KELLITS, Clarendon - One of three armed men accused of robbing the Kellits Co-operative Credit Union of more than $1.2 million yesterday was held in a police roadblock yesterday.

The man, who is to face an identification parade, was held along the Chapleton main road while trying to escape from the police in a white Toyota Corolla motor car, in which all three had left after the robbery.

However, his two cronies, who the police said had apparently boarded another vehicle after leaving the credit union, escaped with the loot.

A man claiming to be an eyewitness said that at about 10:00 yesterday morning three "well-dressed men" entered the credit union and pretended to be customers. The three, the man said, pulled guns on the cashiers and ordered that they be taken to the vault, from which they took approximately $1.2 million and escaped in the Corolla motor car.

Three weeks since the Half-Way Tree Transportation Centre opened, reports of robbery and vandalism have already surfaced. Police have confirmed that there has been a case of robbery and a stabbing incident that has already taken place at the facility. Last Thursday, a 14-year-old student was reportedly robbed of his lunch money by knife wielding boys while he made his way to school some time after 6 a.m. The police also reported a stabbing incident between two high school students which left one hospitalised. Though efforts to contact the centre's manager, Victor Green were unsuccessful, employees also claimed that students have already defaced walls and other areas of the facility and have even damaged bathrooms. "Di people dem love wah di park a do fi dem but yu know dem seh anyweh too much people deh is just a matter of time before tings start go wrong," a janitor told THE STAR. "Di place jus open and dem start mark up di wall dem and a mash up all di things dem inna di bathroom." THE STAR team visited the centre yesterday but the graffiti had already been removed. Deputy Superintendent Mcarthur Sutherland, Crime Chief for the St. Andrew Central Division told THE STAR the police have already embarked on a mission to prevent the occurrence of robberies, not only at the transport centre, but in the surrounding area. DSP Sutherland said the police will be utilising "visible arrests" to prevent any further flare up of undesired incidents. "We have taken a zero tolerance approach to even the simplest of crimes, so we will be handcuffing criminals right there in the streets for everyone to see so they serve as an example to others," he said. He also noted that plain clothes police officers have been placed on the streets to help in the fight against criminal activity . "We have packed the place with plain clothed officers, even inspectors," he said.

THREE of them were under 20, and the other just 21.

It was not clear last night why they were shot dead, but about 9:00 pm Monday the four youngsters - two of them brothers - all lay dead after a brutal attack by heavily armed men in the sleepy district of Industry Village in rural St Andrew.

Five more murders were also reported between Monday night and yesterday afternoon - pushing the country's murder toll to 151 in only 36 days of the year.

Among that five was a woman who was allegedly stabbed to death by her common-law husband in Dunbeholden, a poor community near Greater Portmore in St Catherine.

In the other incidents, a man was fatally shot at North Parade in downtown Kingston, which also saw the injury of two other men, while a peanut vendor was shot and killed at his home in Primrose Lane, St James. Also, a man was shot dead in Rockfort, a tough community in eastern Kingston, while a man was stabbed to death in Brandon Hill, rural St Andrew.

The dead in the Industry Village attack were identified as Wayne Morris, 17; Orane Williams, 16, and his brother Anthony Williams, 21, all of Industry Village; and Romeo Webber, 19, of Waterford in St Catherine.

According to the police, Morris, Webber and the elder Williams were playing dominoes on the verandah of a house in the community when several armed men crept up to the building and opened fire, killing the three on the spot.

The armed men, the police reported, then turned their weapons on the younger Williams who was just returning from a shop in the area. The injured Orane Williams, the police said, ran off and jumped from a bridge in the community where he fell to his death.

"Is years me up here and me never see anything like this yet. Right now me frighten," a resident of Industry Village told the Observer yesterday morning, as he described how the three men were seen sprawled out in *lo** on the verandah.
Another resident said the shootings could be a 'protest' by armed men in the area against frequent visits from 'unfamiliar' persons.

"The man dem probably get suspicious when them see new man in the area. Probably think them (the deceased) bringing in new man pon dem," the resident claimed.

It was not clear if the man from Waterford who was
killed in the attack was hiding in the area. Waterford, a tough section of the Portmore municipality, has in recent years been plagued
by violence.

Meanwhile, the police reported yesterday that 41-year-old Marleen Douglas, also called 'Mollo', was stabbed and killed at her home in Dunbeholden, St Catherine just before dawn yesterday.

Police have since arrested her common-law husband. His name was not released.

The others murdered between Monday night and yesterday were identified as:

. Larry Edwards, 31- shot dead at his gate in Primrose, St James Monday night.

. Ochoy Lennon of Brae Street, Kingston - shot and killed in downtown Kingston. Two other persons were injured in that incident after gunmen launched an attack near the intersection of Chancery Lane and North Parade Monday night.

. Conroy Findlay, 35 - chopped to death in Brandon Hill, St Andrew yesterday and

. Nathaniel Williams, 33 - shot dead in Rockfort, Kingston on Monday.

