Description:
Dating should be fun. It's not like your whole life or livelihood depends on one date or several dates. The purpose of dating is simple: getting to know someone and letting them get to know you so that you can decide whether you're interested in spending any more time together. Nothing more, nothing less. Put aside the notion that you're looking for a mate or a one-night stand or someone to please your mom. You're just dating so that you can get to know somebody a bit and let them get to know you.

Residents of Portmore and surrounding areas are set to benefit from a cultural experience as the Portmore Wellness Centre will present their seventh annual Black History Month concert at the Portmore Heart Academy auditorium on February 17.
According to Simone Baker, one of the organisers, the aim of the activities is to awake the consciousness of black people as to their true history and what it means to celebrate the occasion and as such it will be held under the team, 'The Best of Black History, Dance, Music and Drama'.
The occasion, which will start at 3 p.m., will have persons entertained, by way of drumming, dance, songs and poetry and to add to all this, it will be free to attend.
The show will be emceed by Christopher 'Johnny' Daley and Tricia Lee, and according to Baker it will live up to the theme of being the best of black history.
February will be celebrated as Black History Month and as such the organisers hoped that, once more, their efforts to awake the minds of the people will be rewarded in their turnout in great numbers to enjoy the Sunday evening activity.
Meanwhile Mayor of Portmore, Keith Hinds, told THE PORTMORE STAR that he endorsed the concert and will be doing all in his power to give his support to the organisers.
"I think its a good thing and as such I will be supporting it one way or another," he said.
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (CNN) -- Large swathes of Asia, the Middle East and north Africa had their high-technology services crippled Thursday following a widespread Internet failure which brought many businesses to a standstill and left others struggling to cope.
Hi-tech Dubai has been hit hard by an Internet outage apparently caused by a cut undersea cable.
One major telecommunications provider blamed the outage, which started Wednesday, on a major undersea cable failure in the Mediterranean.
India's Internet bandwidth has been sliced in half, The Associated Press reported, leaving its lucrative outsourcing industry trying to reroute traffic to satellites and other cables through Asia.
Reports say that Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain are also experiencing severe problems.
Nations that have been spared the chaos include Israel -- whose traffic uses a different route -- and Lebanon and Iraq. Many Middle East governments have backup satellite systems in case of cable failure.
There were contradictory reports on the real cause behind the disruption, but Du, a state-owned Dubai telecom provider, attributed it to an undersea cable cut between Alexandria, Egypt and Palermo, Italy.
An official at Egypt's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, speaking on condition of anonymity, said it was believed that a boat's anchor may have caused the problems, although this was unconfirmed, AP reported. He added that it might take up to a week to repair the fault.
Kuwait's Ministry of Communications said the problem could take two weeks to solve, according to a statement carried by the state news agency, KUNA.
There were concerns in India that an Internet slowdown could affect trading patterns at the country's two major exchanges, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in Delhi and the SENSEX exchange in Bombay.
Rajesh Chharia, president of India's Internet Service Providers' Association, explained that some firms were trying to reroute via Pacific cables and that companies serving the eastern US and the UK were worst affected, AP added.
Besides the Internet, the outage caused major disruption to television and phone services, creating chaos for the UAE's public and private sectors.
The Du internal memo, obtained by CNN, called the situation in Dubai "critical" and stated that the cable's operators did not know when services would be restored.

I mean, how can you ignore the polling numbers? The Patriots were beating the front-runners (San Diego Chargers, Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts) and it was obvious they'd be the AFC nominee. So I wrote that New England wouldn't lose another game. Not in the regular season. Not in the postseason.
My name is Geno, and I approve this Patriots message.
Presenting 15 Reasons Why You Can Schedule Another Super Bowl Victory Parade In Boston:
Giving Bill Belichick two weeks to prepare for a game is like giving Albert Einstein two weeks to take the SATs. Nothing against Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, but Belichick has no peer when it comes to devising a defensive game plan. Not only that, but he has the benefit of time, as well as smart, veteran players who know how to translate Belichick's complex schemes from the grease board to the field.
