Toshiba was first to score a high def recorder capable of stuffing HD content onto your choice of hard disk, blue-laser disc, or standard DVD. However, its HD Rec solution suffers from one little problem: the recently deceased HD DVD format. Now Mitsubishi steps into the void with a pair of 500GB DVR-BZ200 and 250GB DVR-BZ200 Blu-ray recorders. Both feature support for Blu-ray's AVCREC specification allowing them to record about 2 hours of Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) content in MPEG4 AVC/H.264 format direct to standard 4.7GB DVDs. That's about 8 hours to a single-sided Blu-ray disc. Now the catch, the standard is limited to ISDB broadcasts making this a Japan-only solution for the time being. Nevertheless, we expect to see more AVCREC capable devices including camcorders and PC optical drives as the standard prepares for take off. Damn you ATSC!

MICHAEL 'Mikey Dread' Campbell, the maverick broadcaster who introduced underground reggae to mainstream radio in the late 1970s through his Dread At The Controls programme, died last Saturday in the United States.

Campbell, who was 54 years old, died six months after he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. A posting on his website, dreadatthecontrols.com, said he passed away at his sister's home in Connecticut.

Dread At The Controls aired for two years on the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC) where Campbell began working as a transmitter engineer in 1976.

Cutting-edge music

He played the cutting-edge music of producers King Tubby and Augustus Pablo and dancehall singers like Linval Thompson.

In a 2003 interview, the Portland-born Campbell listed Dread At The Controls as one of his biggest achievements.

"Before that show come along, people at the JBC wanted to play classical music which had no relevance to Jamaican people," he said.

Campbell joined the JBC at a time when the hot jocks were the established Errol 'E.T.' Thompson and a rising Barry 'Barry G' Gordon. He said he was given the go-ahead to start Dread At The Controls in 1977 by Ossie Harvey and Rupert Linton who were senior members of the JBC production department.

The show's time slot was a novelty. It started at midnight on Sundays and ran for four and a half hours; before Dread At The Controls, the JBC signed off at midnight.

Two years later, Campbell and the JBC parted ways after the station declined his request to give Dread At The Controls a prime time slot. He went into record production full time, working with the influential British punk band The Clash and later Guns 'N' Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin.

Michael Campbell is the second noted Jamaican music personality to die in three weeks. Producer Joe Gibbs died on February 21.
Dreader than dread
Michael Campbell was also a respected artiste and producer. As 'Mikey Dread', he recorded hit songs such as Barber Saloon and African Map.

He produced fellow JBC worker Edi Fitzroy's Miss Molly and The Gun and Imperial Majesty by Rod Taylor.

Disc jockey Barry'Barry G' Gordon once described IRIE FM as a 24-hour version of Dread At The Controls.

Attended Titchfield High School.

Campbell boasted that he broke Althea and Donna's big hit Uptown Top Ranking and Gregory Isaacs' Soon Forward on Dread At The Controls.

Etana takes her positive vibes to the streets

Etana @ Digicel 2.jpg

On Friday March 7, VP recording artist Etana, took time out to drop in on customer service representatives at New Kingston's Digicel Call Center. Mingling amongst ardent fans, she shared love and laughs with these Digicel staff members who had previously chosen her as their favorite from a poll of dancehall and reggae artists.

It was a surprise visit by Etana who signed autographs, took photographs and absolutely enjoyed spending quality 'down time' with a group who reciprocated by showing the conscious songstress how much she is valued in the community. She was presented with an LG Chocalat slide cell phone as a token of the Digicel workers' gratitude.

Etana @ Peace Concert 4.jpg

It was a day of special appearances and after that first stop, Etana was wisked off by road manager, Lerone Chutkan, to attend the 'Peace and Prosperity' gathering in May Pen.

This time, the 'Warrior Love' queen was a specially invited guest of the Ministry of Health for their Peace Day Concert. Etana extended a warm welcome to the citizens of May Pen, who came out in huge numbers to see her and a few other artists perform for Peace. Young and old showed up for the event, organized to bring awareness to the need for dire changes in a community that has been experiencing extreme violence since the start of 2008.

Headlining the concert, Etana did not hold back any of her signature singing power. She had the audience singing along in harmony with her every word while many scrambled to get up front for a closer peek at the natural beauty.

Etana @ Peace Concert 10.jpg

After giving the crowd all their favorites like: "Roots," "Warrior Love" and her latest release, "I Am Not Afraid," Etana spent time signing autographs and greeting her fans. One most exhuberant onlooker was none other than, Motor Bike Police Officer, Adolph Ewart, who took care of Etana until the very last drop.

He arranged a diplomatic style escort for the singer as she left May Pen, taking her all the way to the highway leading to Kingston.

Although exhausted Etana reflected on the well spent day by giving words of encouragement for a community that is yearning for peace.

She said, "Respect goes out to Superintendent of Clarendon Police, Mr. Radcliffe Lewis and all the Peace Day Volunteers who made my rest tent comfortable, I hope that the Communities in and around May Pen Clarendon can begin to live good amongst one another and help build this great nation called Jamaica. Until next I see you Blessed Love."

It's already got its own toilet paper in Japan, but the rest of us are still patiently waiting for Vista SP1 to officially hit -- but maybe not for much longer: DailyTech is reporting that SP1 will be available for download starting tomorrow, with boxed copies to follow on store shelves Wednesday. While Microsoft's PR team wouldn't confirm anything other than "on track for mid-March" to The Register, it seems the company has been a little more forthcoming with its pals at Amazon, which is also listing March 18th as the release date for SP1. That's some fishy fish, but there's only one way to find out for reals -- nap time, here we come.

