Spectrum 2K7, a roller coaster ride

For the massive crowd that turned out for Spectrum 2K7, held at the University of the West Indies (Mona) Students' Union, last Friday evening, there were many high points, but the event was not without a few disappointing moments.

The vibes really got on the way around 1 a.m when host for the night, Spragga Benz, was introduced. When the veteran deejay stepped up on stage, UWI erupted with screams and cheers as Spragga performed a few hits of old, declaring, Wi Nuh Like and If A Gun Ting.

Other Red Square artistes, like Greg Hinds, also joined in on the action, and they delivered a few rounds of lyrical artillery before making way for Chino.

Chino managed to maintain the attention of patrons even though his partner Delly Ranx was not present to assist in performing their hit single Red Bull And Guinness. Chino then invited Sultex 3000 who taught 'The Killa Walk An Di Prezi Bounce' and another artiste from their camp, Kari Jess.

After a few more young acts attempted to win favour with the crowd, it was Ras Myrhdak who grabbed another big forward with his Blazer.

The 'hotta fire' was kept ablaze by the likes of Teflon and Turbulence who took the stage to deafening screams from the audience, while Einstein came to Rise Di Machine and Etana finding favour with the Wrong Address.

A break in the live stage performances made way for selectors and DJ Sunshine was a hit with a few boos and at least one bottle tossed her way when patrons felt that she had been playing too much Beenie Man tunes.

"Which py a boo mi in yah, which by hole a boo mi in yah?"

After a missile was thrown a her, DJ Sunshine exited the stage and even after host Spragga managed to restore calm, DJ Sunshine refused to continue, commenting, "dem disrespect mi".

No wuk

After the likes of Swatch International continued the musical vibes, live performances restarted with Alaine, who took the stage at 2:30 a.m. singing You Make Me Weak. After delivering a medley of her recent hit songs, Vegas took over, doing a mix of old and new tunes, among them Taxi Fare and Hot Wuk, to which he attempted to dance with a man's girlfriend in the audience.

At 3 a.m., it was time for the prime acts such as Sizzla Kalonji, who blazed the stage, performing a mixture of old and new. Sizzla, clearly in the mood to Pump Up Ar, declared, I'm With The Girls, so they should Come Fly With Me. And after he rounded off the girl segment with Haffi Get Di Nookie, he immediately went for his Big Long Guns.

Deejay Aidonia was up next at 3:20 a.m., but his Bagga Bagga Bagga and thoughts of Ukku were cut short when missiles were thrown at him, apparently because members in the audience disagreed with some of his lyrics about a certain other artiste. Aidonia left the stage abruptly, triggering a minor disruption in the audience, a few persons having to take cover behind the stage.

The selectors were called out to try and restore some calm in the meantime by playing some music, but it was not until the Warlord, Bounty Killer, was called out at 3:40 a.m., that the undivided attention of patrons was recaptured.

Bounty immediately got down to the musical business at hand, as he went 'ole skool' with Mystery is Di Mystery, Cellular Phone, War, Suspense, Eagle An Di Hawk and Cyan Believe Mi Eye.

Mavado later joined Killa on stage, adding to the hype with songs like Full Clip, Real MaCoy, How High among other tunes, before the two spat tunes simultaneously. Bounty saying, From Dem Dis, Mavado declaring, Ball Dem A Ball.

The two thrilled patrons for as long as was allowed, as the police came and declared that all good things must now come to an end.

Bounty was, of course, cross, angry and miserable at the interference of the police, as he left the stage cursing, "Police always a try disrespect di ting."

Again, another disruption took place in the audience, many rushing towards the exit, leaving Spragga over the microphone shouting, "uno do'n run, uno do'n run".

At 4:15, the ups and downs of Spectrum 2K7 and its roller coaster ground to a halt.

Mavado answers drug charges

Popular deejay Mavado, whose real name is David Brooks, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday to answer to a charge of possession of ganja.

The allegations against him are that on January 18 at about 10:30 p.m., a police party, acting on information, proceeded on foot to the Cassava Piece community. The accused was reportedly seen throwing away an object and was accosted and searched. The area was searched and nine transparent parcels of marijuana were found.

The court could not ascertain the weight of the contraband and the arresting officer was not present. His sentencing was therefore put off until February 2. RM Pusey ordered that his fingerprints be taken and his bail was extended.
Oprah Winfrey was shattered when a relative revealed in 1990 that she'd had a baby at 14, she says in the new issue of her magazine.

The February issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, has the theme, "My first" and Winfrey writes about her first betrayal: A family member's revelation to the National Enquirer that Winfrey gave birth as a teen to a baby who died in the hospital weeks later.