"You give him two weeks and you've got problems,'' said former Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi, a longtime Belichick admirer. "[His players] think he gives them an edge.''
He does. The Patriots had just five prep days between their Game 15 win against Miami and their Christmas-week Game 16 road win against the Giants -- and it showed. (And, yes, I know: The Giants only had five prep days, too. But this isn't a "Why-The-G-Men-Will-Win'' column. So live with it.)
New York scored 35 points and Eli Manning threw for four touchdowns, completed 22 of 32 passes and recorded his highest QB rating of the regular season (118.6). Belichick must want to ralph everytime he watches the game film. Manning, even this new and improved playoff version, won't throw four this time. The Giants won't score 35. Or 25, for that matter.
It took Peyton Manning three playoff tries before he finally overcame Belichick and those schemes. Belichick will make Eli wait, too. After all, there's a reason the Hoodie is 15-3 in the postseason.
New England loves do-overs.
Beginning with the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 21, 2007, the Patriots have faced five opponents (Colts, Jets, Chargers, Dolphins and Bills) twice during the past 12 months. So how good are Belichick and the Pats at making adjustments?
Well, the Colts scored 38 the first time, 20 points in the '07 regular-season rematch. The Jets went from 14 points to 10; the Chargers from 14 to 12 (and no TDs); the Dolphins from 28 to seven. Only the Bills bumped up, from seven the first game to 10 (whooee!) in the rematch.
The Giants make rematch No. 6. Uh, oh.
A-F-C.
The American Football Conference champion has won four consecutive Super Bowls, six of the last seven and eight of the last 10. Is that any good?
This pre-Super Bowl scenario sound familiar?
"Tom Brady demonstrated in practice today that he is fit to play,'' Belichick said. "He will be our starting quarterback on Sunday.''
The passage is from a New York Times story written a few days before the Super Bowl -- the 2001 Super Bowl between the Patriots and St. Louis Rams.
Brady was nursing an ankle sprain back then, just like he is for Super Bowl XLII. The difference? He had only one week of rehab time between the 2001 AFC Championship Game and SB XXXVI. This time he has two.
How'd he do in his first Super Bowl appearance, on a semi-gimpy ankle? Only beat the favored Rams and won the game's MVP award.
I've got nothing against predictions. If Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress gets his 23-17 guarantee right, he becomes this generation's Joe Namath.
Problem is, the Patriots do take these things personally. Just ask Pittsburgh's Anthony Smith, who guaranteed a Week 14 win against New England, or San Diego's Igor Olshansky, who popped off about the Pats a week before their AFC Championship Game meeting.
Patriots 34, Steelers 13 Patriots 21, Chargers 12.
Brady sort of laughed off Burress' prediction ("We're only going to score 17 points? OK."), but don't forget this is the same guy who made a beeline for the Steelers' Smith after throwing a touchdown against him in the Dec. 9 win.
Put it this way: Burress didn't do the Giants any favors.
If any team is equipped to handle a Super Bowl and the weight of a first-ever 19-0 season, it's the Patriots. They are the ultimate live-in-the-moment team, almost never allowing themselves to get overwhelmed by the hype.
The Patriots actually practice humility, to the point of discussing in team meetings how much to reveal to the media during interviews. Typical Pats. Prepare for everything.
But just because they're guarded with their comments doesn't mean they've forgotten what's at stake Sunday. They have a chance at football immortality, no small thing in their business. Lose this game and the 18 previous wins mean bupkus.
Two years ago, I said Pittsburgh's Antwaan Randle El would be the Super Bowl X factor. Back pat for me: Randle El threw the TD pass that clinched the Steelers' win against Seattle. Last year I picked Chicago Bears rookie defensive end Mark Anderson as the X factor, which just goes to show that you should never inhale oil-based paint fumes before writing columns.
This time I'm sweet on Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel. I think strong safety Rodney Harrison will spend considerable time in the box (either blitzing or helping on run support), which means more responsibility for New England's corners. Samuel is the guy who will respond.
X-factor runner-up: wide receiver Jabar Gaffney.
