Classes at the Christiana High School in Manchester were yesterday suspended after an acting vice-principal (VP) was attacked by two female students. In a bid to show their disgust and disapproval, teachers at the institution demanded an emergency meeting with the admistration, causing an early end to the second shift of school. Teachers at the school told THE STAR that during devotions, shortly after 1 p.m., the acting vice-principal reprimanded a female student who was wearing make-up. The VP reportedly told the student to go to the bathroom, and attempted to escort her there when she refused. THE STAR was told that the student freed herself from the VP's grip and pushed her away. The student was, however, ,eventually taken to the bathroom where she was told to wash her face. A friend, who was on the outside, demanded to be allowed inside, and when this was denied, she reportedly pushed the VP out of her way. According to the source, "she started a fist to fist with the VP." Disgruntled teachers The teachers told THE STAR that they "are very disgruntled" and added, "The VP is a disciplinarian and if that can happen to her, what would happen to another person? That is a no-no. We will not stand for it." The teacher also suggested that the rest of the school week could be disrupted if they are not satisfied with how the matter is dealt with. "We won't be satisfied with the meeting until we hear something tangible. We are not pleased and we doubt classes will continue like normal for the rest of the week." They were also concerned with the general problem of indiscipline they face daily, and called on the Ministry of Education to intervene. Principal of the school, John Beckford, admitted that there had been a disturbance at the school. He said no action had been taken against the girls and said the matter would be investigated today. He also said the issue would be referred to the school board for a decision to be taken. Police officers from the Christian Police Station, who visited the school after the incident, arrested and charged four male students after they were searched and found with offensive weapons. They were later given bail. Director of communications at the Ministry of Education, Charlene Ashley, told THE STAR, "We are investigating the situation. However, yet again, we condemn any attacks on our teachers because it is an attack on the education system itself." Series of initiatives She also pointed out that the ministry recently unveiled a series of initiatives that are aimed at creating and maintaining "a safe and secure teaching and learning environment". She also pointed out that citizens have a role to play in ensuring that such an environment is created and sustained, and urged persons to have respect for teachers and authority figures in the school system.

HARDWINE

February 25, 2008
Started By linko2 Comments

Low patronage did not prevent those who attended from fully enjoying Hardwine at the Pantry in New Kingston on Saturday night.

Up until as late as 2 a.m., only a third of the venue was occupied but this did change when the party arrived at its end at 3:30 a.m.

When The Star arrived at 12 a.m. it was smooth sailing through the gate and within the venue. The selector played Alison Hinds' Roll it Gal and that had the women in total trance, but sped up the pace with Vegas' Hot Wuk.

He went back to soca and played Jouvert Mas which had the people jumping around. There were even two women who seemed to be gyrating on each other but this was somehow overlooked.

Kurt Riley, from FAME FM, wasted no time when he took the turntables. He immediately unleashed One More Time by Machel Montano. The frenzy he created only increased when he played Wukkin It and Bachelor. Wata, Soca Warrior and Bumpa Catch a Fire only added to the mood.

The people got a chance to cool down when Rags Up was played on a one drop rhythm. Slow movement was the order of the day when Riley played Give Praise by the legendary calypsonian David Rudder.

Mere repetition

DJ Billy started on a good note when he played Munga's Wine Pon It on a soca beat but it was just mere repetition when he played Roll it Gal that was being heard for the third time and was played twice after. He managed to bring the venue to a total cool during his set.

Riley went back on the turntables and brought the place back to craziness when he gave them some soca hits from the past like Foot Steps, Swinging Engine, Follow The Leader and Mad Bull Fever. This was well appreciated by the people as they jumped, waved and 'got on bad'.

He really struck a chord with the audience when he dropped some of the hottest songs in dancehall. He made the ladies Back It Up for Beenie Man, while Mavado gave them a 'squeeze'. By this time, the few men who did not have dancing partners seemed out of place. Nonetheless, some took Erup's advice to 'click their fingers'. The real madness started when Riley played some dancehall hits from the '90s. One man spread his shirt on the ground and laid down then his partner jumped on him and started to 'get on bad'. They also danced in some extremely acrobatic positions. It also became commonplace to see the women's legs wrapped around their men's waists. Lady Saw was a hit with Back Shot, Fling It Up and Stab Up the Mt.

The same mood was maintained when Aidonia's Ukku, Beenie Man's Hum Hum and Anthony B's Tease Har was played. The venue returned to calm at 3:15 a.m. with Rupie's Tempted to Touch.

Raul Castro named Cuban president
Raul Castro sitting in the National Assembly
Raul Castro now has to grapple with Cuba's economic problems
Raul Castro has been unanimously selected to succeed his brother Fidel as leader by Cuba's National Assembly.

Fidel Castro stepped down last week after nearly half a century in charge.

Raul has in effect been president since Fidel had major surgery in July 2006. It is understood that he was the only nominee in a vote seen as a formality.

But the real shock came when he chose 78-year-old Politburo hardliner Machado Ventura as vice-president, says the BBC's Michael Voss in Havana.

The commander in chief of the Cuban revolution is unique, Fidel is Fidel, as we all know well, he is irreplaceable Raul Castro Profile: Raul Castro

There had been speculation that Raul Castro, aged 76, would name one of Cuba's younger generation of communist leaders as his number two.

But he instead opted for one of the original leaders of Cuba's communist revolution.

What this means for the prospects for change remains unclear, our correspondent says.

Economic challenge

In an address to the nation, following the behind-closed-doors vote, Raul Castro said the Cuban government would continue to consult Fidel Castro, 81, on major decisions of state - a move backed by the National Assembly deputies.

Cubans in Havana discuss the priorities of their next president In pictures

Raul Castro paid tribute to his older brother as he accepted the presidency and said that he was accepting the job on the understanding that Fidel Castro would remain as the "commander in chief of the revolution", a title he was given during the 1959 uprising.

"The commander in chief of the Cuban revolution is unique, Fidel is Fidel, as we all know well, he is irreplaceable," Raul Castro said.

Our correspondent says Raul Castro now has to steer the Caribbean island through un-charted waters in an unpredictable period of economic and political renewal.

Before Sunday's session, Raul Castro had suggested implementing major economic reforms and "structural changes".

HAVE YOUR SAY
The Cuban people need international assistance to uplift the standards of life in all fields. Only a young *la*hd will think in theses terms, otherwise the older will continue to act wickedly and selfishly.
Sailani, Karachi, Pakistan
He has worked to ensure a smooth political transition, keeping the army loyal to the regime and strengthening the Communist Party's hold by introducing reforms and weeding out corrupt officials.

He has also had the advantage of continued economic support from Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in the form of millions of barrels of cheap oil, our correspondent adds.

Mr Chavez was quick to congratulate Raul Castro on his appointment, leading a standing ovation to the new Cuban president on his weekly television programme in Caracas.

"Let's applaud Raul, who is a comrade, a companion, more than the brother of Fidel," Mr Chavez said.

Mr Castro said that Venezuela would continue to support the communist state.

Letter announcement

Fidel Castro, who has ruled Cuba since leading a revolution in 1959, announced his retirement in a letter published on the website of the Cuban Communist Party's newspaper Granma last week.

He said he had not stepped down after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery in 2006 because he had had a duty to the Cuban people to prepare them for his absence.

But retirement, he added, would not stop him from carrying "on fighting like a soldier of ideas", and he promised to continue writing essays entitled Reflections of Comrade Fidel.

Though he has not been seen in public for 19 months, the government occasionally releases photographs and pre-edited video of him meeting visiting leaders from around the world.

