A star is about to be reborn. Following reports that Will Smith was rebooting the 1982 musical film Annie starring his daughter Willow and featuring music from Jay-Z, the remake is official, with the announcement that Smiths Overbrook Entertainment is partnering with Jay-Z to develop and produce major motion pictures, beginning with Annie.

Overbrook, run by Will, his wife Jada Pinkett, and partners James Lassiter and Ken Stovitz, first teamed with Hov to co-invest in beauty products line Carols Daughter, later partnering to produce the Broadway musical Fela!

The Overbrook Entertainment family and I have a unified vision. Weve already produced a Tony Award-winning play and were developing a true superstar in Willow, said Jay-Z in a statement. This venture into film development and production is a perfect next step with teams that are accomplished, creative, and innovative.

Its currently unclear if the Roc Nation chief will handle musical duties for Annies soundtrack, but 10-year-old Willow will star in the remake, with Sony Pictures Entertainment developing the flick.

The singing sensation, riding on the success of her platinum single Whip My Hair, is prepping its follow-up 21st Century Girl, with her debut album slated for spring.

Coroner Faith Marshall-Harris is concerned about the number of young men killing themselves mainly because of involvement in drug-related activities.

She explained that the young men did not necessarily commit suicide because of drug taking but the pressures from, in some cases, being hounded by drug pushers for payment or being caught up in smuggling or trafficking.

The coroner heard 51 inquests last year, nine of which were suicides and six were young men, who took their lives between 2004 and 2008. In the case of the six suicides investigated by the court in 2009, five were young men ranging in ages from 18 to 28 years, with one 40 years old.

Marshall-Harris said that increasingly over the last few years there was the drug-related element attached to the suicides in the youths. Prior to that the suicides, she revealed, had been linked mainly to failed relationships, financial problems and latterly HIV diagnosis.

There is a drug element in the more recent ones. They [young men] were not able to get out of the drug spiral and just ended it all, Marshall-Harris stated.

Since taking up the appointment in 2001, Marshall-Harris has completed 607 inquests into unusual deaths and apart from the suicides the other cases include accidents, drownings, fatal ingestions, hangings and other freak incidents.

Ive noticed the last few years the suicides were not about the drug taking but that they felt hounded by the pressures of activities which involved drugs; not the actual drug use but areas such as trafficking, importation or the sale of drug. The pressure also from drug lords can lead them to that type of escape. They get too deeply involved in the trade, the coroner stated.

In 2008 nine cases of suicides were adjudicated and five of them were men ranging in age from 24 to 39.

The drug scourge reared its head in other deaths, Marshall-Harris stated, particularly drownings where deceased was attempting to smuggle in drugs.

In 2003, just over a year after she was appointed coroner, Marshall-Harris heard 32 cases of suicides, many going back to the 1990s. Of that number 22 were young men, but the reasons were different.

Marshall-Harris said that in many cases relatives paid little attention to the warning signs and she appealed to Barbadians to be on the lookout for signs of depression in relatives or friends.

A Brazilian man has been arrested on suspicion of keeping his wife locked in a cellar for at least eight years while he lived upstairs with another woman.

Acting on a tip, police found 64-year-old Sebastiana Aparecida Groppo lying naked in a filthy basement in the city of Sorocaba in Sao Paulo state.

Her husband Joao Batista Groppo told officers he had locked her up because she was mentally ill and aggressive.

Police said Mrs Groppo appeared to be in good physical health.

But they said she showed signs of mental problems that could have been caused by her confinement.'Unfit for animals.'Police inspector Jaqueline Barcelos Coutinho told the Associated Press news agency she was shocked when she arrived at Mr Groppo's house and found Mrs Groppo behind a padlocked iron gate in the cellar.

 

"She was lying nude on a concrete bed inside a foul-smelling, humid cubicle with no electricity or ventilation," Ms Coutinho said.

"She was in a degrading situation unfit for animals".

Mr Groppo, 64, initially said he had kept his wife confined for 16 years but then revised the time to eight, Ms Coutinho said.

"He told us that locking her up was the only way he could think of to prevent her from wandering off and getting lost," she added.

The couple have been married for more than 40 years.

Mrs Groppo was treated in hospital and then taken to the house of her son in a nearby city.

Mr Groppo and the other woman he lives with are facing charges of false imprisonment

PORT ANTONIO, Portland Everton McDonald, the owner of Shine supermarket and wholesale in Port Antonio allegedly ordered that an employee's finger be partly cut off as punishment for stealing two bars of soap.

McDonald and his employee Calvin 'Jegge' James, will appear in the Port Antonio Resident Magistrate's Court on March 3 to answer to a charge of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.

Both were granted bail of $100,000 and $150,000 respectively.

The complainant, Michael Wilson, recounted his ordeal to the Observer.

"I was upstairs cleaning up because we responsible for the storeroom. While cleaning up I found two detergent soaps on the floor. It came into my mind and a don't know why because it is wrong; so I put them in my waist and coming down I reach one of the security looking at me. I was going to turn back and me see say him see me already so me nuh badda," he said.

"I turned to him and say "Sir me have two soap and me know me blunder still and me a go put them back". Him say him can't make me go back cause another security was watching him so him carry mi up stairs to the boss. On reaching upstairs the boss say 'A whe you catch him a do?' Him seh him thief two soap' The boss seh 'Well you know wha a gawn ya now, me check me stock and me lose $9 million short so hear wha a go gwan ya now, me want a finger," Wilson said.

