When his $8 million mansion was featured in the centre pages of a glossy lifestyle magazine, it was dubbed a dream home fit for a pop star.

The proud owner, Paul Yearsley, was eager to show off his Georgian-style mansion, complete with a state-of-the-art home cinema, huge swimming pool, sauna, gym and a brand-new Range Rover sitting on the drive alongside a Bentley Continental.

But while he claimed to have made his fortune selling homes to Premier League footballers, in reality Yearsley was a drug baron whose only legitimate income was a council disability pension, thought to amount to a few hundred pounds a month.

Now the 44-year-old faces jail after admitting supplying cannabis worth $448,000. He is due to be sentenced at Manchester Crown Court today.

The married father of four was caught only after officers from the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) became suspicious about his lavish lifestyle in relation to his meagre official income.

He had worked for Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council as a recreation supervisor at a swimming pool until 1993 when he was pensioned off at the age of 28 because of health issues.

Sixteen years later, Yearsley had built up a multi-million-pound property portfolio, including 80 homes around Manchester as well as a villa in the Costa del Sol.

After building his own stately mansion in the footballers belt of Heaton in Bolton, which he named Knowsley Manor, the drug lord also developed another mansion in the grounds, which he sold on for $2.9million, and a third development of a $1 million house was planned on the same site.

Cannabliss: Crime squad officers spotted that Knowsley Manor appeared rather grand for someone getting by on just a disability payment.

But Yearsley couldnt resist the temptation to flaunt his wealth and in August 2009, he and his wife Carol, 45, who formerly worked in merchandising with The Disney Store, invited Lancashire Magazine, a local homes and lifestyle glossy publication, to see their seven-bedroom home.

It received a glowing write-up, with the magazine gushing about roomfuls of wow factor, detailing the marble floors throughout, the bespoke marble kitchen, imposing curved double staircase and oversized mirrors in every room that transformed into giant TV screens.

Perhaps it is at the very bottom of this house that the ultimate feeling of dream living is crystallised, it added, describing the swimming pool, bar lounge, steam room and showers, gym and cinema.

Yearsley told Lancashire Magazine that he made his millions first as a car salesman then through his property company, Premier Properties Ltd. But Soca officers, who had been watching him for a year, knew differently.

They followed him to a retail park in Bolton where he met drug-runners Frederick Hoyle and Tony Dixon to oversee the handover of 120 kilos of cannabis resin packed in four bales which had been smuggled into the country from North Africa. When Yearsley was arrested on December 18, 2009, his wife and daughters had their bags packed to jet off to a luxury ski resort.

In October last year he pleaded guilty at Manchester Crown Court, admitting he had responsibility for arranging delivery and storage of the drugs. He is due to be sentenced today along with Hoyle, 60, of Chelmsford and Dixon, 38, of Horwich, Bolton, who also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply cannabis resin.

Steve Baldwin, head of investigations in the North West for Soca, said: Paul Yearsley was a man whose lifestyle on paper and in reality simply didnt match. Unfortunately for Yearsley he couldnt resist splashing out on luxury houses and cars. Soca will now be investigating his assets, and if we can prove they are the proceeds of crime we will do everything we can to take them off him.

A New York college student is suing a Las Vegas escort service because of the trauma he claims he suffered after almost being arrested when he called police to snitch on them.

Hubert Blackman was staying at the Stratosphere on December 17, when he called Las Vegas Exclusive Personals for a h*e.

When the hooker arrived, Blackman explained to her that he wanted to buy her services for an hour. After performing a lap dance and sex act for a total of $275.00, the hooker bounced after only half an hour.

According to the Las Vegas Sun, Blackman called the escort service demanding a refund because the hooker left early and he was drunk when he made the agreement.

After being told to kick rocks by the escort service, Blackman then called Las Vegas Metro Police. They told him prostitution was illegal in Las Vegas and he could be arrested. They informed him he would be better off calling the Better Business Bureau.

Blackman decided to file a lawsuit in New York federal court instead, stating "An escort did an illegal sexual act on me during her paid service to me'' and "I almost had gotten arrested."

He alleges he now suffers from an unnamed mental condition that he needs treatment for after the "traumatic" event.

In the lawsuit filed without a lawyer by Blackman he states: "I would like the court to close the business. I also would like to get my $275 payment back and a $1.8 million verdict for the tragic event that happened."

Jack LaLanne, the fitness guru who inspired television viewers to trim down, eat well and pump iron for decades before diet and exercise became a national obsession, died Sunday. He was 96.

LaLanne died of respiratory failure due to pneumonia Sunday afternoon at his home in Morro Bay on California's central coast, his longtime agent Rick Hersh said.

fingertip-pushups_533a.jpg

LaLanne ate healthy and exercised every day of his life up until the end, Hersh said.

"I have not only lost my husband and a great American icon, but the best friend and most loving partner anyone could ever hope for," Elaine LaLanne, LaLanne's wife of 51 years and a frequent partner in his television appearances, said in a written statement.

He maintained a youthful physique and joked in 2006 that "I can't afford to die. It would wreck my image."

r___Jack_La_Lanne_courtesy_Tri_Star_Products.jpg

Former "Price is Right" host Bob Barker credited LaLanne's encouragement with helping him to start exercising often.

"He never lost enthusiasm for life and physical fitness," the 87-year-old Barker told The Associated Press on Sunday. "I saw him in about 2007 and he still looked remarkably good. He still looked like the same enthusiastic guy that he always was."

Jack-LaLanne.jpg

LaLanne (pronounced lah-LAYN') credited a sudden interest in fitness with transforming his life as a teen, and he worked tirelessly over the next eight decades to transform others' lives, too.

"The only way you can hurt the body is not use it," LaLanne said. "Inactivity is the killer and, remember, it's never too late."

His workout show was a television staple from the 1950s to the '70s. LaLanne and his dog Happy encouraged kids to wake their mothers and drag them in front of the television set. He developed exercises that used no special equipment, just a chair and a towel.

50235_9861836197_8944_n.jpg

He also founded a chain of fitness studios that bore his name and in recent years touted the value of raw fruit and vegetables as he helped market a machine called Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer.

When he turned 43 in 1957, he performed more than 1,000 push-ups in 23 minutes on the "You Asked For It" television show. At 60, he swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco - handcuffed, shackled and towing a boat. Ten years later, he performed a similar feat in Long Beach harbor.

jacklalanne.jpg

"I never think of my age, never," LaLanne said in 1990. "I could be 20 or 100. I never think about it, I'm just me. Look at Bob Hope, George Burns. They're more productive than they've ever been in their whole lives right now."