I almost married a gold-digger

February 25, 2008

am a Jamaican who lives in Texas. I recently broke up with a Jamaican woman who lives on the island. I found out that she was using me for money and as a means to enter America. I had filed for a visa and was about to get married to this gold digger and America-seeking hound. What I am saying, pastor, is this. Please, let all, the Jamaican men living abroad know that most, not all, of the women in Jamaica who are single and claim to love, have the great USA in their eyes and will do anything, including getting married, to touch down here in the States.

I am so happy that I saw the light before I got married to this woman. The visa was approved and I was on my way down to Jamaica, only to find out that this woman was living a double life. It makes me now see why a woman, in her 30s, living in Jamaica, without children, working for low monthly wages, and who has a bag of life stories to tell, was still single.

Please advise all Jamaican men living abroad to be aware of these women, because all they see is the red, white and blue colours. They are not in love. They will even lie down to migrate and pretend to be angels or queens. This is a warning to single Jamaican men living abroad. Be careful who you meet from yard.

Pastor, have a great and wonderful day. Keep up the good work.

S.S., Texas, USA

Dear S.S.,

It is regrettable that you generalised and tried to give the impression that most of our Jamaican women will do just about anything to live in the United States of America.

I do not believe that is true. You should also bear in mind that while many Jamaican women would love to live in America, there are also many Jamaican men living in Jamaica who have fooled women in America, pretended that they were in love with them, and these women have married them and filed for them and after they have received their permanent status, they ill-treated these women. So, I do not want you to behave as if it is only the women who are not truthful, the same can be said of men.

Pastor

On Nove****er 4, 2007 at University Hospital, Hamilton County, Cincinnati, an 11 year old gave birth to a baby girl.

The troubling part of this tale of children having children is that the newborn's DNA matched that of her 11 year old mother's "step-dad." This new 'child mom' was impregnated by her own mother's boyfriend when she was only age 10.

An intense investigation was set off following the baby's birth, that in itself was shocking to the Department of Job and Family Services, because the child's mother was so young.

On Wednesday, prosecutors were in Hamilton County Dependency Court to
discuss the future of both children at what is called a status session
where an update on both mother and baby was disclosed.

While court was in session, Lockland police were in Colu****us talking to Michael Chaffer, the 40 year old, whose DNA matches that of the newborn. In jail for an unrelated matter, Chaffer now faces charges for impregnating and sexually molesting a girl under the age of 13, Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor, Lee Slocum said.

"Unfortunately sexual abuse is pretty common in the cases we see," JFS Director, Moira Wier said, "But it is unusual and extremely sad to see a case where a 10 year old becomes pregnant." She added, "This is an example of why everyone in communities need to be extremely vigilant about watching for the signs of abuse and [notifying authorities.]"

The University Hospital notified JFS of the birth because the mother was so young. The baby and her 11 year old mom were allowed to remain at home while the JFS investigated, but there was a condition; that no men be in the home. However, despite this order, on January 4 Chaffer was found in the home by a social worker and found in violation of the JFS order. He was arrested on a charge of obstruction of official business, as he got in the way of police entering the home.

JFS promptly removed both infant and her adolescent mother from the home.

Dressed in a T-shirt hoody, jeans and sporting a ponytail, the new mom spoke about school, music and Disney video games as she sat beside her mom waiting for the hearing to begin. As prosecutors chatted about the possibilities of her losing her baby, the 11 year old wiped away tears from her eyes.

Hamilton court prosecutors want a court designation that the 11 year old girl was abused. They allege the mother did not care for her daughter by allowing Chaffer near her. Prosecutors also argued and won for the infant to be taken from her young mom because they say a sixth grade student is too young to care for a baby.

The baby is now in foster care, while her child-mom is being taken care of by relatives. Her mother is not allowed to see the baby and can only see her daughter when supervised by social workers.

7 Shot at wake

February 25, 2008

Residents of Water Lane, Clarendon, are living in fear after an alleged failed attempt to kill a murder witness resulted in seven persons being shot, two fatally, at a wake on Thursday night.

Police report that at about 8 p.m. people were at the wake in Banks, Clarendon, when heavily armed men opened fire on the gathering. The two died while the other five were taken to hospital where they were admitted in stable condition.

Sources at the scene told MZJA that the persons shot were not the intended targets. MZJA understands that an alleged witness of the murder of five people in Water Lane last year was at the wake and gunmen were trying to get him.

In December, five persons were shot dead and a teenage girl abducted and raped causing several residents to move out of Water Lane. Those killed in that incident were Lerline Lewis, 41; Shamar Davis, 21; Delroy Riley, 48; Deloris Green, 32, and Daniel Parkinson, 40, all from Water Lane.

Residents alleged that gunmen entered the house, where the wake was being held, in search of the witness and when he was not found they opened fire on the residents, shooting some.

Dead is bus conductor Shevon Rivers, 21, of Banks and Tennyson Cunningham, 17, also of Banks. Injured are two females ages 24 and 36 and three males ages 33 and two 17 year-olds.

night terrors

In light of this latest attack, residents say that they are afraid to go out at nights for fear of being shot. This is the second attack at a wake within a month.

Mayor of May Pen, Milton Brown, called for help to deal with the increased number of murders in the parish. "These levels of killings in the parish are unacceptable and the authorities need to move urgently in order to stop this growing trend," he said.

In addition, he said that if crime was allowed to continue then it would also affect the development of the parish. "If the levels of violence continues to trend in this way it can have a serious impact on the development of the parish," he said.

But, while the mayor called for help, the murders in the parish continue to increase with yet another person being killed yesterday.

According to CCN liaison officer for the parish constable Georgia Richards, "about 10:30 Friday morning Jason Francis and another man was on a construction site in Bucks Common when a car drove up and men alighted firing shots hitting both persons. Francis died on the spot while the other man was rushed to the hospital where he was admitted in serious condition. Close inspection of Francis' body by the police revealed that Francis also sustained several stabs wounds."

The Clarendon Homicide Unit is investigating both cases of murders and shooting.

The Story of George Stiebel, Jamaica's first black millionaire
There was every indication at a very early stage that George Stiebel was destined to lead an intriguing life. Born to a Jamaican housekeeper, and a German Jew in the 1820s, George was subject to a range of criticisms and harsh treatment from his peers as a result of his mixed parentage. School was therefore not as fulfilling an experience as it should have been, and he quit the classroom at age fourteen to become a carpenters apprentice. George quickly developed a flair for carpentry, and by age 19 he played an integral role in the reconstruction of the famous Ferry Inn, between Kingston and Spanish Town.

In the 1840's, George's father gave him start up capital to purchase a ship, which he began using to transport cargo between North and South America. Shortly after he purchased two additional ships to develop his new business venture in the Caribbean, including Cuba where a revolution was in high gear. He realized that the island would be ideal to undertake a lucrative gun-trading ring. While he did manage to make respectable profits from trading guns, he also fell in trouble with the law for his activities.

In 1851, George's life took a turn for the better when he married long time sweetheart Magdalene Baker, daughter of a Moravian Missionary. Soon after their son, Sigismund, named after George's father, was born. Two years later a girl, Theresa, joined the Stiebel family. Five years after their marriage, his ships were caught in a terrible storm, which destroyed the vessels. Unfortunately Stiebel was aboard one of the ships which sank off the coast of Venezuela. He managed to survive the wreckage and luckily he had the foresight to secure all his money which was stored in a leather belt. Stiebel's tenacity soon began to show results, because shortly after arriving in Venezuela he became a peddler, and with his savings he purchased a mule to assist in transporting his goods. His misfortune at sea quickly dulled when he began trading gold in Venezuela. He invested in a gold mine with his friends, and fifteen years later in 1873 the business was showing huge profits. George Stiebel had undoubtedly made an impressive stake in the gold mining business and the accolade awarded to him as Jamaica's first millionaire of African descend seemed very deserving and appropriate. His achievements were shattered however with the death of his son, and he returned home to Jamaica.