"Me say Oh God me boss please yu don't have any other option? Him seh no cause me stock short. Him ask fi 'Jegge' and Jegge seh me a go want a finger? Dem carry me down a di kitchen and say me a go want a hammer and dem go for the hammer and come back and say 'put out the hand'. Me hesitate for about two times and den put out the hand and dem chop off a it one time and me draw it away, dem two time me put it out again and dem chop off a it again two time and me pull in the hand again. Then them say, 'A wha you a do boy?" he went on.

"The one Jegge had a knife and put it towards me side so me stretch out the hand and turn away me head and me feel a burning sensation and when me look round me see me piece a finger on the table so me tek me handkerchief and wrap me hand so," he said.

"Beachie say this is an example when everybody else see it them will stop cause mi lose a lot of stock. Him she me must go back to work and me tell him say me have fi go to the hospital. So me leave and go up at the hospital and get it dressed," Wilson said.

The incident occurred on Tuesday January 18 and the men were locked up over the weekend and were bailed on Monday.

The message seems to be in response to the recent Facebook-Goldman deal, which could bring in up to 750 new investors all grouped together as one fund through Goldman, and ultimately, bring about a soon-to-be publicly traded Facebook. The recent mysterious status was deleted soon after it was discovered, but not before it garnered more than 1,800 likes and nearly 500 comments (says Tech Crunch).

Samantha, where are you? Your soldier boyfriend, evidently deployed in Afghanistan, wants to marry you. He's proposed, Samantha. But we know you didn't get his phone message, because Diane Potts, a 44-year-old mother of three did. And she's certain she doesn't have a beau in Afghanistan who wants to marry her.

According to British media reports, Potts came home last Thursday in the northen English city of Gateshead, checked her answering machine and heard this:

"I love you so much, I love you with all my heart and I was going to ask you, dont answer, obviously you cant answer, but will you marry me?"

"I could tell he was speaking from a phone booth, the line was quite crackly. I was shocked, and had to listen to it again before the message sunk in," Potts told the Daily Mail. "I think he probably dialed incorrectly, and that his girlfriends number is similar to mine."

Unless Samantha or the soldier come forth after reports of the call were splashed across the British press Wednesday, it could be awhile before the soldier can make his pitch again.

"He said he would not be able to ring for another month, and would not be home for another three months," Potts told the Daily Mail.

In the 90-second message, the soldier also talks about losing a comrade in recent fighting.

"One of my guys has just been blown up, so I feel sad, I really feel sad," he says on the tape.

Samantha is also apparently pregnant.

"I cant wait until you give birth to my baby, my little soldier," the soldier says. "I will do everything in my heart and I will try my hardest to fight to protect you."

Then he's back to the fight.

"I've got to go back out here now. I love you with all my heart, don't ever forget that, I love you, all right Samantha, I love you, bye, bye," the phone message ends.

Potts says she hopes Samantha and the soldier connect soon, according to reports.

"I e-mailed the media to see if anybody could pick it up and do something about,"she told Sky News Online.

"He had a regional accent, but we're not sure if he lives up here, so it's great to get coverage and find her.

"We just really want to find her."

 

(AFP) LOS ANGELES Financier and cricket mogul Allen Stanford is unfit to stand trial on charges of running a $7-billion fraud and needs treatment for a drug addiction, a US judge ruled.

"The court finds Stanford is incompetent to stand trial at this time based on his apparent impaired ability to rationally assist his attorneys in preparing his defense," US District Judge David Hittner wrote in his ruling in Houston, Texas.

"The court's finding that Stanford is incompetent, however, does not alter the court's finding that Stanford is a flight risk."

Psychiatrists for the government and Stanford's team who testified at a hearing earlier this month concluded that he was suffering from bouts of delirium linked to his dependency on a strong anti-anxiety medication.

They found the 60-year-old was also depressed and incompetent to stand trial due to a brain injury he sustained during a 2009 jailhouse brawl, and recommended he be weaned off the drug.

Hittner denied a request by Stanford's lawyers to release him on bond and place him in a private treatment facility for his addiction.

Instead, he order the inmate to be committed to the custody of the attorney general to "undergo medical treatment for his current impaired mental capacity" and get a psychiatric evaluation.

The judge also recommended that the flamboyant Texan be sent to a medical facility within the US Bureau of Prisons, namely citing the Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina, where Wall Street swindler Bernard Madoff is currently serving a 150-year term for defrauding investors of $20 billion.

The psychiatrists who examined Stanford found he was currently taking at least three medications to treat his depression and anxiety -- clonazepam (Klonopin), mirtazapine (Remeron) and sertraline (Zoloft) -- and that he was taking particularly high doses of clonazepam.

Clonazepam can be addictive when the body develops tolerance to the drug.

Stanford's trial had been due to begin this week but was postponed indefinitely until he can be considered fit to prepare his defense for trial.

The financier has pleaded not guilty to 21 counts of fraud, money laundering and obstruction. He faces up to 375 years in jail if convicted.

Lawyers for Stanford did not immediately return requests for comment.

A crazed Brooklyn mom who tried to forcibly abort her cheating hubby's love child by poisoning his mistress cut a deal with prosecutors Wednesday that could have out of prison in less than two years.