In the meantime, the St James police reported that a badly decomposed body was found at Cornwall Court in the parish yesterday. The body was clad in a pair of green pants, a multi-coloured shirt and a pair of blue and white sneakers.
Tek Weh Yuh Self, the anthem that created a frenzy in the Dancehalls, is back with a vengeance. This time around, the unconquerable Mr. Vegas has joined forces with Hip Hop Queen Lil Kim and Latin singing sensation Kat Deluna to unleash the songs fiery remix Tek Weh Yuhself Again. CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TRACK

mr_vegas.jpgThe remix has been transformed into a multicultural fusion of hip hop, soca, and dancehall, with a dash of Spanish flavor. Incorporating the eclectic musical styles of Lil Kim and Kat Deluna yield a perfect blend, Mr. Vegas said with enthusiasm. Their strong presence makes this remix a perfect cross over hit --destined to rock the dance floor and the music industry on a whole.

The collaboration came about through the initiative of Mr. Cee of New Yorks famed Hot 97 radio station. Both international recording artistes Kim and Kat were extremely excited to work on the project, passionately adding extra verses that they thought would bring the fire.

Kat Deluna is no stranger to collaborating with Dancehall artists, as she teamed up with Elephant Man in 2007 to create her hit single Whine Up. The song ultimately reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart. Hip Hop veteran Lil Kim has also been a notable hit maker over the years and is an avid dancehall and reggae fan often integrating their elements into her music.

Everyone on Mr. Vegas team is thrilled about the remix and its possibilities. The remix is catchy and comes with a whole heap of vibes, added Vegas.

Tek Weh Yuhself Again, which was recorded in New York, has already experienced some buzz and will soon be heard on airwaves throughout the Caribbean and U.S. A music video for the sizzlin track is in the works and should be released in early 2008.

The single Hot Wuk, from Mr. Vegas latest album Hot It Up, gained tremendous international airplay, reaching as far as #58 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs Billboard Chart.  There is no do doubt that this remix will exceed expectations.
Though the Wailers were popular in Jamaica, it was not until the group signed with Chris Blackwell's Island Records in the early 1970s that they found an international audience. After Catch a Fire (1972) and Burnin' (1973), Marley raised eyebrows but it was not until May 10, 1975 that he gained commercial success when his Natty Dread became the first album by Marley and the Wailers to make the U.S. charts, reaching #92.

On May 13, 1976, 'Rastaman Vibration,' by Bob Marley and the Wailers -and featuring an American, Don Kinsey, on lead guitar - was released. It became Marley's highest-charting album, reaching #8 in the U.S. and #15 in the U.K.

Marley was on his way to international stardom, but life would throw him a curve ball when there was an unsuccessful assassination attempt back in his homeland of Jamaica. When intruders entered the Marley compound on December 3, 1976, two days before the historic 'Smile Jamaica' peace concert at the National Stadium, little did the players in that early morning drama know that they would set in motion a series of events that would propel Bob Marley into the international spotlight. Though Bob and Rita Marley were grazed by bullets, they electrified a crowd of 80,000 people when both took to the stage with the Wailers on the 5th - a gesture of survival that only heightened Marley's legend.

In fact, he was so influential a cultural icon at that time in Jamaica that Time magazine proclaimed in an editorial that, "He rivals the government as a political force."

Still, the assassination attempt scarred him physically and emotionally. In a SUN newspaper article dated February 10, 1978, Bob Marley was quoted as saying: 'That shooting may be the best thing that ever happened to me. It forced me to leave Jamaica. I still can't go back because the men who tried to kill me have never been arrested. They might try again.'

After the shooting in '76, Marley went into a 14-month period of exile, and a period of intense creativity during which the albums, 'Exodus' (1977), the brilliant 'Survival'(1979) released at a time of great political turbulence and social unrest in Africa, were unleashed on an unsuspecting world. At the historic 'One Love Peace Concert' on April 21, 1978 on the 12th anniversary of Haile Selassie's visit to Jamaica, his popularity grew. He convinced JLP leader Edward Seaga and late former Prime Minister of Jamaica, Michael Manley to shake hands. Later, he was summoned to the United Nations in New York and given a UN Peace Medal.

However, the fearsome hoofbeats of doom soon thundered into Marleys life. In 1977, surgeons removed part of a toe that had been injured in a soccer game, upon which a cancerous growth was found. This led to the discovery of spreading cancer in 1980, after Marley collapsed while jogging in Central Park. The cancer would claim his life less than a year later, but not without a fight.

According to the book 'Chanting Down Babylon', in April 1980 Marley was invited to headline the Independence celebrations in Zimbabwe. He was the only performer on the main stage that night, squadrons of jets screamed overhead and 21 cannons were fired. Thousands of freedom fighters broke down the gates to enter the Harare National Stadium as he sang 'Zimbabwe', from the album 'Survival'.'

On September 21, 1980, Bob Marley performed the final show of his career, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The tour's remaining dates were canceled as Marley sought treatment for his spreading cancers. Marley was buried on the island with full state honors on May 21, 1981.

Here's a list of his international influences: Johnny Nash re-recorded 'Stir It 'in 1971, and it hit the UK charts in '72. Amnesty International used the single 'Get Up, Stand Up' as its anthem, features Peter Tosh on vocals. Another Marley creation, 'I Shot the Sheriff', was recorded by the legendary rock/blues guitarist Eric Clapton and gave Clapton his first number one US single. The anti-racist 'War', with lyrics taken from a speech by Emperor Haile Selassie made in California on February 28, 1978 became an unofficial anthem of the guerrilla fighters in South Africa.