Stiebel's love for his country and sense of civic duty kicked in almost immediately after his return to Jamaica. It is reported that he purchased 99 properties (it was illegal to own 100 properties during the period) including two sugar estates, a wharf at Church Street, Great Salt Pond and a Cattle Pen named Minard, in St. Ann.

He built a lavish home at Minard, which became the familys favorite vacation getaway. In 1881 he commissioned the services of contractor Charles P. Lazarus to build the magnificent Devon House. The house boasted a library, gaming room, ballroom, sitting rooms, a sewing room, dining room, and bedrooms. The kitchen (now occupied by the Brick Oven) was located towards the back away from the House.

In addition to investing in property in Jamaica, Stiebel was a philanthropist, assisting the poor and disadvantaged, as well as exhibiting continuous interest in the socio-economic state of the country. Several civic authorities and local groups invited Stiebel to sit on their Boards including the Jamaica Permanent Benefit Society, the Jamaica Co-operative Fruit Insurance Company, the Board of Education and the Kingston and St. Andrew Union Poorhouse. Stiebel's most noted civic duty came when he was named a Justice of the Peace (JP) and later Custos of St. Andrew. It was during his tenure as Custos that the Great Exhibition of 1891 was staged in Kingston. The Exhibition, which sought to introduce tourism to the island, required extensive financing which the government was unable to undertake. Stiebel was among a small group of entrepreneurs who loaned the Government funds to stage the exhibition. In recognition of his services in the interest of the island, Her Majesty the Queen bestowed on Stiebel the honour of Companion of the Most Distinguished Order (C.M.G.).

Over the next ten years George Stiebel lived happily at Devon House with his wife Magdalene, and surrounded by his grandchildren. The Stiebels also did an impressive job of holding lavish parties for friends and family. It was not surprising then that they employed a large staff which reportedly included four gardeners, two house maids, a butler, cook, laundress, grooms and coachman. Servants' Quarters were located in the space now used as the property's commercial complex.

Sadness again befell Devon House when Stiebel's wife Magdalene died in October 1892. Magdalene was buried at the St. Andrew Parish Cemetery under a grey granite to****stone with a white marble cross-wreathed in white marble flowers. It is said that at the time Stiebel imported enough grey granite from Scotland to bury his entire family. Tragedy
continued to mark the Stiebel family. In 1895 his grandson Douglas died of typhoid, and only a week later his son in law Richard Hill Jackson (who served as Mayor of Kingston) passed away.

George Stiebel died in 1896 at age 75. Stiebel's generous spirit lived on even after his death, as he ensured that his family was well taken care of. His daughter for example was granted an annual annuity of three thousand pounds, and she was assured a permanent place at Devon House while she was alive. A total of ten thousand pounds was to be allotted to each of his grandchildren once they turned 21. The Stiebel- Jacksons occupied Devon House until 1922 following the death of Theresa Stiebel- Jackson.
Beres Hammond is alive! Rumours of singer's death untrue, says manager Francine Black, Staff Reporter That's the word from his management team who are refuting rumours circulating that the singer is dead. Over the weekend a report began circulating in the United States, including on radio stations, claiming that Hammond had died. Several curious and shocked callers locally and overseas contacted our newsroom to determine if there was any truth to this report. Although neither Beres nor his manager agreed to an interview with THE STAR, a representative from his camp said the artiste was alive and well. "His manager just spoke to him and he is OK," the representative told THE STAR on Sunday morning. The representative said they had also, been receiving calls but the rumours are not true as the artiste was definitely alive. THE STAR has not been able to establish the source of the rumours. Heart attack Among the reasons rumoured to be the cause of Hammond's death are a heart attack and a car accident. One person who spoke to THE STAR from abroad said that Real Deal 94.3 FM, a radio station in Mount Vernon, New York, had made an announcement, claiming to have confirmed reports that the artiste was dead. In addition, the caller said the radio station, which has a target audience of Caribbean nationals in the United States, had announced that it would be holding an on-air tribute honouring the life of Beres Hammond. When THE STAR news team visited the station's website, at minutes to 6 p.m., which offered live streaming of its station online, Beres Hammond hits were being played. Hammond is one of Jamaica's most popular artistes having been in the music business for more than 30 years. He is well known for hits such as Rock Away, One Step and Putting Up Resistance

Rose Lane man shot dead by gunmen

Dane Brown, 28, of Roses Lane in Hendon, Norwood, St James, was shot dead by gunmen while he stood at his gate last Thursday night. Reports from the CCN's liaison officer for St James are that about 11:45 a.m., residents in the area heard explosions and alerted the police. Investigators who responded, found Brown suffering from gunshot wounds beside his car at his gate. He was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Montego Bay police are investigating.
Dancehall's bad boy David "Mavado" Brooks will be setting his sights on doing good when he headlines the 2008 Soul Rebellion event on March 11th in Negril, Jamaica. Meeting much success with the release of his debut album "Gangsta For Life: The Symphony of David Brooks" back in 2007 (VP Records), Mavado has since shared the fruits of his labor with his homeland by launching his "Connect Jamaica" charity, where he donates computers to local schools.

Mavado3.jpgThis made him the perfect candidate for the face of Soul Rebellion - the festival with a cause, where proceeds from each fundraising event are invested back into the local economy in Jamaica. By targeting the spring break crowd, Soul Rebellion hosts a number of unique events and concerts that are geared towards raising funds to help rebuild local schools and strengthen local communities, long after the tourists depart.

Through the "Buy-A-Brick" program, Soul Rebellion works with the Negril Education Environment Trust (NEET) to restore local schools. Spring breakers can buy a brick and decorate it with their names or Greek letters, and those bricks are then used to rebuild schools, thereby creating a positive change in the social and economic landscape of the tourist destination.

Reggae Academy Awards tonight

While many industry insiders the pomp and tedium of the major awards show a bit discomfiting, it hasnt stunted the interest any in this years inaugural Reggae Academy Awards.

Coming at the tail end of an awards season which included the IRIE, EME, Youth View, the Reggae Academy Awards, which will take place today at the National Indoor Sports Centre, is considered by insiders as the crown jewel. Heres hoping that this award show wont be another boring, too-long self-assessment of self-involved, self-obsessed clique of musicians, deejays, spin doctors, publicists and industry players.

We hope that this show is an exhilarating production which will show that we can really do our own thing.

Tarrus Riley, Staying true to the Reggae Vibes

By: Kemesha Bolton

riley_tarrus.jpgAs we celebrate Black History/Reggae month, YardFlex takes time out to highlight some of the many persons who have contributed to the development of Reggae Music and empowerment of Black people world wide.

With these values and accomplishments in mind, YardFlex spoke with Tarrus Riley, one man whose music empowers the woman. He sings in a most enthralling and heartfelt way, reminding her that 'She's Royal.'

Just as poet John Bodely paints a realistic and uplifting picture in his verses of, 'A Strong Black Woman,' Tarrus draws for lyrics that inspire and elevate the woman. In 'A Strong Black Woman' Bodely wrote: "Regardless of blistered hands, aching back, weary knees, disfiguring frown, she was not allowed to sit down..." and ends with, "...a woman who is now henceforth and forever grateful, still fine and forever free."