The Patriots have 42 players on their roster with playoff experience. Twenty Patriots have a combined 46 games of Super Bowl experience. Eleven of the Patriots starters have started in previous Super Bowls. And this will be Belichick's fourth Super Bowl as a head coach.
The Giants? Not so much.
Only three of the Giants' 53 players on the active roster have played in a Super Bowl. Only one of those three owns a Super Bowl ring: backup offensive lineman/special teams player Grey Reugamer, who earned his ring with the Patriots in 2001.
"Playing in three or four Super Bowls really isn't going to make any difference whether you make the plays that you need to make to win the game,'' said Pats linebacker Mike Vrabel.
That Vrabel. Such a kidder.
Will experience help you make a key tackle? No, but it will help prepare you for the sometimes suffocating pressure of playing in a Super Bowl.
Have you noticed that Randy Moss has exactly two catches for 32 yards and no touchdowns in the Patriots' two playoff victories? Did you notice that he had six catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns in the 38-35 win against the Giants on Dec. 29?
Something has to give, and I think it will be the Giants' secondary. It isn't an accident that Moss is 10th on the league's all-time career touchdown list and first on the single-season list.
The Jacksonville Jaguars and Chargers double- and triple-teamed him. Chances are the Giants will do the same. Makes sense. But I still think Moss will get a handful of openings to make plays. And if he doesn't, Wes Welker (11 receptions, 122 yards vs. the Giants), Donte' Stallworth or Jabar Gaffney will roam relatively free.
Patriots defensive end Richard Seymour has it right when he says New England must pressure Giants quarterback Eli Manning and do something about New York's running game. Manning was sacked just one time while completing 22 of 32 passes for 251 yards and four touchdowns against the Pats in the December game. And in the NFC Championship Game against Green Bay, the Giants rushed for 134 clock-consuming yards and two touchdowns.
"If we don't stop the run, we definitely have no chance in this football game,'' said Seymour.
This is the part of the Giants that probably gives Belichick the heebie-jeebies. Jacobs is a bruiser, and Ahmad Bradshaw, who was inactive against the Patriots, is a slasher. But the Patriots have seen similar tag teams like this: the Jaguars' Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew (a combined 66 yards and zero TDs in the recent divisional playoff loss to New England) and LaDainian Tomlinson and Michael Turner (a combined 46 yards and zero TDs in Game 2 of the regular season).
I think Belichick's game plan will center on stopping Jacobs/Bradshaw and forcing Manning to beat them.
"I've been able to play smart,'' said Manning, who has yet to throw an interception during the Giants' 3-0 postseason run. Belichick and that experienced defense will figure a way to make Manning play dumb.
"They're a better team than the one that lost to us by three points,'' said Vrabel of the Giants.
He's right. The Giants are good enough to win. The Giants know it (just ask Plax), but more importantly, the Patriots know it.
Maybe the smart guys in Vegas have it right, but the 12-point spread feels like too much. So any chance of the Patriots' being even remotely overconfident goes directly into Rich Rodriguez's shredder.
The Patriots will take New York's best shot -- and it will be a solid stomach punch -- but recover and eventually impose their Hoodie will.
Despite playing one less playoff game than the Giants, New England's offense has gained only 137 fewer yards. In nearly every meaningful offensive category, the Patriots are better than the Giants. And no team has given up fewer points per game during the playoffs than the Patriots.
By the way, the Patriots set or tied 13 NFL offensive team records this season.
I don't want to make a big deal about it, but Brady is god.
"Not the best quarterback I've ever played with, but the best quarterback that has ever been put in this league,'' said Moss.
Look, I've never actually met supermodel Gisele Bundchen, but she doesn't deserve two-time Super Bowl MVP Brady. She probably can't even name any of the 18 NFL records Brady set or tied in 2007.
And it's true: There's no getting around Manning's improvement, especially during the crunch time of the postseason. But Manning is still two or three elevator stops below Brady.
Brady is 14-2 in the playoffs. Only Green Bay's Bart Starr (9-1, .900) has a better winning percentage than Brady (.875). Brady is 30-5 in games decided by six points or fewer (6-1 in the playoffs). He's 3-0 in Super Bowls.