Fellow bodybuilder and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger credited LaLanne with taking exercise out of the gymnasium and into living rooms.

"He laid the groundwork for others to have exercise programs, and now it has *la*hmed from that black and white program into a very colorful enterprise," Schwarzenegger said in 1990.

In 1936 in his native Oakland, LaLanne opened a health studio that included weight-training for women and athletes. Those were revolutionary notions at the time, because of the theory that weight training made an athlete slow and "muscle bound" and made a woman look masculine.

"You have to understand that it was absolutely forbidden in those days for athletes to use weights," he once said. "It just wasn't done. We had athletes who used to sneak into the studio to work out.

Jack.jpg

"It was the same with women. Back then, women weren't supposed to use weights. I guess I was a pioneer," LaLanne said.

The son of poor French immigrants, he was born in 1914 and grew up to become a sugar addict, he said.

The turning point occurred one night when he heard a lecture by pioneering nutritionist Paul Bragg, who advocated the benefits of brown rice, whole wheat and a vegetarian diet.

"He got me so enthused," LaLanne said. "After the lecture I went to his dressing room and spent an hour and a half with him. He said, 'Jack, you're a walking garbage can.'"

Soon after, LaLanne constructed a makeshift gym in his back yard. "I had all these firemen and police working out there and I kind of used them as guinea pigs," he said.

He said his own daily routine usually consisted of two hours of weightlifting and an hour in the swimming pool.

"It's a lifestyle, it's something you do the rest of your life," LaLanne said. "How long are you going to keep breathing? How long do you keep eating? You just do it."

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Dan and Jon, and a daughter, Yvonne.

MTV_Skins_Jan21newsnea.jpg

MTVs new show Skins is already under lots of criticism for its depiction of teen sex, drug use and child pornography claims. Do you think the show goes too far?

We are confident that the episodes of Skins will not only comply with all applicable legal requirements, but also with our responsibilities to our viewers, MTV said in a written statement (via ABC News). We also have taken numerous steps to alert viewers to the strong subject matter so that they can choose for themselves whether it is appropriate.

Even though MTV is standing by their show, experts believe they may be changing their tune once more sponsors pull out.

There have been reports that MTV is going to tone the show down, TV Guide business editor Stephen Battaglio said. If theres any pressure that MTV is going to bow to, it would be to advertisers.

Taco Bell is one advertiser that has already pulled commercials from future Skins shows.

And now, The Parents Television Council has called for an open investigation from the chairmen of the U.S. Senate and House Judiciary committees and the Department of Justice into what they allege is child pornography of actors as young as 15.

And the PTC also has major concerns for the alcohol and drug references in the show.

I think that it is terribly important that we let our kids know that this is in fact not the norm, Terry Real, a family therapist told ABC News.

The concern for the boys is that the idea here is very clearly that even the young boys 14, 15, 16 are up for sex anywhere, anytime with anyone, Real said. I think thats a lot of pressure for our sons to have to deal with.

The girls concern me even more because if you look at the kind of sexuality thats portrayed its often in fact not mutual, its about girls feeling they need to service boys in order to keep them, he added. I think this a direct, in some ways, backlash to the empowerment of girls. I think we need to stand up to it and have our daughters stand up to it and do what they feel comfortable with.

But ABC asked some teens what they thought of Skins and they said they feel its true-to-life.

Thats just really how life is except not to their extremes, one teen said.

Bounty Killer is said to be once again...Cross, Angry and absolutely Miserable about the fact that Vybz cake soap Kartel is booked for the Follow Di Arrow stage show. Fallow Di Arrow has always been an all Alliance affair and the fact that Portmore Empire will be represented at the show Bounty Killer is not at all amused.
The show is run by Ennis and Decky Promotions and they seem to want to be apart of the hype that is fellowing Kartel at the moment. The show will be held at the James Bond Beach in Orachabessa, St. Mary.
We will be waiting to see how this one will unfold..whether the five star General, Bounty Killer will perform his set or deform Kartels. Bounty Killer didn't perform at Sting 2010.. and up to this point the speculations are that it was a money issue with the promoter. For this Follow the Arrow show Bounty Killer might not turn up in protest of Kartel presence or better yet he just might run up on him while he is onstage for an impromptu clash..now that would be wicked.

Don't expect a harmonious duet from Ruben Diaz Jr. and Jennifer Lopez anytime soon.

The borough president slammed the Bronx-bred songstress yesterday for staying silent during what he called the worst hatchet job on the borough since Howard Cosell told a national TV audience "The Bronx is burning" three decades ago.

"American Idol" served up a gritty portrayal of the borough as a litter-strewn urban badland during its Wednesday show.

"There wasn't even a peep from her defending the Boogie Down," groused Diaz. "Here, we have a young lady sitting at the panel, someone brought up in Castle Hill, someone to whom the Bronx offered plenty of opportunities, and she did not say a word.

"Not a peep. Not even a peep!"

Along with Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson, Lopez serves as a judge on "Idol."

alg_american_idol_auditions_judges.jpg?width=500

The segment told the story of contestant Travis Orlando's upbringing. Orlando, 16, spent three years in a Bronx homeless shelter.

"Tell me about growing up in the Bronx for you," asked Idol host Ryan Seacrest.

"It was tough," responds Orlando. "Gangs, drugs, violence.. .You have robberies, you have killings, anything you can possibly imagine goes on here."

Then they walk a street off the Grand Concourse, as ghetto-like images flash of a pay phone with a dangling receiver and an apparent makeshift memorial on a sidewalk.

A police car flashes its lights, accompanied by the sound of sirens. The camera pans to litter-filled streets with an empty plastic bag blowing down the sidewalk like tumbleweed. An FDNY ambulance barrels down the street and kids play in the spray from an open fire hydrant.

Orlando opens the metal-gated door to the building where his family once lived. He talks in front of walls marred by graffiti.

The contestant, who advanced, sang a rendition of The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" and "I'm Yours," by Jason Mraz.

Meanwhile, Diaz did say that "Idol" fans should vote "early and often" for Orlando.

"I'm going to be dialing in as much as I can," he said. "Unlike a democratic election, you can vote as many times as you like."

Lopez, who grew up in the Bronx and acquired the moniker Jenny from the Block, has carved a successful career from music and movies. But Lopez has now been criticized by her former principal, Claire La Tempa, from the Holy Family School, for allegedly turning her back on the community.

