In true dancehall fashion, Guinness started their 'Dancehall Christmas Edition' at Stulla Wednesdays at The New Quad in New Kingston on Wednesday night.
Guinness' 'Dancehall Christmas Edition' means that all upcoming Guinness-sponsored events will have a Christmas-based theme.
Guinness girls, looking wonderful in sexy black-and-brown Santa Claus outfits, were the centre of attention, as they made their entrance to the Oxygen Lounge, 'rewarding consumers' with goodies.
With Swatch International, Boom Boom and Bass Odyssey providing the musical juggling for the night, patrons enjoyed hours of partying.
When THE STAR arrived at minutes past twelve, the party was already off to an early start as the disc jocks created a good early vibe and patrons rocked to Sexy Love, No One, Damian Marley's Beautiful, and Barbee and Junior Kelly's Missing You.
There was also an early 'brukout' segment as ladies got wild to Water Man, Dandy Shandy and Dude.
When Boom Boom introduced Vybz Kartel's Real Badman, accompanied by his mike antics, he had the crowd waving hands in the air, but it was Mavado's Wah Dem A Do, that had fingers 'bussing' blanks.
There was then a change to a dancing vibe. The Craven 'A' girls took centre stage as they invaded the dancefloor and 'signalled the plane' and 'parachuted'. Most patrons were in a dancing fever and they showed it.
Patrons made trips to the bar to get Guinness bucket deals. Some even left the counters with up to three buckets containing their favourite stout.
Yet another school has been robbed as it now seems thieves have made it their duty to prey on these institutions around the island.
The latest break-in occurred at the Ascot Primary School in Portmore, St Catherine, which became the third school to be broken into in four days.
Police reports are that a group of masked men went on to the compound and tied up the watchman before gaining entry to a room by cutting through a steel grille. The culprits reportedly made off with a vault containing documents and cash.
took the vault
Principal Jean Fearon told THE WEEKEND STAR that the thieves also broke into her office and stole computer equipment. "They dug out a vault which was embedded in the floor and took it away, they went into my office and took two flat-screen monitors and some cash," she said.
Claude Hamilton, Chairman of the Ascot Primary School Board, said it is not the first time criminals have attack the school, as gunmen even held up and robbed a teacher of a motor vehicle on the school grounds. He said it was a tidy sum in the vault.
On Tuesday night, thieves reportedly broke into the Prospect High School in Portland, and also made off with computer and other equipment. The break-in will be a setback to students sitting external exams as their school-based assessments were being stored on the computers.
Meanwhile, the recent spate of robberies has led the Ministry of Education to express panic at the situation, saying those responsible for the acts are sabotaging the future of the nation's children.
Director of communications for ministry, Colin Blair, said this is something we cannot afford to let happen. "We have noticed an increasing trend where schools are being targeted by predators.
We're asking such persons to leave our schools alone. We cannot afford for the future of the country to be thwarted by these people. Schools are for the development of the country and our children," Blair told THE WEEKEND STAR yesterday.
Asked if there were any plans for combating the trend, Blair said there are certain security measures which are being looked at but it will take a while before they can be implemented. Consequently, Blair urged residents to help protect schools within their communities.

However, he is happy that no major damage was done and there were no fatalities.

He has been identified as Vincent Phipps, 49-year-old baker of a Corporate Area address.
Reports from the St Andrew Central police are that Phipps was taken into their custody on October 29 in connection with the death of Oneil Douglas.
Douglas' body was found in an industrial oven at a bakery in the Corporate Area. A police source told THE STAR that days after Phipps was taken into custody, he started to behave rather strangely.
"Him seh dat duppy box him down and him see a spirit in the cell and a woman and a baby was standing over him," the police source said.
The police source also commented that at first, "everybody thought a fool him was forming, until seemingly unexplainable things started happening to him. They however still moved him from his initial cell and kept him elsewhere.
THE STAR understands that following this Phipps lost the use of his legs and became unable to walk unassisted. He is said to have had to rely on persons to lift him and carry him to the bathroom as he said, "him couldn't bend him knees," the source pointed out.
psychiatric treatment
The police source said that Phipps was later taken for psychiatric treatment at the Bellevue hospital, however he showed no signs of mental illness.
"The psychiatrist said he could not see any problem with him," the source added. The accused man however died at the Kingston Public Hospital on Saturday after he was taken there.
Up to press time last night, checks by THE STAR to find out the cause of death were unsuccessful and the date of the autopsy was not yet known.
Phipps had surrendered himself to the police and confessed to killing Douglas only days after the body was found. That Rihanna reign just wont let up. The pop siren has lots to be thankful for this Thanksgiving after scoring her career best on the charts this week.

Five-time Grammy Award winning producer, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Stephen Marley along-side his brothers Damian Marley and Julian Marley are proud to announce the signing of reggae music singing sensation Christopher Ellis to the growing roster of musical talent featured on the Marley brothers record label imprint , Ghetto Youths International, Inc.
Christopher Lamour Ellis was born the youngest male progeny to The Godfather of Jamaican Rocksteady, the late Alton Ellis. Talented in his own right, the soulful 28 year-old roots reggae, r&b crooner has been astounding audiences with his incredibly natural, smooth vocal stylings since the age of 11.
In 2009, a mutual friend introduced Stephen Marley to Christopher Ellis in Jamaica. During that fateful meeting on Hope Road, Christopher sang A Capella for the iconic reggae producer.
Coincidentally, the very same day that Stephen Marley met with Christopher Ellis, Marley was also contacted by producer Baby G, son of the legendary producer King Jammy, who had a remix track by Alton Ellis that he wanted Stephen to hear. Stephen listened to the Alton Ellis remix and immediately invited Christopher Ellis to join him at King Jammys studio in Jamaica to sing on the track.
