Chairman of AIC Limited and the National Commercial Bank, Michael Lee Chin, has committed an additional $105 million for the completion of the Hyacinth Chen School of Nursing at the Seventh-day Adventist-owned and operated Northern Caribbean University (NCU).
Of this amount, $35 million will help to subsidise the cost overrun, which includes building materials and labour costs, while the remaining $70 million has been secured for furnishing and equipping the building.
A release from NCU said the nursing school, which is named in honour of Lee Chin's mother, is being built on a 21,000-square foot area of the NCU property, opposite the university's main campus in Mandeville, Manchester. This latest contribution comes after Lee Chin's initial donation of $142 million toward the construction of the state-of-the-art facility.
Commitment
This most recent commitment was made at a special meeting of Lee Chin and NCU President, Dr Herbert Thompson, held to discuss the progress of construction on the nursing school which began in May last year. The nursing school, which will officially open on August 10, will accommodate approximately 800 nursing students; this represents a 100 per cent increase over current NCU enrollment of nursing students.
Lee Chin has indicated that his choice to invest specifically in a nursing school was driven by the world renowned reputation of Jamaican nurses who are celebrated both locally and overseas. He said that, as a prudent investor, he is expecting a good return on this social investment as he has recognised the exportability of Jamaica's nurses, who are able to work abroad and send remittances back to Jamaica.Lawyers for the BTNFD rapper have indicated his intention to plead not guilty at his hearing set for February 12.
We have just closed out the first month of the New Year and already the figures for crime are looking quite ominous. Instead of crime going on the decrease it is skyrocketing. Just one month and already over 100 murders have been committed.
Last year will go down in the books as one of the *lo**iest year the country has seen.
The murder rate for 2007 surpassed the previous year's total, this according to police reports.
Data received indicated there were 1,574 murders in 2007, a 17 percent rise from 2006. Of those murdered last year, 19 were members of the police force while 146 were women with 65 being children.
There were 82 double murders, 10 triple murders and five quadruple murders. Most of the murders - 79 percent - were committed by guns while most of the homicides were committed in the inner city communities of Olympic Gardens, Waterhouse, Drewsland, Seaview Gardens, Riverton City, and sections of Maxfield Avenue. November was the *lo**iest with 166 persons murdered within that 30-day period.
Throughout last year there were several initiatives implemented to stop the rising surge of crime with little success. DCP Shield at one point revealed that they would be targeting hot spot areas in every division in Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine...still the figures rise.
Some policemen are now beginning to cry out for the death penalty in an effort to send a serious message to criminals. Will it prove to be a deterrent? That is anyone's guess...still...YardFlex hopes that good sense will prevail and our country can truly go back to its slogan and mean it...come home to paradise.