In explaining what prompted his creation of "She's Royal," Tarrus Riley explained to YardFlex, "It's our culture and our reality. It's about [reversing] slavery. It is to make our women feel good about themselves. They are all Queens."

Of Reggae Month, Tarrus said, "I love it all for Reggae, we need more than one month for this, so that men like Delroy Wilson and Junior Byles can get the recognition dem really deserve."

Tarrus started doing music at age 13. He says "I preferred to DJ. I used to go to de studio wit mi fahda (Jimmy Riley), but mi neva interested in singing. Mi used to tink dat was a old man ting so mi listen Buju Banton, Shabba an dem man deh." He however learnt to love singing and after more than ten years at honing, developing and mastering his skills, is now one of the most sought after, reggae performers.

Tarrus feels indebted to his fans and accredits his immense success to them. It is not unusual to see him sitting patiently, signing autograph after autograph following a grueling show no matter how many fans line up. He said "mi grateful to mi fans. Mi a big fan of mi fans. Is dem buy mi CD, di music business belongs to dem. Dem buy di ringtones an come a di stage shows, so mi love dem." He also stated that he loves to sing now, "a singy singy mi name so mi ago sing foreva for mi fans."

Taking the opportunity to address the controversial misunderstanding that took place recently in Antigua, Tarrus said, "All dat happen was, Dean tell di MC to come off de stage and allow de youth to perform and him go fi some a him frens. I did not get to perform for my fans and mi really sorry fi dat cause mi love dem [the fans]."

Tarrus Riley is currently working with Dean Fraser and says "Dean is like a father to mi and a bredda: but when di studio door close, I am di student and him a di teacher."

As writer of nearly all the lyrics for his songs, Tarrus also helps to create the rhythms on his guitar or piano. He has signed a two year distributing deal with VP Records, and is involved in all aspects of his career. "I have to make good business decisions so that my music can last," he stated.

Despite all the fame, Tarrus remains humble and true to the spirit and message of Reggae Music.

A woman called my house and told me that she had been dating my husband of 22 years, for about two years. I am a homemaker and we have four children. I have been his ball of string for the last four or five years, while he was trying to 'find himself'. Well now, pastor, enough is enough. He tells me he was waiting for an opportunity to end his friendship with her, but I can't help but wonder whenever he walks out the door. I was almost content to live as a roommate because we were so estranged, but now he acts like he needs me to help him break off the relationship with her. She keeps crying and he keeps trying to have a heart about the matter. I'm at my wits end! And tired of going around in circles. K.W., Texas, USA Dear K.W., I suggest that you continue to try to help your husband if you believe that he genuinely wants to end the relationship with the other woman. Both of you should go and see a family counsellor.

TIVOLI GARDENS yesterday reduced Portmore United's lead atop the Cash Plus Premier League standings to one point after notching a 2-0 win over last-place August Town at the Edward Seaga Stadium.

Sheldon Palmer and Jermaine Taylor scored for Tivoli, who are now on 43 points, stalking Portmore, who started the day three clear but were held to a 1-1 draw by third-place Waterhouse, who rallied from a goal down at Drewsland.

Waterhouse stayed third on 37 points, but just two ahead of Boys' Town, who jumped from sixth to fourth after blanking Seba 2-0 at Collie Smith Drive, relegating defending champions Harbour View and St Georges.

Arnett Gardens were also big winners, slamming Sporting Central 4-0 at Brancourt.

The Junglists' win moved them from 10th to eighth on 28 points in the standings, leaping past Reno and Sporting Central, sharing 26 points.

Defending champions Harbour View drew 2-2 at Reno and St Georges were held 0-0 by next-to-last Village at Lynch Park.

At Drewsland, Waterhouse rallied from a horrible first 30 minutes, during which they conceded a second- minute goal.

Early goal

However, Roberto Fletcher fired past Shawn Sawyers from inside the area in the 40th minute to cancel Anthony Bennett's early goal, a left-sided shot Maurice Evans turned into his own net shortly after the start.

Impatient Drewsland fans hurled abuse at the referees and their own players in a disorganised first 30 minutes, which forced coach Wayne Fairclough to quickly make alterations to his starting 3-2-4-1 formation.

Exploiting Waterhouse's vacant right-back with a quickly taken free kick, Portmore went ahead when Bennett, partnering Roen Nelson upfront, picked up the snap pass and cut inside from the left flank before firing a shot across Evans, which the 'keeper got a hand to but could not keep out of his goal.

A confused and disorganised Waterhouse were hardly able to leave their half, constantly losing possession to Portmore's pressing midfielders for the first 30 minutes.

Howell, whose foul on a Portmore attacker had led to the opening goal, looked out of sorts and had to be switched from a defensive to attacking position by Fairclough, creating breathing space for his tightly packed midfield.

Challenging

The move worked wonders for Waterhouse, who started stringing passes together. The homesters pulled level when midfielder Vincent Earle threaded a pass to Fletcher, who stumbled over a challenging defender but regained his footing to boot the ball past Sawyers, who had left his line to shut down the play.

A relieved Fairclough said his team has been getting off to shaky starts and needs to concentrate better.

"I believe, for the past couple games, we have not started with any zest and concentration," said Fairclough, who turned around the Drewsland team's fortunes immediately after taking over from Peruvian Danilo Barrigo near the end of the first round.

Fairclough said Howell's passing was badly off and he had to shift him from his defensive role.

"Howell was not getting his passes together and I had to push him to top midfield and ask Earle to drop back," he admitted.

Portmore's Linval Dixon said a draw was a good result even though they had come to take full points.

"We came wanting three points but never capitalised on our start," he said.

Britney Spears hospitalized again!

britneyspears2.jpgWhat's with Britney? For crying out loud, can't she get it together! For the second time this month, Britney Spears was rushed to the hospital by ambulance early Thursday morning. According to reports in the Los Angeles Times, Spears, 26, was physically removed from her home by police and put into an ambulance at around 1 a.m., then escorted to the UCLA Medical Center by a phalanx of more than a dozen motorcycle officers, two police cruisers and two police helicopters.

The action came as a result of yet another call for a "5150" hold for a mental-health evaluation, which means that Spears is considered a threat to herself or those around her, authorities told the paper. The motorcycles and a Los Angeles Fire Department ambulance swept through the gates of Spears' hilltop home in Studio City shortly after 1 a.m. California time, with a police helicopter hovering overhead, and removed the singer eight minutes later. Officers inside the home reportedly radioing to commanders that "the package is on the way out."

The Times reported that authorities said the action was prompted by a call they received from Spears' psychiatrist, and though it was unclear exactly when they received the call, the paper said it was apparent the operation had been carefully planned over a period of time. It was the second time police had rushed to the singer's home this week, following an incident Monday night when someone reported that a group of paparazzi were trespassing in the singer's gated community. No trespassers were found, but a number of paparazzi were given citations for illegal parking.lollollol

Obeah midwife

Dear Pastor,

I am a depressed 31-year-old woman who has been struggling to get pregnant for the last six years. I have been to a number of doctors. All of them said that there is nothing wrong with me and they don't know why I won't get pregnant. My boyfriend threatens to leave me if I don't go to an obeah woman and get a bath because maybe I am cursed. He doesn't have any children and his parents are nagging me for a grandchild.

I don't know what to do. I am so afraid that he will leave me. Should I go to the obeah woman?