The session resulted in Marley recording Christopher Ellis first single entitled, End of Time, produced by Baby G. End of Time is a moving, soul-stirring track featuring beautiful vocal works by Christopher Ellis , Stephen Marley and Jah Cure, and is inspired by Alton Ellis rendition of You Made Me So Happy.
The magnificent opportunity of working with Stephen Marley and the Marley Family has continued in 2010 in Miami where Christopher Ellis has spent quality time working in the studio on material that is being helmed and produced by mega-producer.
I feel so incredibly Blessed to be working on my debut album with Stephen Marley for the Ghetto Youths Records family. comments Ellis.
To date, Stephen Marley has executive produced and recorded two singles for Ellis, including the aforementioned End of Time and a rendition of Alton Ellis song entitled, Willow Tree, a sweetly seductive lovers ballad that showcases Christopher Ellis versatile musicality. End of Time has an anticipated release, while a ballad version and a reggae version of Ellis Willow Tree is available now on iTunes. Later this year, a video launch accompanying Ellis Willow Tree single will mark Christopher Ellis international debut, including in the territories of London, Jamaica and the United States.
Stephen Marley has been the driving creative force behind Ghetto Youths International, Inc. and the music created by his brothers for the family owned label. Stephen's production, performance and writing credits have earned him more Grammy Awards than any other Marley family member or reggae artist in history.Blazing his own trail in the music world, combining reggae, hip-hop, and r&b styles to create his sound as a performer, songwriter, and producer, the accomplished Stephen Marley is known to take on more of the behind-the-scenes roll.
Stephen Marley comments, "I don't want to be just another artist, I want to make a statement, and I want to continue this musical legacy with my family. Just like my brothers, I aspire to be a reckoning force, when you hear my name, when you hear the Ghetto Youths name, you know the quality that comes with that: good music, good message, and good vibe."
Ghetto Youths International was founded by Ziggy Marley and Stephen Marley in 1989. In 2002, Stephen Marley, Damian Marley and Julian Marley went on to incorporate the family owned record label. Recent projects released by the premiere, reggae and hip-hop oriented imprint include the Grammy award winning and nominated albums by Damian Marley Welcome To Jamrock, Stephen Marleys Mind Control and Julian Marleys Awake.
A catalogue of reggae and hip-hop influenced artists signed to the Ghetto Youths record label include: Stephen Marley, Damian Jr. Gong Marley, Julian Marley, Mr. Cheeks, Illestr8, Christopher Ellis, Jonathon Malcolm, Javaughn, Black Am I , Daniel Bambaata, and Jo Mersa.
'Only Girl (In the World)," the first single from Rihanna's fifth album, 'Loud,' has skyrocketed the pop princess to new Billboard heights, making her the artist with the most No. 1 singles since 1992.
The song was released in September and gives Rihanna her seventh No. 1 appearance on Billboard's Mainstream Top 40 chart, breaking a new record in the Nielsen list's 18-year-history. This puts Ri-Ri ahead of number two contenders Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey and Beyonce, who each have six No. 1 singles under their belts.
Rihanna's previous number one hits include: 'S.O.S.' (May 2006), 'Disturbia' (July 2008) 'Live Your Life (feat. Rihanna)' (Dec 2008), 'Rude Boy' (May 2010) and 'Love the Way You Lie' (Aug 2010). Her most recent single, 'What's My Name?' featuring Drake, debuted on Billboard's Hot 100 chart two weeks ago. The two recently filmed the video for the song in New York City.
Deejay Vybz Kartel has a harsh rebuttal for anyone who challenges the idea that he has bought a S350 Mercedes Benz. He sent a bb message declaring,"before yu chuck inna yu madda, oonu need fi call Carland Investments and ask who buy the Benz? Ah that oonu need fi do!"
Dancehall star Munga Honourable recently returned to the island after completing a one month tour of the US. Munga, opened for 'the fireman' Capleton on the tour that saw him doing 26 performances in 15 states.
"It was just like it was back in the day when Capleton first brought me on the road with him. The tour feeling is amazing," Munga said.
The hectic tour had the artiste travelling for at least 12 to 13 hours each day in between performances. Munga performed in places like Albany, New York, Bentley House of Soul in Nashville, Tennessee, the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh, North Corolina and many more. Yet the 'Gangsta Ras', said his most memorable performance was at the West Indian Club in Hartford, Connecticut.
"I was amazed at the welcome I received from the crowed and when I started to perform, that took the energy in the club to new level," Munga said.
Munga's set included hits like Earthquake, Gangstas do Dem Own Ting, Nuh Flesh Weh Mi Fraid A, Rise My Own, Bad From Mi Born - which was one of the most well received tracks performed while on tour. He also performed, Wanted Man and Whine Pon It, as well as newly released tracks Private Dancer, Cologne, Space Fi Di Gal Dem and Clean and Fresh which he is set to do the video for.
He returned to the island on October 26 and since then has been heavily promoting his new music. Munga has also gone into production, starting his own label, Hilltop Records, which he currently has two artistes Mad Rhymez and Nazari Bastik.
In addition to his already hectic life, the deejay has been working with the Portmore Society, which has resulted in a a track called Girl Dem Check Fi Mi recorded on the Portmore Society's Hot Is riddim.
Being on tour this time around Munga found that since his introduction into the dancehall industry, he has garnered followers from all over and his fan base has grown considerably. With all things being equal, both Europe and Africa will be seeing the 'Gangsta Ras' quite soon as he is now finalising appearances to concretise a two-month tour.