So not to put too fine of a point on it, but when you start comparing positions, you place a very large checkmark next to Brady's name.
The guy doesn't even start, but you can argue that he might be the third-most valuable player in the Patriots' offense, just behind Brady and Moss.
Faulk rushed for minus-2 yards against the Giants in the Dec. 29 win, but his real worth is as a receiver out of the backfield, especially in key third-down situations.
He had eight catches for 64 yards against New York. He had five catches for 36 yards against Jacksonville in the divisonal playoff. He had eight catches for 82 yards (to lead all NE receivers) in the AFC Championship Game.
He's the ultimate role player.
I won't be shocked if the Giants somehow win this game. Surprised, but not shocked.
New York has won 10 consecutive road games. Manning hasn't thrown a postseason interception. The Giants' D-line is to die for. Jacobs and Bradshaw are difference-makers. Burress is a matchup nightmare.
But I simply think more matchups favor the Patriots. I think they have more depth, more experience, more Brady, more everything.

A large United States spy satellite weighing about 20,000lb has lost power and could slam into Earth in late February or early March, government officials said Saturday.
The satellite, which no longer can be controlled, could contain hazardous materials, and it is unknown where on the planet it might come down, they said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the information is classified as secret. It was not clear how long ago the satellite lost power, or under what circumstances.
Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the National Security Council, said, "Numerous satellites over the years have come out of orbit and fallen harmlessly. We are looking at potential options to mitigate any possible damage this satellite may cause.''
The spacecraft contains hydrazine, which is rocket fuel, a government official divulged. Hydrazine is a toxic chemical and can cause harm to anyone who comes into contact with it.
An uncontrolled re-entry could risk exposure of US secrets, said John Pike, a defence and intelligence expert. Spy satellites typically are disposed of through a controlled re-entry into the ocean so that no one else can access the spacecraft, he said.
Pike also said it was not likely the threat from the satellite could be eliminated by shooting it down with a missile because that would create debris that would then re-enter the atmosphere and burn up or hit the ground.
The satellite is estimated to be the size of a small bus.
In 1979, a 78-ton abandoned space station fell from orbit into the Indian Ocean.

UTech sends internal auditors on leave |
Thursday, January 31, 2008 |
THE entire staff of the Internal Audit Unit of the University of Technology (UTech) was yesterday afternoon sent on leave, pending an investigation into the leaking of a scathing audit report that was published in the press over the weekend.
Members of the unit - three audit officers and two support staff members - were issued letters informing that they were being sent on leave on suspicion that the report leaked to the Sunday Herald emanated from the department, a source told the Observer.
Our source said the staff members, some of whom have served the university for the past 15 years, were handed their letters and asked to pack up their personal belongings, while being watched by security guards. The lock on the unit's office door was also changed.
The leaked audit report, which was last September commissioned by then pro-chancellor, Dr Blossom O'Meally Nelson, allegedly cited spending that exceeded $1 million, in one case, for expenditure relating to a senior staff member HAITI - Poor forced to use dirt as food

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP):
It was lunchtime in one of Haiti's worst slums, and Charlene Dumas was eating mud.
With food prices rising, Haiti's poorest cannot afford even a daily plate of rice, and some take desperate measures to fill their bellies.
Mud cookies
Charlene, 16, with a one-month-old son, has come to rely on a traditional Haitian remedy for hunger pangs: cookies made of dried yellow dirt from the country's central plateau.
The mud has long been prized by pregnant women and children here as an antacid and source of calcium. But in places like Cite Soleil, the oceanside slum where Charlene shares a two-room house with her baby, five siblings and two unemployed parents, cookies made of dirt, salt and vegetable shortening have become a regular meal.
"When my mother does not cook anything, I have to eat them three times a day,'' Charlene said. Her baby, named Woodson, lay still across her lap, looking slightly thinner than the slim 6 pounds, 3 ounces (2.8 kilograms) he weighed at birth.