Chinese hackers: No site is safe

March 17, 2008
Started By xForcex14 Comments

ZHOUSHAN, China (CNN) -- They operate from a bare apartment on a Chinese island. They are intelligent 20-somethings who seem harmless. But they are hard-core hackers who claim to have gained access to the world's most sensitive sites, including the Pentagon.

The leader of these Chinese hackers says there "is always a weakness" on networks that allows cyber break-ins.

In fact, they say they are sometimes paid secretly by the Chinese government -- a claim the Beijing government denies.

"No Web site is one hundred percent safe. There are Web sites with high-level security, but there is always a weakness," says Xiao Chen, the leader of this group.

"Xiao Chen" is his online name. Along with his two colleagues, he does not want to reveal his true identity. The three belong to what some Western experts say is a civilian cyber militia in China, launching attacks on government and private Web sites around the world.

If there is a profile of a cyber hacker, these three are straight from central casting -- young and thin, with skin pale from spending too many long nights in front of a computer.

One hacker says he is a former computer operator in the People's Liberation Army; another is a marketing graduate; and Xiao Chen says he is a self-taught programmer.

"First, you must know about the Web site you want to attack. You must know what program it is written with," says Xiao Chen. "There is a saying, 'Know about both yourself and the enemy, and you will be invincible.'"

CNN decided to withhold the address of these hackers' Web site, but Xiao Chen says it has been operating for more than three years, with 10,000 registered users. The site offers tools, articles, news and flash tutorials about hacking.

Private computer experts in the United States from iDefense Security Intelligence, which provides cybersecurity advice to governments and Fortune 500 companies, say the group's site "appears to be an important site in the broader Chinese hacking community."

Arranging a meeting with the hackers took weeks of on-again, off-again e-mail exchanges. When they finally agreed, CNN was told to meet them on the island of Zhoushan, just south of Shanghai and a major port for China's navy.

The apartment has cement floors and almost no furniture. What they do have are three of the latest computers. They are cautious when it comes to naming the Web sites they have hacked.

But eventually Xiao Chen claims two of his colleagues -- not the ones with him in the room -- have hacked into the Pentagon and downloaded information, although he wouldn't specify what was gleaned. CNN has no way to confirm if his claim is true.

"They would not publicize this," he says of someone who hacks the U.S. Defense Department. "It is very sensitive."

This week, the Pentagon said computer networks in the United States, Germany, Britain and France were hit last year by what they call "multiple intrusions," many of them originating from China.

At a congressional hearing in Washington last week, administration officials testified that the government's cyber initiative has fallen far short of what is required. Most alarming, the officials said, there has never been a full damage assessment of federal agency networks.

"We are here today because we must do more," said Robert Jamison, a top official in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. "Defending the federal system in its current configuration is a significant challenge."

U.S. officials have been cautious not to directly accuse the Chinese military or its government of hacking into its network.

But David Sedney, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for East Asia, says, "The way these intrusions are conducted are certainly consistent with what you would need if you were going to actually carry out cyber warfare."

Beijing hit back at that, denying such an allegation and calling on the United States to provide proof. "If they have any evidence, I hope they would provide it. Then, we can cooperate on this issue," Qin Gang, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said during a regular press briefing this week.

But Xiao Chen says after the alleged Pentagon attack, his colleagues were paid by the Chinese government. Again, CNN has no way to independently confirm if that is true.

His allegations brought strenuous denials from Beijing. "I am telling you honestly, the Chinese government does not do such a thing," Qin said.

But if Xiao Chen is telling the truth, it appears his colleagues launched a freelance attack -- not initiated by Beijing, but paid for after the fact. "These hacker groups in my opinion are not agents of the Chinese state," says James Mulvenon from the Center for Intelligence Research and Analysis, which works with the U.S. intelligence community.

"They are sort of useful idiots for the Beijing regime."

He adds, "These young hackers are tolerated by the regime provided that they do not conduct attacks inside of China."

One of the biggest problems experts say is trying to prove where a cyber attack originates from, and that they say allows hackers like Xiao Chen to operate in a virtual world of deniability.

And across China, there could be thousands just like him, all trying to prove themselves against some of the most secure Web sites in the world.

findImg.php?pic_size=200&table_name=news_img_tab&table_field=img_id&img_id=1282 Macka Diamond was recruited by a group of Christians to show their women how to bring back the spice to their bedroom love lives.

Last weekend, Macka was booked as a speaker/facilitator by the City Of Priase for church's conference to talk to the ladies about sex, basically not being an angel in the bedroom.

The title of the conference was Angel by Day... Monster by Night.

The ladies asked questions and were treated with advice about sex from Macka they taught Macka a thing or two as well, as different cultures do things differently. The name of the church is City of Praise.

"Initially we had refused to take their offer, but were b****arded by the Pastor, who said that ladies in the church are losing their husbands because they were too timid in the bedroom and so he wanted someone who would not be shy to come and talk with them and Macka was at the top of the list," Karl Larmond, Macka's publicist.

Yeah, there's a lot of good, civically-minded things you could do with your cash... but wouldn't it be more fun to blow it on a 1GB iPod? If you're dying to prove how little Ł20,000 (or around $40,000) means to you, here's your chance. A jeweler named Thomas Heyerdahl has created an 18 karat, diamond studded, white and pink gold iPod shuffle, meant to be auctioned at a charity in London. We've seen an almost identical version which appeared to be selling just for the heck of it -- at least this one seems to be going to good cause.

Dillon County (WBTW) WBTW-TV is reporting that a 17-year-old was arrested Monday by Dillon police after they say he gave two children, ages four and five, the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea.

17_year_old_031108.jpg

Officers arrested 17-year-old Kayle Alford and charged him with criminal sexual conduct with minors younger than 11, according to scnow.com, WBTW-TVs website.

Investigators say Alford is responsible for giving the young children the STD.