A total of 113 people were murdered in the first 27 days of this year, police statistics have shown.
It was, however, 16 less than the 129 murders recorded for the corresponding period last year.
Seven women and three men were among the 113 deaths, which included four double killings.
Most of the murders, 17, took place in the St Catherine North Police Division, while the parishes of Clarendon and St James saw 14 and nine persons being murdered, respectively, while 12 murders were recorded in the St Andrew South Division.
In the meantime, there have been six fatal police shootings up to January 27, compared to nine in January 2007. Two persons were also fatally shot by licensed firearm holders.
Altiman Whyte and his children - Nickeisha, 23; Lorna, 10, and Sylvia - were a picture of grief near the bereaved father's fruit stall in Flankers yesterday. |
FLANKERS, St James - Nothing could have prepared family members and friends for the gruesome deaths of brothers, Anthony Whyte, seven, and Romeo Whyte, five, who were Tuesday evening swept out of their mother's arms by a hit-and-run driver as they attempted to cross the main road here.
The children's mother, 45-year-old Belva Phillips, also received injuries in the accident. She was treated at the Cornwall Regional Hospital.
According to Constable Richam Davis, the Constabulary Communication Network's (CCN) liaison officer for St James, at approximately 6:15 pm on Tuesday, Phillips, who was accompanied by three of her 12 children and a grandchild, was attempting to cross the Flankers main road when the two little ones were hit by a Nissan motorcar which allegedly overtook a line of traffic.
Constable Davis reported the woman and the children had just got off a bus and were in the process of crossing the street, after a motorist stopped to allow them to cross, when they were hit.
The incident attracted a large crowd and triggered a long build-up of traffic as community members and passersby alike converged on the scene to get a peek at the *lo**-drenched bodies of the two brothers who attended the Flankers Primary and Junior High and Providence Basic School, respectively, sprawled along the roadway.
Several people wept openly at the scene. The boys' father, Altiman Whyte, a 70-year-old fruit vendor, collapsed on the scene after seeing the motionless, mutilated bodies of his young sons.
"Me drop down up there last night, me couldn't stay. Me daughter dem carry me home last night me couldn't stomach to see how two little boys how them mash up. Lord God! I don't know where the man (driver) him no stop and nothing," wailed the distressed father yesterday. "I don't know what going happen. I can't explain. Those two kids I love them, I miss them ever so much, I don't know what going happen to me. I don't know when this going come outa me."
The distraught father, who is also the Phillips' common-law husband, said the tragedy struck after members of his family were returning home after leaving the nearby Sandals Montego Bay Hotel where they usually receive free meals.
The tearful Whyte said they were transported from the hotel by one of the hotel's buses.
".As the bus man drop her off, a car give her the right-away fe come across. I hear that a car lick the two boys out of her hands, and she get a lick on her right foot," said the grief-stricken Whyte.
Whyte yesterday urged the National Works Agency to install traffic lights at the North Coast Highway's intersection with Flankers.
".Jesus Christ Almighty God, man it needs something fe check them quality speed. Oh God Almighty man, member say people live in the area you know, is not a place where wild cow live. Lord God Almighty anybody, even big people it could a happen to," said Whyte.
Jamie Lynn Spears has agreed to give up her unborn baby, it has been claimed.
The 16-year-old star of Nickelodeon show 'Zoey 101' will reportedly give the child to her mother Lynne as soon as it is born, so she can focus on her career.
A source told America's Star magazine: "After several weeks of personal soul searching and talks and discussions with her mom, Jamie Lynn reluctantly agreed that giving up the baby is the right thing to do.
"Lynne says Jamie doesn't understand the lifelong consequences of having a baby. She wants Jamie Lynn to continue her show business career after the baby is born and Jamie Lynn also realises she wants to enjoy her teenage years without the responsibilities of caring for a baby.
"Jamie Lynn will be back at work and trying to remind people of her talent and not that she is an unwed teenage mother."
Lynne will raise the baby at the family home in Kentwood, Louisiana, away from the Hollywood spotlight.
Since Jamie Lynn announced her pregnancy she has been living at the family's $3 million estate while studying for a high school equivalency exam and attending parenting classes. But it is believed once she gives birth she will return to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career.
Jamie Lynn, the younger sister of Britney Spears, insists her 18-year-old boyfriend Casey Aldridge is the father of her baby. However, insiders claim the father is actually a much older TV executive from her show.
A source said: "Jamie Lynn has been working on her show 'Zoey 101' since she was 13. In Hollywood, little girls grow up fast and she's no exception. With everything that has gone on in her family, she needed someone to look up to.
"But the man she found seems to have completely taken advantage of her."
A representative for Jamie Lynn denied she plans to give up her baby.

Escape: One person edges along a ledge, top left, as the child (ringed) was thrown from the smoke-engulfed flats in Ludwigshafen, southern Germany. It is feared the blaze was started by neo-Nazis
The child was seen falling through the smoke...to be caught safely in the hands of waiting policemen nearly 40 feet below.
But at least nine other people - five of them children - were not so lucky and perished in the fire which devastated the old house where 52 people lived in the southern city of Ludwigshafen.

Terrifying sight: The young baby hurtles towards the ground from the third-floor window
A further 60 people were injured in the fire, some of them seriously, which broke out at 4.30pm yesterday afternoon.
At least two more people are expected to die from their burns. Many Turkish families lived in the block, prompting fears that neo-Nazis may have torched it.
Police have formed a special commission to determine the cause of the blaze.
The toddler seen was one of two thrown to safety from the four storey building into the arms of policemen.

Agonising: The family watch helplessly and hope the two-year-old is caught safely
It remains unclear whether their parents escaped the flames and smoke.
Cushions and pillows were piled into the streets below as people cut off from the burning stairwell were urged to jump.
At one stage firemen smashed in through a second floor window to rescue a four-year-old child totally black from smoke. He was treated in hospital and will survive. The fire broke out in the first floor of the four-storey building on Danzigplatz.
The flats were filled with Sunday afternoon visitors calling on friends and relations who wanted a view of a carnival street festival attended by 250,000 people in the old centre of the city. "Anyone caught in that backdraft was incinerated in seconds."