S.B., St Elizabeth, Jamaica

Dear S.B.,

Why don't you tell this man who is pressuring you to have a child that if someone is cursed, it is him. If anybody needs the bath, let him go and get it. Don't you waste your time to go to any obeah woman. And tell him to tell his mother that you do not have the power to get yourself pregnant, and that good men don't consider that their women have to become pregnant to prove that they are women. He could be the problem. Perhaps he has low sperm count. Why doesn't he go to the doctor and check out himself?

It seems to me that you feel that you can't live without this man. It might be better for him not to be around than to nag you about something you cannot do for yourself. If he truly loves you, he would marry you and not try to pressure you to prove that you can become pregnant.

Pastor

john legend to jamaica

john_legend1.jpgKingston, Jamaica: The sultry soul singer John Legend has been added to the star packed line up for the Smile Jamaica-Africa Unite concert on Saturday February 23 at James Bond Beach.

The Smile Jamaica-Africa Unite concert will be the Grammy winner's third performance in Jamaica. Legend wowed Jamaican audiences at Reggae Sumfest as he performed alongside rapper Kanye West and he also headlined the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues festival. Legend exploded on the scene with Ordinary People. The Track and album were local and International hits. His follow up album spawned the chart topper Stay with You, a favourite of Jamaicans, Legend will have audiences singing along.

John Legend grew up in Ohio, surrounded by every musical influence from gospel to hip-hop. While attending university Legend found time to make his own music, whether it was recording his own albums, performing at talent shows and open mics, or directing the choir at a local church. In 1998, John got his first taste of success, playing piano on Everything is Everything off Lauryn's Hill's multiple-Grammy winning album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. In 2001, a college roommate introduced John to the then up-and-coming producer/artiste Kanye West. By 2002, Legend was part of West's creative team, appearing on albums by Talib Kweli, Common, Alecia Keys, Mary J Blige and on West's 2004 breakthrough The College Dropout.

Legend then burst unto the scene in 2004 stepping into the solo spotlight as a premier singer-songwriter-pianist-performer in his own right with his debut album Get Lifted. This was a critical and commercial triumph, earning John an astounding eight Grammy nominations - he won Best New Artiste, Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B album, selling more than three million copies worldwide.

Legend captured the hearts of his audiences with his boyish charm as well as his honest and daring approach in his lyrics to topics such as love and cheating. On that level he has connected with his fans in each and every arena he has performed at. Legend's success only continued with second album Once Again. The pop/soul album is fueled by intelligence, intuition, sensuality, spirit and creativity and includes tracks with artistes such as Raphael Saadiq, Kanye West, Craig Street and will.i.am. Once Again saw hit songs such as Save Room, Stormy and Where Did My Baby Go.

Even more so than he did on Get Lifted, John went boldly in his own creative direction on Once Again, opting to write, not from a marketing standpoint, but from his heart and soul and personal experience. The already iconic Legend is scheduled to perform at the Bob Marley tribute concert Smile Jamaica among other legends such as Bunny Wailer, Black Uhuru and the Marley sons: Stephen, Ziggy, Julian, Ky-Mani and Damian 'Junior Gong' Marley.

Smile Jamaica- Africa Unite Concert takes place Saturday February 23, 2008 at 8PM at James Bond Beach, Oraccabessa, St. Mary.

Gunmen invade Bartica Police Station, attack residents
Twelve killed, several injured
- escape with weapons and ammo

The mining community of Bartica was transformed into a virtual slaughter house last night, after scores of heavily-armed gunmen launched a brazen 60 minute attack in the heart of the community, killing 12 people, including three policemen and wounding five other people.
Eyewitnesses said that two of the policemen were slaughtered while huddling in cupboards after the gunmen stormed the station.
The third was gunned down outside the station. injured.jpg
Regional Chairman Holbert Knights also confirmed that five civilians were placed to lie facedown on the Transport and Harbour Stelling, located at First Avenue, Bartica, and then shot in their heads.
Those confirmed dead are Lance Corporal Zakhir, two other ranks identified only as Fredericks and Osbourne; Ervin Perreira, a 72-year-old security guard employed at CB&R Mining Enterprise in First Avenue, Edwin Gilkes.
The wounded include a Constable Campbell.
At press time, efforts were being made to transport the injured to Georgetown.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing the gunmen, numbering about 20, and brandishing assault rifles, driving through the streets in a police vehicle that they had taken from the station, and shooting wildly at civilians.
Regional Chairman Holbert Knights also confirmed that the gang eventually escaped, reportedly by boat, with arms and ammunition that they had taken from the station after storming the building.
There are also reports that the gunmen also carted off a safe containing a large quantity of gold that they had taken from a First Avenue jewellery store.
Eyewitnesses said that the surprise attack began at around 22:00 hrs, when the gunmen came ashore by boat near the Transport and Harbour wharf.
Reports said that on landing, the gang pounced on five labourers who were loading a Banks DIH vessel.
From all reports, the victims were ordered to lie on the wharf and then shot in their heads.
The gunmen then moved on to the Bartica Police Station, which is also located in First Avenue.
After shooting one of the ranks who was outside, the gunmen then ran into the building, reportedly mowing down the two terrified ranks who had hidden in cupboards. Kaieteur News understands that five ranks were in the station at the time and about eight more were in their barrack-rooms.
Kaieteur News was told that Constable Campbell was shot in the side but managed to conceal himself in the station until the gunmen left.
According to reports, the gang then removed several firearms as well as ammunition from the station. At the time, the station was equipped with shotguns, rifles and handguns, a source said. After leaving the station, some of the gunmen then boarded a police van that was in the compound.
They then drove out of the compound and began driving brazenly down First Avenue, shooting at buildings and passersby.injured-001.jpg
Imagine, the bandits just collect a police vehicle and driving through the streets and shooting, one resident said.
Meanwhile, some of the other gunmen barged into the CB&R Mining Enterprise, located on First Avenue, where 72-year-old security guard Ervin Perreira was on duty.
According to reports, Perreira was placed in a freezer and shot dead. The owner of the company, C. Baboolall, confirmed that the gunmen also carted off a safe containing a large quantity of gold. One police rank said that he was just about to go to the station when he heard heavy gunfire.
Shortly afterwards, he saw a police vehicle heading towards him. He assumed that the men were police ranks and was about to go to the vehicle when some residents shouted that the gunmen were in the vehicle.
He immediately hid until the gunfire had subsided.
Eventually, an eyewitness said that he saw the police vehicle head towards the stelling. Several men then jumped out of the vehicle, leaving the engine running.
They then entered a boat.
The resident said that he picked up an injured civilian and drove the vehicle to the Bartica Hospital.
Many of the residents said that they huddled in their homes during the approximately one-hour siege. One woman recalled eventually venturing out of her house and seeing several bodies strewn on the ground.
There were just bodies (everywhere). I saw five bodies at the stelling, a policeman dead by the gate, and a taxi driver dead in his car.
At around 02:00 hrs, five of the injured were brought by plane to the Ogle Aerodrome, before being admitted to the Georgetown Hospital.
The Joint Services has since launched an air, sea and land operation in response to the attack at Bartica.
A high level team of government officials was preparing to leave Georgetown early this morning for the community.