Dillon police say they received help from the Department of Social Services, according to the website.

Now that recent Jessies Law legislation is in effect, Alford faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted on the charges, because of the victims young ages.

Alfords bond hearing has not yet been set.

Dillon Police also arrested 41-year-old Tabitha Scarborough, according to WBTW-TV.

Police charged her with harboring a fugitive, because investigators say she allowed Alford to stay in her home.

Scarboroughs bond hearing is expected sometime Tuesday afternoon.

Manchester High edge Manning's

Manchester High edge Manning's Jonique Gaynor, Staff Reporter Though the final scores were not impressive, the match between The Manning's School and Manchester High was perhaps one of the most exciting of the entire season. Both teams were yesterday competing for a spot in the quarter-finals of Television Jamaica's Schools' Challenge Quiz. After a very tense third section, the Manchester team came out on top, but just by a mere two points. The final score was 26-24. The first section of the match was evenly contested and that was the first indication that this match would be a very exciting one. The fact that this section ended with both teams tied on five points only added to the intensity. Section two was however, where Manchester began to pull away from their opponents. They amassed a total of 17 points in this round, taking their score to 24 after a judges' review, and an additional point. Mannings on the other hand, only gained 11 more points, bringing their score to 16. Though it seemed like the Manning's were dead and buried, they made a very impressive comeback in the final section. Though they did well, they were two points shy of catching up with their opponents and, ultimately, two points shy of the victory. Joy West-Carr, coach of the Manchester team, told THE STAR, "I don't think they performed to their fullest potential. They could have done much better. We know what they have to do for the next match and we congratulate Manning's for doing well." Manning's coach, Jermaine Williams, said it was his first time working with the team but said he was optimistic that they would have taken it. He said, "We put a lot of hard work into reaching this far and although we would have hoped to go further, it's a big accomplishment to go this far. Next year, we will be stronger and better and we'll have three of our team members. We're hoping to pull it off next year." The Manning's team : Randy Goldson, Andre White, Yovan Shaw, Adion Sutherland. The Manchester team : Darren Gooden, Paul Allen, Thadeka Brown, Courtney Shaw.

A medical doctor accused of sexually molesting a teenage boy is to appear in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday to answer several charges.

Dr Dwight Pusey, who is attached to the Kingston Public Hospital, was arrested and charged on Saturday. He was granted $150,000 bail with a surety.

He is facing charges of indecent assault, uttering a forged document and obtaining goods by fraud.

It is being alleged that the offences were committed in November last year.

The allegations are that some time last year the 17-year-old teenager went to the hospital suffering from pains to the neck and shoulder. He was examined by the accused who told him that he needed to be circumcised.

It is further alleged that telephone numbers were exchanged between the teenager and the doctor and arrangements were made for the circumcision to take place in November last year.

When the complainant went to a private section of the hospital where the circumcision was to take place it is alleged that Dr Pusey sucked the complainant's penis.

After he allegedly performed the surgery he took the complainant in his car to a pharmacy where he handed in a prescription which was allegedly in the accused's name and bore the signature of another doctor which the Crown is alleging to be forged.

A health card was allegedly used to get medication which was given to the complainant.

The complainant made a report to the police and Dr Pusey was subsequently arrested and charged.

Calabar, Holmwood again!

St Jago's Nickel Ashmeade (left) storms home to beat Calabar's Ramone McKenzie (centre) and highly fancied teammate Yohan Blake in the boys' Class One 200 metres final yesterday. Ashmeade won in 21.04 seconds, ahead of McKenzie (21.05) and Blake (21.31).

Elton Tucker, Assistant Sport Editor

CALABAR HIGH held off a persistent challenge from archrivals Kingston College to notch their 21st lien on the Mortimer Geddes Trophy on the fourth and final day of the GraceKennedy/ISSA Boys' and Girls' Championships at the National Stadium yesterday.

KC, the 30-time champions, chased relentlessly from the opening event but Calabar maintained at least an eight-point gap the entire day. Victory was virtually sealed for the Red Hills Road-based school after Jovan Hardware cleared 2.05 metres to win the Class Two high jump ahead of KC's Jonathan Reid, 2.00m. At that point, Calabar led by as many as 33 points with just seven of 37 events, including the relays, to come.

At press time last night with the boys' Class One high jump, 5,000m and 4x400m to be completed, Calabar were on 255 points. KC 213, Jamaica College 153, St. Jago 129 and Wolmer's 121 completed the top five.

Top five girls teams

The top five girls teams after 41 events were Holmwood 321, Vere 196.5, Edwin Allen 184, Manchester 141 and St. Jago 120.5.

The girls' title was sewn up by Holmwood Technical even before competition began on the final day. The now six-time champions came into yesterday leading by 63.5 points, 151 to Vere Technical's 87.5 and piled on the points on the final afternoon.

The much-anticipated Class One sprint relay clash between Calabar and St. Jago High failed to materialise. St Jago, who set a fantastic 39.78 seconds record in the heats on Wednesday, did not get the baton around. They fumbled the first change and fell well behind and did not complete the second handover. Calabar's boys kept cool heads and won in 40.28 seconds from Camperdown, 40.59, and Herbert Morrison, 40.79.

In one of the big sprint events of the final day, 100m champion Yohan Blake fell victim to his teammate, Nickel Ashmeade, and Calabar's Ramone McKenzie in the Class One boys' 200m final.

Blake led 50 metres out and as the more than 15,000 spectators rose to their feet, he was gobbled up by the far-striding McKenzie. No sooner had McKenzie taken the lead, however, then Ashmeade came with a storming run to grab gold on the line. Only one-hundredth of a second separated the top two athletes. Ashmeade got the nod in 21.04 seconds, McKenzie was next in 21.05 and Blake faded to third in 21.31.

