MORE AND and more Jamaican motorists are driving less as they struggle to deal with rising gas prices.

A Gleaner-commissioned Bill Johnson poll found that more than six out of every 10 Jamaicans have decided to cut down on their driving because of increasing prices.

That is consistent with what is happening in the United States where a recent USA TODAY/Gallup poll found that seven out of 10 Americans are c****ining trips and taking other steps to reduce driving.

Driving fewer miles

According to the Gallup poll, the average American motorist is driving substantially fewer miles for the first time in 26 years because of high gas prices and demographic shifts.

Back home, Johnson found that 65 per cent of motorists are driving less, 10 per cent are driving slower, while two in every 10 motorists are continuing as if there has been no change in gas prices.

The decision by motorists to reduce driving has already started to affect gas station operators, who are almost uniformly reporting a fall-off in gasolene sales. The Jamaica Gasolene Retailers Association (JGRA) says its members have reported a decline in volume sales of between 10 and 25 per cent.

However, an official of petroleum marketing company, Total Jamaica, on Friday said it had not seen a decline and, in fact, enjoyed an increase in sales last month.

But first vice-president of the JGRA, Trevor Barnes, says that is not the reality, and that the majority of its members are selling less gas.

"What is happening is that, if our customers usually buy $2,000 gas, they are still buying the same $2,000 as the prices go up," Barnes tells The Sunday Gleaner.

He accepts that there is nothing that gas station operators or any one else in Jamaica can do about the rising prices, and expresses concern about the impact the fall-off will have on operations.

Most motorists appear to share the position that the increase in gas prices is a worldwide phenomenon, with Jamaica sliding down a slippery slope.

Not much can be done

The Johnson poll, which was conducted on May 31 and June 1 across 84 communities islandwide, found that 76 per cent of Jamaicans accept there is not much the Bruce Golding administration can do about the prices, while 19 per cent claim the administration can do much more. The poll has an error margin of minus or plus three per cent.

However, the majority of those who say the adminis-tration can do much more are supporters of the Opposition People's National Party.

He gave the biggest forward to Rynos Mek Di Paper but the crowds biggest forwards were reserved for him and Mavado. When the selector played Nah Go Nowhere, the forwards were deafening, some patrons grabbing ashtrays and beating them on the bar counter, and when that immediately followed up by Broad Daylight, there was a cacophony of noise consisting of shouted forwards, finger gun salutes and banging on the bar counter. Mavados Nuh Bleach a Night, and On the Rock, and Killas Nuh Friend Fish also got big forwards, and Killer had a big grin on his face when these songs played. Kartel, for his part, danced to all the Mavado songs, and chatted with DAngel, mugged for shots with adoring female fans. And it was all incident free. Wonder how the Killer feel about these two hanging out together? He cannot be pleased. A man, his wife and his girlfriend, who all reside at the same home, were arrested recently and slapped with multiple sex-related charges. The man was charged after he was accused of having sexual relations with his girlfriend's 15-year-old sister, who also lives at the house. Both the wife and the teen's sister are said to have knowledge of the offence. Charged with three counts of carnal abuse and one count of harbouring a juvenile is a 35-year-old construction worker of a St Catherine address. His wife, 26, and girlfriend, 28, were charged with three counts of aiding and abetting carnal abuse. The three accused appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's court last week, where the man and his wife were remanded, while the girlfriend was granted $50,000 bail. They are to return to court today. According to the allegations, some time in May the man reportedly moved his girlfriend into the house where he and his wife and children live. Further reports are that the girlfriend then moved in her 15-year-old sister, after which he allegedly moved his wife and children to another section of the house. It is alleged that the accused then became sexually involved with the teenager much to the knowledge of his wife and girlfriend. It was also reported that the actions of the accused angered residents within his community, who subsequently made several complaints to the police. A police team then reportedly visited the home on June 2, and they caught the man and the teenager in what they described as a compromising position. The teen fled the house naked and has not been seen since. The man, his wife and the girlfriend were subsequently arrested and charged.