Arsenal hard to beat

February 13, 2008
Started By ZJSnyper24 Comments
The battle for the Barclays Premier League title in England is one of the most intriguing in recent years. Arsenal, the champions in 2004, swept to a five-point lead two days ago following some very favourable results at the weekend. First Chelsea and Liverpool drew 0-0 on Saturday then the following day, defending champions Manchester United were shocked 2-1 by neighbours Manchester City. On Monday, Arsenal rubbed salt into the wounds of their nearest rivals by blanking Blackburn Rovers 2-0 top open up what might prove to be a decisive gap. As Sir Alex Ferguson reminded everyone yesterday, however, the league is just in the second week of February and there is still a very long way to go. Arsenal have to visit the two clubs in second and third spots. On March 22 they will travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea. Then two weeks later, on April 5, they will host Liverpool. The following weekend, it's the big one, Manchester United versus Arsenal at Old Trafford. By then it could be all over. If not, then this could be the decider. Outstanding football I cannot see Chelsea, from eight points off the pace in third, getting past both Arsenal and Chelsea. It is now, as far as I am concerned, a two-horse race between leaders Arsenal on 63 points and Manchester United on 58. Chelsea can pip United for second but eight points with just 12 matches to go is just too much of a gap as far as winning the title is concerned. In addition Arsenal are playing too well. Emmanuel Adebayor, Cesc Fabregas, Matthieu Flamini, Alexander Hleb, Eduardo da Silva, backed by defenders, the cool captain William Galls, Kolo Toure and Bacary Sagna have been playing outstanding football for the entire season and it is difficult to see them caving-in this late in the season. Coming into the new year, many expected Arsenal to falter. Two of their top players, Toure, the dependable defender and the versatile Emmanuel Eboue would be away playing in the Africa Cup of Nations. Dutch star Robin Van Persie who had looked so good in early season was out for an extended period with an injury. Instead of faltering, however, Arsenal have looked even stronger, and the five-point lead now has the opposition in disarray. Rebuilding mode Manager Arsene Wenger is being hailed as a genius by Arsenal supporters. When he allowed his leading star and captain, Thierry Henry, to leave for Barcelona last season it was generally felt that Arsenal would remain in a rebuilding mode and would fail to challenge for the title. In fact, many predicted that they would fall out of the top four and be replaced by arch rivals Tottenham. Now while Arsenal are sitting pretty at the top of the league, Tottenham are floundering at eleventh spot with 32 points. Their other main top four rival, Liverpool, are 19 points off the pace in fifth and in a battle with Everton for fourth place. Arsenal owe their good position to the great depth in the young talent assembled by Wenger. Eduardo is one of the best in front of goal in the entire league and others like Abou Diaby in midfield and young Danish forward Nicklas Bendtner have all been excellent back-up men. My Arsenal player of the season so far is Hleb. The Belarus star is, for me, the leading attacking midfielder in the Barclays Premier League. He has provided an enormous amount of assists for the Arsenal forwards, and is the main man behind Adebayor's 19-goal tally. Whenever he is off the field the Arsenal team struggles to break down defences. Unlike others, I do not think the championships will go down to the wire. With the level of confidence sky high Arsenal could be celebrating their first title in four years by early April.

Woman Raped at Miami Beach Club

A woman at the nightclub Crobar ( Miami Beach ) on Saturday night was taken by 5 men, who according to hospital and police reports, gang raped her before dumping her.

Unable to remember the events of the evening, tests later confirmed the repeat rapes along with traces of Rohypnol in her *la*hd, with Progesterex, which is essentially a small sterilization pill. The drug now being used by
rapists at parties to rape and sterilize their victims.

Progesterex is available to vets to sterilize large animals. Rumor has it that Progesterex is being used together with Rohypnol, the date rape drug. As with Rohypnol, all they have to do is drop it into the girls drink. The girl can't remember a thing the next morning, of all that had taken place the night before.

Progesterex, which dissolves in drinks just as easily, is such that the victim doesn't conceive from the rape and the rapist needn't worry
about having a paternity test identifying him months later. The drugs
effects are not temporary - They are permanent!!!! Progesterex was designed to sterilize horses. Any female who takes it will never be able to conceive a child.

The perpetrators can get this drug from anyone who is in vet school or any university. It's that easy, and progesterex is about to break out big everywhere. Believe it or not, there are even sites on the Internet telling people how to use it.

Please FORWARD this to everyone you know, especially girls.

Be careful when you're out, and don't leave your drink unattended. Please make the effort to pass this onto all you know. Guys, please inform all your female friends and relatives.

This has now been reported to have been used on 360 women around London .. Girls, keep your drinks safe at all times, and men, look after the girls you're with. Please pass this on... Thank you

  1. A 24-year-old man of Kensington in St. James, who tried to leave Jamaica using fraudulent documents, was remanded in custody in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate on Tuesday. Jermaine Burke, who pleaded guilty to two counts of uttering forged documents, a British passport and a Jamaican immigration card, was remanded as the court awaits a copy of his police record. Defence attorney Adrian Dayes told the court that his client's father, wife and two infant children live in England but were not able to file for him. He said that his client's decision to use the forged documents was not because of any previous convictions. However, RM Henry opted to adjourn the matter until February 25, until this was confirmed. The facts are that he checked in at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay on February 14 to board a Martin Air flight destined for Amsterdam. He presented a British passport and a Jamaican Immigration pass in the name 'Donald James Hyde' to the immigration officer on duty. The British High Commission was contacted after the officer inspected the passport and suspected that the photograph was substituted. It was subsequently revealed that the passport, which was issued to a Caucasian male, was stolen. It was also discovered that the stamps on the immigration card were fraudulent.
Today, the mediazoneja.com news room received several phone calls from industry players enquiring whether it was true that Beres Hammond had suffered a heart attack. We checked and thankfully, it was just a rumour.

Beres_Hammond.jpg"It is not true, my father is O.K.," Nads, Beres Hammond's daughter told a mediazoneja.com reporter a few minutes ago. I have been getting several phone calls asking the same thing, he did not suffer a heart attack, it is not true."

The internationally-renowned singer Beres Hammond is known for the hits, Putting Up Resistance, What One Dance Can Do and arguably his biggest hit, Tempted to Touch recorded for Donovan Germaine in 1990.
FIREMEN yesterday demanded a change in the rules on helping obese people after ten of them were called out to move a 41-stone man just two feet across his bed.

Crews had to answer FOUR calls in one week to the home of Robert Marsden though one was cancelled.

Gordon McQuade, of the Fire Brigades Union, said: If you want us to do that type of work we need training and equipment.

The union has called a meeting next Tuesday to discuss a new approach to dealing with similar problems.

Mr McQuade added: If a doctor or other medical personnel think firefighters should help, that is fair enough. But this was not the case.

Weve got no specialist equipment it was sheer brute force. This is not a proper use of resources.

Mr Marsden, of Grangemouth, Stirlingshire, thanked the firemen for their help and said he did not know what the fuss was about.

He added: They came here and got on with their job and once they were finished they went on to their next job.

MediaZoneJA.com understands that up coming dancehall artiste out of Washington DC, Rraw Dawg was shot dead on his way home from a party in DC last Friday.

Rraw_Dawg.jpgThe artiste was said to be close to Bounty Killer and the rest of the Alliance. Efforts to contact members of the Alliance proved futile but according to an email from MediaZoneJA.com visitor, Miss Marcy, Rraw Dawgs brother was shot and killed last weekend outside a Bounty Killer show in DC, they say the whole parking lot turned into a shooting range.

Miss Marcy went on to say, I saw Bounty Killer in Queens last night at Twin Thimb b-day bash and when the selector played "Fallen Soldiers" by DeMarco and bigged up Rraw Dawg, you could tell Killer felt that sh#t.