Calabar had started the day by taking two of three 400m finals. Carlton Cousins powered through in the straight to score an emphatic victory in the Class Three boys' 400m final. Cousins clocked 51.99 seconds to finish ahead of St Elizabeth Technical's Demar Levy (52.36) and Deveraux Senior of Wolmer's Boys, 52.69.

Destroyed rivals

McKenzie, running out of lane eight, destroyed his rivals from the front to hand Calabar their second victory in the Class One 400m final. The 2007 Class Two champion, crossed the line in 46.62. Pre-meet favourite Riker Hylton of St. Jago was well back in second (47.33) while Darrion Bent of Manning's took third in 47.52.

Holmwood's Bobby-Gaye Wilkins bagged the Class One one-lap event easily in 52.46, brushing aside challenges from second-placed Kayon Robinson of Vere (54.67) and bronze medal winner Shakeeri Cole of Edwin Allen, 54.85.

The other 400m champions were Sandrae Farquharson of Manchester High, 54.25, in the girls' Class Three, Herbert Morrison's pair of Antonique Campbell and Teivaskie Lewin in Class Two. Campbell won the girls' event in 54.58 while Lewin captured the boys' race in 48.63.

In the Class One girls' 100m hurdles final. Rosemarie Carty of the Convent of Mercy (Alpha) came back from an injury which kept her out of last year's meet to win the event in 14.17. Wolmer's Janelle Gordon took silver in 14.25 and Kaymarie Jones of Vere was third in 14.41.

Jamaica College's Waqar DaCosta added 800m gold to the 1,500m crown he won on Friday evening. DaCosta won the Class Two 800m in 1:57.77, beating his teammate Earl Grant, 1:58.22. Holmwood's Kevin White was third in 1:59.20.

Campion's Theon O'Connor retained the Class One 800m title clocking 1:51.15 to beat Conroy Crossman of Edwin Allen, 1:53.03, and Calabar's 1,500m champion Andre Thomas, 1;54.30.

A man on his way to anger management class became angry and struck a woman, authorities said.

Justin John Boudin, 27, pleaded guilty Friday to fifth-degree assault in Ramsey County District Court and can expect to face a sentence for time served in jail, at least 120 days, and probation when he is sentenced May 5, the county attorney's office said.

According to a criminal complaint, Boudin was waiting at a bus stop on August 29 when he accosted a 59-year-old woman and others.

"Why don't you show me some respect?" he allegedly yelled at the woman.

When she took out a cellphone to call police, he hit her in the face, according to the complaint. When a 63-year-old man tried to stop Boudin, Boudin hit him with a blue folder - which fell on the ground - and fled.

Police tracked him down through the folder, which included his anger management homework and his name, the complaint said.

When I open C drive by double click it'll pop up Open With windows and ask me to choose the program to open C drive.?

Do one of the following or both:

FIRST SETTING

You need to set permissions on those volumes. Also, you need higher level account (administrator level is the highest).

To check whether your account is administrator one, open the control panel (classic view) and open "User Accounts". In the lower left corner should be your account name and account type (should read "computer administrator")

To set permissions follow these steps:
Open control panel (classic view)/folder options. Scroll down advanced settings window and uncheck the "use simple file sharing".
Apply and rightclick on the volumes in question, select properties and click on "security" tab. There you'll see detailed sharing permissions/restrictions for all relevant accounts on that particular drive/file/folder. (Taking that you have administrative permissions) click on "Administrators ([computer name]\Administrators)" (first one from the top) and check allow on "full control" and click "apply".
If you see your account name on the list, either remove it or allow full control. If you are only user on that PC I suggest removing it from the list, for you are administrator and comply with "administrators" permissions.
After setting the permission, click on the "advanced" button. In the first tab select "Administrators ([computer name]\Administrators)" (same as before) and check the "Replace permissions entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects" and apply.

SECOND SETTING

try this
-------
open my comp>goto tools>folder options
select "show hidden files"
uncheck "show system files"

goto each drive by rightclick>explore only. DONOT double click drives.

delete the file with the name "autorun.inf"

restart comp OR endtask n run explorer.exe thru taskmanager

this will solve the problem....

NYON, Switzerland (AP) - Arsenal will face Liverpool in the Champions League quarterfinals, and Manchester United will play AS Roma for the third time in two years.

Barcelona, one of the title favorites, managed to avoid all four English teams left in the competition in Friday's draw and faces Germany's Schalke while Chelsea takes on Fenerbahce

UEFA also made the provisional semifinal draw. The winner of Arsenal and Liverpool meets either Fenerbahce or Chelsea. Schalke or Barcelona faces Roma or Manchester United.

It's the first time that four teams from the same country have made it to the last eight, all hoping to make it to the May 21 final in Moscow.

"I think it's challenging, interesting as well. It's a good opportunity to be consistent against Liverpool because it's three very important games for us," said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger whose team meets Liverpool in the Premier League between the two Champions League matches. "It's amazing but not surprising because I have seen that many times."

The draw also means that Arsenal now faces last season's losing finalist, having beaten winner AC Milan.

"We just knocked Milan out and that was a big hurdle and the next one is the (losing) finalist," said Wenger, whose team faces Liverpool in European competition for the first time.

Rafa Benitez' Liverpool ousted the other Milan team, Inter, to reach the last eight.

"It's not the worst moment for us," Benitez said. "We have confidence, playing well, scoring goals, progressing well in the Champions League, beating an Italian team top of their table, one of the best teams in Europe.

"They (Arsenal) know it will be tough for both. Nobody wanted to play an English team."