Kisha Jones, 40, was seven months pregnant when she tricked Monique Hunter, 26, into taking an abortion-inducing medication on October 2009.

Jones' hubby, Anthony Jones, had knocked up both his wife and mistress around the same time, said defense lawyer Barry Turner.

"My client was in the last trimester of her pregnancy and was acting irrationally," he said outside court.

"I guess her hormones were out of whack."

Turner said accused Hunter of taunting his client,  leaving phone messages with details of her three-year affair - and claiming Jones' man  would soon leave her.

Jones had no criminal history and a life-long record of helping disabled kids, and deserved a break, Turner said.

She was under mounting pressure expecting her fourth child and "she acted in a manner that wasn't consistent with her personality," the lawyer said.

Jones admitted that, using a forged prescription and phone number-disguising software, she called Hunter and got her to take cytotec, causing her to go into early  labor.

She was also accused of then trying to kill the premature newborn in  the maternity ward and later impersonating a hospital exec to try getting the baby off a ventilator -  but those attempted murder charges were dropped.

Wearing a knitted pink hat, the spurned spouse pleaded Wednesday to a lesser charge of second-degree assault.

Prosecutors signed off on the plea deal "after careful consideration and only after talking to the victim in this case many times," assistant district attorney David Klestzick told the judge.

Jones will be sentenced to four years in the klink on Feb. 10 - but with time served and credit for good behavior, she could be out in a year and eight months.

Turner said that Jones and her husband are still married and that Anthony Jones cares for the children and is involved with his wife's legal defense.

It wasn't clear if he has contact with Hunter or her child.

"Everybody's fine," the lawyer said. "The baby is fine, Monique Hunter is fine."

CLINTON Area residents have officially set their taste buds to a new flavor.

Equipped with his trademark clock, Public Enemy group member and reality TV star Flavor Flav joined citizens, city officials and media for Flavs Fried Chickens grand opening ceremony Monday.

Once the event completed, the restaurant opened at 4 p.m. and people lined up outside the building for hours to taste Flavs fried-chicken recipe. Flav, who has been in Clinton since Thursday, said this experience is overwhelming.

I just want to bring something good to your neighborhood, Flav said to the crowd during the ribbon cutting. I feel that this could be a good entity to the neighborhood.

Plus, Im trying to start a franchise, so this is the beginning of it. And I just want to say that you guys are a part of it.

After meeting with several Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and other city leaders, Flav joined co-owner Nick Cimino and his family to cut the ribbon, starting the inaugural FFC.

Clinton Mayor Rodger Holm said the restaurants opening is good news for the city.

My first thought was to reality TV, Holm said when he first heard that FFC would land in Clinton. But I didnt realize he had a chicken place. Anything positive that happens to the city is for the better, and this gives Clinton a positive image.

Chamber President Julie Allesee shared in Holms excitement, and as a first-time restaurant owner, Flav might have a few more resources than other people who start up businesses, Allesee said.

(Flav) comes in with a better cash flow than others, Allesee said. However, putting a business plan together for the first time is a lot of work. You have to be there and provide good service.

The idea for FFC started with the Cimino family, and Flav made sure to thank the entire crew, especially Nick and his mother, Dominica Cimino, better known as Mama Cimino.

FFC took shape at Mama Ciminos in Last Vegas, after Flav started selling 99-cent wings at the restaurant. Once Nick saw what Flav was doing, he bought a building, 916 N. Second St., which is next door to Clintons Mama Ciminos, and completed most of the renovations.

All of this wouldnt have happened if it wasnt for (Dominica), Flav said . If she didnt bring (Nick) into the world, none of this would have happened. So Mama, your womb was blessed with the best.

Dominica said Flav has become part of the Cimino family.

Hes one of my boys, Dominica said. Hes really friendly with everybody. Hes down to earth and treats people nice. Thats what I like about him.

Flav completed the ceremony by entering the kitchen and showcasing his culinary skills. Flav owns a culinary degree and has past cooking experience.

Once finished with the cooking, Flav grabbed a pair of tongs and handed out his restaurants staple, fried chicken, to the customers, while also throwing out a few jabs to Kentucky Fried Chicken, which is housed next door.

Im not scared to go against the colonel taste wise, Flav said about KFCs notable figurine. Business wise, hes got me, because hes been here longer. But Im about to catch up to the colonel.

Reigning Digicel Rising Star Dalton Harris was robbed at knifepoint on his way to school in Frankfield, Clarendon, yesterday morning.

THE STAR understands that Harris' wallet, which contained $26,000, was taken from him during the robbery by two men armed with knives who ambushed him. The incident occurred about 8:45 a.m.

Information received by THE STAR is that Harris was a passenger on a robot taxi heading to school, when the incident occurred.

THE STAR was told that during the journey Harris was informed by the driver of the taxi that he had to let him off because police officers were on the route and he wanted to avoid them. Harris then exited the taxi which drove off shortly afterwards.

It was at that moment, two men emerged from nearby bushes, pounced upon Harris, held him at knifepoint and robbed him of his wallet.

All efforts by THE STAR to contact Harris proved futile as a relative explained that he had left his cellphone at home but was not there.

Harris had gained stardom after he won the sixth staging of 'Digicel Rising Stars' in September of last year.