In past years, a 'Warriors' category on a Sting concert would mean a clash was definitely in the making, but not at the 27th staging, which takes place at Jam World on December 26. This is even as Bounty Killer, Beenie Man and Vybz Kartel, which has proved a volatile mix in the past, are part of the crew of 13, which also include Etana, Khago and I-Octane.
This year's edition was launched at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel, New Kingston, on Tuesday night in the glitter and lights of pepped-up dancehall style, with eight 'healthy body' young women in black shorts outfits leading the dancing to the recorded music with Sting embracing a new main partner, telecommunications company LIME.
DiMario McDowell of Sting promoters Supreme Promotions described LIME's involvement as "a breath of fresh air", noting that since Guinness pulled out two years ago, Sting has not had a major sponsor. "It happened because we have similar values in terms of our numbers, our customer base," McDowell said.
The variety and sheer number of performers at Sting 27 is underscored by the categories into which they have been placed. The 13 'Bag Girls' include the 'Bad Gyal' Ce'Cile, Lisa Hyper, D'Angel, Ikaya, Face, Pamputae and Tifa. Twin of Twins, Food Kartel, Tanto Blacks and Apache and Sarge have been charged with providing a combination of laughter and insight as the 'Sting Commentators'. Sunshine, Bambino and Liquid are designated 'Sting Disc Jocks', with Nesbeth, Zamunda, Cush Hunta, Sean Storm, Popcaan and Charlie Blacks are among those in the 'Spotlight' segment.
'starlight' segment
In addition, there will be a 'Starlight' segment and a surprise performer is set to hit the stage at 11:45 p.m.
LIME sponsorship manager Stephen Miller emphasised that persons who do not make it to the Portmore, St Catherine, venue on Boxing Day will still be able to follow the action live via LIME Mobile TV. This means, he said, that "everybody who has a LIME TV phone will have the excitement of the greatest one-night reggae show on earth in the palm of their hand".
Portmore Mayor Keith Hinds said that "Sting is always good for Portmore, because it helps the local economy", that including the vendors. However, Hinds said "what I request of Sting and the artistes is that they keep the peace in the city. We are not about to tear up the place. Music is what gets people together".
"We support Sting as a company. We welcome back Sting each year because Portmore is the home of Sting," Hinds said.
There will be another launch on Friday, December 3, when the full line-up will be revealed on the Sting poster, which is always a highlight of the event.
Moving away from the war theme that they are known for at Christmas, Cash Money Sound will be doing a clean, mixed CD.
Speaking with THE STAR recently, Scratchy B from Cash Money Sound said they will be releasing a CD called Cash Money Christmas Party Clean Mix on December 1.
"Inna di Christmas time we usually build war mix, but we decide fi do a clean one with a party vibe so it can play everywhere," Scratch B said.
"From the year start this a di first clean mix wi a build. We in the streets and the people dem a seh wi need fi drop a clean mix."
The CD will have artistes like Mavado, Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel, Aidonia, Tornado, Sizzla, Capleton, Chan Dizzy, Harry Toddler, Elephant Man, Chase Cross, and Gramma. It will also have the artistes Cash Money Sound is working with like Black Queen, Scorpion, Plan and Lele Ranking. Listeners will get a taste of their rhythm, which is also called 'Cash Money'.
From this new release, Scratchy B says he is expecting good reception.
"We are expecting a big response," he said, noting that it will be available on Cash Money Sound's Facebook page and at various locations in the Corporate Area. "A mix like this will go far and serve longer."
There goes another punch line.
The Department of Homeland Security is planning to get rid of the color-coded terrorism alert system. Known officially as the Homeland Security Advisory System, the five-color scheme was introduced by the Bush administration in March 2002.
Red, the highest level, meant severe risk of terrorist attacks. The lowest level, green, meant low risk of terrorist attacks. Between those were blue (guarded risk), yellow (significant) and orange (high).
The nation has generally lived in the yellow and orange range. The threat level has never been green, or even blue.
In an interview on The Daily Show last year, the homeland security chief, Janet Napolitano, said the department was revisiting the whole issue of color codes and schemes as to whether, you know, these things really communicate anything to the American people any more.
The answer, apparently, is no.
The color-coded threat levels were doomed to fail because they dont tell people what they can do they just make people afraid, said Bruce Schneier, an author on security issues. He said the system was a relic of our panic after 9/11 that never served any security purpose.
The Homeland Security Department said the colors would be replaced with a new system recommendations are still under review that should provide more clarity and guidance. The change was first reported by The Associated Press.
The goal is to replace a system that communicates nothing, the agency said, with a partnership approach with law enforcement, the private sector and the American public that provides specific, actionable information based on the latest intelligence.
The department has already begun working toward the goal of providing more specific alerts.
After a Nigerian citizen, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was accused of trying to bring down a Detroit-bound plane last Christmas with explosives, the department issued new guidelines to airports and airlines without raising the threat level.
While the system may have had limited usefulness for the American people, it proved to be comedy gold for late-night shows.
Conan OBrien joked, Champagne-fuchsia means were being attacked by Martha Stewart. Jay Leno said, They added a plaid in case we were ever attacked by Scotland.
Meanwhile, critics of the Bush administration argued that the system was a political tool.
And even Tom Ridge, the secretary of homeland security under President George W. Bush, has raised questions. In his memoir, The Test of Our Times: America Under Siege ... And How We Can Be Safe Again, Mr. Ridge said Attorney General John Ashcroft and Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld, pushed for an elevated terrorism level in October 2004 after a threatening tape from Osama bin Laden was revealed.