The Arsenal-Liverpool matchup at least guarantees the Premier League a spot in the semifinals where the winner could then face Chelsea. If it's Liverpool-Chelsea, they would meet in the tournament for the fourth straight season and take their tally of meetings in all competitions to 23 in four years.

Liverpool ousted Chelsea in the semifinals in 2005 and '07 and they also met in group action in 2005-06.

Arsenal, the only current league leader left in the competition, ousted defending and seven-time champion AC Milan in the previous round. Two seasons ago, the Gunners made it to the final only to lose 2-1 to Barcelona.

Liverpool knocked out Serie A leader and champion Inter Milan, and, despite its shaky form in the Premier League, is a perennial powerhouse in the Champions League under Benitez.

The Reds hit back from 3-0 at halftime to beat AC Milan on penalties in the 2005 final in Istanbul after a 3-3 draw to win the title for the fifth time. Last year, it reached the final again only to lose 2-1 to Milan.

Manchester United and Roma have also become regular opponents.

Last season, United beat the Serie A team 7-1 at home to reach the semifinal after a 2-1 loss in Rome. They also met at the group stage this term with United winning 1-0 at home and the two teams drawing 1-1 in Rome.

"It's incredible," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "I had a strong feeling that we would draw an English side.

"It's amazing to think that we will have played Roma six times in a year. That makes it an intriguing tie because we know a lot about Roma, but they know a lot about us."

While Manchester United eliminated French champion Lyon in the previous round, Roma reached the quarterfinals for the second season in a row by ending Real Madrid's hopes of winning the title.

Grand finale for Boyz

Grand finale for Boyz . tackle Coritiba FC in last match on tour Sean Williams with the Reggae Boyz in Curitiba, Brazil Sunday, March 16, 2008 CURITIBA, Brazil - Like Jamaica, Rene Simoes is a hero here. He enjoys God-like status in the city of Curitiba after guiding their football team from the Serie B to the Serie A Serie B last year. The Brazilian's greatest achievement as a coach has to be the extraordinary feat of qualifying Jamaica for World Cup Finals in France 1998 - a first for both him and Jamaica. Members of the Reggae Boyz and Coritiba Football Club sit together after respective training sessions a the Brazilian club's training centre near Curitiba, Brazil, yesterday. (Photo: Sean Williams) When his old club, Coritiba, host the Reggae Boyz in a practice game today at 11:00 am (9:00 am Jamaica time) at the Estadio Municipal dos Pinhao, one suspects the fans will not be cheering for the home team nor Jamaica, but more likely the adoration will be trained on Simoes. It is expected that both sets of players will have their priorities on the field of play worked out early, however: play hard, play well and aim to win. Simoes' status for them at that point would be of little significance when the first whistle goes. Coritiba will be taking this game seriously as they drive to do better than their state rivals - Parana Club and Atletico Paranaense - whom the touring home-based Boyz defeated 3-2 and 2-1, respectively. A win over Jamaica today will give Coritiba fans bragging rights and ammunition against their rivals. "Coritiba are coming not to party, they're coming to play a game. The rivalry between the three clubs here is so intense. because we beat Parana Club and Atletico, Coritiba will be coming strong, and if they beat us, the supporters are going tease the other two," Simoes said. Jamaica's superb performance in defeating Atletico, one of the wealthiest clubs in Brazil, could put added pressure on the team, which is at the end of their three-week tour. "The good thing about the game against Atletico on Thursday is that the players enjoyed it; they were so proud, and they felt so good. But the bad side is that in the game against Coritiba they have to perform and now Coritiba are looking at them very seriously," said the Brazilian. "Every day you have to kill a lion to prove yourself, that is what top-class football is about," Simoes urged his players. He did not name a starting 11 yesterday, but considering the team's classy display against Atletico, he is expected to go with Duwayne Kerr in goal; Adrian Reid, Christopher Jackson, Keniel Moodie and Obrian Woodbine in defence; the brilliant Rudolph Austin, who scored a beauty against Atletico, Nicholy Finlayson, Wolry Wolfe and Eric Vernon could take control of the middle of the park, while James Thomas and Navion Boyd could assume duties up front. The match forms part of the 318 years of foundation of the city of Sao Jose dos Pinhais, and initial estimates suggest that "a big crowd" is expected. Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) president, Captain Horace Burrell, arrived in Brazil on Thursday on the special invitation of the Mayor of Curitiba, Leopoldo Meyer. Burrell will be a special guest for at the game and as part of the itinerary, he had a tour of the city with the mayor. JFF general secretary, Horace Reid, and technical committee chairman, Howard McIntosh, arrived in Brazil on Wednesday. The game is the Boyz's last before departing for home tomorrow. They have already played six - winning three, drawing two and losing one.

Artistes say 'no' to abortion

March 14, 2008
Started By Crazypickney1 Comments
he issue of abortion has always been a profound and disturbing issue for most local entertainers. It is deep because it deals with a topical issue that is constantly being lashed out against in their usual selection of lyrics, and disturbing because it questions the possibility that the act of abortion could become legal in a society that is predominantly strong in the Christian faith.

"This is a touchy topic to deal with," says local entertainer Queen Ifrica. "I do accept the fact that it is a personal choice, but outside of that, and based on what it entails abortion is wrong," the singer said.

She told The STAR that while there might be circumstances where some would argue that the act is justified, it is still the cancellation of a life. "It therefore cannot be a good move to legalise abortion in Jamaica," she said. "This move will make it too much of easy access, which would only encourage 'mistakes'; be it consciously or subconsciously."

Not the solution

"Yes over-population is an issue in Jamaica, but legalising abortion is no justification for this social issue, it is not the solution, it is a way for the Government to brush a big problem under the carpet without really thinking of the consequences," she said.