The Frankfield police have confirmed the incident. Detective Woman Constable V May is leading the investigations.

Everyone loves something they can't have, even if it's a wriggling fish in the mouth.

At least that's true for the Dogon people of Mali, who restrict fishing in the sacred Lake Antogo to once a year. On the appointed day, fishermen line up to rush the lake with baskets, clearing the entire lake in moments.

A fast food worker was viciously attacked by a group of teenage girls who were fighting and throwing food inside a Wendy's restaurant in Queens Village.

When the worker tried to break it up, she was pounced on and it was all captured on video.

Michelle Ortiz says she did what she had to do, and tried to break-up the food fight.

Michelle was saved by a co-worker, but suffered a concussion.

The videotape, shot by someone in the crowd and posted on YouTube is being studied by NYPD detectives in an attempt to identify the attackers.

"This vicious attack on our female employee," said a franchise spokesman, "was shocking and uncalled for. We are cooperating with the police in their investigation."

Witnesses told police the attackers were students at nearby Martin Van Buren High School.

Michelle is separated, and depends on her job to raise her five children.

No arrests have been made at this time.

The police are reporting that the murder of the two women on March Pen Road in Spanish Town, St Catherine, yesterday, was connected to the ongoing feud within the Clansman gang which has so far left at least eight persons dead.

The dead women have been identified as Erica Simmonds, 44, and 23-year-old Peta-Gaye Bunda both of March Pen Road. A third woman was also shot and injured. So far at least eight persons have been killed as a result of the ongoing feud.

Reports are that about 11 a.m., both women were sitting in an area along March Pen Road known as 'Africa' when explosions were heard. THE STAR was told that the three were hit by a hail of bullets. Simmonds and Bunda died on the spot, while the other woman was taken to the hospital.

Yesterday, investigators told THE STAR that said the murders of the two women is connected to that of Jermaine Morrison.

"Yes Bunda was his girlfriend and Simmonds was the girl's mother. The police have information that there is an internal feud over turf, these two ladies were targeted as a result, " a senior investigator said.

Morrison was shot and killed about 1:30 p.m. along Burke Road, Spanish Town, yesterday. Last Thursday, five persons were shot and killed in Portsmouth, Portmore, also in St. Catherine.

Residents told THE STAR that it was strange that a curfew had been imposed on the community and thugs were still able to invade the community and commit such a heinous act.

" If the man dem so serious dat police roun deh so and dem kill people yah so, it really sad." A female bystander said.

They said they hoped Spanish Town did not return to times past when at least one person died every day from gun related incidents.

A new scam that appeals to both our egos and instinct for voyeurism is spreading like wildfire on Facebook.

An app going by various names, including ProfileSpy and Pro Check, claims it will offer insight into how many people have viewed your Facebook profile if you fill out a short survey and grant the app permission to access your information.

The scam has been making its way around the social network via status updates, which include a link to the suspicious service and text that reads, "My total facebook views are: 1245 Find out your total profile views."

Grim news from Uganda. Some of you may remember a few months ago I wrote about an appalling story in that country, in which a newspaper called Rolling Stone (unrelated, of course, to the music mag) did a name and shame of Ugandas top 100 homos, disgustingly reminiscent of a British newspapers similar piece about sex offenders in 2001.

Hang them, the front page said.

Now, of course, David Kato, an outspoken Ugandan gay rights activist, has been found beaten to death in his home. He had been attacked with a hammer. The inevitability is sickening.

Police are saying that it was a robbery gone wrong, not a hate crime, but understandably, given that homophobia is state-sponsored in the country other activists are profoundly unconvinced.

Last time I wrote on this, I placed some of the blame on US evangelicals who had gone to Uganda and co-authored a bill by the government making homosexuality a criminal act, although one of them -  Reverend Scott Lively did say they had gone too far by making it punishable by death. I slightly regretted that, as it removes culpability from the Ugandans themselves homophobia is endemic in much of Africa, among Muslims, Christians and others, and the continent must take responsibility for its dreadful record in that area.

The remake of the tune "Benz Punnany" by vybz kartel seem to go down well with the man who made the original version, Joseph Green aka Grindsman. In a recent post Grindsman expressed his appreciation for the recognition due to the remake of his 1990's track Benz Punany by Vybz Kartel. He indicated at the time when he did the song, it was about the love of the music and not necessarily relying on it for a comfortable living, though they did get paid for stage shows and such (not that much of that has really changed). According to Grindsman, he signed to the performing rights in London, thus he should be getting publishing royalties, he also appreciates the fact that his name is being called again in the modern dancehall era, making the younger generation be familiar with who Grindsman is. Grindsman is looking forward to take it further indicating that Kartel should also do a remake of the song "de clock".

The shooting deaths of six men in two separate incidents are believed to be the result of an internal conflict as gangsters wrestle for control of the notorious St Catherine-based Clansman gang, police sources have told THE STAR.

Yesterday, Jermaine Morrison, also called 'Speedy', a reputed senior member of the gang, was murdered at approximately 1:30 p.m. by a lone gunman who reportedly shot him several times at the intersection of Burke and March Pen roads, Spanish Town, St Catherine.

Another man and a woman were also reportedly injured in the gun attack.