Mr. Ridge wrote that after a vigorous, some might say dramatic, debate, I wondered, Is this about security, or politics? While the security level ultimately was not raised, he said the incident helped him decide that it was time to leave the government in February 2005.
Amy Wax, president of the International Association of Color Consultants North America, said perhaps not surprisingly colors could be an effective part of a warning system if tied to specific action. How are we going to take those instructions and apply it to our lives? she said. Are we going to go to the airport, or not go to the airport?
She said the agencys use of childish primary colors like red, yellow and blue might have diluted the impact. Purple, orange and magenta might create a sense of something that would get attention, she said.-credit goes to the n.y times.
Finance Minister Chris Sinckler on Monday unveiled a series of new tax measures as the Barbados government warned citizens to brace themselves for 'serious adjustments' in its expenditure for the next 12 months.
"From our analysis 2011 is likely to be the year in which real GDP is expected to grow and our intention is to provide critical assistance to ensuring that this goal is achieved," said Sinckler.
Sinckler, delivering the first national budget of the Freundel Stuart administration, announced an increase in the Value Added Tax (VAT), the removal of tax-free allowances for public sector workers, as well as an increase gasoline taxes, bus fares and passport and immigration services among other revenue measures.
He said the taxes were necessary to deal with a fiscal deficit of 8.4 per cent and that from December 1 this year, VAT would increase by 2.5 per cent to 17. 5 per cent.
"This increase in the VAT is intended as a temporary measure for the next 18 months. I further propose to review this at the end of one year with a view to providing relief subject to progress in reducing the fiscal deficit," he told legislators.
The new measures will raise an additional BDS$124 million (US$62 million) in revenue.
Sinckler said that the government would eliminate the tax free allowances for travelling and entertainment granted to employees resulting in a saving of BDS$25 million (US$12.5 million).
The excise tax on gasoline will be increased by 50 per cent with effect from December 1, resulting in BDS$22.7 million (US$11.35 million) in revenue to the government.
Nobody puts Baby in the corner - not Sarah Palin's kid or a ruptured disc.
Despite landing in the hospital after injuring her back earlier that morning, Jennifer Grey and Derek Houghwon season 11 of "Dancing with the Stars" on Tuesday night.
"Pain you forget, but this I will remember for the rest of my life," she told ABC's Eyewitness News after the show.
Controversial finalist Bristol Palin and partner Mark Ballas were eliminated first after earning the lowest scores of the night while Disney star Kyle Massey and pro Lacey Schwimmer took second place.
"Congrats Jen,Kyle,Bristol,et al, for proving competition is GOOD!" Sarah Palin Tweeted after the show. "Remember: 'They're going to criticize anyway, so you might as well dance!'"
"Winning this would be a big middle finger to all the people out there that hate my mom and hate me," she said on Tuesday, only days after receiving threatening mail.
It turned out the viewers had another outcome in mind as host Tom Bergeron announced the show had received its highest number of votes ever Monday night, crashing ABC's website.
But ABC was ready for its close-up with a finale packed with memorable moments, many of them involving this season's eliminees.
David Hasselhoff returned in a red jacket with buoy in tow to perform a parody of "Baywatch." The pop star (at least in Germany) sang some some off-key verses from the show's theme song, "I'm Always Here," while throwing in some impressive dance moves with three bathing beauties.
A second skit involved the Situation becoming New Jersey governor in 2030. "Governor Sorrentino" went on a rant about his success before finally ripping off his shirt for one final dance.
Christina Aguilera also returned to the stage two days after performing at the AMAs to sing a number from "Burlesque," which had her wiggling in one spot as her back-up dancers performed impressive stunts. She later returned to perform an equally sedate version of "Beautiful" in a cloud of smoke.
Sports stars and former contestants Kurt Warner and Rick Fox performed a testosterone-filled dance-off while Margaret Cho and Florence Henderson laughed it up together.
Even Brandy and Maksim Chmerkovskiy came back after being controversially voted off in the semi-finals to perform their famous quickstep to the "Friends" theme song.
"Tonight was such a beautiful night! So much love in the DWTS building!!" Brandy tweeted after the show. "Congrats to all the finalist and thank you to all the fans."
The only two 2010 "DWTS" alumni who did not return were Audrina Patridge, who appeared to be under the weather, and Michael Bolton, who was performing in London.
"In bed sick watching dwts really bummed I couldn't be there :(" Patridge tweeted. "i was looking forward to performing one last time with @Tonydovolani and hanging out with everyone."
But there wasn't much hanging out going on. The finalists had two dances to complete before the final votes were tallied a repeat of their favorite dance and an insta-dance.
Bristol and Mark dusted off their head-banging tango to earn 25 out of 30 from the judges. Jennifer and Derek brought out their very first dance, the Viennese waltz, and earned their final perfect score of the season. And Kyle and Lacey resurrected the dance that turned things around for them, the tango, and were given a 26 out of 30.
For the insta-dance, everyone found out at the last minute that they had to dance the Cha Chan to Pink's "Raise Your Glass." While Jennifer and Kyle tied for the top spot, Bristol earned one point less before joining her peers in a bow.
Then, after a painful build-up toward opening the envelope, Bergeron announced that the winners of the night were...Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough!
The 50-year-old actress screamed and her partner hugged her so hard that the host worried he would further injure her back. She then confessed that she hadn't thought she would be able to compete that night and didn't "dare to want" to win.
"Can barely type, but MUST thank @officialdhough, my amazing husband and daughter and every single person who voted for us on DWTS," Grey later tweeted. "Yay!"