La Tempa, who worked alongside the star's mother Guadalupe at the school, tells the New York Daily News, "Jennifer hasn't even sent us a CD. (Her mother) Lupe was wonderful, a sweetie, and wonderful with the kids. When Jennifer became famous, I asked Lupe if Jennifer could donate a scholarship in her name, and Lupe just said, 'Uh-uh! That's her money and that's it.'

"The recession has hit parents hard. Many of them are single mothers. A lot have lost their jobs. I have one mother who worked at St. Vincent's Hospital for 25 years - and she's out of work now. It's hard for families to make the tuition... I keep praying she'll donate the pink diamond engagement ring Ben Affleck gave her."
Jennifer Lopez was born and grew up in Castle Hill. Lopez's debut album On the 6, a reference to the 6 subway line she used to take growing up in Castle Hill was released on June 1, 1999, and reached the top ten of the Billboard 200.

This week, city council members from Huntington Beach, Calif. considered requiring their local police to post mug shots of all DUI offenders on Facebook. For a society that has moved on from physical punishment in public, our Scarlet Letter complex is still frighteningly unwavering.

Physicist and author of "Physics of the Future" Michio Kaku warned world citizens this morning on Good Morning America about the pending threat of enormous  earthquakes.

"In our life time, we could very well see one of these cities destroyed," Kaku said. "Los Angeles,

San Francisco, Mexico City, Tehran, Tokyo."

Kaku pointed to changes in the physical structures of human civilization, and how the new composure poses many risks. "We are creating mega cities where there used to be fishing villages," he said.

Two of three gunmen were shot dead yesterday after their attempt to rob a public passenger bus turned into a *la*hdy gunfight with one of the passengers and police who were quick on the scene.

But while the brazen heist failed, three of the passengers died from gunshot wounds and a baby was injured.

The incident, which occurred about 1:10 pm on Grove Road in Kingston, left the surviving passengers terrified and further heightened public concern after the murder of five men by gunmen in Portmore, St Catherine late Thursday night.

It was not clear when the gunmen boarded the bus, which was travelling from downtown Kingston to Golden Spring. However, the police said that when the vehicle got to Balmoral Avenue the three bandits ordered the driver to turn off the busy road and head to Grove Road.

One female passenger told the Observer that the gunmen started abusing and robbing the passengers.

"Everything just happened so suddenly," said the woman. "I got on the bus at Oxford Road. When the bus reached Balmoral Avenue one man, with a gun in his hand, ordered the driver to turn on Grove Road."

She said that another of the gunmen ordered the passengers to stay calm. But after obeying the gunmen, the driver ran out of the bus, the woman said, her voice still trembling.

She said that it was at this point that a male passenger, who was armed, confronted the gunmen.

"It was all confusion from there," the woman said. "There was *la*hd everywhere. People were screaming as the sounds of gunshots echoed throughout the bus. People were on the ground screaming for their life."

When the smoke cleared, one of the gunmen lay dead and several other persons were injured.

"I saw a mother just sitting in one of the seats with what appeared to be gunshot wounds, *la*hd was everywhere," said the woman. "I also saw a baby and there was *la*hd around."

Police yesterday confirmed that two men and one woman succumbed to gunshot wounds they received during the ordeal. Police also said one of the gunmen was fatally shot on the bus.

Another was shot and killed in the Kencot Gully just minutes after a police team arrived at the scene and challenged him and his crony as they fled.

Up to press, time police had still not released the names of the victims.

Police however, said they seized two guns, a 9-mm pistol and a .38 revolver.

The bus killings came less than 24 hours after Owen Henry, 39; Kenton Headley, 30; Levil Anderson, 45; Lerrimore Warmington, 56; and a man known only as 'Pazzam', all of St Catherine addresses, were shot dead in Portmore's Portsmouth community Thursday night.

Police report that the group of men was playing dominoes when 10 gunmen alighted from two vehicles and shot them.

The St Catherine South police say they are seeking a man known only as 'Don Topping' who has been named as a person of interest in the Portsmouth killings.

Yesterday, Police Commissioner Owen Ellington described the acts as 'barbaric' and said they represent a clear statement of intent by criminal elements that they are willing to test the resolve, determination and capabilities of the police in maintaining law and order.

"Over the last 24 hours, two particularly barbaric and brutal incidents perpetrated by criminals have taken place in St Catherine and St Andrew," Ellington said.

"I am issuing a warning to these criminals that their attempts to unsettle the police in the conduct of their lawful duties will be met with stern resistance," he added. "I have directed my men and women to relentlessly pursue these and other criminals, knowing that they have my full support. These criminals represent a threat to law and order in the society and they must not be given the opportunity to kill again. They will be brought to justice."

Yesterday, the police issued an appeal to 'Don Topping' to report to the Greater Portmore Police Station by 8:00 am today.

A man who police yesterday named as a person of interest in the murders of five men in Portsmouth, St Catherine on Thursday night, has turned himself into the police.

The man, identified only by his alias 'Don Topping', was picked up at his attorney's office by head of the Criminal Investigation Bureau, Superintendent Elan Powell.

He is being represented by attorney Christopher Townsend.

On Thursday night Owen Henry, 39; Kenton Headley, 30; Levil Anderson, 45; Lerrimore Warmington, 56; and a man known only as 'Pazzam', all of St Catherine addresses, were gunned down as they played dominoes at a popular hang out spot in Portsmouth.

Police report that while the men played dominoes two cars drove up and about 10 armed men alighted and opened fire at the group. Killing the five on the spot before escaping.

Homicide investigators suspect that the gunmen were targetting 'Pazzam' who is allegedly a member of the notorious Spanish Town-based Klansman gang.

Complainant beaten with metal chair during dispute

Two basic school teachers who were both involved in an altercation resulting in the complainant being hit with an metal chair by her co-worker causing injury to her forehead, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

The court heard that the incident took place on December 10 last year at about 2:15 p.m. on the school's compound.

The defendant, Conroy Smith, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and is set to return to court on February 25.

The complainant later told the court that she wanted to be compensated $50,000 for the pain and suffering she had to endure as a result of the incident.

four-inch cuts

The medical report substantiated the complainant's claim, as it outlined that the complainant had four-inch cuts to the right side of her forehead causing a swelling.

However, the defendant explained to the court that the complainant had already received $15,000, which had been deducted from his salary by the school.