On October 4, 1980, Stevie Wonder's tribute to Bob Marley, the reggaefied "Master Blaster (Jammin')," entered the singles charts, eventually topping the R&B chart for seven weeks and peaking at #5 on the pop chart.

Chairman of AIC Limited and the National Commercial Bank, Michael Lee Chin, has committed an additional $105 million for the completion of the Hyacinth Chen School of Nursing at the Seventh-day Adventist-owned and operated Northern Caribbean University (NCU).

Of this amount, $35 million will help to subsidise the cost overrun, which includes building materials and labour costs, while the remaining $70 million has been secured for furnishing and equipping the building.

A release from NCU said the nursing school, which is named in honour of Lee Chin's mother, is being built on a 21,000-square foot area of the NCU property, opposite the university's main campus in Mandeville, Manchester. This latest contribution comes after Lee Chin's initial donation of $142 million toward the construction of the state-of-the-art facility.

Commitment

This most recent commitment was made at a special meeting of Lee Chin and NCU President, Dr Herbert Thompson, held to discuss the progress of construction on the nursing school which began in May last year. The nursing school, which will officially open on August 10, will accommodate approximately 800 nursing students; this represents a 100 per cent increase over current NCU enrollment of nursing students.

Lee Chin has indicated that his choice to invest specifically in a nursing school was driven by the world renowned reputation of Jamaican nurses who are celebrated both locally and overseas. He said that, as a prudent investor, he is expecting a good return on this social investment as he has recognised the exportability of Jamaica's nurses, who are able to work abroad and send remittances back to Jamaica.

Jamaica's murder rate continues to soar

jam-flag2007.jpgWe have just closed out the first month of the New Year and already the figures for crime are looking quite ominous. Instead of crime going on the decrease it is skyrocketing. Just one month and already over 100 murders have been committed.

Last year will go down in the books as one of the *lo**iest year the country has seen.

The murder rate for 2007 surpassed the previous year's total, this according to police reports.

Data received indicated there were 1,574 murders in 2007, a 17 percent rise from 2006. Of those murdered last year, 19 were members of the police force while 146 were women with 65 being children.

There were 82 double murders, 10 triple murders and five quadruple murders. Most of the murders - 79 percent - were committed by guns while most of the homicides were committed in the inner city communities of Olympic Gardens, Waterhouse, Drewsland, Seaview Gardens, Riverton City, and sections of Maxfield Avenue. November was the *lo**iest with 166 persons murdered within that 30-day period.

Throughout last year there were several initiatives implemented to stop the rising surge of crime with little success. DCP Shield at one point revealed that they would be targeting hot spot areas in every division in Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine...still the figures rise.

Some policemen are now beginning to cry out for the death penalty in an effort to send a serious message to criminals. Will it prove to be a deterrent? That is anyone's guess...still...YardFlex hopes that good sense will prevail and our country can truly go back to its slogan and mean it...come home to paradise.

Six killed in two crashes

Two car crashes in western Jamaica on the weekend claimed the lives of six persons.

In the first accident two men were killed and another injured when their car crashed. Dead are Jason Marshall, 25 and Stokey Wilson, both of Thompson Street, Montego Bay. Injured is Dwayne Panton 22, a security officer of Hart Street, Montego Bay.

Police say at 10 p.m., Panton was driving a 1996 red Toyota Corolla motor car registered 1808 FE with Marshall and Wilson aboard. On reaching a section of the roadway, Panton lost control of the car which crashed into a wall. All three received serious injuries and were taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where Marshall and Wilson died. The Barrett Town police are investigating.

Meanwhile the Green Island police are theorising that excessive speeding was the cause of an accident that killed four persons.

The four died after their car crashed on the Industry Cove main road yesterday.

Dead are Navado Grant, 26, Starri Leslie, 23, Jodi-Gaye Wellington, 20 and Donna Swearing, 36, all from Lances Bay, Hanover.

The CCN's Liaison Officer for Hanover says shortly before 4:00 a.m., the four were returning from a party in Grange Hill, West-moreland in a green Toyota Corolla motor car driven by Grant. On reaching a section of the main road, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which slammed into a retaining wall.

The occupants sustained multiple injuries and died on the spot. Firemen from the Lucea Fire Department assisted in cutting the bodies from the wreckage.

**Kartel Freed Of All Charges**

findImg.php?pic_size=200&table_name=news_img_tab&table_field=img_id&img_id=1179 Leader of the Portmore Empire, Vybz Kartel was today cleared of all charges when he appeared before the courts to answer his case of indecent language and behaviour in a public domain.

Kartel, whose real name is Adijah Palmer, was arrested in Ocho Rios, St. Ann last month for reportedly using expletives during his performance at the Amnesia Night Club, where he and members of his entourage celebrated his Birthday.

The Ocho Rios Police said despite numerous warnings to cease and desist, the deejay continued to use foul language during his set forcing them to slap him with the charges.

However at todays hearing, Kartel pleaded guilty and expressed regret, while blaming his bad behaviour on having too much to drink. He said he would like to apologize to the public, the lawmen and the magistrate for his actions. His apology was accepted and the charges admonished.