Though she likes their buttery, salty taste, Charlene said the cookies also give her stomach pains. "When I nurse, the baby sometimes seems colicky too,'' she said.
Floods and crop damage from the 2007 hurricane season forced the agency to declare states of emergency in Haiti and several other countries.
High Food prices
At the market in the La Salines slum, two cups of rice now sell for US$0.60, up US$0.10 from December and 50 per cent from a year ago. Beans, condensed milk and fruit have gone up at a similar rate, and even the price of the edible clay has risen over the past year by almost US$1.50. Dirt to make 100 cookies now costs US$5, the cookie makers say.
Still, at about five cents apiece, the cookies are a bargain compared to food staples.
Merchants truck the dirt from the central town of Hinche to the La Salines market, a maze of tables of sweet-smelling vegetables and meat swarming with flies. Women buy the dirt, then process it into mudcookies in places such as Fort Dimanche, a nearby shanty town.
Carrying buckets of dirt and water up ladders to the roof of the former prison for which the slum is named, they strain out rocks and clumps on a sheet, and stir in shortening and salt. Then they pat the mixture into mudcookies and leave them to dry under the scorching sun.

POLICE Commissioner Hardley Lewin yesterday gave Jamaicans two weeks to clean up their act or face the consequences of a zero-tolerance policy which the police will be adopting.
Speaking at a press conference in Kingston yesterday, Lewin said the police would be coming down hard on breaches of the road traffic, night noise, anti-litter and environment laws.
"People need to be warned. In the next fortnight, if you don't have a helmet, get one, if you don't have seat belts installed in your car, get one. Action will be taken," Lewin said.
The police chief told reporters that among his priorities was bringing more perpetrators of gun and drug related crimes to book.
He said the development of an anti-extortion plan, the infiltration of criminal networks, improvement of the constabulary's ability to profile gangs and their members and improved relations with local, regional and international law enforcement partners were some of the tasks to be undertaken by the officers under his charge.
But Lewin stayed away from setting targets and instead asked for an assessment of his performance at the end of the year.

No cellphones in schools |
Thursday, January 31, 2008 |
THE education ministry has slapped a ban on cellphone use in schools, and imposed behaviour and dress codes on students and teachers as part of efforts to curb the high level of violence in the institutions.
Minister of Education Andrew Holness, who outlined the new measures yesterday, said that as a minimum standard, cellphone use during classes and other designated times would be banned.
The minister said while there were arguments in favour of using cellphones during school hours, the ministry considered the safety of the children first.
Cellphones, which are popular among school children, have figured in a number of violent incidents in schools. Students with phones have been targets for robberies, while some have used them to call for support during fights.
There have been ongoing debates between parents and teachers on the use of cellphones in schools, with some Parent Teachers' Associations strongly advocating for their children to be allowed to use their phones. Some schools have, however, placed a total ban on cellphones and students found carry the instruments have been punished.
Meanwhile, Holness said the introduction of time-out facilities for disruptive students, the use of metal detectors to search for weapons, and the fencing of all school premises as part of their standard security measures, were also approved by the administration as part of plans to clamp down on the growing level of violence in schools.
He said all schools must be fenced and have designated entrance and exit points to give administrators more control. Visitors to schools, he said, should be screened while certain areas should be off limits to visitors.
Metal detection wands, said Holness, would be distributed to schools in a programme of no-contact searches for knives and other weapons.
In addition, the minister announced that surveillance cameras and panic alarm systems could be installed in high-risk schools. However, he did not commit the ministry's resources for this purpose.
But even with the new measures, the minister has urged school principals to be proactive in identifying potential security problems before they occur.
"Violence doesn't come by surprise; there are always indicators. Our school leaders need to be trained in identifying the precursor to crises," Holness said.
The minister, speaking at a press conference in Kingston yesterday, said there were 96 serious incidents of violence in schools last year, which included stabbings, sexual abuse, vandalism and school invasions. The most recent serious incident was the beating and stabbing a teacher by an angry mob at the Garlogie Primary and Junior High School in Manchester on January 17.