The defendant's wife then appeared in court with an additional $9,000 which was handed over to the complainant with the understanding that the balance will be provided on the next court date.

The defendant, who addressed the court rather politely, expressed remorse for his actions and told the court that he was provoked by the complainant and lost his temper which forced him to act the way he did.

The defendant also told the court that both he and the complainant have since been fired from the institution.

Book: The Deprived!

CHAPTER ONE

One day my elder brother came back to our village. He was suffering with a strange illness; that weakened his powerful warrior anatomy, making him seem as if he was almost to die. The chief of my village, The Great Camcubana Man, informs the village community about the strange and lurking disease. He called it the small pox, and said it was carried by caravan traders interacting with white men, from far away lands. I decided to get some medicine for my dieing brother in the thick jungled regions of Benin were the bush Doctors lived. Many dangerous wild animals; lion, poisnous snakes and alligators lived in the deep bushes, so i moved cautiously, making good use of my African survival skills. I made the journey safely through the mighty Corara Jungle, and unto the large flat plains of Benin. "Things were not so good in Benin", said the medicine man. "The local farmers and most skill Beninians such as Craftsman,Mason and Blacksmiths were captured in a *la*hdy and terrible tribal raid". The medicine man continues by saying, "many of the warriors were captured and taken away!". I became nervous of the strange incidents happening on the once peaceful lush green continent of Africa. I thanked the medicine man, gave him five beautiful cowie shells in exchange for the herbs. I then nervously crawled outside of the small hut. The sun was extremely hot and very bright, as i ventured on my journey back to my village in Dahomey. I decided to take a quick rest beneath a huge; tall cotton tree, by the dirt track. I was feeling relax inhaling the fresh air mix with fragrance from orchid flowers near by. BANG!! almost like thunder, birds went scattering in flight from trees. Bang! bang! bang! a heavy noise went disturbing the air, i have never heard that terrible sound before. I got scared and nervous, i began to run, BANG! the heavy sound went echoing once again.

CHAPTER TWO

I was very nervous and shaky; I realized that i was been chased, by men from one of Benin's most terrible war like tribes; with their spears and the unknown BANG! weapon. The chase was long, and i had been caught. They bound my hands tightly behind my back, and dragged me off to an area where many Africans were held in captive like animals. The structure of the building in which we were held was very strong, i could not break through with all my might. The space was small or may it be the large number of persons that were inside. It was dark and cold. I didn't talk with anyone inside the cage, because i could not interpret their language..... we were of different tribes. Night had now fall over the land, yet no one was sleeping, just weeping. The smaller captives and females in their teenage years were sobbing, softly in the fear not to be heared by the men standing by the cage with spears. I felt hopeless and frightened. A drop of tears fell from my eyes down unto my thick dark lips. It seem as if i fell asleep in the late night something very freezy and raw was thrown unto us. It was sea water. ....................>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> WANT MORE? EMAIL ME xsimpson19x@yahoo.com

For nearly a fifth of men, sex is just terrible.

About 16% of men are able to ejaculate but feel none of the pleasure of orgasm, according to research presented at the European Society for Sexual Medicine.

In fact, when it comes to sexual dysfunction, it's not the erection or the ejaculation that's the problem for many men -- it's feeling anything at all.

So are these men, well, faking their orgasms?

"When I asked the test subjects in plain language, Did you feel orgasm [after ejaculating after sex with a woman], 16 % of men in our group said they didn't have sensation of orgasm," said Dr. Darius Paduch, assistant professor of urology and reproductive medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College.  "This is astonishing."

Problems with sexual pleasure don't just affect older men.  Paduch said that he sees men as young as their 20s.

It isn't easy for men to admit to their partner that they can't enjoy sex.

"Our society is more sympathetic for women facing sexual problems, but men are still faced with self-doubt, fear of being labeled as impotent, inadequate and just not a full man," said Paduch. "You need to remember that regardless if a man is a bricklayer or a president, men value themselves through their sexual performance."

R.I.P COPPER CAT........................DEM KILL DI YUTE OVA BB TO RAZZ A FOOKRY DAT STAR

Doctor and skeptic Ben Goldacre, has some stern words for those in the Catholic Church who misinform their congregations about the role of contraception in helping to prevent the spread of AIDS. Weve seen Benedicts stance on how to deal with the virus already, a stance that ignores any and all evidence that condoms really do slow the spread of HIV and AIDS. And in his latest column, Goldacre sheds a light on the falsehoods that are blatantly spread by Catholic priests in Africa, lies which pretty much ensure that the diseases will rage out of control on the continent for the sake of preserving the purity of a dogma written well before the invention of the kind of effective contraception we take for granted today. Some notable examples include

[Benedict's] stance has been supported, in the past year alone, by Cardinal George Pell of Sydney and Cardinal Cormac Murphy OConnor, the Archbishop of Westminster. Its quite ridiculous to go on about AIDS in Africa and condoms, and the Catholic Church, says OConnor. I talk to priests who say, My diocese is flooded with condoms and there is more Aids because of them.

Some have been more imaginative in their quest to spread the message against condom use. In 2007, Archbishop Francisco Chimoio of Mozambique said that European condom manufacturers are deliberately infecting condoms with HIV to spread Aids in Africa.

Other gems, including messages which confuse immunization with a physical barrier for a virus carried in the bodily fluids being exchanged during sex, and comparisons of condoms to corks, are also mentioned, as well as the soaring rates of infection in the nations that are being actively told not to use condoms. So how pray tell do the Cardinals make the connection that its condoms which are at fault for higher rates of HIV and AIDS in Africa when the very priests who say theyre flooded in contraceptives are vilifying them? Of course they see an increase in infections. Theyre demonizing the very things proven up to 95% effective at stopping transmission with proper use, and 80% in any and all cases. Its like going into a war zone with bulletproof vests, declaring to soldiers that the vests are actually tainted with evil and dont protect them anyway, letting them march into a storm of gunfire, then wonder why there are more soldiers dying from bullet wounds and declaring that it must be the vests, therefore the last thing the soldiers need are more vests. Which you told them not to use.