According to his MySpace profile (www.myspace.com/rrawdawg), Rraw Dawg migrated to New York by way of Kingston Jamaica at an early age. He was schooled in New York City Public School System. He first started toying with the idea of being a DJ by playing around with several classmates in High School being the lunchroom entertainment. He always had a love for the music but was not sure if he was cut out to be a DJ. It took the encouragement of family members who pushed Rraw to explore his talent.

He worked with the likes of producers John John, Baby G and Jam 2. He voiced on many riddims alongside some of the hottest names in dancehall and had also proved his talent on stage alongside DJ's like Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel and many more. He possessed a stage show presence that required attention.

MediaZoneJA.com sends condolences to the family and friends of Rraw Dawg.

The traffic policeman who fled from his colleagues on Monday during a sting operation and later surrendered on Wednesday, has been charged.

The accused Sergeant Patrick Williams, who is assigned to the Police Traffic Headquarters, was charged Friday.

He is expected to be brought before the Court on Monday to answer charges of breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act.

Sergeant Williams also faces a charge of assault at common-law after investigators reported that he pointed his service weapon at detectives during the sting operation.

Allegations are that on Monday officers assigned to the Anti-Corruption Branch observed Sergeant Williams taking money from a taxi operator.

Sergeant Williams had earlier stopped the taxi operator on Hagley Park Road and warned him for prosecution for breaches of the Road Traffic Act.

It is alleged that Sergeant Williams demanded $20,000 to drop the charges.

The taxi driver contacted the police and a sting operation was set up outside the Central Police Station.

Sergeant Williams allegedly collected the money after which the police moved in to arrest him.

The policeman managed to elude his colleagues.

He threw down his service pistol and made good his escape.

Sergeant Williams surrendered to the police on Wednesday accompanied by his lawyer.

2 Christians 9 abortions
Both women say they were molested

Lizette was a good Christian girl. So too was Kerine. They both grew up in Christian homes and were very active in their local churches. They sang on the choir, went religiously to prayer meetings, Bible study and fasted.

But Lizette was living a double life, one which led her to have seven abortions - one involving twins - between ages 20 and 26.

And Kerine, who was "in and out" of church in her teen years, aborted two pregnancies, the first when she was 13, the other six years later at 18.

The two women have never met. In fact, the former is a Kingstonian, while the other hails from Montego Bay. The only thing they have in common is the set of circumstances which surrounded their having had induced abortions.

They both said they were molested when they were very young girls, that they were involved with men much older than they were, and both grew up in poor families in inner-city communities. They both also said they experienced rejection, condemnation, depression and emotional instability as a result of their actions.

"I made the choice to cover my own family and the church," Lizette told the Sunday Observer. "I thought, 'what would people think?' Living in the inner-city, they look up to us and my mother, she was a woman who did not like scandals and that kind of thing. Furthermore, when I looked at my own life and the struggles, because even though I was with this man, I was not getting the help. My needs were not being met, and so I decided to do the abortion."

On the first occasion, she was six weeks pregnant. She left work early one Friday, checked into a well-known private hospital and paid $4,000 for the procedure.

"I can recall the pain because there were no anaesthetics back then," she said. "I remember the sounds that I made, just 'mmmm'. It was so hurtful and painful. I can never forget the forceps, when it goes in and it makes that sound [imitates cracking sound] and then you feel that stabbing. I bore the pain and I went alone because I didn't want anyone to know. All I could say was 'mmmmm' and the tears flowed, but I bit my tongue and I bore it... I even felt when he was doing the washing out [imitates gushing sound].

"When I was finished, he gave me the prescription for Baralgin 500 and Brufen. I was hunched over when I dragged myself out. I was just dazed. I remember saying to the secretary, 'I need to lie down' and I lay on the chairs and fell asleep. I woke up after two hours," she said.

On Sunday, she was back in church but it was difficult.

"There was a deep emptiness, a pain, rejection, because everything turns in. You feel like a nobody. Behind my smile I was hurting so much. The pretence... I know about pretence. I was in condemnation. I wore a mask because there I was in the midst of all these people who were supposed to be righteous and I was the sinner," said Lizette.

She was 20 and in her first relationship. Her partner, 15 years her senior, was not a Christian, and unknown to her, was only separated from his wife. For the entire time they were involved, some four years, they used the withdrawal method of contraception.

"In my early life I always used to say I would never have a child out of wedlock and that statement allowed me and lured me into it, which is out of ignorance and also deceit of my own heart, and so I made my choice," said Lizette.

Two years later, she had a second abortion, this time without her partner's knowledge. This time she went to a private doctor and it cost $8,000.

At age 24, and with a new partner, who was also much older and who she later found out was married, she aborted another pregnancy. In the years they were together, she had two more, the second of which was a male/female twin.

"This guy was more affluent and influential but he never helped. And, of course, I was just dying for help," explained Lizette. "This was a poor girl. I needed help. When a woman gives her body she's expecting something... And I was still in the church. I went to church late, trying to hide at the back."

Relationship number three lasted just over a year, and within that time, Lizette had two more abortions. Total number of procedures: seven. Total number of children lost: eight.
She turned her life around in her 28th year, the same year her mother died.

"God started speaking to me more clearly," she said. "He showed me the stench of my life. I questioned His love for me. 'Why do you allow me to go to this extreme, why didn't you stop me when I did one, two, three? You allowed me to do eight [babies], why?' and He said, 'for you to understand the depth of love that I have for you, the price that I paid for you'."

Until the turnaround, Lizette, who is a qualified and trained professional, and a very physically active person, sought refuge in her workouts, but it was the hymn Jesus, He heals you where you are that provided the therapy, she said. Now, she wants to share her story so she can save lives.

"Even in the church we think 'yes, Christ forgives us' and when we find out about people who have committed such, we reject them, we keep them at a distance and there are lesbians, homosexuals, bisexuals in the church but some are fearful to even say where they have been," she said, adding that she knew girls just like herself in her own church.

"It could sound as if there is no remorse but I'm not here to jar emotions. I just want people to understand that what Jesus has done for me, He can do for anyone else. For the killer, the rapist... it's not where you began, it's where you're going."

"I must have been a mad woman to have eight abortions. I was sick!"

Kerine's story

Twenty-nine year-old Kerine, also believes she was unwell to have had two abortions.

"What I know now, if I had known it then, I wouldn't have had the abortions," she said.

"Even though you were only 13?" the Sunday Observer asked.

The reply: "Yes. It is wrong."

The man for whom she got pregnant then was "old enough to be my father". Kerine said she doesn't remember everything about that first abortion, but she does recall when her mother took her to the doctor and had the procedure done.

"She said it would destroy my life and that it wouldn't make sense... I remember the rejection, the sleepless nights, the depression, the peer pressure. I fell back in school and then my mother stopped spending on me because she said she didn't see what it was worth," said Kerine.

"Because of that, I never accomplished what I wanted to accomplish. My father sent me to school, but my mother never showed any interest, and I left school at grade 10," the young woman said.

Three years later, at age 16, she got pregnant again. The situation was so difficult, she said, that she didn't just want to kill the foetus, but herself as well.

"One night I was passing a crusade and the pastor was doing altar call. He said he knew someone was there who was pregnant and who wanted to commit suicide. I just stood there staring because I knew it was me," said Kerine.

She overcame the suicidal tendencies through counselling and decided to bring the pregnancy to term. The flipside, however, was that her father threw her out of the house. She moved in with the family of the man for whom she was pregnant and today, she has a 12-year-old daughter.

The year of the first pregnancy, however, Kerine again found herself with child, but things didn't go as planned.