Winfrey writes that the relative, whom she doesn't name but whom the Associated Press identifies as her half-sister, Patricia Lloyd, "sat in a room, told them the story of my hidden shame and left their offices $19,000 richer."

When she found out, Winfrey writes, according to the New York Post, "I took to my bed and cried for three days. I felt devastated. Wounded. Betrayed. How could this person do this to me?"

Before the article came out, she says, "Only my family and closest friends knew. I would tell no one until I felt safe enough to share my dark past: the years I was sexually abused, from age 10 to 14, my resulting promiscuity as a teenager, and finally, at 14, my becoming pregnant."

She worried that if anyone found out about the pregnancy, it would damage her career: "I imagined that every person on the street was going to point their finger at me and scream, 'Pregnant at 14, you wicked girl ... expelled!' "

But in fact, she says, "No one said a word ... not strangers, not even people I knew. I was shocked. Nobody treated me differently. For 20 years, I had been expecting a reaction that never came.

"And I soon realized that having the secret out was liberating. ... What I learned for sure was that holding the shame was the greatest burden of all."

Jenna Jameson is not a virgin.

Neither, for that matter, is Paris Hilton.

But that isnt stopping either promiscuous blonde from offering her services to bedroom first-timers anyway.

As celebrity sex tape experts, Hilton and Jameson have been contacted about participating in a reality show currently in production called Virgin Territory, in which a group of the uninitiated will find their way to the promised land.

The man behind it? Actually not David Hans Schmidt.

Instead, the show will be brought to TV by the purveyor of Paris sex tape, Kevin Blatt, who predicts that even more people will watch Territory than One Night in Paris, Hiltons infamous night-visioned romp.

To help stock this televised cry for help, Blatt will be unveiling giant billboards in Times Square and Los Angeles; yes, hell solicit actual, live virgins in those cities.

Finding virgins in NYC or Los Angeles is no easy task, says Blatt.

Ricardo Palmer, otherwise called 'Tristan' who is before the court for the murder of dancer, Bogle is to face the court yet again. This time it's for shooting with intent at the police on Saturday.

Palmer a studio engineer from Campden Crescent, Maverly, Kingston 20 was arrested after an incident that resulted in one man being killed and the Bureau of Special Investigations launching an investigation.

Dead is Jamar Johnson otherwise called 'Bin Laden', of a Maverly address.

The police have increased their activities in Maverly since the shooting as they seek the other gunmen who are involved in the incident. The police are seeking a man known as Rex for questioning in connection with the incident. Anyone with information is being encouraged to contact DSP Michael Phipps, head of crime for St. Andrew South police division at 779-6189 or Detective Inspector Hunt at 990-8851. "Any information given will be treated with the strictest confidence," Phipps said.

Police reports are that Johnson and some other gunmen had been involved in shoot-out with another gang in the community when the police were called.

At 6:10 p.m., police went to Palmer's home at 15 Campden Crescent where the shoot-out was taking place. When the police approached the house, the gunmen turned their fire on them. The police fired back and after it was discovered that Johnson had been shot.

A 9 mm Ruger pistol serial # 70BSC2695 with two rounds was taken from Johnson. He was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators subsequently took Palmer and Omar Walton otherwise called 'Lazy' of Reapers Road in Maverly into custody. Both were subsequently charged with shooting with intent.

Both are being held by police and are to appear in court later this week. Palmer was on bail for the murder of popular dancer, Gerald Levy, popularly known as Bogle.

Palmer was arrested by police on September 15, 2005 for the dancer's murder which occurred in January, 2005 at a service station on Constant Spring Road. Another man who was shot in that incident died at hospital.

After investigations, police arrested Palmer and charged him with two counts of murder, three counts of shooting with intent and illegal possession of firearm.

In the meantime, DSP Phipps said Johnson was wanted for several crimes in Maverly area and was on bail for another charged when this incident occurred.

Johnson was in the gun court for charges of shooting with intent arising from an incident which occurred October 11, 2005. He was granted bail in that incident but instead absconded. He said residents were happy that he was dead as he often terrorised them.

A warrant has been issued for The Game's arrest, forcing his to postpone his upcoming tour of Canada.

The warrant was issued on January 16 after the rapper - real name Jayceon Taylor - failed to appear in court in New Year for a hearing relating to his November arrest for impersonating a police officer.

The Game's spokesperson says the hip hop star will turn himself into authorities and reschedule the tour dates.

The Game has threatened to "kick David Beckham's ass," following the football superstar's multi-million dollar transfer to the American soccer league.

The hip-hop icon originates from Los Angeles, where Beckham will play for the L.A. Galaxy from August when he completes his move from the Real Madrid team in Spain.

However, Game (real name Jayceon Taylor) has dismissed the former England captain's football skills, describing him as being only "pretty good."