A bitter family dispute in Montego Bay, St. James on Monday night turned tragic with a brother and sister dead, one of their siblings battling for life and her common-law husband in hospital. What started out as a quarrel between two sisters in the volatile community of Bottom Pen erupted into a shooting and machete chopping incident shortly after 7o'clock. The police have not yet released the names of the dead persons, one of whom was a food vendor at the Charles Gordon Market. It is reported that the deadly clash resulted from a long-standing dispute involving the children of the two sisters who both lived on the same property. Investigators are trying to ascertain the circumstances in which the four sustained their injuries. Commanding Officer for the St. James Police Superintendent Steve McGregor spoke with our news centre. "A really bitter family feud resulted in one sister being shot and killed, her brother being shot and killed, another sister in hospital suffering from machete wounds and her common-law husband is also in hospital with wounds occasioned by this feud," "It is kind of symptomatic of what is happening in the country in general were people are not finding more calm ways of settling disputes," he said. An illegal gun was recovered from the scene. The two persons in hospital are under police guard. It is reported that prior to Monday night's incident the police had gone to the premises on several occasions to part fights involving the sisters.

Tragedy struck at the Vineyard Town Golden Age Home, Kingston, yesterday when one resident was stabbed to death during a dispute that developed with another resident over a haircut. The deceased man, 56-year-old Michael Feanny, was a barber at the home. The other man, said to be in his mid 30s, is currently in police custody. Up to late last night, he was not charged. Reports reaching THE STAR are that about 10:45 a.m., both men had a dispute at the home over a haircut. The dispute between both parties reportedly got physical and a knife was drawn. Feanny was stabbed in his neck. He was rushed to the nearby St Joseph's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. When THE STAR visited the Vineyard Town Golden Age Home yesterday, staff members were mum about the details surrounding the incident. They pointed to a written directive left by the administrator that all media queries should be sent to the Minister with responsibility for Local Government.

NEW YORK (AP) Don Imus has once again injected race into his radio show. During an on-air conversation Monday about the arrests of suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones, Imus asked, "What color is he?"

Told by sports announcer Warner Wolf that Jones is "African-American," Imus responded: "There you go. Now we know."

Civil rights leader Al Sharpton issued a statement calling the exchange disturbing "because it plays into stereotypes." He says his National Action Network was still deciding how to respond.

Imus was fired from his previous show last year after he made a racially charged comment about the Rutgers women's basketball team.

Representatives for Imus and WABC Radio haven't returned calls.

Despite his ongoing battle with myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cell which is an important part of the immune system that produces antibodies to help fight infection and disease, veteran singer Alton Ellis is still set on rocking as many stage shows as he can. Ellis is currently in the island making preparations to perform at the 'Get Ready To Rock Steady' show tomorrow at the National Indoor Sports Centre. Myeloma Speaking at a press conference at the Norman Manley International Airport yesterday, Ellis explained that he had myeloma, which is a tumour of plasma cells, arising in bone marrow, and often occurring at multiple sites, as in the vertebrae and flat skull bones. He, however, said he was now feeling much better than in recent months. "I am not bad at all. Friday the doctor stopped chemo (therapy) 'cause the disease is low. They are just observing my condition," said Ellis who now resides in the United Kingdom. Expensive Ellis, also said he was, "badly in need of money," as he noted that the treatment for his cancer was expensive. He said he did five shows in the United Kingdom last year when he was getting better, but got sick again. However, he says he will be doing his best when he performs at the concert tomorrow. "I am a ready man but I just get tired easily. At one time I was like this so you see that my illness is not so bad anymore," Ellis told The Star. The 'Get Ready to Rock Steady' concert will be filmed as part of a documentary of the same name. Other artistes set to perform on the show include, Leroy Sibbles, Dawn Penn, Ken Boothe, Judy Mowatt, Lloyd Parkes and We The People, Derrick Morgan and The Tamlins. The documentary, which is being produced by Swiss and French companies in collaboration with the Jamaican Government, will show how rock steady has impacted on other genres of music in Jamaica.

