can expect to see a lot of people in the entertainment community there, not just Alliance related."

In the meantime Mavado has been busy in the studio working with Stephen 'Di Genius' McGregor among others and has some overseas collaborations with an American rapper called Vado - among others.

Facebook is down.

The social network, with its 550 million worldwide users, said it is "currently experiencing some site issues causing Facebook to be slow or unavailable for some users."

"We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible," according to a spokesperson.

Facebook has not seen many widespread outages in recent years.  There was a brief outage earlier this year, as well as some issues earlier this week.

The problems come at a somewhat inopportune time for the company, which is also dealing with the imminent release of "The Social Network," a movie that portrays founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg in a questionable (if fictionalized) light.

The Times wrote about the film and the company today.

Video: Stand Collapses At Brazil Drag Race

More than 111 people got injured at a drag race that took place last weekend in Brazil after one of the stands collapsed. The weight of the spectators proved to be to much for the poorly built stands to withstand. Fortunately, no life was lost in the accident. The race took place in Parana state, in Quatro Pontes on Sunday. Out of the 111 people that were injured, 22 are in critical condition.

This is always the case with these poorly organized races. If it's not one of the driver or support crew that gets it, it's the spectators who get injured.

CHURCH LEADERS FIGHT FOR OFFICE

September 22, 2010
Started By jubalson2 Comments

A dispute between an evangelist and a female pastor over who should occupy an office at a church in Clarendon, has led to a split in the congregation.

THE STAR has learnt that a new female pastor was recently appointed to lead the flock at the church. However, prior to the individual's arrival on September 5, an evangelist was asked to be in charge of the flock, due to the resignation of its male pastor some weeks before.

This appointment is said to have magnified an already existing problem.

Reports are that before coming to the Clarendon church, the female pastor had hosted a weekly fasting service in Manchester. It is understood that the evangelist used to attend the service but stopped doing so and instead conducted one of his own at his Clarendon church. The number of persons who attended the Manchester service is said to have reduced.

"Things took a turn for the worse when the female pastor was asked to be in charge of the flock at the Clarendon church, relieving the evangelist of assigned duties. This resulted in the evangelist having to vacate the pastor's office from which he usually operated," said a member.

The decision did not go down well with the evangelist, a few members of the church who sided with him and some persons whxo thought the office should be given to the new pastor.

Despite suggestions that the evangelist should leave the pastor's office and carry out his activities in another office, the evangelist and his supporters would have none of that.

"A meeting was called between the pastor and the evangelist to have the matter settled, but things got out of hand," another member said. It is reported that there were loud quarrels, which caught the attention of members of the community, who have since been crying shame on the group of Christians.

"The quarrelling of the church members was so bad, that at one point the situation almost turned into a fight between members of the groups," the source told THE STAR.

Efforts to get a comment from the persons involved in the conflict proved futile and most members that were approached refused to speak openly about the situation.

Vybz Kartel - File

Deejay Vybz Kartel is hunting new talent for his Portmore Empire in the form of a talent search, which will take place tonight at The Building in New Kingston.

The 'Gaza Talent Search' will take the place of the recently removed 'Fresh Fridays' in The Building.

Speaking to THE STAR recently, Kartel explained how the search came about. "The teacha has always been bussing artistes, but the idea for doing an official talent search came from my Street Vybz pawdie, Corey Todd (owner of the Building)."

In a release sent to THE STAR, Corey Todd added: "The search will start this Friday and continue every Friday until January. We will be searching for selectors, deejays, singjays and female dance groups."

According to Kartel, the finals will be held in December and the winners will be announced and signed by January. An application form, Kartel said, will be made available at The Building where persons can sign up.

"The judge will ultimately be the crowd. We will be monitoring and will have the final say, though."

What is Kartel looking for in his latest additions to the Portmore Empire? He said, "I'm looking for original sounds like me and Popcaan, just be original and fresh." Todd said the talent search is a real chance for an entertainer to buss in the business. The show will be hosted by Boasy Boy Floyd and excerpts of the show will be aired on Hype TV.

cash prize

Each winner will be signed to the Portmore Empire and receive a cash prize of $250,000

Known for breaking new acts such as Gaza Slim, Popcaan, Blak Ryno, Jah Vinci, Gaza Indu, Merital Family and Lisa Hype, Kartel said young members of the Empire are doing well.

He said: "Slim is going to England this weekend, Popcaan is going to Holland and France at the end of September and Shawn Storm is doing a Japan tour in October."

The sweetness of a woman is said to be the reason behind a recent clash between a constable in the Jamaica Constabulary Force and a sergeant of the Island Special Constabulary Force.

Reports are that the men clashed and the constable was headbutted, beaten, and had to seek medical attention after receiving injuries to his mouth and other parts of his body.

It is said that last Thursday, the constable, who is stationed at another division, came to his former division to attend the funeral of a colleague.

The senior policeman is said to have got information that the sergeant was also visiting the home of his child's mother at a Greater Portmore address in St Catherine.

THE STAR was told that when the sergeant reached the home he saw the constable there.

"He was caught at the home of the sergeant's babymother. The sergeant and the constable started to fight," a sergeant told THE STAR.

During the scuffle, the constable was headbutted, punched and beaten.

Checks at the Portmore Police Station revealed that the case is now up for mediation.

'One Day' rhythm reaps rewards

Its success was not planned and the production time was certainly short, but producer Seanizzle has been getting several hits off his 'One Day' rhythm which was released earlier this year.

The producer said he made the rhythm on April 22, and by April 25 it was ready for release.

"All of the songs were recorded in one day. My song on it was called One Day and the rhythm was made in one day. When mi look pon everything, mi seh this must be a sign, so mi just call it 'One Day'," he told THE STAR, saying recording started at 10 a.m. and finished 3:30 a.m. the following morning.

The songs on the rhythm - many of which are hits -include Seanizzle's One Day, Beenie Man's I'm Ok, Mr G's Swaggerific, ZJ Liquid's Wifey Walk Out, Khago's Nah Sell Out, Twin of Twins' Don't Tell Nobody and Future Fambo's I'm Drinking Rum, featuring Beenie Man. Afterwards, he produced Gary Snipes' Poor No More.

potential

Although it was not planned, Seanizzle said he believed the rhythm would have reaped some level of success.

"I felt it from I was building the rhythm. I just think it is my time where this is concerned. All of the songs, I felt it from my heart that they were hits," he said.

"It's a tremendous feeling. I've been doing this for a while now. This is just one of the rhythms I've been waiting on to take me to the level I want to be at."

He has followed up the 'One Day' with 'Split Personality' rhythm, which premiered over the weekend. The rhythm is jam-packed with 15 songs from artistes like Beenie Man, Pretty Kitty, Mavado, Serani, Seanizzle, Ryno, Mr G, Charly Black, Future Fambo, Lukie D, Baby Chris, Dreama, G-Whizz, Richie Stephens, ZJ Liquid, O-Octane, Zamunda and Tony Matterhorn.

"It look like the next banger. I think it's gonna be bigger than 'One Day'. The songs are really catchy and they have some unique stuff about it. It have a different kind of vibe and personality, so that's why it get the name," Seanizzle told THE STAR.