He has also issued an interesting challenge to Beckham, which appears to have no basis in the traditional laws or parameters of European football as we know it.

He explains: "I'd kick David Beckham's ass on any given day. I'd just pick the ball up and kick the sh*t out of the stadium--game over."

Da'Ville continues to be a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment business. The singer who copped the coveted Stone Love award title for Singer of the Year (2006) continues to give creditable performances into the New Year.

On January 6, Da'Ville swept fans off their feet when he performed at Charlie's Place in Nassau, Bahamas. From the artiste took the stage, it was total euphoria as the females screamed and shouted as his infectiously soothing voice echoed through the microphone.

Da'Ville took them away with songs such as 'In Heaven', 'Hey Baby', 'Just A Little Girl', 'This Time I Promise', 'Can't Get Over You', 'My Grade', 'Gallis' and 'On My Mind' among others. During his performance of 'This Time I Promise' and 'Crazy', Da'Ville handed out red roses to the ladies.

The men in the audience weren't left out of the niceness of the night as they were treated to a mind stirring dancing session from a Jamaican dancer who was visiting Nassau. She demonstrated how the 'Hot Wuk' and 'Dutty Wine'

dances were done, as the men cheered her on.

Fans departed Charlie's fully satisfied and will forever have Da'Ville on their minds.

Jay-Z has just taken another shot at Dipset via a song on Tru Life's new mixtape, "Tru York."

The cover features Tru at the center with Jim Jones wearing a neon green thong at his left and Cam'ron sporting a blond wig, red lipstick and a colorful dress on the right. Hov appears on the tape's intro, presenting Tru over triumphant horns.

"If you're ****ing tired of your favorite rapper lying to you, allow me to introduce you to Tru Life," Hov says in the intro. "For instance. If somebody tell you that Hov got hit with a bottle...somebody lying to him or he's lying to ya'll. If a nigga tell you 100 thousand the first week is a success and in the very same breath act like 700 thousand in seven days is a brick... if ya'll tired of living like that ****, allow me to introduce you, Tru Life."

The intro ends with Jigga throwing a few subminal jabs in. Though he abstains from naming his targets, his references are clearly aimed at the Dips.

"A lot of rappers be yapping to us/Cause when we see them it don't be nothing/no knife and scrappin no buckin," Jay offers.

Tru Life's "Tru York" hosted by J-Love is out now.

The German collecting society GEMA has obtained from the District Court in Cologne temporary injunctions against the operator of the data exchange services www.rapidshare.de and www.rapidshare.com. The latter is said to have used copyright protected works of GEMA members in an unlawful fashion. The services make virtual storage space available into which users can upload content that is thereby made publicly available to other users. GEMA spokesman Hans-Herwig Geyer told heise online that the services should not be allowed to continue to operate in their present form. The collecting society is now demanding that the operator provide details on how many copyright protected works of GEMA members are currently stored on the said sites.

According to GEMA, the service www.rapidshare.de in particular has at times boasted of making some 15 million files available to its users. The operator had however failed to obtain from GEMA a license for making copyright protected files available, the collecting society spokesman observed. To date RapidShare had claimed not to have any knowledge of the content uploaded by the users and of not being in a position to control the same, the spokesman continued. Through its injunctions the District Court in Cologne had now however made it clear to the company that the fact that it was the users and not the operator of the services that uploaded the content onto the sites did not, from a legal point of view, lessen the operators liability for copyright infringements that occurred within the context of the services, the spokesman added.

Harald Heker, the chairman of the executive board of GEMA, believes the court's decisions will have repercussions on the way "Web 2.0 services" such as YouTube and MySpace will be treated in future. What the decisions according to Mr. Heker show is that "the mere circumstance of shifting acts of use to users and the purported inability of the operator to control content do not relieve the operator of a service from the copyright liability he/she/it possesses for the content made available for download from the operator's website(s)." ELEPHANT MAN PORN?

Has Elephant Man become the next R. Kelly? This isnt a celebrity video sex scandal of the proportions of R. Kelly, Parish Hilton, Rob Lowe and Pamela Anderson, but it is juicy enough to be burning up internet chat rooms and telephone lines all over the Corporate Area.

We here at One876Entertainment.com are in possession of a photograph, which our in-house experts say is authentic of the deejay Elephant Man in a compromising position with a female who is on her knees. The deejay is also pictured nibbling on the girls right buttock. The deejays recently acquired style of wearing a tape around his pinky fingerof his left hand is also clearly visible. Is the Energy God just being naughty? Who took the picture? And why would he allow himself to be photographed in such a sexually suggestive position? Or is this just a crafty computer-generated photo incriminating an innocent star?'