It's been 21 years since Ninja Man has touched Canadian soil, but this past weekend put that two decades absence to an end as Ninja Man, escorted by his wife, held a press conference at York University promoting the One Umbrella Movement founded by the Don Gorgon himself.

 "The press conference is being held to let the people know that after 21 years, Ninja Man is able to travel to Canada and also to spread awareness for the One Umbrella Movement" said Fabian 'Fabo' Hanson of Vibes Entertainment, who is responsible for obtaining Ninja Man's travel documents to Canada, as well as the United States.  Fabo, long time business man, promoter and immigration consultant, has been chosen by Ninja to head the Canadian chapter of the One Umbrella Movement.  The One Umbrella Movement was officially launched in Jamaica December, of 2007.

 

Dressed in all white, Ninja Man took his seat at the front of the conference centre, appearing relaxed, and focused on discussing the One Umbrella Movement and its' organization, which promotes non-violence, especially amongst the youth.

 

"There is no one better than me to head this movement.  Bounty can't do it; Beenie Man can't do it.  Only a man like me who has lived the life I've lived can be a role model to these youths, and telling them that if they go the path of drugs, they will end up like this, or if they take up a gun, they will end up like that.  I've been down that road, which everyone knows, and it's time for me to take up this cause to save the youths from a life that's not good.  I know; I've been there as everybody knows.  The only two other man who could do this is Josie Whales, or Super Cat.  We know that violence will never be eliminated, but we can at least bring violence down, and I am going to do it"!  So said Ninja Man when asked how his life's experience has prepared him for this role.

 

One of the mandates of the One Umbrella Movement is to have chapters in most Reggae consuming countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America and throughout the Caribbean.  Focus will be placed on giving youths resources they so badly need to take their minds away from violence, and focus on prosperity.  As an initial offering, young entertainers will be given a sound system to hold their own dance in their local community.  Also, there are talks of installing a car wash, and educating youths on business management. 

 

Ninja Man welcomes participation from community leaders and non-leaders as the movement feels that everyone plays an important role.  "A leader may be in a position to donate things we need, which is good.  A non leader might only be able to negotiate peace between two youths warring; we still need him too".  Ninja made it clear that he is the overall head of the organization, including chapters in other countries as he seriously joked with conference attendees when saying "Ah me run dih program no matta which part ah dih world me ah deal wid.  Dem haffi do weh me tell dem fih do"!

 

Based on the reception by the Toronto Reggae / Dancehall community, it appears more than likely that Ninja and the One Umbrella Movement will get all the support needed to be successful.  Ninja Man, in association with Vibes Entertainment, will hold a concert on August 15th, 2008 in Toronto at The Kool Haus 132 Queen Quay East.

After seven and a half hours of deliberation over the course of less than two days, the jury in R. Kelly's child-pornography trial reached a decision: not guilty on all counts.

"Robert said all along that he believed in our system and he believed in God and that when all the facts came out in court, he would be cleared of these terrible charges," Kelly spokesman Allan Mayer said afterward. "But he never dreamed it would take six and a half years. This has been a terrible ordeal for him and his family, and at this point, all he wants to do is move forward and put it behind him.

"He wants to thank his lawyers for their brilliant defense, his fans for supporting him with so much love, and most of all God for giving him the strength to get through this. He will have more to say about what he's been through in a little while, but right now he needs a little time to recover from all this and be with his family."

Before the verdict was read at 2 p.m. CT, Judge Vincent Gaughan warned the court, "I don't want any outbursts," saying anyone who did disrupt the reading would be held in direct contempt of court and go to jail immediately.

While listening to the verdict, R. Kelly cried softly as his lawyers held his hands and he shuddered with a sigh of relief. Kelly then slapped his attorney Sam Adam Jr. on the back and gave him a bear hug. As he hugged attorney Ed Genson, he rested his head on his shoulder and cried. Kelly supporters in the court gallery, including his business manager, also shed tears. 