For her part, Palin, whose mother appeared to be a no-show for the first time in weeks, said that, for better or worse, "DWTS" was "a life-changing experience."

Eva Longoria and Tony Parker's divorce looks like it's going to keep getting uglier. First, there were rumors of infidelity involving Parker, then Longoria appeared to blindside her soon-to-be-ex-husband by filing divorce papers in Los Angeles last Wednesday.
Then, Parker hit back by initiating his own surprise divorce proceedings in his native Texas. TMZ reported that the Friday (November 19) filing was a surprise to Longoria and her lawyers and that the "Desperate Housewives" star was "very upset" when she found out about it.
As for the reason for the divorce, Parker's petition reportedly states, "The marriage has become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities between Petitioner and Respondent that destroys the legitimate ends of the marriage relationships and prevents any reasonable expectation of reconciliation."
Citing unnamed sources, the gossip site reported that both sides wanted to enforce the prenup they signed before their lavish 2007 wedding. When Longoria's lawyer filed her divorce papers, the box that reserved her right to collect spousal support was checked, violating the terms of the prenup.
Fearing that Longoria's actions left open the chance that she would challenge the prenup, Parker's lawyers took preemptive action to protect his client in Texas by counter-filing. The move was made because it could be easier for Parker to enforce the prenup in Texas than in California. The site noted that Parker's divorce papers did not mention the prenup, but instead said that he believed Longoria "will enter into an agreement for the division of their estate."
After earlier denying that she and basketball player Parker, 28, were headed for divorce, Longoria, 35, filed papers on Wednesday citing "irreconcilable differences" and seeking spousal support from the San Antonio Spurs star.
TMZ reported that calm had been restored by Sunday and that there was no more drama over the dueling petitions, but as of press time there were still two divorce filings in two different states, so one of the stars is going to have to blink.
When this flasher woke up this morning, snapped a condom on his dong, threw on a messenger bag and headed into the subway to delight one special lady with the fruit of his loins, he probably wasn't expecting this. HollabackNYC has a video (SFW on mute) of the woman every woman wants to be when confronted by a flasher, calling him out and screaming, "Oh, you're getting f****** arrested. I'm not leaving your side."You almost feel sorry for the flasher, who seems so flabbergasted at the whole thing he can't even form a defense. Almost.

A very sombre Prime Minister says our worst fears have been confirmed with the death of the 29 Pike River miners.
John Key has described it as a national tragedy, for the men's families, their workmates and friends, their communities and our nation. He says where this morning we held on to hope, we must now make way for sorrow.
"To lose this many brothers at once strikes an agonising blow. Today all New Zealanders grieve for these men - we are a nation in mourning".
Mr Key also acknowledged Australia, Britain and South African, who have all lost men in the tragedy.
The Prime Minister will travel to Greymouth tomorrow to offer his condolences to the families of the miners. He will also express his thanks to the rescue crews.
Parliament will rise early as a mark of respect and flags will fly at half mast.
Twenty-nine have now been claimed by the Pike River Coal mine disaster, after a second explosion at the West Coast mine near Greymouth today.
The youngest was a West Coast teenager on his first day underground and the oldest was 62, who commuted to work from his home in Southland.
Most of the 29 were Coasters but there were also two Scotsmen, a South African and two Australians.
Fourteen had lived in Greymouth -- population 9400, six in Runanga and three played for the Blaketown Rugby Football Club.
Those claimed by the tragedy:
- Conrad John Adams, 43, of Greymouth.
- Malcolm Campbell, 25, a Scotsman living in Greymouth, was to marry his New Zealand fiancee on December 18. He had been working in Australian gold mines for two years before moving here.
- Glen Peter Cruse, 35, Cobden.
- Allan John Dixon, 59, of Runanga. Father of two children.

Kanye West takes the wraps off the cover for his fifth album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, in stores November 22. Banned in the USA!!! They tried to play me fam! They dont want me chilling on the couch with my phoenix! tweeted Yeezy before posting the controversial artwork illustrated by artist George Condo.
While retailers may oppose the cover, Kanye is putting his artistic integrity first. In all honesty I really dont be thinking about Wal-Mart when I make my music or album covers #Kanyeshrug! he said. I wanna sell albums but not at the expense of my true creativity.
Kanye is putting the finishing touches on the long-awaited project. Last day to wrap the album Im feeling so blessed on this day finishing my 5th studio album in 6 years! Lining up piano sample replays, he wrote. Adding the voice samples from the VMA performance to the album version of Runaway also the whole song is 8 minutes long.
What do you think of Kanyes banned cover?
Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot of back story behind this video of an armless guy named "Michael" firing off rounds of a 1911 .45 ACP handgun with his feet. The video's a little old, but there's no way I could resist posting it. Plus, the dude's a total boss: "If they want to come screw with the U.S., come on. We're all waiting." Makes me feel all, "America, f*** yeah!" inside. Hell, he even reloads with his toes! Amazing. Just enjoy it for what it is, because it's probably the most badass things you'll see all weekend.
"Where my ring? Knew you had it cause you took too long as Micky, Annie and the girl who bought it looked on. Huffing and puffing, gun in my hand told you to step outside. Hoping you said no, but you hurt my pride. Made our way down the steps, maybe you thought it was just a threat. Or maybe your life was just that crazy and you was begging for death. Tried to justify this in my young mind, but the adrenaline and my ego hurt combined drove me berserk. Saw the devil in your eyes, high off more than weed, confused, I just closed my young eyes and squeezed. What a sound, opened my eyes just in time to see you stumbling to the ground. Damn, what I done now?" Jay-Z "You Must Love Me"
I remember the the first time I heard Jay-Z's song "You Must Love Me." A joint that describes several incidents he was involved in as a youth, that he later came to regret. Acts Such as selling crack to his own mother, using a young girl as a mule to carry cocaine (she gets popped by the police), and shooting his own brother.