Efforts to contact Ele and his manager for comment has proven futile.
Celebrity jeweler Jacob "The Jeweler" Arabov is lining up a star-studded list of defense witnesses who may testify during his upcoming trial for federal money laundering.

Documents submitted to a judge in Detroit revealed that rappers like Jay-Z, Sean "Diddy" Combs and singer Mariah Carey are some of the witnesses Arabov will call to the stand to testify about his good character and his business scruples.

Arabov was arrested in June of 2006 and charged with helping the Black Mafia Family (BMF) crew of drug dealers launder over $270 million in drug proceeds.

Authorities claim Arabov also failed to file the proper tax forms in a scheme to hide the source of BMF's drug money.

He was released on $100,000 bail and has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.

Arabov's attorney Benjamin Brafman said that he hopes the money-laundering charge will be dismissed before his client ever takes the stand.

If the charge stands, he will seek to move the trial from Detroit to Arabov's home of New York.

"Trying to coordinate flying them into Detroit is a logistical nightmare that is beyond comprehension," Brafman told The New York Post.

Brafman denied that Arabov was in on the money laundering scheme in court papers.

"As far as he knew, BMF Entertainment, as well as its owners and its artists, were up-and-coming in hip-hop," Brafman wrote to the judge.

BMF was founded by brothers Terry and Demetrius "Meech" Flenory in the mid 1980's.

In October 2005, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) arrested over 30 members BMF and seized over $3 million in money, assets, 2 ½ kilograms of cocaine and weapons.

Prior to the October raids, DEA officers had seized almost 650 kilograms of cocaine and $11 million in money and assets.

Video models are what some men's dreams are made of. They have the ample bosoms, abundant buttocks and flat stomachs that make men go 'oooh' and tempt a jealous girlfriend to smack them upside the head.

Still the lifestyle is not all it's cracked up to be.

Some American video models get on average US$2,000 for a lead role (depending on whether it is a high budget video or not) and are often catapulted to stardom.

Jamaican video models, however, earn on average $12, 000 for a lead role and between $5,000 and $6, 000 for the role of an extra and then suddenly disappear from the scene. 'Hey, that's easy money for making my cheeks clap,' some may say, but there's an unwanted flipside.

Gracie-Ann Watson is a chestnut-skinned sister, with what men describe as a 'Coco Cola' shape and has been in more than 15 videos. The downside to this, she says, is that people often get the 'wrong' idea about her.

She spoke of appearing in I-Wayne's video, Can't Satisfy Her, where she played a prostitute.

More exposed

"With (that) video, people need to know that Gracie is actually different from the character; people need to know that it was just a character that I was portraying. Even when I was in Royal Palm playing 'Patience', people don't realise that I am Gracie-Ann. People are misled and are like, 'dance for me like when you dance on the show'," she said.

Tamara Murray is also a video model and if you've seen enough videos, you would probably recognise her derriere without a face shot.

She dismisses the view that local video girls are 'too sexy' and may lead impressionable minds astray.

"I don't think so. That doesn't happen only in Jamaica; overseas they have music videos and it's the same thing. All them pretty girls shaking them rump and sometimes much more exposed than we are. Young people know that it's just fun and nothing more, so people shouldn't be criticising us," she said.

Tamara also says she enjoys being a video model and always maintains a professional working relationship on set.

"It has been a nice experience. You get to know a lot of people, but when you are there you have to have your head on your body. You have to know that you are not there to flirt, it is all about working and after that just to get your money and leave," she said.

She says she has limits and says she would never get naked in a video.

Still, she says she has her eyes set on becoming an actress and an entrepreneur.

"I want to own my own business like a clothing store or something. I'm a certified nail technician, but in the future I would like to become an actress. I travel a lot, so that is probably in the making." Tamara is also the lead Magnum calendar girl for 2007, which is a far way from where she started as a model for Hardcopy magazine.

Gracie-Ann too has started to hit the stage more frequently, saying she is leaving video modelling: "Acting was always my number one dream ... I only decided to take it on full time after I left Edna Manley in 2005. Right now, I'm not really interested in appearing in anymore videos." She is currently doing live stage acting at Centrestage theatre.

'Addi di Teacha' was taught a lesson in trickery on Sunday, when friends in Waterford, Portmore, lured the deejay into a surprise party in celebration of his 32nd birthday.

"I was invited to tek in a football competition in the area, but when mi reach mi see di entire Waterford inna one place ... it was as if they planned it from last year, everything was there," Kartel said.

Held at the intersection of Knot Patrick road and Huntley close (beneath the large Kartel poster in Waterford), the event was planned in the space of hours by close friends of Kartel, whose real name is Adijah Palmer.

The brainchild of the event, Rhona 'Muma Zeng' Whittingham, who operates the Penni's Place entertainment venue, says the event was intended to be a small gathering to surprise their beloved deejay, but bloomed into a massive 'dance type' event.