Just like the dangerous machinations of AIDS denialists, priests ignorance and arrogance when it comes to the AIDS epidemic in Africa are quite literally killing people. We know comprehensive sexual education works, theres concrete data supporting its many advantages over abstinence-only dogma, and we also know that the pious, anti-scientific version of sex-ed actually drives STD rates upwards. And thats why its a frustrating and aggravating challenge to stem HIV and AIDS infections in Africa. Those trying to make things better have a brick wall of arrogant, unyielding beliefs standing in their way, and human beings deaf to any reasons or logic that dont support their indoctrinations or personal biases. Oh sure, these priests are more than willing to help those suffering from hunger and illness. They just need to make sure that those who are about the receive the help theyre willing to provide dont require them to step outside of their ideologies. The result is that the death tolls for HIV and AIDS remain disturbingly high, and will stay that way for a long time to come. This is what you get when strict, merciless dogma is valued more highly than the lives of human beings.

"U Know How Many Rappers Would Be Like 'I Can't Get On C4 But Chris Brown On That B*tch Rapping?" [LISTEN]

00lilwaynechrisbrown.jpg

Chris Brown is stepping his rap game up as evidenced by the "Green Goblin" track where he goes toe to toe with Jae Millz. Still, not everybody is quite ready to let him spit with the big dogs.

Take his recent collaboration with Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes "Look At Me Now" for instance. Weezy was feeling the track so much he wanted it for his upcoming 'Carter IV' album, but he wasn't about to let Chris rap on the album according to Rolling Stone via Rap-Up.

He aint sound bad. Hes spitting. But come on, man! Do you know how many rappers would be like, I cant get on Tha Carter IV, but this ni**a put Chris Brown on that b****? Rapping? Wayne said. You cant take a ni**as song and take him off of it. Thats saying a whole lot. Thats like telling him, I think this s*** is hotter without you, I would feel played if a ni**a did me that way.

So instead of a C4 track "Look At Me Now" is the latest single from Breezy's upcoming "F.A.M.E." album.

THE ROOSTER

An old farmer decided it was time to get a new rooster for his hens. The current rooster was still doing an okay job, but he was getting on in years and the farmer figured getting a new rooster couldn't hurt.

So he buys a new **** from the local rooster emporium, and turns him loose in the barnyard. Well, the old rooster sees the young one strutting around and he's a little worried about being replaced. He walks up to the new bird. "So you're the new stud in town? I bet you really think you're hot stuff don't you? Well I'm not ready for the chopping block yet. I'll bet I'm still the better bird. And to prove it, I challenge you to a race around that hen house over there. We'll run around it ten times and whoever finishes first gets to have all the hens for himself." Well, the young rooster was a proud sort, and he definitely thought he was more than a match for the old guy. "You're on," he said, "and since I'm so great, I'll even give you a head start of half a lap. I'll still win easy!" So the two roostersgo over to the henhouse to start the race with all the hens gathering to watch. The race begins and all the hens start cheering the old rooster on. After the first lap, the old rooster is still maintaining hislead. After the second lap, the old guy's lead has slipped a little -- but he's still hanging in there. Unfortunately, the old rooster's lead continues to slip each time around, and by the fifth lap he's just barely in front of the young fella. By now the farmer has heard the commotion. He runs into the house, gets his shotgun and runs into the barnyard figuring a fox or something is after his chickens. When he gets there, he sees the two roosters running around the henhouse, with the old rooster still slightly in the lead. He immediately takes his shotgun, aims, fires, and blows the young rooster away.

"Damn. That's the third gay rooster I've bought this month."

Earth could be getting a second sun, at least temporarily.

Dr. Brad Carter, Senior Lecturer of Physics at the University of Southern Queensland, outlined the scenario to news.com.au. Betelgeuse, one of the night sky's brightest stars, is losing mass, indicating it is collapsing. It could run out of fuel and go super-nova at any time.

When that happens, for at least a few weeks, we'd see a second sun, Carter says. There may also be no night during that timeframe.

The Star Wars-esque scenario could happen by 2012, Carter says... or it could take longer. The explosion could also cause a neutron star or result in the formation of a black hole 1300 light years from Earth, reports news.com.au.

Sick Usher Walks Off Stage, Booed by Fans (Video)

Sick Usher Walks Off Stage, Booed by Fans (Video Below)

Its been a bad week for Usher.

The R&B star was forced to cancel a concert in Berlin on Wednesday due to illness, and despite rescheduling the show for the following night, he was not firing on all cylinders.

I was ill and felt that I would not have been able to give that show that you all properly deserve, Usher wrote of the cancelled show.

Determined not to disappoint his German fans, Usher rescheduled the show for Thursday night.

But Thursdays show at the O2 World Arena in Berlin wasnt the full-on spectacle that the singer, nor his fans, were expecting.

Usher lip-synched his first two songs and danced poorly to them, according to local tabloid B.Z. Restless, some fans reportedly began to boo, at which point Usher lowered his head, blew the crowd a kiss, tossed his mic to the floor and left.

A few minutes later the stage lights came on, and an announcement made that Usher was too sick to perform.

A statement released by Ushers rep said the singer is suffering from upper respiratory illness which is currently preventing him from performing a proper show. After consultation with doctors, he has been advised to reschedule the upcoming dates in order to get the rest he needs to ensure a complete recovery.

Usher added in a statement, I deeply regret having to reschedule the shows. I am truly sorry for any inconvenience I have caused my fans. My fans are the best in the world and I am looking forward to getting better so that I can give them the show they deserve.

Will Smith is looking into remaking the popular 1982 musical "Annie", with his daughter Willow cast in the lead role.

Variety is reporting that Sony and Will's Overbrook Entertainment production company would back the project.

Sony is said to be especially interested because it did very well financially on the "Karate Kid" remake, which starred Will's son, Jaden. The film has grossed $350 million worldwide to date.

Jay-Z reportedly is in talks to work on music for the film.

Hov's addition would be very interesting considering one of his biggest hits "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)" sampled the song "Hard Knock Life" from the original movie.

Reps for the project have not revealed whether or not the remake will include all new songs, or also have some from the original.

Miami: This past weekend, on a cool Sunday afternoon in Miami, Florida, scores of reggae performers including Tarrus Riley, Sean Paul, Gyptian, Nadine Sutherland, Gramps, Freddy McGreggor, Marcia Griffiths, Everton Blender, Stephen & Damien Marley, Shaggy, Wayne Wonder and Richie Loops came together to show love and support for cultural DJ Buju Banton at a benefit reggae concert in his honor billed "Before The Dawn."

Reggae crooner Gramps, who graced the stage after powerful performances from Nadine Sutherland, Freddy McGregor, Everton Blender and Richie Loops was greeted with thunderous applauds from the chorus of fans who were assembled at the Bayfront Park Amphitheater.