A high ranking officer from the St Catherine South police told THE STAR that Morrison is believed to be one of a group of men who snuffed out the lives of five men last Thursday as they played a game of dominoes in Portsmouth, Portmore, also in the parish.

Those killed in that incident were identified as 56-year-old Lerrimore Warmington; 39-year-old Owen Henry; Kenton Headley, 30; 45-year-old Levil Anderson, and a man identified only as 'Pazzam' who investigators say was also a Clansman gang member, and who was the intended target of the hit.

The police are theorising that Morrison's murder was a reprisal for the death of Pazzam.

"Based on intelligence we have gathered that there is a struggle for power within the gang. Thursday's attack in Portsmouth, and this latest murder was sparked by that struggle," the officer told THE STAR.

After the murders in Portsmouth, the police identified a 'Don Topping' as a suspect in connection with the incident. He is also another reputed member of the Clansman gang.

The suspect, whose real name is Donovan Topping, surrendered to the police on the weekend and is to be questioned this week.

Following Morrison's murder, investigators from the St Catherine North Division listed two other persons they claim are Clansman members; Nevardo Hodges, otherwise called 'Dee Jay', and Rowell Jennings, otherwise called 'Jay Jay', as persons of interest.

These men are considered armed and dangerous and should be approached with great caution, the police say.

Both Hodges and Jennings frequent Hopeful Village, Lakes Pen and Quarry Hill in Spanish Town.

They are being urged to report to police personnel at the Spanish Town Police Station by 2 p.m. today.

Persons knowing the whereabouts of Hodges and Jennings can share their information with the police by calling Operation Kingfish at 811, Police Control at 119 and Crime Stop at 311.

Graca Machel visited Milpark hospital in Johannesburg on Thursday where her husband, former president Nelson Mandela, was being treated. Machel arrived at 3pm, almost 24 hours after official word was last received on Mandela's condition. Mandela, 92, was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday for what the Nelson Mandela Foundation called "routine tests".

Media flocked to the hospital on Wednesday and many kept an overnight vigil. Scores of journalists continued to gather amid tight security on Thursday.

Anti-apartheid activist Albertina Sisulu earlier entered the hospital in a wheelchair and was later seen driving out. She smiled and waved at photographers.

Justice Minister Jeff Radebe, Mandela's personal assistant Zelda la Grange, and the daughter of Mandela's wife Graca Machel arrived earlier. Senior military officials were also seen entering hospital grounds.

Nelson Mandela has been taken to hospital amid growing concerns over his health, according to media reports.

The media gathered outside the Milpark hospital in Johannesburg on Wednesday night to wait for news about the 92-year-old anti-apartheid icon and former South African president.

However, a statement released by Mandela's foundation said he was undergoing routine tests.

Mandela was in no danger and is in good spirits, Sello Hatang, spokesman for the Nelson Mandela Foundation said in a statement.

Mandela, the first black president of South Africa and one of the world's most revered statesmen, lives in Johannesburg.

He spent 27 years in prison after being arrested for plotting an armed struggle against the apartheid government. His release in 1990 paved the way for the end of white rule and he became president in 1994. He stepped down after one term in power in 1999.

South Africas President Jacob Zuma wont be returning from the World Economic Forum in Davos, SAPA reported, citing Zizi Kodwa, his spokesman.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner was last seen in public at the football World Cup Final in July last year, when he was briefly driven around the pitch on the back of a golf buggy.

Close family members, including his wife Graca Machel, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, visited him during the course of Wednesday afternoon, prompting speculation that his condition was worse than initially reported.

According to The Australian newspaper, Archbishop Desmond Tutu sparked intense debate earlier Wednesday about Mandela's health after he replied to questions from reporters. "I saw him last week," Archbishop Tutu said in Cape Town. "He was all right I mean, he's 92, man, you know? And he's frail."

Ohio An Ohio mother of two was sentenced to 10 days in jail and placed on three years probation after sending her kids to a school district in which they did not live. Kelly Williams-Bolar was sentenced by Judge Patricia Cosgrove on Tuesday and will begin serving her sentence immediately.

The jury deliberated for seven hours and the courtroom was packed as the sentence was handed down. She was convicted on two counts of tampering with court records after registering her two girls as living with Williams Bolars father when they actually lived with her. The family lived in the housing projects in Akron, Ohio, and the fathers address was in nearby Copley Township.

Additionally, Williams-Bolars father, Edward L. Williams, was charged with a fourth-degree felony of grand theft, in which he and his daughter are charged with defrauding the school system for two years of educational services for their girls. The court determined that sending their children to the wrong school was worth $30,500 in tuition.

When I read about this case, a few thoughts went through my mind. First, its clear that the court is trying to make Kelly Williams-Bolar into an example. Even the judge in the case, Patricia Cosgrove, said that her sentence was appropriate so that others who think they might defraud the school system perhaps will think twice.

Secondly, its interesting how courts find it convenient to make someone into an example when they happen to be poor and black. Id love to see how they prosecute wealthy white women who commit the same offense. Oh, I forgot: Most wealthy white women dont have to send their kids to the schools located near the projects.

Third, Im not sure why the court is treating this law-abiding mom like a thug who ran into a building with a shotgun and robbed the district of $30,000. Instead, they could simply subtract the amount it costs for her kids to go to the second school from the amount that would be spent for them to attend the first one. Im sure the difference would still be substantial, since American educational apartheid dictates that schools in poorer neighborhoods are of significantly less quality than other schools. The racial divisions within American schools are nothing less than a blatant and consistent human rights violation and should certainly be treated as such.