Yesterday, the minister expressed disappointment that there had not been any arrests so far in relation to the incident, in which a group of persons reportedly invaded the school premises and chopped and beat the male teacher, a day after he beat a student who did not do his homework.
"To date no arrests have been made, but the police are there, and they are not leaving until the persons who committed this act are held accountable and an example is made of them," Holness told reporters.
The minister said he had sought the support of both the Minister of National Security Derrick Smith and Police Commissioner Hardley Lewin on what he said was a criminal matter.
An officer at the Williamsfield Police Station in Manchester said yesterday that the investigation had not yet been completed as there were still outstanding statements to be collected.
"Mob beatings are never cleared up within a day because the (alleged victim) has to come and identify the persons...It's not an individual thing where you can say it's Dick, Tom or Harry," the officer said.

Some people found it funny, some found it surprising, and others were left confused following the beating of a man on a bus in downtown Kingston on Friday.
A large crowd converged as a woman gave her man a proper flogging after he had lied to her about his whereabouts, not knowing she was only a stone's throw away and was actually looking at him.
The incident took place at the Portmore bus park, where the man, who was in the company of another woman heading for a Portmore destination, responded to a call on his cellular phone.
He was overheard telling the other person on the line that he was on his way to May Pen, Clarendon, and was in the vicinity of the Vineyards toll plaza.
Connecting blows
Before he could complete his story the woman he was apparently telling his location, got up from a seat in the back of the bus, grabbed him by his collar and began connecting blows all over his body while using some colourful language to describe him.
By this time the man's female companion was trying to make a hasty retreat, but she too was prevented from getting away and was also given a few blows from the beater who was apparently the 'woman a yard'.
The beating lasted for approximately five minutes, with the man not raising a hand to prevent the blows or even trying to fight back.
During the melee, the man's national Identification card fell from his pocket. It revealed that he was from a Rollington Town, Kingston, address.
After the fiasco, the 'beater woman' apparently changed her travel plans and left the bus with the man who stood outside the bus door checking himself for *lo** and any serious injuries.
This was where many people realised that the woman had obviously noticed her man in a location he ought not to have been and dialed his number to check up on him.

In recent times there have been talks of a possible Scare Dem Crew reunion but this has been denied by the former members of the group.
"No sah, no reunion no deh deh. Everybody a jus brethren. Wi naah go do no booking together 'cause every man have dem own career," said Elephant Man, as he dispelled rumours of a reunion. He left the group in 1999. Ele, however, pointed out that the members of the crew are still friends as they still 'link up' on a regular basis.
"Wi nuh need nobody fi tell wi fi come together an' do a song. Wi can jus do wi ting," he added.
Harry Toddler, another former member of the group, says they have not reunited but any decision to reunite will be made by Elephant Man. He, however, made mention of a song they will do with members of the Bounty Killer-led Alliance.
Scare dem-alliance?
This was confirmed by Elephant Man who says the song is called One For All, All For One. It was produced by Birch Hill and will be released soon. "Bounty start the group and him seh it would be good if we do a Scare Dem an' Alliance song," he said.
Nitty Kutchie says he would be happy for a reunion but this can only be decided by Bounty Killer who started the group and, as a result, he 'calls the shots'. He says they have always been a unit and it will remain that way as they still 'link' and party together.
"If wi fi unite on record mi ready fi it. It was just a likkle difference wid (Harry) Toddler and (Bounty) Killer di other day but everything gungu back yah now," Nitty Kutchie said in reference to a confrontation between Bounty Killer and Harry Toddler. Bounty Killer reportedly struck Harry Toddler in his eye following a disagreement.

Scholars across the world believe that major earthquakes in any country tend to occur between 85 - 110 years apart. The last major earthquake to affect the island was the 1907 Port Royal quake. This was 100 years ago. The next major earthquake, which affected the western section of the island, occurred 50 years later in 1957.
Kretchet Greaves, director of information and training at the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), told THE STAR, "It is always important to remain in a state of readiness and historically, we've had earthquakes every 50 - 100 years. We're seeing a kind of trend, but it is not for certain. It's just a guide. As a matter of fact, we haven't had a major earthquake in a while, so we need to be alert."