Later in the day members of the mzjaradio.com teamed tried to contact the deejay for a comment, but our efforts proved futile.
Once again Sheldon Lawrence more popularly known as Aidona and Adidjah Palmer aka Vybz Kartel have found themselves on the wrong side of the law.

Earlier today members of Operation Kingfish issued a statement saying they wanted both men for questioning regarding a photograph which contains the two entertainer and two other men posing with several high powered weapons.

According to Inspector Steve Brown, Spokesman for Operation Kingfish, "We are eager to speak with these two gentlemen, and we want to do so in the presence of their lawyers so they can indicate to us how the weapons came into their possession."

He further added that "Checks by our team has revealed that neither of the two entertainers are valid licensed firearm holders. So it is imperative that we conduct an interview with them".

Just days earlier Aidonia was released on bail after he was implicated in an alleged shooting incident in the vicinity of Shortwood road, that saw several persons being injured and one man getting killed. That case is still before the courts.

BEENIE'S TRIANGLE OF INTRIGUE
BeenieMan_Barbee.jpgThings between Beenie, Barbee and D'Angel appear to be getting increasingly heated. At the Youth View awards over the weekend, Beenie and Barbee performed together but when Beenie attempted to deejay a song about D'Angel, she got up and waved her hands in animated disagreement, and then boos rang out. Sources close to the deejay say however that it was D'Angel's supporters who were booing, and they were in turn booed by the teens who were upset that Beenie's performance was being interrupted. Who knows what to believe? It is clear that Beenie and Barbee are in a relationship despite their repeated denials, and a popular tabloid recently reported that the two had been having verbal arguments. Maybe it is just bad karma, or worse SCIENCE!

QUESTION
A who mi hear a drive up the Range Rover wah did trade in?
An obese woman has criticised staff at Northampton General Hospital for their reluctance to use an ambulance to take her home.
Margaret Brayley, 57, is wheelchair-bound and was admitted to hospital more than two weeks ago to be treated for a bladder infection and cellulitis.

Doctors assessed her and decided she was fit to be discharged a week ago, but since then she has been locked in an argument with hospital staff over whether or not she could be taken home by ambulance.

Mrs Brayley, said: "I went to hospital last year and they took me home by ambulance but they wouldn't do it this year because they said I was a risk.

"They said they didn't have the proper facilities for someone big to go in an ambulance. I thought they would arrange transport.

"The last time I was in hospital they got a special ambulance to take me home in a stretcher and they took me upstairs and put me to bed."

Mrs Brayley, who weighs 25 stone, added: "This time I've had nothing but problems all the way along. I didn't know what to do. They said I should move into a bungalow."

After a week's wrangling, a crew of paramedic staff took Mrs Brayley home in an ambulance.

She said: "I had to go in with a walking frame and then sit in my chair in the ambulance. I've been told if I go to hospital again they won't take me home in an ambulance."

An NGH spokesman said that a multidisciplinary team had been working very hard to make arrangements for Mrs Brayley to be discharged, since she was assessed as medically fit more than a week ago.

The hospital said six ambulance staff, including one risk assessor and another from NGH, were used to transfer Mrs Brayley home.

A spokesman for East Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We hope that Margaret understands that the delay in getting her home from hospital has arisen because we needed to make sure we had the right equipment, the right vehicle and the right staff available to move and transport her safely.

"This is not only for the patient's safety but also for the safety of all of our staff involved in the transfer."

113 murders in first 27 days

January 31, 2008
Started By ZJSnyper10 Comments

A total of 113 people were murdered in the first 27 days of this year, police statistics have shown.

It was, however, 16 less than the 129 murders recorded for the corresponding period last year.

Seven women and three men were among the 113 deaths, which included four double killings.

Most of the murders, 17, took place in the St Catherine North Police Division, while the parishes of Clarendon and St James saw 14 and nine persons being murdered, respectively, while 12 murders were recorded in the St Andrew South Division.

In the meantime, there have been six fatal police shootings up to January 27, compared to nine in January 2007. Two persons were also fatally shot by licensed firearm holders.

findImg.php?pic_size=200&table_name=news_img_tab&table_field=img_id&img_id=1175 Ace Bembe selector Jigsy seem to be trodding a lonely path in his crusade against Portmore Empire's front man Vybz Kartel, whom he has vowed never to play another song for during his lifetime as a selector.

The selector who recently made the announcement has once again gone public this time extending the boycott to include members of the Portmore Empire, after he heard several mixtapes featuring it's members taking lyrical swipes at him.

According to Jigsy he is sticking to his guns, even though he is not getting the support of fellow selectors, but base on reports from dancehall insiders, some are afraid and others are just trying to remain neutral instead of taking sides and fueling the war.

In the words of one popular disc jock "Dancehall is a mutual game an so there has to be an understanding between everyone, radio jocks, selectors and the artistes as they all need each other for the craft to thrive".

In a quest to find out what other members of the fraternity thought about Jigsy's stance we posed the question to several popular selectors all of whom declined to comment on the issue and from the observation made by 876radio.com, there seems to be some underlying fear of possible reprisal.