The Jamaica College student charged in 2007 with his schoolmate's murder on the school compound has been freed.

A 12-member jury yesterday found him not guilty of killing 17-year-old Mortiman Golding.

It was alleged at the Home Circuit Court trial that the boys had a dispute on November 26, 2007. The accused, who was 16, used a knife to stab Golding in the stomach. He died en route to hospital.

Following the summation by Supreme Court Judge Kay Beckford, the jury retired for an hour and returned a not guilty verdict.

A former Jamaica College student who was the main witness said he was present when the accused stabbed Golding. He said at the time Golding had a ratchet knife in his hand but it was closed.

Under cross-examination, defence lawyer Peter Champagnie suggested to him that he did not witness the stabbing and that was why he did not give a statement to the police until two months later. When Champagnie asked the witness to look at certain sections of his statement to the police, he declined.

The accused said in his defence that someone told him that Golding, armed with knife, was coming in his direction. Another student gave him a knife and he said he tried to prevent the incident.

When Golding pulled a knife from his shoes, he said he stabbed him in self-defence.

The student who had allegedly given the accused the knife was also charged in connection with the murder. He was freed in 2009 after Champagnie made a no-case submission at the preliminary inquiry in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

When Neil Brown got high on dangerous chemicals sold as bath salts, he took his skinning knife and slit his face and stomach repeatedly. Brown survived, but authorities say others haven't been so lucky after snorting, injecting or smoking powders with such innocuous-sounding names as Ivory Wave, Red Dove and Vanilla Sky.

 

Some say the effects of the powders are as powerful as abusing methamphetamine. Increasingly, law enforcement agents and poison control centers say the advertised bath salts with complex chemical names are an emerging menace in several U.S. states where authorities talk of banning their sale.

 

From the Deep South to California, emergency calls are being reported over-exposure to the stimulants the powders often contain: mephedrone and methylenedioxypyrovalerone, also known as MDPV.

 

Sold under such names as Ivory Wave, Bliss, White Lightning and Hurricane Charlie, the chemicals can cause hallucinations, paranoia, rapid heart rates and suicidal thoughts, authorities say. The chemicals are in products sold legally at convenience stores and on the Internet as bath salts and even plant foods. However, they aren't necessarily being used for the purposes on the label.

 

Mississippi lawmakers this week began considering a proposal to ban the sale of the powders, and a similar step is being sought in Kentucky. In Louisiana, the bath salts were outlawed by an emergency order after the state's poison center received more than 125 calls in the last three months of 2010 involving exposure to the chemicals.

In Brown's case, he said he had tried every drug from heroin to crack and was so shaken by terrifying hallucinations that he wrote one Mississippi paper urging people to stay away from the advertised bath salts.

"I couldn't tell you why I did it," Brown said, pointing to his scars. "The psychological effects are still there."

 

While Brown survived, sheriff's authorities in one Mississippi county say they believe one woman overdosed on the powders there. In southern Louisiana, the family of a 21-year-old man says he cut his throat and ended his life with a gunshot. Authorities are investigating whether a man charged with capital murder in the December death of a Tippah County, Miss., sheriff's deputy was under the influence of the bath salts.

 

The stimulants aren't regulated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, but are facing federal scrutiny. Law officers say some of the substances are being shipped from Europe, but origins are still unclear.

MULTAN, Pakistan Police say relatives of a young Pakistani woman are suspected of electrocuting her for marrying a man against their wishes.

Police official Afzal Lodhi says authorities arrested 21-year-old Saima Bibi's father and three of her uncles Sunday in a small village in eastern Pakistan.

War is looming in sections of west Kingston as a group of young thugs are said to be working hard at ensuring that nobody, unless appointed, rises as don of the area.

THE STAR has learnt that the young men are the sons of a number of high-ranking men from Tivoli Gardens, and they have reportedly made it known across west Kingston that only men related to them can be considered to take up leadership of the community.

In a recent interview, Deputy Superintendent Arthur Brown, head of the Kingston West Division, said the police were urging anybody who has intentions of filling the shoes of Christopher 'Dudus' Coke to think twice.

Coke was extradited last year after evading a massive military/police operation in May, which led to the deaths of more than 70 civilians and at least three members of the security forces.

Since his extradition, a number of men expressed interest in becoming west Kingston strongman. These intentions have, however, been met with resistance by both the police and thugs from the area.

Last November, the police asked Andy Miller, also called Andy Fowl, to turn himself in after getting information that he was one such person interested in taking over west Kingston.

Two Fridays ago, Winston 'Black John' Pennington, was found with a single gunshot wound to the head in a section of Tivoli Gardens known as 'Top Ten'.

While the police say they are yet to identify any suspects in the murder, checks with persons from the community found that fingers are being pointed at a man said to be the son of a very influential resident of west Kingston.

"Yo, a some young yute a run di place now, when mi seh run di place mi nuh mean as in dem a di don, but a dem a mek sure seh only man weh inna fi dem link can run west Kingston and nobody else dem seh. Di likkle man dem hot and dem naw tek no talk," one thug said when THE STAR visited the community on the weekend.

Pennington's murder is said to be a clear message to those like him, and those who supported his dreams of donship.