I often wondered if any of it was true or just typical rap boasting from Hov, trying to add "realness" to the song.
In an interview with the UK Guardian, Jay-Z admits at least one of the scenarios is %100 fact. At the age of 12, he shot his crack addicted older brother over a stolen ring.
"I thought my life was over. I thought I'd go to jail for ever." Hov said "It was terrible. I was a boy, a child. I was terrified."
Luckily the bullet hit his brother in the shoulder and wasn't a life threatening wound. When Hov visited him in the hospital, his brother apologized for stealing the ring and didn't press charges against him.
In the interview Jay goes on to describe how prevalent guns were at that time in his neighborhood ofBrooklyn, New York. A problem that has only gotten worse in every hood across America.
"Guns were everywhere. You didn't have to go far to get one. Just everywhere," he said. "Guns were around every day. There were shootouts, but I never shot anyone else. Most people in shootouts don't get shot."
Jigga claims he was shot at three times, but never hit. "It's like there was some rogue angel watching over us," he said.
Lindsay Lohanwas just sentenced to90 days in jailfor violating her probation in her DUI case, followed by a 90-day inpatient rehab program.
Judge Marsha Revelsentenced LiLo after an incredulous prosecutor, Danette Meyers, told the judge that Lohan has been thumbing her nose at the court.
The evidence was loud and clear today -- Lindsay violated probation by failing to attend her alcohol ed classes based on the schedule set by the judge. There were lots of excuses, but ultimately they didn't fly.
Michael L. Brea, an aspiring actor who had a small part in the former hit ABC series 'Ugly Betty,' has been arrested after he allegedly stabbed his mother with a three-foot sword after a fight early Tuesday in their apartment in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, according to online media outlets.
The 31-year-old actor is alleged to have killed his mother while screaming Bible passages, reports the Associated Press, citing police officials.
Son kills mother with sword
Officers, responding to a call of a family rampage loud enough to be heard by alarmed neighbors, found the victim, identified as 55-year-old Yannick Brea, dead in her Prospect Heights home that she shared with her son and his twin brother, Marcel, who was not home during the attack.
When cops got inside the home, they found Brea kneeling with fatal lacerations to her head in a *la*hd-spattered bathroom, the police said.
Brea had cuts to her head and was pronounced dead at the scene, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told the AP.
Neighbors on the first and third floors of the Brooklyn apartment told reporters they could hear screams outside and inside the building at about 1:30 a.m. They also claim cops refused to enter her apartment for about an hour despite their pleas.
Arrested
Officers then arrested Michael in a nearby bedroom on charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon. They found him with a 3-foot sword believed to be the weapon used to kill Brea, Kelly said.
"In a bedroom was her son ... with a 3-foot sword," Kelly said. Michael was taken to Kings County Hospital for a psychiatric exam.
Cops not acted promptly
Neighbors on the first and third floors of the Brooklyn apartment told reporters they could hear screams at about 1:30 a.m.
They also claim cops refused to enter her apartment for about an hour despite their pleas.
"I could hear her groaning inside ... She was still alive, but they wouldn't go in," Clinton Clare, 52, who lived in the apartment below the Brea family, told the Daily News of New York.
"I heard this wild screaming," Gregory Clare, 25, whos father owns the building. He said he heard screams of "'Repent, repent, sinner, sinner,' over and over again," and "'You never accepted Jesus.'"
Neighbors estimated police waited an hour before bursting into the apartment
"I heard a 'Help me!' shriek," said Vernal Bent, 18, who also lived in the apartment above. "Police kept knocking on the door. Knocking and knocking ... All of us kept saying, 'Open the door.'"
"They just kept saying protocol this and protocol that," Clare added. "Now a woman's dead who should be alive if only the police would have listened."
But NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly said that the patrol cops handled the situation properly.
"It was a barricaded situation," Kelly said. "When there is a barricade situation the responding patrol officers if possible wait for Emergency Service officers. They're trained psychological technicians; they have additional equipment that enable them to better protect themselves because you don't know the type of weapon... They take prudent precautions I believe that was prudent at that time."
About Michael and his past
Michael has no prior arrests, and no previous domestic violence incidents had been reported at the home, police said.
In addition to the now-canceled ABC sitcom 'Ugly Betty,' the Haitian-American actor appeared as a dancer in 'Step Up 3D,' a film that was released in August, and starred in a campaign for the energy drink Full Throttle.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Michaels profile on a Haitian entertainment website says that he opened a Subway sandwich shop on Broadway in Brooklyn in 2007. He also wrote there that he gave away free turkey sandwiches in 2008 on Thanksgiving.
"I remember growing up and my mother was always feeding people who were less fortunate," WSJ quoted him as writing. "My parents raised me to always share and to give charity in the name of God!"

On "Stillmatic" Nas calls each person out from the Roc and also former friend Cormega. Cormega had beef with Nas and Nature after being booted out of The Firm for Nas's cousin (Nature). Cormega has F***ed Nature up in person, but that was over 2 years ago. The beef was squashed and all seemed straight between the long time friends, right? But the album adresses his 'main' beef, with Jay Z, more than any other.
Altough Jay-Z did reply on mixtapes, such as "Got myself a Gun", which is a very brave reply to such a diss track as "Ether" is, and always will be, he never really retaliated in such a way that could take the shine of Nas' "Ether", and the beef was soon after squashed with no violence involved.