Kartel in a recent interview has publicly denied any involvement in the incident earlier this year that saw Jigsy allegedly being gun butted and ruffed up by men said to be aligned to the deejay.

Altiman Whyte and his children - Nickeisha, 23; Lorna, 10, and Sylvia - were a picture of grief near the bereaved father's fruit stall in Flankers yesterday.

FLANKERS, St James - Nothing could have prepared family members and friends for the gruesome deaths of brothers, Anthony Whyte, seven, and Romeo Whyte, five, who were Tuesday evening swept out of their mother's arms by a hit-and-run driver as they attempted to cross the main road here.

The children's mother, 45-year-old Belva Phillips, also received injuries in the accident. She was treated at the Cornwall Regional Hospital.

According to Constable Richam Davis, the Constabulary Communication Network's (CCN) liaison officer for St James, at approximately 6:15 pm on Tuesday, Phillips, who was accompanied by three of her 12 children and a grandchild, was attempting to cross the Flankers main road when the two little ones were hit by a Nissan motorcar which allegedly overtook a line of traffic.

Constable Davis reported the woman and the children had just got off a bus and were in the process of crossing the street, after a motorist stopped to allow them to cross, when they were hit.

The incident attracted a large crowd and triggered a long build-up of traffic as community members and passersby alike converged on the scene to get a peek at the *lo**-drenched bodies of the two brothers who attended the Flankers Primary and Junior High and Providence Basic School, respectively, sprawled along the roadway.

Several people wept openly at the scene. The boys' father, Altiman Whyte, a 70-year-old fruit vendor, collapsed on the scene after seeing the motionless, mutilated bodies of his young sons.

"Me drop down up there last night, me couldn't stay. Me daughter dem carry me home last night me couldn't stomach to see how two little boys how them mash up. Lord God! I don't know where the man (driver) him no stop and nothing," wailed the distressed father yesterday. "I don't know what going happen. I can't explain. Those two kids I love them, I miss them ever so much, I don't know what going happen to me. I don't know when this going come outa me."

The distraught father, who is also the Phillips' common-law husband, said the tragedy struck after members of his family were returning home after leaving the nearby Sandals Montego Bay Hotel where they usually receive free meals.
The tearful Whyte said they were transported from the hotel by one of the hotel's buses.

".As the bus man drop her off, a car give her the right-away fe come across. I hear that a car lick the two boys out of her hands, and she get a lick on her right foot," said the grief-stricken Whyte.

Whyte yesterday urged the National Works Agency to install traffic lights at the North Coast Highway's intersection with Flankers.

".Jesus Christ Almighty God, man it needs something fe check them quality speed. Oh God Almighty man, member say people live in the area you know, is not a place where wild cow live. Lord God Almighty anybody, even big people it could a happen to," said Whyte.

Jamie Lynn Spears' baby sacrifice

Jamie Lynn Spears has agreed to give her unborn baby to her mother Lynne so she can focus on her career, it has been claimed.

Jamie Lynn Spears has agreed to give up her unborn baby, it has been claimed.

The 16-year-old star of Nickelodeon show 'Zoey 101' will reportedly give the child to her mother Lynne as soon as it is born, so she can focus on her career.

A source told America's Star magazine: "After several weeks of personal soul searching and talks and discussions with her mom, Jamie Lynn reluctantly agreed that giving up the baby is the right thing to do.

"Lynne says Jamie doesn't understand the lifelong consequences of having a baby. She wants Jamie Lynn to continue her show business career after the baby is born and Jamie Lynn also realises she wants to enjoy her teenage years without the responsibilities of caring for a baby.

"Jamie Lynn will be back at work and trying to remind people of her talent and not that she is an unwed teenage mother."

Lynne will raise the baby at the family home in Kentwood, Louisiana, away from the Hollywood spotlight.

Since Jamie Lynn announced her pregnancy she has been living at the family's $3 million estate while studying for a high school equivalency exam and attending parenting classes. But it is believed once she gives birth she will return to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career.

Jamie Lynn, the younger sister of Britney Spears, insists her 18-year-old boyfriend Casey Aldridge is the father of her baby. However, insiders claim the father is actually a much older TV executive from her show.

A source said: "Jamie Lynn has been working on her show 'Zoey 101' since she was 13. In Hollywood, little girls grow up fast and she's no exception. With everything that has gone on in her family, she needed someone to look up to.

"But the man she found seems to have completely taken advantage of her."

A representative for Jamie Lynn denied she plans to give up her baby.

Brick and Lace told of how 'Love is Wicked' and brought some back-up dancers along to bring home the point.
If you were over 21 years old you might have felt a little too old to be at the Youth View Awards after party held at the Cuddyz in New Kingston on Saturday night.
This party definitely stuck to the theme of young, hot and hype as it was mostly attended by teenagers. The females were dressed in raunchy outfits and the young men were dapper in the blazers or the popular Ed Hardy wear. It seemed to be an occasion for the teens to socialise and that they did for most of the time.
Roll out
Though preoccupied with greeting each other they found the time to 'roll out' with the latest dance moves. Their aim was made much easier as DJ Chris was versed on the latest songs and kept them on their feet as he played tunes like Party Like A Rock Star, Sensual Seduction and Back It Up. The girls wined as low as possible while the boys displayed the very latest dance moves like 'Gully Creeper', 'Chiney Kay', 'To the World' and 'Boasty Bounce'.
After DJ Chris completed part of his set, the party animal of FAME FM Kurt Riley took the turntables. He had the patrons jumping and waving to the soca songs. During this time there was a four-person congo line running around the venue. He smoothly glided back to dancehall with Beenie Man's Dude and Back It Up while Aidonia told them about their Ukku.