"Right now di people kinda a fret because di man dem weh did a support 'Black John' a seh a eediat ting gwaan because him was a good person and him did a look out fi everybody, not just Tivoli people but all people from Denham Town and Hannan Town," another man explained. As a result, there is said to be tension among men from various sections of west Kingston as some persons side with the sons, while others say they do not appreciate their views and actions.

A final interesting blow by Judge Cosgrove that reflects the experience of marginalized African Americans in the criminal justice system relates to Williams-Bolars quest to obtain a teaching degree. The single mother was in school studying to become a teacher so that she could create a better life for her girls. But that wont happen for her family now, given that the judge has all but shut the door on her chance to fulfill her dream:

Because of the felony conviction, you will not be allowed to get your teaching degree under Ohio law as it stands today, the judge said. The courts taking into consideration that is also a punishment that you will have to serve.

This case is a textbook example of everything that remains racially wrong with Americas educational, economic and criminal justice systems. Lets start from the top: Had Ms. Williams-Bolar been white, she likely would never have been prosecuted for this crime in the first place (Id love for them to show me a white woman in that area whos gone to jail for the same crime). She also is statistically not as likely to be living in a housing project with the need to break an unjust law in order to create a better life for her daughters. Being black is also correlated with the fact that Williams-Bolar likely didnt have the resources to hire the kinds of attorneys who could get her out of this mess (since the average black familys wealth is roughly 1/10 that of white families). Finally, economic inequality is impactful here because thats the reason that Williams-Bolars school district likely has fewer resources than the school she chose for her kids. In other words, black people have been historically robbed of our economic opportunities, leading to a two-tiered reality that we are then imprisoned for attempting to alleviate. That, my friends, is American Racism 101.

Houston, TX - Surveillance video continued to roll inside Java Gold as two men walked inside to appraise some jewelry.
Owner Mehmood Ghaznavi didn't suspect anything was wrong as the men sat down to chat at his desk about the jewelry, but a third man would walk in and Ghaznavi would find his life hanging in the balance.

The three men pulled out their handguns and began demanding cash and jewelry and even started unleashing a beating on the Ghaznavi's face, pistol whipping him as many as four times.

Ghaznavi said, "Because they got the gun on your face and they are hitting you with the gun hard, you know. It was a matter of seconds, you live or you die. "

The two men, Erion Fountain and Charston Meachum are now in custody awaiting trial, but the third man is still on the loose.

Moscow (CNN) -- Terrorists detonated a bomb at Moscow's busiest airport on Monday, killing 35 people and wounding 152, Russian authorities said.

President Dmitry Medvedev, who called the bombing a terrorist attack, ordered additional security at airports and transportation hubs around the country, and Moscow police went on high alert in case of additional bombs.

The explosion occurred about 4:30 p.m. at the entrance of the international arrivals section of Domodedovo Airport, Itar-Tass said, citing a spokeswoman for the Russian Investigative Committee, Tatyana Morozova.

State TV aired video of the smoke-filled terminal, including what appeared to be bodies and luggage on the ground.

The Russian National Anti-Terrorist Committee said 35 people were dead and 152 had been wounded in the explosion.

State TV, citing Russian authorities, said the bombing was the act of a suicide bomber who stuffed a homemade bomb with small metal objects to make it more deadly, then activated it in a crowded area where many people were waiting for arriving passengers. CNN could not independently verify those claims.

A heavy police presence remained outside the airport nearly four hours after the explosion, and more than 10 ambulances left the airport with lights flashing and sirens screeching.

Incoming flights scheduled to land at Domodedovo were being diverted to Moscow's other airports, Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo, Russian TV said.

However, airport spokeswoman Yelena Galanova told Russian state TV that the airport was "operating as usual."

"There have been no departure delays. We were shut for only about 20 minutes after the explosion," she told state TV.

An airport employee, Andrei Surkov, told CNN that while the international arrivals area is still closed, international passengers were being routed through the domestic terminal located on the other end of the airport.

Lufthansa spokeswoman Claudia Lange said the airline has suspended all flights to Domodedovo until further notice.

Elina Bakhtina told state TV she was at the airport cafe she owns when the explosion occurred.

"The blast must have been very strong, because our cafe is about 100 meters from the arrivals area. When we heard the blast, glass just started falling from the ceiling," she said.

Tatyana Papova, who was waiting at passport control when the explosion occurred, told state TV that escalators stopped working at the baggage claim area and airport employees started breaking down walls to help clear people from the area.

Domodedovo is 22 kilometers (14 miles) southeast of Moscow. According to the airport's website, it is the largest of Moscow's three airports, as well as the busiest in terms of passenger traffic.

U.S. President Barack Obama called the bombing a "premeditated attack against innocent civilians."

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen condemned the attack and urged greater cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said British officials are "in urgent contact with Russian authorities to establish the facts and to provide consular support to any British nationals who may have been affected."

German and Isreali leaders also condemned the attacks.

Will Geddes, terrorism expert and managing director of International Corporate Protection Group, called the bombing a "very significant terror strike."

"To strike in the airport -- which is fundamentally believed and understood by many to be one of the most secure types of installations in a city or in a country -- to have such a devastating an attack with such a tragic result, means that they had planned this considerably well and gone ahead in achieving their aims," he said.