Jay Z Vs Mobb Deep This is just another weaker contender trying to snatch the crown from 'Hova'. This time its those grimy cats from the QB, Mobb Deep. Again, as respect in the game as they come. While their beef wasnt as legendary as say Nas and JayZ it did spark some truly great moments, including Jay-Zs unveiling of a childhood photo of Mobbs 'Prodigy' in a tutu at the NTC Summer Jam.
Here's the low down on this beef, at the time Nas was dropping hint bars at Memphis Bleek. Jay-Z was quiet during this, while his main front man Beanie Sigel was going to war verbally with Mobb Deep. Everybody was getting in their little freestyles on mixtapes, dropping hints at who they're beefing with but it seems the main event is yet to start. After what happened at SummerJam (a big concert held by a radio station in NY), the beef wars have crossed the line. If you didn't know, Jay-Z performed at SummerJam and disgraced Prodigy of Mobb Deep by showing pictures on big screen projectors of Prodigy at age 11 wearing a Michael Jackson studded jacket with leotards, and another one with P in a pink Tutu. Some may say "so what, he was eleven" or "people weren't born thugs" but most cats know that he was highly disrespected. You don't dig into someone's personal life, bring out some embar****ing ass photos at a concert being seen by thousands, and expect everything to be all good in the spirit of battling. Many people might question P's image of being thorough, and stop copping anything he makes, hence that man can't eat. It's ok to battle, but people take pride and money seriously. Queens and Roc-A-Fella have been beefing back and forth, but that stunt crossed the line.
JAY-Z VS DIPLOMATS
The Diplomats latest attack on Hov comes over the instrumental for Kanyes latest single Runaway, which he debuted on the VMAs this past Sunday. In the freestyle Camron spits, And Kanye, you a sucka n-/ Dissed Dame, so my attitude is F*** the n-/ Stuck to Jigga, how you gon live with that?/ Took the beat, now come get it back.
Will this beef ever go away? Probably not. The Dip Set crew have been baiting Jiggaman for a battle since the mid-aughts, largely to no avail barring Jays Kingdom Come LP but well get to that. Despite the looming hatchet, Cam and Jimmy actually have quite a bit of history with Jay. Check out the troublesome trios timeline to learn just how well they know one another.
1995: Both Jay-Z and Camron appear on Big Ls Lifestylez Ov Da Poor and Dangerous LP, albeit on different songs (Jay on Da Graveyard and Cam on 8 iz Enuff, respectively).
1996: Jay-Z forms Roc-A-Fella Records with partners Damon Dash and Kareem Biggs Burke, both of whom Jim and Cam reportedly grew up with in Harlem.
1997: Camron signs to Sony/Epic through Lance Un Riveras Undeas Entertainment. Another artist signed to Undeas, Charli Baltimore, is in a short-lived supergroup with Jay-Z and the late Notorious B.I.G. called The Commission.
1999: Jay-Z reportedly stabs Lance Un Rivera in a nightclub over charges that hes bootlegging Jays fourth LP, In My Lifetime Vol. 3. Jay maintained his innocence early on but later plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge.
2000: Camron releases his second LP S.D.E. which features a cameo from Destinys Child (read: Beyoncé) on the song Do It Again. It also includes the song Let Me Know, which includes numerous subliminal shots (you rap about money, man, who are you anyway? and When the f we start bouncin?) at Jay-Z.
2001: Camron demands a release from Sony/Epic and is courted by his childhood friend Damon Dash. He signs with Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam later that year and brings his Diplomats crew and boutique record label with him.
2002: Come Home With Me, the third album from Camron. Buoyed by the Just Blaze-produced single Oh Boy, the album goes platinum. Jay-Z joins Cam on Welcome To New York City, a street single from the LP that cements their partnership.
2002: While Jay-Z is away on vacation, Jim Jones announces that Camron has been made a Vice President at Roc-A-Fella. Jay doesnt agree with the move and friction between the two begins to surface.
2003: In the midst of the Jay-Z/Nas feud, Nas disses Camron on New Yorks Power105. Camron subsequently joins the beef against Nas and releases Show You How, a freestyle dis to the instrumental of the original Jay-Z song.
2004: Jay-Z, Dame and Biggs sell their 50% interest in Roc-A-Fella to Def Jam. Jay-Z is made President of Def Jam and thus takes control of the label. Dame and Biggs create the Dame Dash Music Group. Camron and Dip Set side with their childhood homies.
2006: Camron releases You Got To Love It, a dis track aimed at Jay-Z, alleging that Hov blocked him from taking the VP job at Roc-A-Fella. He also claims that a gunman who shot him in Washington, DC one year earlier in a botched carjacking threw up the ROCs diamond hand signal. He also says Jay stole Kanye West, Roc-A-Fella Records and the Roc-A-Wear clothing brand from Dame Dash. Jay-Z doesnt respond.
2006: After ignoring Dip Sets taunts, Jay finally replies publicly on his LP Kingdom Come. N-s are like why dont you get at old boy/Why kill the puppet it leaves Gapeto alive/Why not wait to catch them all together this way you dig one big hole one time, Hov rhymes on Dig A Hole. Its like the disciples dissing Jesus becoming his rivals the one thing that they owe they life to, he continues.
2007: Tru Life, an artist signed to Roc-A-Fella subsidiary Roc-La-Familia, takes up for his label boss and begins trading insults on mixtape cuts with Dip Set. He winds up punching Camron in the face outside of New Yorks club Stereo.