The former football player who is set to make a comeback this year, opened his set with the Morgan Heritage classic "Down By the River" that fans lapped up from start to finish. "Down By The River" made way for the heartfelt "Wash the Tears" from his award winning debut album "Two Sides Of My Heart" Vol 1. He poured his heart into the song, so much so that one fan commented "I can feel his passion, his energy...it is intense.' He warmed hearts with "Come Back To Bed," which proved the perfect offering for the many beautiful ladies who howled for more. And more they got as he segued into the all time classic - "She's Still Loving Me" that struck a responsive chord and proved the perfect offering for the 10,000 plus fans who were at his beck and call. He closed his stint on stage with "The Almighty, a new song that is currently riding high on the charts in Italy and Antigua.

For Gramps, this performance had extra special significance given that it was just about a year ago that he had performed in Miami on Buju's "Rasta Got Soul" 2009 tour. He came back this time to show support for his friend and what a soirée it was.

The highlight of the night came at the tail end of Buju's performance when the Gargamel instructed the band to bring it down low so he could have a talk with his fans.

"A dear friend of mine is in the house tonight" Buju said. "I could not do this without calling him on stage. Gramps Morgan where are you?"

Moments later Gramps emerged from backstage for an encore performance with his friend. As the band struck a familiar chord, the two friends sang in unison, "Hallowed be thy name..."

They brought the curtain down on the historic concert with the most holy and descriptive passages in the Bible - the

23rd Psalms - that was years ago put to song by the two talented reggae superstars. The song captured the moment and put into words the positive vibes that were flowing through the air. It was poetry...full of passion, heart and devotion.

"When I came on stage and started the song, my eyes became watery and I had to fight back the tears" a visibly shaken Gramps said moments after he exited the stage.

"A few tears came to my eyes when I had a moment to reflect on the magnitude of what had transpired tonight. Buju is my brother and a true friend that I love and respect with all my heart. As Martin Luther once said, The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. Be strong my friend! Everything will be alright."

MK.jpgSPOKANE, Wash. The FBI offered a reward Tuesday for information about a potentially lethal bomb found in a backpack along the downtown route of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade.

The discovery before Monday's parade for the slain civil rights leader raised the possibility of a racial motive in a region that has been home to the white supremacist Aryan Nations.

"The confluence of the holiday, the march and the device is inescapable," said Frank Harrill, special agent in charge of the Spokane FBI office. "But we are not at the point where we can draw any particular motive."

He called the planting of the bomb an act of domestic terrorism that was clearly designed to advance a political or social agenda.

The suspicious backpack was spotted by three city employees about an hour before the parade was to start, Harrill said. They looked inside, saw wires and immediately alerted law enforcement.

The parade route was changed to avoid the device. A bomb disposal unit disabled it without incident, he said.

Harrill declined to release details of the device, other than to call it a functional bomb that could have caused multiple casualties.

"The potential for injury and death were clearly present," Harrill said.

The FBI received no warnings in advance and did not have a suspect, Harrill said. No one has claimed credit for planting the bomb.

GonsalvesLectureB20081104NS.jpg

Dr Ralph Gonsalves, prime minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, is warning that failure to resolve the rescue of British American insurance company could hurt his government and CARICOM.

The process has been slowed by leadership changes in Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago.

British American was placed under judicial management when its parent company, the Trinidad-based conglomerate CL Financial - which also operated the beleaguered Colonial Life Insurance Company (CLICO) - collapsed.

Trinidad last year had pledged US$100 million to the rescue effort, under the Manning administration, as part of a plan being worked out with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and other Caribbean governments, who agreed to partner with investors to form a new company to assume British American's liabilities.

But the new Kamla Persad-Bissessar government withdrew from the arrangement in December.

Gonsalves spoke of the new difficulties during a 'consultation' radio programme, as his government formulates the 2011 budget to be laid before Parliament later this month.

"If you had asked me the 23rd of May or the morning of the 24th of May last year, I would have told you 'Yes, we have an arrangement going, ourselves and the Eastern Caribbean and Trinidad and Tobago - the Patrick Manning government - which was prepared to put US$100 million to help us in bringing back British American'," he said.

Gonsalves, who is also St Vincent's finance minister, said that the OECS would have contributed US$75m in the British American, and an investor out of North America US$30m to US$40m.

" ... I had outlined how that was going to work. But, the new government in Trinidad and Tobago, they took a while in telling us what they were doing, and on the 8th of December they tell us they are not participating in the new company," he said.

Gonsalves said the Persad-Bissessar administration announced that it wanted to work with the Caribbean Development Bank and OECS to "to build a fund" in CARICOM.

"But, at the moment, it is fairly amorphous; it isn't well shaped. So, the change in the government in Trinidad and Tobago has given us a big setback on British American," he said.

The passing of former Barbados prime minister David Thompson late last year also "downed the operation in relation to CLICO," he added.

Appeal for patience

Gonsalves, who appealed for the patience of Vincentians, said he was perusing a document received Wednesday, January 12 from technical people in the region on the possibilities for rescue.

"I say this: If we don't find a regional solution to British American, CARICOM is going to have a lot of problems, because people's money was taken and CL Financial was the parent company to British American," said Gonsalves.

"They bought a lot of real estate in places like Miami. They over-leveraged these assets; they took a lot of money from the OECS and put them in facilities in Trinidad investments," he said.

British American had tapped funds from its OECS subsidiaries to fund a methanol plant in Trinidad and to buy 6,000 acres of undeveloped lands in the US for US$600 million (EC$1.62 billion).

"Now, they can't have those facilities and investments and be selling them ... but we don't get any benefit," Gonsalves said.

"Now, that is going to cause a lot of problems and I don't have any smoke in my eyes about this. I am very unsentimental about this matter. I am just looking forward to the interest of the annuity holders and the policyholders, the people who put their money in British American, and then, of course, in CLICO," Gonsalves said.

He said Trinidad was still willing to collaborate on a solution but the "contours" of the plan "are not yet properly spelt out".

The Trinidad government has announced a bailout plan in that country, which would cap payouts to CLICO clients on short-term investments and mutual funds at TT$75,000 (US$12,500), but the issue appears heading for the courts after a group accused the Persad-Bissessar administration of ruining the lives of policyholders with the new measure.