"Mi cater for jus a few people an is few people mi tell, but a leak spring somewhere, an nex ting mi know a bear people a pour in ... everything did deh, it did crazy, sell off," said Muma Zeng.

The script was later flipped for Kartel, as instead of him 'deejaying' to the masses, it was the crowd's turn to croon a poor attempt of the 'birthday song' to the artiste. Despite the not-so-melodious attempt, Kartel says it was a great beginning to a night of unbridled joy.

"It did sweet, mi love di cake, di hundreds a people, di liquor ... mi still a recover from las night," said a weary sounding Kartel on Monday.

Attractions at the simple yet 'fun-filled' surprise party included high-end liquor (such as Hennessey, Moet and Alize), and a bellyfull of food (such as conch soup, steam and roast fish and chicken). The cake was a grand double layer, pink and white delicacy, with the words, 'Happy Birthday Vybz Kartel,' on the top, and 'from Blazer' on the side.

TOO DRUNK TO DRIVE?

Although Kartel declined to confirm it, sources at the party said he was too intoxicated to drive home and had to be carried home by friends when the party came to a close, at about 4:00 a.m.

"(laughs) Mi did a drink crazy liquor, mi all too drunk fi cut mi cake ... everything was there, everyone was there, I felt at home, like real, real home," said the deejay.

The event was planned by the Fashion crew, and Border Line. Although entertainers Bascom-X and Gyptian were in attendance, Kartel says this was an event for him and his community.

"It was just me and my community, no artiste ting. As I said, it was more than a pleasant surprise ... Waterford mi love unu," said Kartel.

Whitney and Ray J an item

Whitney Houston has been on a date with a singer almost half her age. The 43-year-old star was seen leaving Beverly Hills restaurant Maestro on Sunday night (14.01.07) with Ray J, the younger brother of singer Brandy, who turns 25 today. A source told gossip website X17online: "They looked like they'd had an enjoyable evening, but they weren't happy to be pictured together. "Ray helped Whitney into his car and drove her home." Whitney filed for divorce from bad boy husband Bobby Brown in September last year. Whitney, 43, and Bobby, 39, tied the knot in the grounds of her five-acre, US$11 million mansion in New Jersey on July 18, 1992. The split came just months after it was alleged Whitney, who has a 13-year-old daughter, Bobbi Kristina, with Bobby, was addicted to crack cocaine and living in squalor.

American author Napoleon Hill once said that, "The world has the habit of making room for the man whose actions show that he knows where he is going" so even though Wayne Mitchell faced initial rejection from music producers and was told point blank "yuh no ready yet", his drive, persistence and tenaciousness ensured that the world heard him sing. With a large fan base here at home and an even wider fan base in the United States and Japan, one would never believe that Wayne 'Wayne Marshall' Mitchell's talent was ever in question.

In 2006 alone, the man who delivered 'Astronaut' on the Dem Time Deh Riddim, 'Forgot Them', 'Marry Juana', 'Make them Come' and 'Happy Days' has been featured on multiple stage shows including Fully Loaded, Saddle to the East, Solid Agency's School Tour, Campfire, Sting, Tempo anniversary show in St. Croix and countless stage performances in Japan, US, UK, Canada and the rest of the Caribbean.

Marshall's abounding self-confidence allows him to freely acknowledge his skill, and he recognised his own talent for lyrical construction as soon as he started penning soulful lyrics at 14. "From I was 7 years old I always dreamed of performing in front of huge crowds of people," smiles Marshall.

Marshall is definitely going places and cemented himself as one of Jamaica's respected song writers and crooners. He has recently shot a video for the single "Forgive Them Please", a video directed by prodigy Ras Kassa. The video sees Marshall depicting as a religious effigy asking the Father above to forgive those that go against his will. The video is currently being rotated on the local entertainment stations as well as MTV TEMPO. Besides "Forgive Them Please" Marshall is also enjoying rotation from "Polly-Tics" on the March Out Riddim a clever pun on Jamaican politics and the popular "****y" on the Untouchable Riddim.

His greatest achievement to date has not been the money, the fame, the exotic places he gets to visit or the recognition but in fact is his likeness Giovanni; a life-changing event, a catalyst that has transformed his career and his life. His devotion to his son caused him to be selected as the spokesperson for the National Family Planning Board (NFPB). Marshall has come on board with the NFPB's new campaign, which will focus on safe sex, and family planning, targeting various age groups. Add that to his Western Union and Cable and Wireless endorsements and Marshall's career and credibility is obviously booming.