She said the main obstacle that is facing ODPEM is the fact that Jamaicans have become complacent. "Disasters tend to come in a time of complacency and it is unpreparedness that really creates the disaster instead of the hazard itself. Great disasters are born out of complacency and it creates an environment for the kind of disasters that we want to avert. It is likely that we could have an earthquake soon and we are seeing the type of complacency that usually precedes a major disaster. I really think we need to jolt the country out of it."
Great disaster
Greaves told THE STAR that some people are unconcerned about the threat of earthquakes because they cannot really remember experiencing a great disaster. For example, hurricanes Gilbert and Ivan, are still fresh in people's minds.
"We need to get people to prepared for the event, rather than wait on it to come," she said. "We have to find avenues to appeal to the public, using the experiences of others, for example those in the Indian Ocean. We need to look at global and regional experiences, like the 2005 earthquake that affected the Caribbean. We have to prepare people to act in the event of a situation that they don't have direct experience with."
When THE STAR spoke with members of the public, most revealed that they did not take the threat of earthquakes seriously. Sheryl, told THE STAR, "No. I pay more attention to hurricanes because hurricane come every year. It's not a major threat compared to hurricanes, in terms of frequency. Hurricanes are a must, earthquakes are a maybe. And what kind of preparation can I make for an earthquake?"
Major concern
Though admitting that the country has a far way to go in terms of having infrastructure that is ready for earthquakes, she said we have come a long way. "We are better than we were a few years ago. The way they construct business places is much more earthquake-sensitive, as opposed to in 1907. We have made strides but more can be done especially in terms of legislation. The points of concern we have are the inner-city areas, parts of Montego Bay and Kingston and St.Andrew, mainly because of the population density. Port Royal is also a major concern by virtue of its coastal location."
ODPEM recently concluded its annual earthquake awareness week and according to Greaves, the message is getting out there. "We've made an initial impact but we need to sustain it in a real way."
She added also that hope is not lost as "There has been a continuos increase in training requests from churches, service clubs and schools. People are asking us to come in and the numbers are increasing on a monthly basis." She said this a good sign as these organisations reach a lot of people.
However, according to Dr. Margaret Wiggins-Grandison, research fellow and seismologist at the earthquake unit, this notion is based purely on speculation and not scientific fact. She said there is no way to predict when an earthquake will strike, so Jamaicans need to be always alert and prepared. She said, "There is no pattern. It's just a statistic. I wouldn't say there is a set pattern. We haven't had a really major earthquake since 1692, and that was 316 years ago. The trend is sketchy."

Less than two years ago, in the midst of the popular artiste's lyrical feud, Beenie Man began dating Bounty Killer's x-girfriend, D'Angel. Whom he eventually married and and had a child with. Months later after a much publicized fallout the two went their seperate ways but not without a media frenzy.
Now, it appears to have happened again. Hpnotiq Qrew is hearing whispers that Beenie Man is secretly dating Bounty Killer's current girlfriend - Latiesh Flawless. Word is that during a recent concert Beenie Man got Latiesha's number and the two have been secretly dating ever since.
And they were pretty brazen about things. Here's what Dancehall Diva Peach from the website Badh.biz, reports seeing a few moments before Bounty Killer took the stage at Jagga B's party:
"While I was up in the VIP section I introduced Latiesh Flawless to Beenie Man and he was not trying to let her leave his side. After a few tugs from me trying to get Latiesh away from him I just gave up and walked away".

Dear Pastor,
I have a problem that I have been struggling with for too long.
I am a 27-year-old virgin who has been a Christian for 12 years. I have these sexual desires that I really cannot take. Trust me, I have tried in more ways than one. I have fasted and prayed, I try not to think about it by keeping myself busy with work and friends but, pastor, it does not work. The sexual desires are even stronger when my period is near and that is when I do the things that I know I am not supposed to.
Twice I went online and had Web sex with guys I do not even know. Well, actually, they were the ones having the sex. I just let them think that I was doing what they said I should be doing. I know that it was wrong but I still indulged in it, just to quench the desires that I had.