He's not just 'young, hot and hype' but very lucky. Voicemail member Oniel strolled into the praty in style with two lovely ladies by his side. - Peta-Gaye Clachar photos

The dance floor was quickly cleared by Queen Ifrika's Daddy and Etana's Meditation. Some life was regained to the party though when DJ Chris unleashed Bugle's Exercise and Journey.
He went on to play hip-hop songs like Bartender, Icebox and No One. It was at this time that American Actress Essence Atkins who hosted the Youth View Awards started dancing with one of the members of Shady Squad.
They paved the way for the live performances that were expected by the patrons. Voicemail started the segment and gave a decent performance before they introduced Christopher Martin who had the ladies screaming. Brick and Lace took the stage next and told the females that Love Is Wicked on a soca beat.
It was Young, Hot and Hype Male of the Year Busy Signal who gave the best performance at the party. He had both men and women almost joining him on stage to sing songs like Jail, Step Out and Pon Di Edge. He even gave them a taste of his new single Curfew.
The patrons started exiting the party at around 2:15 a.m. which led to the eventual end of the party.

New mum unlawfully killed

February 5, 2008

A NEW mother was unlawfully killed when an epidural drug was mistakenly fed into her arm via an intravenous drip, an inquest jury found today.

Filipino theatre nurse Mayra Cabrera, 30, died shortly after giving birth to son Zac, who survived, at Great Western Hospital (GWH) in Swindon, Wiltshire, on May 11, 2004.

Husband Arnel Cabrera said he wants the Crown Prosecution Service to prosecute the midwife for manslaughter.

After the inquest Mr Cabrera said in statement: Mayra was my love and my life. On 11 May 2004 we were overjoyed when our son, Zac, was born. However our life together was ripped apart by the action of a midwife who failed to check the fluid she gave to my wife.

She had six opportunities to check this fluid. Had she done so, Mayra would have been alive today.

The midwifes failure to accept responsibility or show any remorse for her actions has made me very bitter and angry. I cannot forgive her and now hope that the police and Crown Prosecution Service will prosecute her for manslaughter

Following the delivery, Bupivacaine, a potent epidural anaesthetic, was wrongly fed into a vein in her hand - if given at all it should have gone into the space of her spinal cord.

The jury said gross negligence by Swindon & Marlborough NHS Trust, specifically sub-standard storage of drugs in the maternity unit, had led to the death.

The jury foreman, returning the verdict, said: Mayra Cabrera was killed unlawfully - gross negligence/manslaughter - storage and administration.

Baby hurled from blazing flat out of third-floor window is caught by policeman

This is the dramatic moment when a two-year-old child was thrown from a third floor window after a suspected arson attack in flats in Germany.

As a police officer edged along the ledge to try to help the people trapped inside, the parents attempt to save their youngster in the most radical way.

Escape: One person edges along a ledge, top left, as the child (ringed) was thrown from the smoke-engulfed flats in Ludwigshafen, southern Germany. It is feared the blaze was started by neo-Nazis

The child was seen falling through the smoke...to be caught safely in the hands of waiting policemen nearly 40 feet below.

But at least nine other people - five of them children - were not so lucky and perished in the fire which devastated the old house where 52 people lived in the southern city of Ludwigshafen.

Terrifying sight: The young baby hurtles towards the ground from the third-floor window

A further 60 people were injured in the fire, some of them seriously, which broke out at 4.30pm yesterday afternoon.

At least two more people are expected to die from their burns. Many Turkish families lived in the block, prompting fears that neo-Nazis may have torched it.

Police have formed a special commission to determine the cause of the blaze.

The toddler seen was one of two thrown to safety from the four storey building into the arms of policemen.

Agonising: The family watch helplessly and hope the two-year-old is caught safely

It remains unclear whether their parents escaped the flames and smoke.

Cushions and pillows were piled into the streets below as people cut off from the burning stairwell were urged to jump.

At one stage firemen smashed in through a second floor window to rescue a four-year-old child totally black from smoke. He was treated in hospital and will survive. The fire broke out in the first floor of the four-storey building on Danzigplatz.

The flats were filled with Sunday afternoon visitors calling on friends and relations who wanted a view of a carnival street festival attended by 250,000 people in the old centre of the city. "Anyone caught in that backdraft was incinerated in seconds."

Rescue: A boy is handed to safety as scared residents, mostly immigrants, make their way onto the balconies. It is feared the arson attack was carried out by neo-Nazis

Flames burst from windows and within half an hour the roof had caved in on the inhabitants trapped inside.

"The old wooden stairwell acted like a chimmney, drawing flames two metres in height upwards like a blast furnace," said a fire brigade spokesman.

Police were forced to evacuate old houses on either side of the fire for fear that the flames would spread.

By this morning the building was a blackened, gutted shell in danger of collapse.