MC Nuffy agrees that legalising abortion is not the best way forward. He told The STAR that projected financial difficulties in bringing up their children is not enough reason for women to resort to abortion, using contraceptive as a preventative method and that it is education that should be encouraged.

In support of his argument, Queen Ifrica says, "The education that is needed should be led by a scare strategy, females need to be educated about the real implications on their bodies when they accept abortion as an option. Precaution should be the key focus, not stopping a process that we understand nothing about, a shock exhibition is needed, especially for the youth in our schools.

"As artistes we need to extend more consideration in our lyrics because ignorance of an individual's circumstance should not be celebrated. It is irresponsible for us to exploit in lyrics what some people have gone through, often said in the wrong context. This can be like mixing poison with medicine," said Ifrica.

No authority

Elephant Man, who has in the past vocalised lyrics against abortion, told The STAR, "Dem thing deh must never become legal in Jamaica; life was given to us by the almighty and we do not have the authority to take that away.

"We don't even know whose life we are taking, it could be the next prime minister," he said. Taking responsibility for his own lyrics, Ele said everyone will speak their minds in different ways.

"I said 'gyal from yuh never kill nuh pickney from yuh born yet' others will maybe say it with more tact," Ele said. But even in the case of pregnancy as a result of rape, he is still adamant that he would say no to abortion, "The seed is always innocent," he told The STAR.

Jamaican dancehall deejay Jeffrey Assassin Campbell has been rampaging the dance halls of the Western world. In March, he has already done quite a few performances and has a very important one, coming up on Saturday, March 22.

Assassin1.jpgIm heading to Tobago, and even though Ive been in the business for five years and Ive had hit songs over there, its going to be my first time performing in Trinidad and Tobago, Assassin stated excitedly. But one advantage I have of making a good and lasting first impression is that Ive now been doing this for five years so Im closer to perfecting my craft.

Assassins appearance at Magnums Follow Di Arrow on Saturday, March 1, has left many talking of his superb performance. The artiste is pleased with this review as he has invested great time and energy into his performance skills and delivery. Ive spent time studying it (his craft) to improve it and I always want to make each performance better than my last, he said.

The following Monday, March 3, he headed to Negril to entertain a different audience at Jam Fest/Spring Break 2008. It was fun performing at Spring Break because it reminded me of performing in Europe. I have to bear in mind that our dialect isnt easy to understand so I had to slow it down a little so that they could hear what I was saying, Assassin said. He finished with a sly grin, And it is true that what happens at Spring Break stays at Spring Break.

Texas had the opportunity of seeing Assassin live and direct on Friday, March 7, as he unleashed hit after hit after hit. He described the experience as ahhh murder! as its been awhile since he has performed there. Well, Texas hasnt seen me in three years; its just a part of the world that we dont visit often. So from start to finish they were with me cause Ive had quite a few hit songs since then, Assassin pointed out.

Assassins next performance will be on Saturday, March 22 and will see him making his debut appearance in the twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago. He will be joined by fellow cohorts Richie Spice and Gyptian, and theyll c****ine their talents to rock the soca massive with the delectable beats of Reggae and Dancehall.

TIJUANA, Mexico - The killers prowled through Loma Bonita in the pre-dawn chill.

In silence, they navigated a labyrinth of wood shacks at the crest of a dirt lane in the blighted Tijuana neighborhood, police say. They were looking for Margarito Saldańa, an easygoing 43-year-old district police commander. They found a house full of sleeping people.

Neighbors quivered at the crack of AK-47 assault rifles blasting inside Saldańa's tiny home. Rafael García, an unemployed laborer who lives nearby, recalled thinking it was "a fireworks show," then sliding under his bed in fear.

In murdering not only Saldańa, but also his wife, Sandra, and their 12-year-old daughter, Valeria, the Loma Bonita killers violated a rarely broken rule of Mexico's drug cartel underworld: Family should remain free from harm. The slayings capped five harrowing hours during which the assassins methodically hunted down and murdered two other police officers and mistakenly killed a 3-year-old boy and his mother.

The brutality of what unfolded here in the overnight hours of Jan. 14 and early Jan. 15 is a grim hallmark of a crisis that has cast a pall over the United States' southern neighbor. Events in three border cities over the past three months illustrate the military and financial power of Mexico's cartels and the extent of their reach into a society shaken by fear.

More than 20,000 Mexican troops and federal police are engaged in a multi-front war with the private armies of rival drug lords, a conflict that is being waged most fiercely along the 2,000-mile length of the U.S.-Mexico border. The proximity of the violence has drawn in the Bush administration, which has proposed a $500 million annual aid package to help President Felipe Calderón c****at what a Government Accountability Office report estimates is Mexico's $23 billion a year drug trade.

A total of more than 4,800 Mexicans were slain in 2006 and 2007, making the murder rate in each of those years twice that of 2005. Law enforcement officials and journalists, politicians and peasants have been gunned down in the wave of violence, which includes mass executions, such as the killings of five people whose bodies were found on a ranch outside Tijuana this month.

Like the increasing number of Mexicans heading over the border in fear, the violence itself is spilling into the United States, where a Border Patrol agent was recently killed while trying to stop suspected traffickers.

Drawing on firepower, savage intimidation and cash, the cartels have come to control key parts of the border, securing smuggling routes for 90 percent of the cocaine flowing into the United States, according to the State Department. At the same time, Mexican soldiers roam streets in armored personnel carriers, attack helicopters patrol the skies, and boats ply the coastal waters.

"The situation is deteriorating," Victor Clark, a Tijuana human rights activist and drug expert, said in an interview. "Drug traffickers are waging a terror campaign. The security of the nation is at stake."

prt2.
More than 1,900 miles southeast of Tijuana, the city of Reynosa stretches along the across from south This is Gulf cartel country, a region dominated by the cartel's private army, Los Zetas. Their arsenal befits a military brigade, exceeding those of some Mexican army units.