2007: as Jay-Z preps his American Gangster concept LP, Jim Jones releases a mixtape of the same name, with a bevy of disses aimed at Jay. Jay replies with Brooklyn High, a freestyle over Jones We Fly High, claiming, Thats balling? Men lie, women lie, numbers dont.
2008: In a joint interview with Complex Magazine, Jones and Damon Dash say Kanye doesnt really like Jay-Z. They also indicate that their problems with Hov date back to 2001, when Jay-Z allegedly bought the Kanye West-produced track H To The Izzo after hearing him play it in a studio session for Cam.
2008: Ron Browz and the Jim Jones/Juelz Santana-featured remix to the single Pop Champagne climbs the charts. The autotuned track becomes the lead single for Jones 2009 LP, Pray IV Reign.
2009: Jay-Z releases Death of Autotune, putting the kibosh on Jones success. The single sets up his Blueprint 3 album, where on the very first cut What We Talkin Bout, he puts the beef to bed saying I aint talkin bout Jimmy, I aint talkin bout Dame.
2010: Jim Jones and Camron release their Toast Freestyle over Kanyes Runaway and the beat goes on. Source:http://rapfix.mtv.com/2010/09/18/jay-z-camron-beef-runaway-remix/
A woman suffering cholera symptoms is pushed
in a wheelbarrow to St. Catherine hospital in
Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Haitis cholera epidemic has
killed at least 1,000 people and hospitalized thousands.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Haiti yesterday counted down towards weekend elections as the death toll from a spiralling cholera epidemic neared 1,350, fueling debate over delaying the key polls in the quake-hit nation.
Haitian radio reported that demonstrators in the southern town of Miragoane had erected barricades to protest against the presence of electoral registration supervisors they accuse of being fraudulent government lackeys.
Health officials said at least 1,344 people had died from the worsening cholera epidemic that has ravaged the country since mid-October a rise of 94 from a day earlier. More than 57,000 cases have now been confirmed.
The past week has seen anti-UN riots spring up in several provinces. UN peacekeepers from Nepal are accused of bringing cholera into the country the epidemic erupted near their base in the central Artibonite River valley.
Amid fears the disease could spread more quickly in an election environment when people have to move and congregate, four of the 19 presidential candidates published a letter this weekend demanding the polls be put on hold.
"We are calling on the authorities to push back the date of the elections, to establish and publish a battle plan against the cholera epidemic that is threatening the life of all Haitians," wrote Josette Bijou, Gerard Blot, Garaudy Laguerre and Wilson Jeudy, all outsiders in the poll.
Jacques-Edouard Alexis, a leading candidate and former prime minister, insisted the crucial elections must go ahead as planned.
In spite of cholera, in spite of the fact that hundreds of thousands of people live in tent cities since the January earthquake that flattened Port-au-Prince and claimed 250,000 lives, the poll must go ahead, Alexis told a press conference.
His argument centred on the fact that President Rene Preval, who has been widely criticised for his response to the cholera epidemic, must leave office as scheduled on February 7.
"That's why it's necessary to hold the elections, and people should go out and vote," he said. Haitians must "not allow this election to end in contested results. We will not accept a candidate that is an understudy of Preval."
Another leading contender, businessman Charles Henri Baker, told AFP he also opposed a delay and relayed his frustration with how the authorities have handled the outbreak.
"Cholera will be here for 10 years," Baker said. "The sooner we change the government, the sooner we can take action against the epidemic."
Nearly 4.7 million Haitians are eligible to vote in Sunday's elections, which will see 11 senators and 99 deputies chosen.
The Conference of Haitian Bishops urged the electorate on Sunday not to participate in violence and to "choose leaders who will work for all the people."
Stone-throwing youths last Thursday raced through the rubble-strewn streets and fetid camps of the capital, as UN peacekeepers in armoured trucks fired tear gas on the crowds in running clashes that lasted several hours.
Sporadic gunfire echoed through the capital as demonstrators blocked roads with burning tires and dumpsters overflowing with rotting garbage.
Port-au-Prince had been seen as particularly at risk of widespread infection because of the crowded and unsanitary conditions endured by those living in the squalid, makeshift tent cities.
But less than 80 deaths have been recorded so far in the capital and the humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders (MSF), which has taken a lead role in treating the disease there, says the situation in the city is stabilising.
Prime Minister Bruce Golding says it is the economy and not the budget, which has to provide the opportunities and the resources for poverty to be reduced and contained.
The Prime Minister was speaking this morning (November 23) at the joint launch of the 20thAnniversary Edition of the Human Development Report 2010 and the 2008/2009 Jamaica Survey of Living Conditions.
The survey is the result of a partnership involving the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), and the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN).
Mr. Golding says the results of the Survey of Living Conditions for 2008 and 2009 are disappointing but not surprising as they reflect a reversal of the progress made for the preceding years in reducing the level of poverty.
He says one of the areas of concern is that much of the improvement recorded from 2000 to 2007 is derived from social intervention initiatives, such as PATH and the school feeding programmes.
The expenditure for PATH increased by 75 % in the last 2 years and the school feeding programme by 130 % for the same period.
The beneficiaries of these programmes are the most vulnerable in the society.
However, Mr. Golding says he is still not satisfied that the resources are being utilised to achieve their maximum outcome.
He wants the programmes revisited to see whether the beneficiaries can be empowered so that they do not need to be on the programme.
The Prime Minister has expressed the hope that the data provided by the reports will be used to inform decisions effectively to ensure that the country can stay on the right path.
Meanwhile, in his remarks, Director General of the PIOJ, Dr. Gladstone Hutchinson, said the body of work is extremely vital to Jamaicas growth and development and in realising the objectives of Vision 2030.