Eva Lohse, the mayor of Ludwigshafen, stood before the smoking ruins last night with tears streaming down her face.

Police said they fear finding more bodies trapped inside

A TWO-year-old British girl was this morning in hospital in Cyprus after being served detergent mixed with orange juice.

Doctors said Annabelle Rhodes, who was on a family holiday, was in "critical but stable" condition.

The incident happened at the four-star Curium Palace hotel on Saturday evening. Annabelle suffered internal burns to her mouth, throat and upper respiratory organs and has been connected to a respirator.

Medics at the hospital warned she could suffer some permanent damage.

Head of paediatrics at Makarios children's hospital Andreas Hadjidemtriou said the girl was put on a tube because her upper breathing channels had closed.

"From here on in we have to wait and see the consequences of this incident on the little girl," said Hadjidemetriou.

The mistake occurred when the 55-year-old father Mark ordered a watered-down orange squash for his daughter from the hotel bar.

Police believe a plastic water bottle was refilled with the detergent and left in the kitchen without any note warning staff of its content.

"It appears the barman used a container which he thought contained water but was in fact dishwasher detergent, " said a police spokeswoman.

"We are treating this as an accident as the person wasn't to know there was a different liquid in the plastic water bottle, " she added.

However, police have not ruled out making any arrests on the grounds of negligence. Mark Rhodes declined to comment saying:"This is a very personal matter please leave us alone," is all he could say.

The odourless and colourless liquid consumed has been sent to a state laboratory for testing but reports suggested it was nitric acid.

The party was hosted by the Jamaica Tourist Board.

Sean who has been in the island since early last week, partied with friends, family, fans and tourism officials at the Sunset Jamaica Grande hotel. The event was filmed by a crew from MTV and will be aired on MTV celebrity birthday series.

Seans entry was by sea on an exotic catamaran dancing to the sounds from the Renaissance Disco whose selection of Welcome to Jamrock was most appropriate for such an event. Sean then touched down onto the ground and made his entry to the poolside which was exquisitely decorated prancing to Party like a Rockstar.

Tourism Minister Edmond Bartlett and Carole Guntley-Brady presented Sean with a large portrait of himself after which Minister Ed. Bartlett gave a small welcome speech and highlighted the fact that Sean was an ambassador for Jamaica through his music worldwide.

Sean then gave a small reply speech but was eager to begin his super 18 birthday celebrations not before paying his respects to all his friends and family that have supported him throughout his journey. Sean made it clear to everyone about his Jamaican roots and that he was born and raised in Ocho Rios. He also made it known that he is the grandson of the late sound system operator and producer, Jack Ruby.

The party got underway with entertainment from the MOB and First Class dancers. Sean joined them and tried to learn the latest Jamaican dance moves. Other performances came from Cherine Anderson who serenaded Sean. Seans label mates The Dey performed and Shaggy as the guest of honour who performed his smash hits Mr. b***booobastic and Church Heathen. Christopher Martin performing with Shaggy gave his Jamaican Girls something to scream about.

The cutting of Seans cake was an elegant affair. The cake which was carried by four beautiful ladies dressed in gra**c*at skirts. Sean cut the cake, which had a picture of himself and was decorated in the colours of the Jamaican flag with his Father Papa Kingston. Sean acknowledge the fact that his mother who was his main support was not able to make the celebrations but was surprised by the MTV crew who were able to deliver a pre-recorded message from his mother giving birthday wishes. Seans Mother had some words of encouragement for her son before unveiling his birthday gift which was a Bentley.

His aunt who was on hand to witness the celebrations presented Sean with a custom made Louis Vitton sunshade. Executives from Epic/Sony Music presented Sean with a plaque commemorating record sales in excess of 7 million albums, ringtones and singles.

Following the presentations Renaissance Disco then cranked up the music and put the party in high gear with the latest in dance hall tunes which had patrons rocking. Among the guests present were DJ Envy and DJ Demerio a close friend of Sean who came to celebrate with him; and Jamaican born actress, model and singer Grace Jones.

The after party continued at Oceans 11, one of Ocho Rioss happening spots and Sean could be seen jamming to the latest dancehall rhythms and mingling with the crowd and representing Jamaica to the fullest extent. It seemed that the night could not be spent in one location as the party continued at Marguritaville into the wee hours of the morning.

No one is quite sure exactly who Valentine was.  There are at least three and possible eight different Valentines claimed to be the real romantic.  The three most likely Valentines were all church martyrs.  One was killed with a group of believers and the other two, a priest of Rome and a Bishop of Interamna, beheaded by Emperor Claudius II in 269 A.D.  The remains of one of the Valentines is said to be in the church of St. Praxedes in Rome.

There are several legends regarding Valentine.  He was said to have been imprisoned and while there, cured the jailer's daughter from blindness.  Yet another story has him falling in love with the jailer's daughter sending her a letter signed "from your Valentine."   However the most likely origin of Valentine's day goes back to the Roman Lupercalia, a feast celebrating the God Lupercus.  During that feast, young women would put their names into a box from which young men would draw.  This matchmaking process would then enamor the two youth until the next year.  Associating the matchmaking feast with the martyrdom of Valentine was convenient because the days were almost identical.