Led by Heriberto Lazcano Lazcano, Los Zetas are a highly disciplined mercenary squad composed of former elite Mexican troops, including officers trained by the U.S. military before they deserted. The group has become an obsession of Calderón's administration, which has sent more than a thousand troops to Reynosa and neighboring cities.

Soldiers crowd the slender canal bridges that crisscross Reynosa, stopping drivers at random and staring across the cityscape with their fingers on the triggers of heavy weapons. The tense atmosphere has led to mistakes.

On Feb. 16, soldiers fatally shot Sergio Meza Varela, a 28-year-old with no apparent ties to the drug trade, when the car he was riding in didn't stop at a checkpoint. "You're scared to leave your house," Alejandra Salinas, Meza's cousin, said in an interview outside the family tire shop. "We're just in the way."

In Tijuana, Ciudad Juarez and Nuevo Laredo, the growing Sinaloa cartel is fighting rivals over smuggling routes. But in Reynosa, police say, only Mexican soldiers threaten the Gulf cartel's control.

To prepare for battle, Los Zetas have stocked safe houses with antitank weapons, assault rifles, grenades and other heavy weapons, including some that Mexican law enforcement authorities believe once belonged to the U.S. Army.

"How can I fight them?" said Juan Jose Muńoz Salinas, Reynosa's police chief. "It's impossible."

On Feb. 7, soldiers stormed the dusty "El Mezquito" ranch outside Miguel Aleman, west of Reynosa, and found one of the largest illegal arsenals in recent memory: 89 assault rifles, 83,355 rounds of ammunition, and plastic explosives capable of demolishing buildings. Two days later in nearby Nuevo Laredo, soldiers found a weapons cache that included eight military uniforms to be used as disguises.

The mounting evidence that cartels have infiltrated many border police forces has prompted drastic action.

In Reynosa, soldiers disarmed the entire police force in January, leaving them without weapons for 19 days while ballistics tests were conducted. Police officers, who make $625 a month, were also forced to provide voice samples for comparison with recordings of threats made over police radios, Mayor Oscar Luebbert Gutiérrez said in an interview.

"It wasn't worth it," said Muńiz Salinas, the police chief. "They come after us, but it's other authorities that are really involved. Look at the state police, the federal police and the military."

prt.3
It was New Year's Day in Tijuana, the hilly city at America's busiest border crossing. City workers prepped for celebrations, but Jesus Alberto Rodriguez Meraz and Saul Ovalle Guerrero, both veteran police officers, had other plans.

They were going to get rich.

The officers stole one ton of marijuana from the Arellano Felix drug cartel. But before they could sell the load they were kidnapped. Four days later their bodies were found, Tijuana's new police chief, JesÂżs Alberto Capella, said in an interview.

The killings barely registered in Mexico, numbed by an avalanche of at least 30 police officer murders in the past three months and dozens more in the past year. Their case illuminates the pervasive police corruption created by drug money.

One of every two police officers murdered in Mexico today is directly involved with drug gangs, according to estimates by police officials, prosecutors and drug experts.

Capella, nicknamed "Tijuana Rambo" because he fought his way out of an assassination attempt shortly before taking office, estimates that 15 percent of the city's 2,300 police officers work for drug cartels, earning a monthly stipend as body guards, kidnappers or assassins. In Baja California alone, Mexican justice officials estimate that 30 percent of the local and federal police force is on a cartel payroll.

"We have the enemy in our house," Capella said.

The killings in Loma Bonita here were related to a police corruption case, Capella and other police officials said. A few days earlier, Tijuana police had killed an officer working as a bodyguard for a drug gang that tried to rob an armored car.

Cartel assassins, using police radios, vowed revenge. Within a week, Saldańa, his family, and two other officers had been murdered.

Some of the killings have come with specific messages taunting Mexican author ities.

During one week in mid-February, six bodies were found with signs lashed to them that included information such as the phone number and address of the Mexican army office set up to receive tips about organized crime. According to analysts, such "narco-messages," some of which are carved into the bodies, are intended to keep residents from reporting tips.

The decline of the Arellano FÂżlix cartel's dominance of Tijuana has had the unexpected effect of deepening police corruption.

After one brother was assassinated and two others were arrested, a war erupted because the cartel's new leadership -- including a sister, Enedina -- refused to share territory with the Sinaloa cartel, a police official said on condition of anonymity. Once loyal to the Arellano FÂżlix cartel, some police officers switched sides.

"The police became armed wings of the warring cartels," the police official said.

At the same time, tighter border enforcement following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks has made it harder for cartels to smuggle drugs into the United States. So the cartels developed a local market by giving out free samples of drugs, according to Clark, the Tijuana-based drug expert and human rights activist.

The estimated number of addicts in Tijuana doubled from 100,000 in 2004 to 200,000 in 2007, Clark said. The number of small stores or houses where drugs are sold increased fivefold -- to 20,000 outlets -- over that time. Each outlet pays protection money to police, so their proliferation meant more payoffs.

In response, authorities in Baja California and several other border states have begun giving police lie-detector tests. The questions range from the innocuous to queries such as "Have you ever worked with a drug trafficker?"

Rommel Moreno Manjarrez, Baja California's attorney general, said in an interview that out of every 1,000 officers tested, 700 fail.

"It's impossible for the narco to succeed without the help of the police," he said. "The success that the narco has been having is because of the police."

prt.4
About 20 minutes south of Tijuana, high-rise condominiums line the coast near Rosarito Beach. Once a sleepy hideaway for

stars, the town had over time exploded into a gaudy party magnet, drawing tourists to the beach and the studio where the movies "Titanic" and "Master and Commander" were filmed.