Russia has a long history of dealing with terror attacks.

In 2004, two airplanes that took off from Domodedovo exploded, killing at least 89 people in an attack blamed on Chechen suicide bombers.

More recently, female suicide bombers struck the Moscow metro during rush hour in March, setting off two explosions that killed at least 38 people and wounded more than 60. Chechen rebels claimed responsibility for that attack.

In November 2009, an explosive device derailed an express train, killing at least 26 people.

But there's a line which the TV cameras should not cross, according to Kim Kardashian.

The 30-year-old Keeping Up With The Kardashians star took to her blog today, to warn girls against idolising the stars of shows like MTV's Teen Mom.

'It seems that shows like Teen Mom are all of a sudden making teen pregnancy seem cool in the eyes of young girls...but girls, these are not people you should idolise!' she wrote.

Kim, who looked low key in jeans and a casual cardigan as she left the MTV studios in New York yesterday, was affected by a teenage pregnancy story which ran as she made an earlier appearance on The Today Show.

The report said that 90 students had either given birth this year or were pregnant at a school in Memphis.

'When I think back to when I was 16, there is no way I would even have considered having a baby,' wrote Kim, who is currently promoting her new reality spin-off, Kourtney and Kim Take New York.

'Having a baby is one of the biggest, and most life-changing decisions a person can make and while I'm not saying that no teen is in the position to raise a child, having a baby so young shouldn't be seen as the trendy thing to do.'

Teen pregnancy TV shows such as Teen Mom, Teen Mom 2 and 16 and Pregnant have made stars out of Leah Messer and Jenelle Evans and Amber Portwood, who earns $280,000 a year from her appearances in the MTV show.

But today, she hit back at Kim's comments.

"There's actually a study that shows since the original 16 and Pregnant aired, the number of teen pregnancies have gone down,' Amber told E! News.

'Last time I checked, Kim Kardashian had a sex tape floating around on the internet and I'm pretty sure she made a lot of money off of it.

'She made a sex tape when she was younger and she wants to bash the girls on Teen Mom?'

According to Amber, who has a two-year-old daughter called Leah,  the show does not make the girls' lives look easy.

'If you read the articles about the show, they do nothing but talk about how the show reveals how hard it is for all of us,'

'It doesn't glamorise anything. It shows the heartache we've all gone through.

'We may be 'celebrities' because our face is out there, but it's only because we've done some bad things. That's not glamorous.'

A young man's inability to keep a secret is being blamed for him now at the hospital seeking medical attention after a 19-year-old girl severely bit his penis while giving him oral sex.

Information gathered by THE WEEKEND STAR is that the 23-year-old man from near Torrington Park, Kingston, was on the receiving end of oral sex on Wednesday night, when the teenage girl suddenly and intentionally sank her teeth into his member.

When THE WEEKEND STAR visited the area yesterday, residents claimed that the girl did so because she had recently become the topic of discussion after the man is said to have told others about her oral skills.

"Him chat too much, yu neva hear di twins dem seh when di gal dem do di ting don't tell nobody," said King, a 22-year-old resident of Price Lane where the incident reportedly took place.

Other residents spoke of a similar scenario, claiming the alleged biter was enraged by the man's decision to speak of what they regularly did behind closed doors.

They said the teenage girl, who frequents the area, though not from there, had even been dubbed 'sugar pan', a nickname given to her after the man allegedly told a story about pushing his penis into a container of sugar before engaging in oral sex with her.

Other residents even claimed that shortly before their fellow resident was seen rushing into a taxi, the girl was seen walking to a house where they normally meet and saying she has 'somebody to sort out'.

A 20-year-old man who identified himself as a relative of the injured man, and said he had indeed been bitten, said the girl has since fled to another parish. Reports said the man has been admitted to the hospital but officials were tight-lipped when contacted yesterday.

While in the community yesterday, THE WEEKEND STAR came upon a group of men, one of whom claimed to know the girl, and who also offered to contact her via cellular phone. The resident used the speaker feature on his cellular phone so THE WEEKEND STAR could listen in as he spoke to her.

The woman who he contacted was heard saying there was no truth to the story about her biting the man's penis.

She claimed they were only having sex when the man noticed *la*hd and decided to go to the hospital. Hearing this, the group of men then erupted into laughter and in harmony shouted, "a lie she a tell."

Meanwhile, one police source from the Kingston Western Division said he heard of the incident yesterday through a female friend who lives in the area.

He, however, said no formal report was made about it.

A second-grade teacher at Markham Elementary school in Oakland has been placed on leave because of reports that two students engaged in oral sex while in his classroom. KTLA reports that in addition to the alleged oral sex, there was another incident in which some students were taking off their clothes.

To address the issue, Markham Elementary principal Pam Booker sent a letter (PDF) home to families apologizing for the alleged incidents and offering counseling to any children that need it. She says, "...I apologize for this and assure you that we are collaborating with counselors and parents to provide support to those involved, address any concerns and take whatever actions are necessary to ensure that a similar act does not occur again." She also addressed parents' outrage: "...we pride ourselves in providing a safe learning environment for all of our children and the events as reported represent an unacceptable lack of supervision. I understand that there is great anger over this news."

The Oakland Tribune quotes Oakland school district spokesman Troy Flint, who maintains that the teacher was present during both incidents but unaware of what was going on.