There are even times when the desires are so strong that I would imagine that I am having sex. I tell myself that I am not going to have sex until I am married and that I am not going to masturbate because I would prefer the real thing, but these last few days have been very hard to cope with. It is not as if I do not have friends and family members to talk to, to let them know what I am going through, but I am afraid that if they really know what I have been doing, they would be very disappointed in me. I am afraid to tell anyone, not even my mom, whom I am very close to, knows what I have been struggling with.
Pastor, I really wish that I had someone to talk to because there is so much inside of me that I want to let out, "to just spill my guts", so to speak, to someone who would just listen and try to help me and not judge me. I want to talk to someone without worrying if the individual is going to talk, but in a world like this one I am living in, I know that this is not going to happen.
So, please, pastor, help me. Tell me what to do before I end up doing something that I might regret for the rest of my life.
ST, St Catherine, Jamaica.
Dear ST,
Temptation is not a sin, but yielding to temptation is sin. All normal men and women have sexual urges. Whether they are Christian or non-Christian does not change that fact. Prayer and fasting would not prevent you from having sexual desires. Sexual desires are in everyone. It is not unusual for some girls to have strong sexual urges before and immediately their monthly period. Some girls even claim that it is like their bodies are on fire. So I don't want you to think that you are bad why you are experiencing these feelings. You are a sexual being created by God Almighty. And although you do not want to discuss these urges with anyone because that person may misunderstand or ridicule you, I repeat that this normal.
I want to tell you that not having sex will not kill you. No, you are not going to die. The time may come when you are married and the desire for sex will be fulfilled in marriage. What you are doing on the internet is wrong and I want you to know that I don't believe that you have not participated in the activity. You have already given away yourself in your letter. These guys with whom you are engaging in cyber sex may use what you have written to blackmail you. So desist immediately.
Dear Pastor,
I am having a problem with my child's father. The problem is I was pregnant while I was working at a store. I have had the baby and I have tried looking for another job. While I was working I bought my things such as a bed, three-piece coffee table and things that you know a house needs, but because I became pregnant everything stopped. Anyway, the child is now three-and-a-half years old. Behind my child's father's back, I did a little sales work. I got a job as a security officer. I did not know the man would not call me back. I also did a one-week training course at security school. I sat and reasoned with him and I told him that I cannot sit at home and not work. I am twenty-nine years old.
He questioned why I wanted to go and do cheap store work and he also said he is paying me to look after the child. Every week he gives me only $4,000. To be honest, that cannot do much because I have to contribute to paying bills because I live with my parents. Every week he wants me to come over to his mother's house where he lives with his other child. His mother curses a lot of bad words and has no respect for anyone whatsoever. I do not want my child to grow up in that environment. I talked to him about it and asked him if he is going to stay with his mother all the days of his life.
He is 40-plus years old and he still lives with his mother. I reasoned with him and, to be honest, pastor, there is no future there. Everytime he just comes over and we have sex and he gives me the money. He even threatened me that if I go to work, I should give him the child and go live my life. He threatened to come and take the child away from me. I really need your advice, I feel really worthless at home.
Pastor, I am not a lazy person. I just feel like to hire someone to beat him up or lock him up and then I will go look a job and look after my child. I am fed up and tired. Some of my friends say I should not listen to him and just go and get a job. To be honest, I fear him because I know he will take the child away.
I really need your advice on this one. Right now I am seeking jobs at an agency now. Please, help me. I also want to go back to Church because my son keeps on saying that he wants to go to Church. Thank you, pastor.
PH St Andrew, Jamaica
Dear PH,
Do not allow this man to intimidate you. Work and earn your own money. The $4,000 or $5,000 that he is giving you cannot meet all your bills. I congratulate you because you are an ambitious and hard-working lady and you cannot depend on a man. So whether this man like's it or not, get yourself a job.
Concerning his treat to take away your child, do not be worried about that. If he carries out his threat, go to court and tell the magistrate the truth. Magistrates are not fools and you will receive justice. If you still feel threatened by this man, report him to the police.
Pastor