Timberlee has been under the ward21 banner for some time now and should still be apart of the group that includes Tifa and Natalie Storm. Timber has been seen around the place up close and personal with the Tattoo God himself Vybz Kartel. One can only speculate as to where the influence came from for this Tattoo business. Some raggae fan is not very fond of the fact that Ms Timberlee is endorsing and gettingvolved in promoting this non Jamaican cultural behaviour.

Vampires aren't the only ones who worry about the sun rising. After living in complete darkness for a chunk of winter, one might think Greenland citizens would be happy to finally see sunlight. But instead, the first sight of sun sent residents of Ilulissat, a town on the western coast, into a panic, with good reason - the sun supposedly rose two days early.

According to LiveScience, Ilulissat is about three degrees north of the Arctic Circle - where the sun doesn't set during summer solstice, and the sun doesn't rise on winter solstice. In other words, people living near this region experience winters without any sunlight. Ilulissat normally sees its first sunrise on January 13th - this year, the sun rose on January 11th instead.

Residents of a community in St Ann claim they have been cowering in fear for the past couple of months, thanks to the actions of a crippled man who they say is the leader of a gang which has been picking trouble.

While a number of police sources from the parish say they are yet to hear about the crippled gangster and his cronies, residents say it will be just a short wait until they do.

Tales of residents with whom THE STAR spoke, yesterday painted the rather unusual picture of a gun-toting 30-odd-year-old man whose mobility is limited to that of a wheelchair, but who has the backing of a number of 'cross' young men to make up for his handicap.

The man lost his legs during a car accident some five years ago, residents said.

"Yes mi dear, is a wheelchair man a run di place, him and him boys dem have di place a way to ... Mi nuh know how dem get hot suh though, dem and every other crew round di place inna tings," one resident Mr Iris* explained, before adding that it is that situation which has them in fear.

"Wi nuh use to di war thing inna dem place yah, and now man all a send threat seh man from roun here cyaa go some other place because our dads a diss dem," another resident, a 24-year-old man added.

forced to sit

THE STAR was told of an incident which occurred over a week ago and involved a teenage girl who was held and forced to sit on the crippled man's lap.

The girl, who is from an adjoining community, is said to have returned with male relatives who reportedly brandished guns and promised to pay a visit to those who were responsible for the act.

"Dem see di girl a pass and through she neva ansa dem when dem call to har dem hol' har and mek she sit inna dem so called boss lap and all did a tell har fi whine pon him," Mr Irissaid. "Di girl go weh an come back with har family dem and is a lucky thing seh when dem go pon di corner everybody gone. Is a yute weh not even know weh an gwaan dem hold and a ask bout it. A di same girl affi beg fi di yute."

They also spoke of another popular incident which occurred at a recent party. The crippled man is said to have thrown liquor on another man who he alleged to have been staring at him.

When THE STAR contacted Detective Corporal Anthony Lampart of the Area 2 police, he urged the residents to contact the police and give the information they have so investigations can be launched.

"I am not saying it is not so but I haven't heard of this man but I know from time to time things can take place which don't reach our ears. In a case like this, I would ask the residents to help us protect them by giving us some information," he said.

One British psychologist theorizes that yesterday, January 17, is the most depressing day of the year.

Psychologist Cliff Arnall has developed a complicated equation on happiness, and contends that the combination of dreary weather, debt from the holidays and broken New Years resolutions add up to make the third Monday of January the saddest day of 2011.

The day has been deemed Blue Monday, and was a Twitter trending topic Monday morning.

By a similar equation, the same psychologist finds June 17th will be the happiest day of the year.

WHY CANT WE REMEMBER BEING BORN?

January 13, 2011
Started By dark_law10 Comments

Researchers have only just begun to investigate children's memory capabilities and have yet to find an exact reason why childhood amnesia occurs. In fact, research on childhood amnesia in the past few decades has introduced more questions about the complex details of how childhood memory works.

For a long time, researchers believed that childhood amnesia was because babies' brains are not fully developed until they are 3 years old, after which memory functions develop rapidly to adult levels. However, psychologists now say that children as young as 3 months old are capable of forming long-term memories. They say, however, that only those memories that are implicit or unconscious will last. Explicit or episodic memories, like the memory of our own birth, don't make it past the age of 3.

hmm i think we cant remember being born because when we are born we are completely blank to the world, we hadnt yet learn anything to use as a checkpoint for our memories so everything floats by us with no hope of recognition

Allegedly running what the prosecutor calls "a house of horrors," a Philadelphia physician, Kermit Barron Gosnell, was charged Wednesday with murder and other offenses related to illegal, late-term abortions.

The doctor is accused of causing the death of one of his female patients and killing seven viable babies in illegal abortions, Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams said.

The babies were born alive in the sixth, seventh and eighth months of pregnancy, but their spinal cords were allegedly severed with scissors, Williams said in a statement.

Nine other people who worked in the west Philadelphia medical office, including Gosnell's wife and sister-in-law, also were charged, Williams said. The practice, called the Women's Medical Society, served mostly low-income minority women for years, he said.

Williams provided a grisly scenario of the shuttered abortion clinic: A search of the office last year by authorities found bags and bottles holding aborted fetuses scattered throughout the building. Jars containing the severed feet of babies lined a shelf. Furniture and equipment was *la*hd-stained, dusty and broken.

In an interview with CNN, Williams described the abortion clinic as "horrific" and providing "botched and illegal abortions."

"It was a house of horrors beyond any type of definition or explanation I can humbly try to give," Williams told CNN. "And it's very sad for the women that were there, that were subjected to such horrific and barbaric -- I would say medical treatment but it wasn't medical -- treatment.

"My grasp of the English language doesn't really allow me to fully describe how horrific this clinic was -- rotting bodies, fetal remains, the smell of urine throughout, *la*hd-stained," Williams continued.

He said women patients were often "very poor."

"The doctor gained a reputation. People far and wide knew that he performed abortions at any time," Williams said.

Williams described one of the alleged infant deaths.

"The baby had been born and was on a cold steel table and murdered by using -- there's no medical basis for snipping or taking scissors and putting them into the neck and cutting, severing the spinal cord. It's just homicide. It's just murder," Williams told CNN.

Gosnell, 69, is not a board-certified obstetrician or gynecologist, Williams said.

Originally, he said, the clinic used another doctor as a consultant so it could receive a license to perform abortions in 1979.

Two primary state agencies, the Department of Health and the Department of State, have oversight, Williams said Wednesday at a news conference.