"He said he wasn't ready for another child and that if I was going to keep it I would have to leave his house, but I didn't have anywhere else to go so I had the abortion," she told the Sunday Observer.

"That one hurt me big time because I had all these plans and then the relationship broke up. I threw away the baby because I thought we would have been together, but then it didn't work," she confided.

"I went through a healing process with a lot of counselling. If I hadn't got that counselling, maybe you wouldn't know me today," she said.

Now, she said, she has "totally dedicated" her life to God and wants to publish a book with her story. She has, however, already told her daughter.

"I shared it with her because we're close and she said she knew. I don't know how, but she felt there was a missing link," said Kerine. "It used to affect her emotionally and socially. She used to be withdrawn."

Social scientist Frederick Nunes has done abortion research work in Barbados and Guyana. Using the abortion rates in those countries as a base (79.5 and 41.9 per cent respectively), coupled with the number of live births in Jamaica for 2005 and the size of the female population between the ages of 15 and 44, as per figures for 2006 provided by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica, he estimates that the country's abortion rate (number of abortions per 1,000 women age 15-44 per year) lies between a low of 31,251 and a high of 51,875. Jamaica's abortion ratio then (number of abortions divided by the number of pregnancies x 100) is between 40.56 and 53.11.

Elective abortion is illegal in Jamaica, but a report of the Abortion Policy Review Group recommended last month that the procedure be made legal and that the Government provide trained professionals and registered health care facilities to safely carry out abortions.

A DESPERATE hubby woke his wife up from a coma by giving her a rollicking for being ill.

Dom Sullivan, 37, blew his top when doctors told him to think about switching off Yvonnes life support.

He said: I got angry. I grabbed her hand and shouted, Start fighting. Dont you dare give up. I gave her a *la*hdy good rollicking.

Just two hours later mum Yvonne started breathing again and came round in a few days.

She had gone into septic shock after giving birth to son Clinton, who tragically later died.

Lorry driver Dom had kept a two-week vigil at the 28-year-olds bedside.

RECENT MIRACLE IN EGYPT

A Muslim man in Egypt killed his wife because she was reading the Bible and then buried her with their infant baby and an 8-year old daughter.
The girls were buried alive! He then reported to the police that an uncle killed the kids. 15 days later, another family member died. When they went to bury him, they found the 2 little girls under the sand - ALIVE!
The country is outraged over the incident, and the man will be executed.
The older girl was asked how she had survived and she says:- "A man wearing shiny white clothes, with bleeding wounds in his hands, came every day to feed us. He woke up my mom so she could nurse my sister," she said. She was interviewed on Egyptian national TV, by availed Muslim woman news anchor. She said on public TV, "This was none other than Jesus, because nobody else does things like this!"
Muslims believe Isa (Jesus) would do this, but the wounds mean He really was crucified, and it's clear also that He is alive! But, it's also clear that the child could not make up a story like this, and there is no way these children could have survived without a true miracle. Muslim leaders are going to have a hard time to figure out what to do with this, and the
popularity of the Passion movie doesn't help! With Egypt at the center of the media and education in the Middle East , you can be sure this story will spread.
Christ is still turning the world upside down! Please let this story be shared. The Lord says, "I will bless the person who puts his trust in me.

AFTER MORE than two hours of interrogation by Fraud Squad detectives yesterday, Kern Spencer, the former junior minister in the previous People's National Party (PNP) administration, emerged with a half pack of Oreo cookies in his hand and a peach-flavoured Tampico soda. He haltingly told journalists that he does not fear prosecution.Spencer, who is at the centre of a criminal investigation, responded "no" yesterday when asked whether he was concerned about the possibility of prosecution. The 33-year-old Spencer applied for leave of absence as member of parliament (MP) for North East St Elizabeth last week, amid mounting pressure for him to step aside. He has been implicated in a criminal probe to determine how contracts were issued in the distribution of free Cuba light bulbs. The project, which chalked up a $276-million bill, ran for 18 months and ended just before the September 3 general election last year.

Uttered only a few words

Yesterday Spencer, who had wept openly in Parliament when revelations of possible fraud were made by Energy Minister Clive Mullings in November, seemed uncomfortable as camera lenses and tape recorders moved in on him.The former senator, People's National Party Youth Organisation president and University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, guild president, who has never failed to speak his mind, uttered only a few words as he left the Organised Crime Investigation Division (OCID) of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). He had just beenquizzed by a team of senior detectives about his role in the light bulb project. The energy-saving project, which involved the replacement of the less efficient incandescent bulb with more than four million energy- saving ones from Cuba, cost more than $276 million to implement. Spencer was the state minister in the energy ministry led by Phillip Paulwell. He was given full responsibility for the project.Soon after the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) won the September 3 elections, new Energy Minister Clive Mullings said there were serious questions about the implementation of the project. In a subsequent investigation, Contractor General Greg Christie said Spencer flouted the law by hand-picking the contractors - his friend Rodney Chin and the grandmother of his child, Verdie Mair. One of his children's mothers, Sherine Shakes, was also involved in the project as chief principal for Universal Management and Development Company Chin's company which distributed the bulbs.

Totally surprised

Yesterday, journalists camped outside the OCID head office on Orange Street, downtown Kingston, where Spencer was being questioned by a team led by Superintendent of Police Fitz Bailey. The embattled politician, though, looked totally surprised when he and his attorney, Deborah Martin, attempted to exit the building and found journalists waiting. In a flash, Spencer retreated from the door. He apparently devised a plan with Martin who later left the building for her SUV.Martin circled the block and returned in seven minutes. The idea was to get Spencer into the vehicle without journalists getting to him. That failed. As soon as Spencer made his way towards the vehicle, he was hounded and could not avoid responding to a few questions."I am not commenting," he said when asked how he felt about the interview.Spencer, however, said that he "cooperated with them (police) fully". He also said that he "just came to a routine interview".When asked, Bailey, the inves-tigating officer, would only say the police and Spencer had come to a "mutual agreement to continue (the interview) at a later date". Karl Angell, meanwhile, the director of communications at the JCF, said that reports of a stop order against Spencer were false.Spencer's party has said they consider the allegations against him "very serious". Yesterday, PNP General Secretary Peter Bunting said there was not much the party could say now that an investigation was under way. He, however, added that "the chips must fall where they may".

USB 3.0?

Intel has decided on rounding-up a few companies and getting together a new standard that would better serve the needs of future computer users. The recently-formed USB 3.0 Promoter Group includes Intel, HP, Microsoft, Texas Instruments, NEC and NXP Semiconductors and it set on bringing a USB standard that would be more than 10 times faster than USB 2.0 (480Mb/s) and more energy efficient.

The USB 3.0 standard would be compatible with 2.0 ports and will become the logical choice when transferring large files. The development of the USB 3.0 standard is in full swing and we should see the final specs in the first half of 2008.

John McCain's march to the Republican presidential nomination was sidetracked yesterday as he denied a romantic relationship with a female lobbyist and rejected a newspaper report that he improperly favoured her client's claims that hit hard at a man who has built much of his career on his integrity.

In the Democratic race, Barack Obama earned his 11th straight victory, winning the Democrats Abroad global primary in results announced yesterday. The victory, while not significant in terms of delegates, deals another blow to Hillary Rodham Clinton as her struggling campaign grasps for new momentum going into must-win races in Texas and Ohio on March 4.

The report in The New York Times comes as McCain is close to wrapping up the nomination and is making strides towards gaining the support of conservatives wary of his candidacy. The Times report is unlikely to derail his nomination, but it is an unwelcome distraction.  clapclapclap