"I don't want people to guess if Marshall was a good artiste... I want to be recognized as an established artiste, a bonafide hitmaker," says a smiling Marshall. Operating out of Solid Agency in Kingston, Marshall is determined to achieve more things in 2007 starting with Rebel Salute this weekend. Marshall has definitely sang his way into the hearts of many fans.

Houston, one of the most celebrated pop artistes of the 1980s and 1990s, was ordered to unload the items by the New Jersey Superior Court.

Due to ongoing legal action, the amount raised by the auction will not be released, said Steve Newmark, co-owner of A.J. Willner Auctions, which handled the sale.

Undergarments

More than 400 lots were put up for sale, including pianos, keyboards, organs, drums, designer hats, shoes and outfits from well-known names like Giorgio Armani, Jean Paul Gaultier, Pamela Dennis, Gianni Versace and Dolce & Gabbana.

Among the more intriguing items were 'Whitney's Throne' chair, a designer Lucite ****tail stand, a church pew and some of Houston's undergarments.

"One of the things I kept hearing on TV and on the radio was that people want to buy her personal items such as bras and underwear and stuff like that," said fan Jon Recor, who travelled from Montreal, Canada, for the auction.

"God only knows what they would do with them. But if I do happen to win them, what I would love to do is send them back to her because, really, the rightful owner should have them back."

Houston's publicist, Nancy Seltzer, was unavailable for comment on Tuesday, but said last week that the singer was auctioning off old tour equipment that was no longer in use and that part of the proceeds would pay the storage debt.

A Guardian Angel to Alliance. That is how singer Wayne Marshall describes himself, as he feels he was called to fullfil a specific purpose in music.

"Is a conscious effort, but it's natural to me. That's how I entered the business, mi bring positive messages fi uplift people and yuh still have a career. That's what I get my talent for, to inspire. Yuh can do good tunes and still get respect for it as well," Marshall says.

Although Wayne Marshall is not known for slackness or portraying the gangster image that many persons may align to other members of the Alliance, Marshall sees his role in the Alliance as trying to bring some amount of balance.

"Me a di guardian angel weh haffi be among dem (Alliance). My role in the Alliance is to bring dah kind a vibe deh. They might be known for the gangsta vibes but everybody in the Alliance represent various things, it's never jus a one-track thing. But I jus be me an do my part and Bounty, Mavado, everybody else in the Alliance accept me for that. Mi nuh haffi change who me is, mi nuh feel pressured and I feel I have a very important role to play in the Alliance and balance out how people view me an my crew," Marshall said.

This attitude undoubtedly reflects in many of Marshall's recent songs. For example, Marshall has a couple of songs warning about HIV, AIDS in Dying For A Cure featuring Alaine and Silent Murderer. Then other songs like Happy Days, Praise Him and I See The Picture (produced by Mickey Bennett and featured on Third World's Grammy-nominated album) and more recently, a song with gospel deejay, Prodigal Son all speak to Marshall's thrust on the righteous path.

"Some of my songs are like a divine intervention. I always try to be conscious and righteous as possible when I'm formatting my lyrics," Marshall said.

Natural vibe

As for working with Prodigal, Marshall says, "It was a natural vibe, he works with Solid Agency and the rhythm was bouncing. Prodigal had a likkle idea and mi jus come on an voice my piece. It's basically wising up di youts, telling them they don't have the power to give life so why take it. All judgement should be left up to God."

Adding, "Me, Assassin and Buju also have a tune coming out soon, it's about giving praises and glorifying the one who gives us life an mi really a look forward to that song being released soon cause in that song we glorify that is one God that everybody come under."

Currently, Marshall has a video out for Forgive Them Please, directed by Ras Kasa on the campfire label, but says, "Nuff more things a come fi di new year, whole heap a work a gwaan right now. Wi doing some more videos soon for Polly Tics and some other songs we have out."
Police have confirmed that both Mavado, and selector Foota Hype are wanted in relation to a shooting yesterday at the home of Exodus studio owner, Ernest Braithwaite, otherwise called Father Romeo.

The incident occurred about 5:55 p.m. yesterday, and is being blamed on the ongoing feud between dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel, real name Adijah Palmer, and Mavado. Father Romeo says that Kartel's decision to begin birthday celebrations on Sunday at a private studio beside the home, almost resulted in the death of his wife.

fired from car

According to police, the incident occurred when a white Toyota Corolla registered 7771 EP, was seen driving past the gates of the private studio, situated along Kirk Avenue in Havendale. It is alleged that when Mrs. Braithwaite (wife of Father Romeo) arrived at the home, the vehicle reappeared and the occupants fired several shots, before speeding off.

Cops say an eyewitness positively identified Mavado, real name David Brooks, as the actual 'trigger man' in the incident. The eyewitness told the STAR, "Mi see a man very much resembling Mavado, 'cause him wind down di window when him a buss shot. Dem all try shoot me, but mi dive."