Sending love notes on
Valentines Day occurred much later.  Charles Duc d' Orleans, while imprisoned in the Tower of London, supposedly wrote amorous poems and letters to his wife in 1415.  Valentine love notes gradually increased in popularity until their mechanization in 1840.  Since 1840, Valentine Cards have become tremendously popular all over the world.

Students at a high school in Manchester are still being counselled and prayed for after more than 20 of them were possessed by demons last week.

The two-day long ordeal involved several hours of prayer for the students who had demons speaking through them in an African language. Some of the students even attempted deadly stunts such as jumping in front of vehicles and trying to jump through windows.

Normality was finally restored to the institution after the affected students who ranged from first to fifth form were baptised.

According to students who witnessed the possession, it all started last Thursday while they were having morning devotion service. "We were having devotions, then we heard a loud screaming. The lady (conducting the devotions) stopped what she was saying and started praying," a student told THE STAR.

Afterwards, another student is said to have been heard screaming and this continued in a ripple effect. The affected students started to run around and had to be restrained by teachers.

The rest of the student population that was not affected was sent back to their classrooms while a prayer service began for those affected. However, the students continued to act out.

"One of my friends told me that she going to jump through the window. The security locked the gate and one of the girls climbed over and was standing in the middle of the road. A big trailer was coming and a pastor had to get her out of the way," the student said.

Prayer sessions

As for the student who wanted to jump through the window, the source said that the security had to lock her in a room to restrain her. In addition, the demons, speaking through a student, are reported to have said that they (pastors) can't save her because they (demons) have already saved her.

On Friday, despite the long prayer sessions the day before, some of the students still returned with the possession. This time the school administration chose a different method, that of baptising all the affected students.

During the baptism, however, one of the demon-possessed students allegedly screamed several times as they were baptised. "Every time they go down in the water, she scream out and when it was her time to baptise, she take a long time to go under the water and when she come up she just take up her bag and go home. We haven't seen her since," a student said.

Several attempts by the STAR to get a comment from the school principal about the incident were unsuccessful. Meanwhile Charlene Ashley, director of communications at the Ministry, said they would look into the matter.

SINGER Amy Winehouse took a break from rehab today to apply for a US visa.

The Back To Black star left her London clinic for a few hours to meet officials at the US Embassy.

She was also accompanied by a nurse as the terms of her treatment mean she must remain under supervision at all times.

Her father, Mitch, was also by her side.

Dressed in a white skirt and polka dot top, and with her trademark beehive in place, the 24-year-old looked healthier than she has done in recent weeks.

She was admitted to the Capio Nightingale clinic in north London on January 24, days after a video emerged showing her apparently smoking crack cocaine.

Obtaining a US visa would allow Winehouse to attend the Grammys in Los Angeles on February 10, where she is nominated for six awards.

But the application process will not be simple due to her drugs record. Last October she was arrested and fined in Norway for possession of cannabis.

A spokesman for the star said no decision had been made on whether or not she will attend the awards ceremony.

The appointment at the US Embassy was made some time ago and was part of process for obtaining a visa. No decision has been made about the Grammys.

Amy was accompanied by a nurse as the appointment was under supervision. She has not left rehab and remains under the care of the clinic, the spokesman said.

  LEARNING COLOGNE BASICS
by @ 01/26

cologne1.gif
Cologne can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Most men make the mistake of thinking they need to choose a single scent for themselves. The truth is modern colognes enhance your sartorial decisions and add dimension to the way you present yourself to the world. Therefore, just as you have more than one pair of shoes, you should have more than one scent to call upon.

Knowing cologne basics so that you choose the right scent for the right occasion is, perhaps, the most underrated of skills. If you choose wisely and apply sparingly, only a few people will know and appreciate your olfactory considerations. Choose poorly and apply liberally and youll saunter through the day leaving expensive contrails of eau de too much behind you as others hold their breath.

So, be an expert scent wearer by following our guide to cologne basics.

cologne faq

Where to wear it?
Wearing cologne to work is generally acceptable, but cologne almost becomes a necessary fashion accessory when going out at night. A light citrus-based scent is perfect for an afternoon outing, but a special evening out calls for a stronger scent with spice undertones or musky notes that will mix with your own natural pheromones.

Where to spray it?
Cologne basics stipulate that applying cologne strategically is more important than you think. A little under each ear ensures that a woman leaning in close to talk will take note of your scent. Your face and chin are the obvious spots, but your chest is the best location for the cologne to mix with your own natural scent and slowly make itself known as it wafts toward your collar.

When to wear it?
Youll need more than one cologne since what you apply for the daylight hours simply wont meet the mood and atmosphere of the night. A light citrus scent or woods-based scent are perfect for daytime activities, like work. Nighttime, however, requires a scent with deeper mystery. Thus, youll want to use a cologne with spicy notes or a musk-based scent.

How much to wear?
Treat your cologne as a secret you share with only a few people -- or at least those within your close personal space. Apply a very sparse amount under each ear and on your torso. You may not think this is enough, but cologne actually mixes with your body and intensifies over time. Far too many men make the mistake of applying more because they cannot smell it when they first spray it on, or they shake out a palm full because think they need more. The truth is: A well-chosen cologne applied in small amounts will get your more attention than if you bathed in it.