But a grand jury investigation found that health and licensing officials had received repeated reports about Gosnell's dangerous practices for two decades with no action taken, even after the agencies learned that women had died during routine abortions under Gosnell's care, the district attorney's statement said.

"What the (grand) jury found most troubling is that neither of those agencies took the time to investigate, to observe, to view, to go to the clinic itself since 1993," Williams said during the news conference.

Gosnell is also accused of reusing unsanitary instruments; performing procedures in filthy rooms, including some having litter boxes and animals present during operations; and allowing unlicensed employees to perform operations and administer anesthesia, including a teenage high school student, Williams said.

The doctor himself was seldom present, the district attorney charged. In his absence, untrained, unsupervised workers, including the teenage girl, routinely injected sedatives into women undergoing illegal late-term abortions, he alleged.

Among numerous charges, Gosnell is accused of third-degree murder in the death of 41-year-old Karnamaya Mongar, Williams said.Mongar died on November 20, 2009, when she was overdosed with anesthetics prescribed by Gosnell, he said.

Law enforcement officers came upon "the medical abuses" while investigating tips that the doctor had been illegally selling thousands of prescriptions for OxyContin and other narcotics to "patients" that he never examined, Williams said.

Leaving the audience wanting more is the goal of every musician, unless you're a musician in violence-torn Mexico.

Two members of local group La Excelencia were murdered in a Guadalajara bar early Monday morning after refusing to play more songs past closing time, El Occidental of Mexico reported.

Jonathan Martinez, 22, and Gustavo Alejandro, 35, were pronounced dead outside the Vida Divina nightclub, gunned down by unidentified assailants with suspected ties to the country's notorious drug gangs.

A third victim, identified as bar patron Leslie Soltero, 26, was taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to her ankle.

When La Excelencia's performance came to an end around 4 a.m. local time, four reportedly intoxicated and aggressive audience members demanded the musicians continue playing. Sensing trouble, the group extended its set by two songs, but was eventually forced to pull the plug by the bar's owner, according to El Occidental.

Out of nowhere, one of the instigators threw a grenade at the stage. The explosion injured one person and had panicked customers running for the exits.

Martinez and Alejandro were among those who fled the bar, but they were met at the front door by a hail of bullets, presumably from the same four men who had ha****ed them earlier.

By the time police arrived at the scene, the killers had already escaped by car. No witnesses were able to identify the getaway vehicle.

NY Daily News

Twenty-three years after being snatched as an infant, the victim of a hospital kidnapping cracked the cold case herself when doubts about her bogus "mom" led her home.

Carlina White - just 19 days old when her late-night abduction by a phony nurse stunned the city - was reunited last weekend with her overjoyed biological mother, father and other relatives.

"I'm overwhelmed. I'm just happy. It's like a movie; it's all brand new to me," White told the Daily News Wednesday night as she arrived at LaGuardia Airport for the second reunion with her birth mom.

"Is it really happening?" her incredulous mom, Joy White, wondered after decades of prayers were answered. "I always dreamed this.

It was a stunning and unexpected resolution to one of the NYPD's most frustrating cases: a kidnapper casually carrying an infant out of Harlem Hospital and into the wind.

The last time Joy White and her father, Carl Tyson laid eyes on their chubby-cheeked child, Carlina was just 21 inches long, weighed 8 pounds and had a fever of 104. It was Aug. 4, 1987 - and it wasn't until Jan. 4, 2011, that their now 23-year-old baby girl was able to let them know she was safe.

"I feel like I don't know who I am!" she told staffers at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in a heartbreaking call around Christmas.

Center officials, long familiar with the White case, launched an investigation that confirmed Carlina's suspicions.

"This young woman gets all the credit," said center President Ernie Allen. "She felt it. Now she could have been just wrong - but in this case, we were able to help her get to the truth."

While Carlina and her once-distraught family were elated by their reunion, there was also anger at the woman who snatched the baby.

"I want her to suffer," Joy White said of the kidnapper. "I want her to do some time, like I suffered for 23 years."

Childhood filled with lies

Carlina was raised in Bridgeport, Conn., under an alias, Nejdra Nance. She told White that the woman she believed was her mother used phony IDs and Social Security numbers.

Joy White said Carlina told her the woman was a drug user who abused her - once hitting her in the face with a shoe - and often left her alone to baby-sit her younger "brother."

A Bridgeport woman named Mary Pettway confirmed that her daughter, Cassandra, had raised Carlina. She refused to discuss the relationship further.

Cassandra Pettway lives in Georgia, and Mary Pettway said she and Carlina were with her at Christmas.

John McCain may not support all of Obama's policies, but he has high praise for the President.

John McCain may not support all of Obama's policies, but he has high praise for the

President.

The old John McCain was back Sunday, writing a gallant tribute to President Obama - and delivering a veiled rebuke to former running mate Sarah Palin.

The Arizona senator who ran against Obama and was clearly deeply embittered by his loss, praised the President's call in Arizona for greater civility as a "terrific speech."

Obama, he said, "comforted and inspired the country."

"We should be mindful as we argue about our differences that so much more unites than divides us," McCain wrote in The Washington Post.

"Our political discourse should be more civil than it currently is, and we all, myself included, bear some responsibility for it not being so."

Taking on those heated voices from the Tea Party fringes who call Obama a Nazi, a usurper, or an outright agent of evil, McCain wrote:

"I disagree with many of the President's policies, but I believe he is a patriot sincerely intent on using his time in office to advance our country's cause.

"I reject accusations that his policies and beliefs make him unworthy to lead America or opposed to its founding ideals," he wrote.

That stands in stark contrast to Palin, who has called Obama's policies "un-American" and just last week accused him of being "hellbent on weakening America."

McCain offered some support to Palin, whose gun-happy political rhetoric was blamed by some for the Tucson massacre by a lone nut with no clear political agenda.

"Imagine how it must feel to have watched one week ago the incomprehensible massacre of innocents...and to have heard in the coverage of that tragedy voices accusing you of complicity in it," he wrote.

But then McCain appeared to chide Palin's defensive response, in which she rejected calls to tone down the political vitriol as attempts to "muzzle dissent."

McCain wrote: "It is not beyond us to do better; to behave more modestly and courteously and respectfully toward one another."

Influential Washington Post columnist Dan Balz said the column should be the beginning of a thaw between McCain and Obama, who have been wary adversaries since 2008.

"Not since his gracious concession speech on the night of the election has McCain spoken so generously of his rival," Balz wrote. "Obama should not let the opportunity pass to reach out to McCain in return."