Although no one was hurt in the incident, Jennifer Braithwaite says she was almost killed, as one of the bullets hit the back glass of her vehicle as she drove in.

"It's not as if I was at the wrong place at the wrong time, I was pulling into my home! I saw a white car on the road, when Jerry (handy-man) pulled the gate for me to drive in, the next thing I know is I hear shots. It happened so fast I didn't even duck," said Mrs. Braithwaite.

In addition, it is also alleged that the motorcar that was identified is owned by fellow Cassava Piece resident, Foota Hype. But Foota Hype says he is being set up by persons who believe that he is too close with Bounty Killer and the Alliance family.

He told the STAR, "Dem a seh me shot up Exodus house, when me nuh know nutt'n bout dat. Mi nuh know if Exodus house get shot up, mi jus hear people a seh it get shot up an dem a seh a me do it," Foota explained.

But police say that they will still be seeking both persons. They confirmed that Foota Hype had reported a death threat from Father Romeo's son, Gary Exodus.

"He came and reported a threat related to the incident, and the other party was warned to desist, but that was before we received information about the vehicle registration, and eyewitness statements. We are now seeking both Mavado and Foota Hype, who can assist us with investigations," said an officer from the Constant Spring CIB.

When contacted, Vybz Kartel, who is said to be in a feud with Mavado, said he believes his rival is innocent. "I don't think he (Mavado) did that. I think it was a fanatic's work," Kartel told The STAR.

He continued, "We as artistes need to stop inciting physical violence because we are public figures and admirers of the people. We need a peaceful music industry, that way joy crosses over into the minds and hearts of the fans. Singer (Mavado), a much love. I'm gonna kill yuh wit lyrics, big up Beenie man, an big up Bounty. Jamaica needs love a di motto fi 2007."

Mavado was unable to comment on the matter, as he was in studio.more news

'WalkOut Muma Saw WalkOut'! After three successful albums '99 Ways', 'Gimme a Reason' and 'Passion', Saw is at the finale with 'WalkOut'. Why the title 'WalkOut' many may ask? "It's just for controversy which us dancehall people love, the song created a controversial vibe in the dancehall society whenever they heard it and so I want people to feel the album, not only will it create such a vibe but also bring comfort and cover everyday issues like Low Self Esteem and for those who have had Miscarriages.

'Infertility' the first single with VP Records for the album is an inspirational song for those who have had miscarriages, "I have been through two miscarriages in a year and the feeling is not pleasant, but there was joy in my life when I got pregnant and I thought I would be able to complete my life with a healthy child but is wasn't so, however I still give God thanks, I will remain trying". Muma plans to shoot a video for 'Infertility' and she is confident that a lot of women will be touched and it will be well received around the entertainment fraternity.

IPB Image

However 'Chat to mi Back' is also listed for one of the tracks on the album, which was produced by Roach. The song is hitting up the airwaves as we speak; the video that was premiered couple weeks ago is receiving heavy rotation and requests on Hype TV and RE TV.

"I am not the world's most prettiest" among the other tracks is one of Saw's favorite on the album, "I sang the song at SumFest last year and it left patrons in awe, so I went to Sly and Robbie and they are the musical geniuses behind the song, so I decided that this will be a track on the album, the song speaks about low self esteem; for ladies who think they are ugly, too fat, too skinny, pug nose and straight nose.

But you know that Lady Saw wouldn't be Lady Saw without something 'Raw', she adds that there is also a song titled 'The Power of the P-U-M', which both the males and females are going to enjoy.

The album 'Walkout' is slated to release sometime this year and will feature between fifteen to sixteen tracks.

Chat with Saw

Who are some of the producers of the album:

Myself, Roach, Chams, Ward21, Jam2, Jon Jon, Sly and Robbie etc.

Are there any collaborations:

Actually myself and Akon was supposed to get together, he wanted me to do a female version to his song 'I wanna love You' but because of our schedules it was not forthcoming but we will get some work done, and also John Legend

What changes would you like to see in the music fraternity for 2007 and beyond:

Never mix business with pleasure, be professional entirely with your business partners because at times they are too relaxed and work don't get done.

Stop this drama in the music, music is music and we need to stop taking everything personal, that sometimes bring forth violence and we don't want that for our music.

What was your most memorable moment for 2006:

The joy of being pregnant.

What was your worst moment for 2006:

Having lost two children in a year.

Message for Jamaica:

Let us STOP the violence and enjoy our country it has a lot to offer both to us the citizens and visitors.
Shots fired - Mavado/Kartel feud intensifies?