Early verdicts are usually considered better for the prosecution than the defense, but this was the exception. Kelly was indicted just over six years ago for videotaping himself engaged in sexual acts with a then-underage girl, his goddaughter. A copy of a videotape was delivered to the Chicago Sun-Times in February 2002, which reporter Jim DeRogatis then handed over to the police. Kelly denied he was the man on the tape, claiming it must be a forgery.

The jury didn't necessarily agree. After the trial was over, jurors spoke to the press about their decision, explaining that though they thought Kelly was on the tape, they were unsure of the girl's identity.

"We were uncertain as to the female, and the absence of her was a major lack in the case," juror #23 said.

Kelly's attorneys apparently raised doubt among the jurors about the motives of the witnesses who came forward to identify the people on the tape, including the girl's aunt Stephanie "Sparkle" Edwards, whom the singer's lawyers described as bitter over a bad business deal with the singer, and former Kelly mistress Lisa Van Allen, whom defense attorneys accused of attempting to extort $300,000 from them in order not to testify.

Van Allen's testimony was especially scrutinized by the jury, who, on the first day of deliberations, asked for a complete transcript of what she said under direct and cross-examination.

For the last six years, Kelly's movements have been monitored by the court any time he wanted to tour, shoot a music video or attend an awards show outside the jurisdiction, he had to seek permission and check in with a probation officer daily while out of town. On top of that, he was required to attend nearly every hearing held in this case. Kelly faced up to 15 years of prison and a fine of up to $100,000.

More than two years after a gunbattle on Seymour Avenue killed one member of an Atlanta rappers entourage and injured three others, two local brothers have been arrested and indicted for murder.

Details have finally emerged that patrons at an after-hours party became enraged with rapper Clifford Harris who goes by the stage name T.I. and his entourage, and that rage quickly escalated and erupted into violence.

Hosea Thomas, 34, of North College Hill, and Padron Thomas, 40, of East Price Hill, have been charged with murder and felonious assault for the death of Harris assistant and childhood friend, Philant Johnson, 26, and the wounding of three others in the entourage.

Harris, a Grammy Award winner, was in town on May 3, 2006 to perform at Bogarts in Corryville. The Thomas brothers were patrons at the rappers after-hours party at Club Ritz in Roselawn.

The gunbattle, said Cincinnati Homicide Detective Tim Gormly, erupted after a series of altercations that night between the alleged shooters and Harris entourage.

T.I. and his group were in the VIP area, Gormly said. The suspects wanted to get in the VIP area and werent allowed to. At one point, he said, one of the brothers was struck in the head with a bottle.

Shortly after the shooting, several witnesses told The Enquirer that anger also flared when some of those in the rappers entourage threw money from the stage. That event may have helped fuel the fire, Gormly said.

It was just a total accumulation of everything that happened that night, he said.

When Harris and his entourage left in two vans, they were followed by two SUVs. It wasnt long before gunfire was exchanged from the moving vehicles on Seymour near I-75, killing Johnson and wounding the others. T.I. was slightly injured by flying glass.

Hosea Thomas, who has a criminal history that includes drug possession and trafficking convictions, was arrested in the 6900 block of Montgomery Road in Silverton and was booked into the Hamilton County Jail Wednesday morning without bond.

Padron Thomas, a listed sex offender, was previously convicted of robbery and rape. He is in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service for an unrelated drug case.

The Thomas brothers were each charged with murder and seven counts of felonious assault one for each person inside the rappers vehicles. Hosea Thomas was also charged with having weapons despite a previous conviction and Padron Thomas was also charged with tampering with evidence.

Solving the case wasnt easy, Gormly said. We had trouble identifying the suspects due to (the shooting) happening in a moving car and there werent a whole lot of witnesses that saw the actual shooting.

Eventually, little by little, the pieces came together, Gormly said, but even when detectives identified the Thomas brothers, months went by before there was sufficient evidence to charge them.

Since the shooting, Johnsons family has called frequently looking for answers, Gormly said. Wednesday night, he finally had news that may bring closure to his mourning mother.