Rosarito's further transformation has been propelled by drug money and culture, turning the surfer's haven into a key transshipment point for cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamines. City hall is now an armed encampment. Soldiers in armored personnel carriers guard the front entrance.

The new police chief, Jorge Eduardo Montero Alvarez, now occupies an office inside the cordon. His headquarters was rendered uninhabitable by a December attack.

Investigators believe Rosarito Beach police -- working on behalf of the drug gangs -- were behind the attack, which killed one of Montero Alvarez's bodyguards. Days later, Mexican soldiers disarmed the entire 149-officer Rosarito police force.

"I'm more afraid of the police than the narcos," said Jorge Luis Quińones, a Rosarito Beach physician and businessman, reflecting a feeling that has built for years among many of the surrounding area's 150,000 residents.

In June 2006, three Rosarito Beach police officers were beheaded. For Hugo Torres Chabert, scion of the wealthy family that founded the famed Rosarito Beach Hotel, it was a grim wakeup call.

Convinced that almost every level of the city's government had become tainted with drug money, Torres Chabert ran for mayor and won. Soon after taking office last December, he fired 80 of the city's 500 employees. But he says he hasn't been able to press for arrests for lack of evidence.

'Corrupt, but not stupid'
"They were corrupt, but not stupid," he said.

To the children of Rosarito Beach, narco gunmen had already became local heroes because they drove the fanciest cars, wore the latest styles and acted like they owned the town. "Black commandos," the drug cartel hit men, began openly flashing their weapons, snorting cocaine and strutting through the beach town.

"It became impossible to avoid drug dealers -- your kids go to school with their kids," Aurelio Castańeda, a Rosarito Beach bar owner and merchants association official, said in an interview. "You'd go to a bathroom in a bar, and they'd be selling cocaine. They don't even try to hide it, and there was nothing you could do about it, nobody you could turn to."

CastaÂżeda's once-busy bar, El Torito, is often empty. He says his business is down 80 percent since 2001, when Rosarito Beach's drug violence spiked, scaring off most surfers and other tourists.

Beyond the flash of the bars and hotels, Rosarito Beach is a warren of impoverished neighborhoods where developers, after paying off city officials, did not bother to install water lines or electrical connections. The dismal living conditions created fertile recruiting grounds for drug traffickers, who have found many willing to "mule" their product across the border for $500 a trip.

But great quantities of drugs stay in Rosarito and are sold at hundreds of convenience stores or private homes that thrive under police protection. Not long ago, a Baja California journalist began digging into the problem. The cartels found out and, in a series of phone calls, threatened to kill him.

It wasn't the first time. He'd had enough. Terrified, the journalist left the business.

"I was saying to myself, 'This is an important subject,' " the journalist said on condition of anonymity, fearing for his safety. "But I wasn't willing to lose my life over it."

Clarendon College made one more step in their journey to become the next winners of Television Jamaica's Schools' Challenge Quiz when they defeated St Catherine High to advance to the quarter-finals. The final score was 28-25.

It was not a lack of effort that cost the St Catherine team the win, however, as they made a very commendable comeback in the third round. But despite their valiant attempt, it was not enough to snatch victory from the determined Clarendon team.

Section one of the match was very keenly contested, with both teams being able to handle the questions well. This part of the match ended with Clarendon on seven points and their opponents on six.

The second section of the match was where Clarendon really began to show their dominance. St Catherine, on the other hand, struggled in this section and this was essentially where they lost the match. Clarendon College earned 16 additional points in this section, while St Catherine only gained an additional seven. The scores at this time were Clarendon with 22, St Catherine,15.

Though it seemed like the St Catherine team was clearly on the brink of defeat, they managed to redeem themselves in the final round, actually catching up to their opponents. Their performance in this section was very impressive, but just not enough to take victory.

good performance

Coach of the Clarendon team, Kevin Ellis, said his team gave a very good performance. He said, "They made a few mistakes in the buzzer section and that put us on the edge. I liked the fact that they didn't panic when the scores got close. They held their composure."

Winston Henry, coach of the St Catherine team, told THE STAR, "I am very disappointed in this loss. We could have won. We are beaten, but not disgraced, and we can hold our heads high. Now, it's back to the drawing board for next year. But it was a well-played match."

The Clarendon College Team: Aldean Ellis, Kedon Clarke, André Green, Reneal Allen.

The St Catherine Team: Jermaine Smith, Alton Hussey, Otis Wright, Andrew McKenzie.

A 17-year-old girl who was wanted by law enforcement officials in the United States since April 2007 was on Wednesday held by members of the Fugitive Apprehension Team in Lititz district, Watson Hill, St Elizabeth.

The student of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is wanted by the Supreme Court of Cobb County in the state of Georgia for murder and attempted robbery. She will also be facing charges locally for breaches of the Immigration Act.

The Constabulary Communication Network's metro officer reported that at about 10:30 a.m., members of the Fugitive Apprehension Team carried out an operation in the Watson Hill area, during which the student was nabbed.

Attempted robbery

It is alleged that on April 21, 2007, the student was involved in an attempted robbery in Smyrra Cobb. A man was allegedly shot and killed during the incident. She fled to Jamaica shortly after where she had been hiding before her apprehension.

Three persons have been picked up by the Fugitive Apprehension Team since the start of the year. Nine were nabbed last year.

Dear Pastor,

I am seeing a guy who is more than twice my age. He lives with his girlfriend of 10 years. He hardly ever calls or shows that he cares. When we have sex, I have an orgasm, but he hardly ever kisses me or engages in foreplay. The problem is I am afraid of leaving him because I have already slept with numerous men and I am afraid to move on. I really like him, but I am afraid to ask him where I stand.

Please help me Pastor.