Rescue: A boy is handed to safety as scared residents, mostly immigrants, make their way onto the balconies. It is feared the arson attack was carried out by neo-Nazis
Flames burst from windows and within half an hour the roof had caved in on the inhabitants trapped inside.
"The old wooden stairwell acted like a chimmney, drawing flames two metres in height upwards like a blast furnace," said a fire brigade spokesman.
Police were forced to evacuate old houses on either side of the fire for fear that the flames would spread.
By this morning the building was a blackened, gutted shell in danger of collapse.
Eva Lohse, the mayor of Ludwigshafen, stood before the smoking ruins last night with tears streaming down her face.
Police said they fear finding more bodies trapped inside
A TWO-year-old British girl was this morning in hospital in Cyprus after being served detergent mixed with orange juice.
Doctors said Annabelle Rhodes, who was on a family holiday, was in "critical but stable" condition.
The incident happened at the four-star Curium Palace hotel on Saturday evening. Annabelle suffered internal burns to her mouth, throat and upper respiratory organs and has been connected to a respirator.
Medics at the hospital warned she could suffer some permanent damage.
Head of paediatrics at Makarios children's hospital Andreas Hadjidemtriou said the girl was put on a tube because her upper breathing channels had closed.
"From here on in we have to wait and see the consequences of this incident on the little girl," said Hadjidemetriou.
The mistake occurred when the 55-year-old father Mark ordered a watered-down orange squash for his daughter from the hotel bar.
Police believe a plastic water bottle was refilled with the detergent and left in the kitchen without any note warning staff of its content.
"It appears the barman used a container which he thought contained water but was in fact dishwasher detergent, " said a police spokeswoman.
"We are treating this as an accident as the person wasn't to know there was a different liquid in the plastic water bottle, " she added.
However, police have not ruled out making any arrests on the grounds of negligence. Mark Rhodes declined to comment saying:"This is a very personal matter please leave us alone," is all he could say.
The odourless and colourless liquid consumed has been sent to a state laboratory for testing but reports suggested it was nitric acid.

No one is quite sure exactly who Valentine was. There are at least three and possible eight different Valentines claimed to be the real romantic. The three most likely Valentines were all church martyrs. One was killed with a group of believers and the other two, a priest of Rome and a Bishop of Interamna, beheaded by Emperor Claudius II in 269 A.D. The remains of one of the Valentines is said to be in the church of St. Praxedes in Rome.
There are several legends regarding Valentine. He was said to have been imprisoned and while there, cured the jailer's daughter from blindness. Yet another story has him falling in love with the jailer's daughter sending her a letter signed "from your Valentine." However the most likely origin of Valentine's day goes back to the Roman Lupercalia, a feast celebrating the God Lupercus. During that feast, young women would put their names into a box from which young men would draw. This matchmaking process would then enamor the two youth until the next year. Associating the matchmaking feast with the martyrdom of Valentine was convenient because the days were almost identical.
Sending love notes on Valentines Day occurred much later. Charles Duc d' Orleans, while imprisoned in the Tower of London, supposedly wrote amorous poems and letters to his wife in 1415. Valentine love notes gradually increased in popularity until their mechanization in 1840. Since 1840, Valentine Cards have become tremendously popular all over the world.
Students at a high school in Manchester are still being counselled and prayed for after more than 20 of them were possessed by demons last week.
The two-day long ordeal involved several hours of prayer for the students who had demons speaking through them in an African language. Some of the students even attempted deadly stunts such as jumping in front of vehicles and trying to jump through windows.
Normality was finally restored to the institution after the affected students who ranged from first to fifth form were baptised.
According to students who witnessed the possession, it all started last Thursday while they were having morning devotion service. "We were having devotions, then we heard a loud screaming. The lady (conducting the devotions) stopped what she was saying and started praying," a student told THE STAR.
Afterwards, another student is said to have been heard screaming and this continued in a ripple effect. The affected students started to run around and had to be restrained by teachers.
The rest of the student population that was not affected was sent back to their classrooms while a prayer service began for those affected. However, the students continued to act out.
"One of my friends told me that she going to jump through the window. The security locked the gate and one of the girls climbed over and was standing in the middle of the road. A big trailer was coming and a pastor had to get her out of the way," the student said.
Prayer sessions
As for the student who wanted to jump through the window, the source said that the security had to lock her in a room to restrain her. In addition, the demons, speaking through a student, are reported to have said that they (pastors) can't save her because they (demons) have already saved her.
On Friday, despite the long prayer sessions the day before, some of the students still returned with the possession. This time the school administration chose a different method, that of baptising all the affected students.
During the baptism, however, one of the demon-possessed students allegedly screamed several times as they were baptised. "Every time they go down in the water, she scream out and when it was her time to baptise, she take a long time to go under the water and when she come up she just take up her bag and go home. We haven't seen her since," a student said.
Several attempts by the STAR to get a comment from the school principal about the incident were unsuccessful. Meanwhile Charlene Ashley, director of communications at the Ministry, said they would look into the matter. We have just closed out the first month of the New Year and already the figures for crime are looking quite ominous.