08-Jan-07 | by K'riq

The police have confirmed that unknown assailants shot up a corner where entertainer David Mavado Brooks hangs out along the Cassava Piece gully bank in St. Andrew. A 34 year-old man was shot and injured in the incident, but was treated and later released.
It was a drive-by shooting that happened at about 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, and eyewitnesses said that it was a black car that was seen leaving the crime scene. A man was shot and injured, he was shot in the buttocks and later released from the hospital. Right now, it is still just a rumour about the shooting being a result of a feud between two entertainers, a member of the Constant Spring C.I.B, told One876Entertainment.com.
The shooting occurred at a location less than a mile from the nearby Constant Spring police station.

Mavado has been involved in a recent feud with deejay Vybz Kartel and they have traded barbs over songs such as Mavados Songwriter, Kartels Dem a P--- inna Bad Man Place and the latest song by Mavado has derogatory lines about Kartels babymother and labels him an informer.
Sources close to both camps gave reports that suggested that the feud between the two had become personal, especially when Kartel heard the track while hanging out with friends as he celebrated his birthday on Sunday.

A member of Mavados camp told One876Entertainment.com that when he arrived at Cassava Piece, he saw a black car speeding away from the scene.

Efforts to get comments from Mavado and Vybz Kartel proved futile.

Spragga and Jana Bent are no strangers to each other. This is the second song Spragga and Jana Bent have recorded and shot a music video for. The first song was recorded in Ochi and shot in LA, in late 2003 - called Thuggin' and Lovin'.

This new song is called Move Your Body and is being pre-released in Japan this week. It will be released in Jamaica soon, but the music video should be in rotation by next week.

The video shoot went very well. It was directed by Nordia Rose and shot on location at Club Medusa formerly McAppleton's at 96 Hope Road.

"We had a nice crowd, with a few celebrities in the house - including the very hot Da'Ville, Andrew Donalds, VC, Scott Wilson, and Adam Warren Jana Bent(a young Jamaican Doctor in San Francisco who is here in Jamaica making a special donation of hospital equipment and supplies to KPH). Also in attendance were Claudette Powell, Courtney Panton and his four sons who formed the band, as well as the Cuban Dancers, Elena, Cari and Madeline," commented an enthusiastic Jana Bent.

"By the time, the shoot was half way complete, everyone on the set was singing along with the chorus of the song," said a proud Jana Bent. "The story line was simple - performance with a live band, plus Spragga and me one away in intimate settings 'admiring' (translation, 'pawing') each other. Cuban dancers acting as Jana's backing vocalists/dancers in performance and also dancing together having fun. Celebrities were playing audience dancing to the music as Spragga and I were performing," reported Jana.

Napster, the pioneer of digital music, today announced the winners of the "2006 Napster Awards," the first awards to honor artists and songs for accomplishments in digital music.

Most-Played R&B Song Unfaithful by Rihanna
Most-Played Reggae Artist Sean Paul
Most-Played Reggae Song Temperature by Sean Paul

Sean Paul In contrast to other music industry awards, the Napster Awards are determined by the actual listening behavior of music fans that subscribe to Napster's industry-leading subscription service and play over one billion songs each year. Presented to the artists and songs that enjoyed the highest number of plays in the service between Thursday, December 1, 2005 and Thursday, November 30, 2006, the Napster Awards illustrate that there is a significant difference between the music that sells the most and the music that's played the most when fans are in an unlimited access music subscription environment.
clickhere.jpg

Napster subscribers have on-demand, unlimited access to over 3 million full-length songs for one monthly fee without paying a dollar a track, so their listening activities are a measure of the songs and artists they actively Rihannachose to play most over the past year. Napster calculated the total number of plays of each song and artist in its vast catalog over the past year in each of the five countries where it offers its PC-based service to determine the recipients of the 2006 Napster Awards. Napster also created categories that go beyond the mainstream in order to reflect the diversity of music that fans chose when they had the freedom to discover, explore and enjoy without limits.

"The Napster Awards provide insight into how music fans behave when they can listen to an enormous variety of music away from restrictive radio playlists, limited retail shelf space and 30-second clip, buck a track digital stores," said Chris Gorog, chairman and CEO of Napster. "When consumers are given unlimited access to music and are freed from having to pay for each individual song in order to hear it, it's interesting to see how this freedom changes what they want to actually listen to. We congratulate all of the 2006 Napster Award winners, and look forward to continuing to honor the music Napster subscribers enjoy playing the most."

Each Napster Award recipient will receive an impressive trophy featuring the infamous Napster Kitty® acknowledging their accomplishment. In celebration of the inaugural year of the Napster Awards, Napster is currently featuring a playlist which showcases many of the award-winning artists and songs on its Web site that U.S. music fans can stream for free at http://www.napster.com/free. As always, Napster subscribers in all territories can enjoy the playlist in CD-quality sound and on-demand through the Napster application.