A family that keeps in touch over two years you know they really care for Philant, Gormly said. So yeah, it feels good to give them the news.

Huge shocker -- crack, cigarette and who-knows-what-else smoking trainwreck Amy Winehouse has a lung disease.

Winey's father, Mitch, spilled the beans on her hospitalization, admitting the 24-year-old has contracted emphysema -- the same disease Johnny Carson died from when he 79.

Mitch told the Daily Mail, "With smoking crack cocaine and the cigarettes her lungs are all gunked up ... She's got 70 per cent lung capacity."

Amy has been in the hospital since collapsing in her London home last week.














As Amy Winehouse remains hospitalized, the embattled singer's condition may have taken a turn for the worse, as it's being reported that the 24 year-old has a case of tuberculosis.

According to British newspaper The Sun, sources from a London hospital say, doctors now believe Winehouse has tuberculosis and are performing more tests to be certain.

The troubled crooner is suffering a chest infection and has been having severe coughing fits and hurling up *lo**. Despite her refusal to be examined, doctors are trying to control her irregular heartbeat.

As SOHH previously reported, after being rushed to the hospital earlier this week following a fainting spell, which could have been caused by a massive overdose she suffered last year, Winehouse received a dire warning from her doctor to quit using drugs or eventually her addiction will cost the British soul singer her life.

Winehouse's battle with drugs and alcohol coupled with her massive weight loss, have doctors concerned as well.

Are our parents losing the love for their children? How can you as a parent see your child needing your help and yet neglect them? Children need constant love and emotional support from parents. If they are not receiving this support, they will seek it elsewhere, and get mixed up with the wrong company, then you call them worthless!

Another thing that puzzles me is that parents find it necessary to call their children insulting names such as, "jancrow, dutty gal, idiot and dunce", just to name a few. Let me ask you all this, when children hear their parents referring to them by these abusive names won't they think that's what they really are? If everyday you call your child 'dunce' won't the child actually feel that he/she is indeed a 'dunce'? So don't get mad when his/her grades reflects this mentality. If you see that your child is regressing academically or hanging out with the wrong group of friends, remember it is your fault!

A controversial project to translate the Bible from English to Jamaican patois will cost $60 million and take 12 years to complete, the organisers of the project said.Stewart said the Bible Society had already translated some 40 per cent of the New Testament into Jamaican patois, and a portion of that translation, the Gospel of Luke, was now being reviewed by language specialists at the University of the West Indies Language Unit.

I know, teeth in the vagina is an old joke - and I never thought I'd be reading something like this on my show. This piece goes back to an article I did some time ago about a gynecologist who reported that he actually saw some teeth in a vagina.

Can you imagine? Day in and day out, nothing but pap smears, and then one day you put in the speculum and there are some choppers staring back at you!

Well, that woman had a dermoid cyst. Dermoid cysts are derived from the outer layers of embryonic skin, and they are capable of growing hair and teeth and bones, anything that comes from the outer layers of the embryo. They can occur anywhere.

So this woman had one in the pelvic region and the cyst grew teeth, and when it ruptured through the wall where her uterus joins her vagina - there were the teeth. In my practice once, I saw one in the eyelid.

Well, someone sent me their aunt's thesis on vaginal teeth! I had no idea there was so much about vaginal teeth in folklore and literature - it blew me away. It has a name too, "vagina dentata!"

Apparently this vaginal teeth motif is in myths and stories and even jokes all over the world, showing up as a symbol of aggression in women, or of weapons that they can use to rape and kill men. In many of the stories, apparently the women marry the men who detoothed their vaginas and made them safe.

Here is one example from Koelari, Bastar State:

"There was a Rakshasa's daughter who had teeth in her vagina. She used to live mostly as a tigress and kept ten or twelve tigers with her. When she saw a man, she would turn into a pretty girl, seduce him, cut off his penis, eat it herself and give the rest of his body to her tigers.

It was a busy weekend, crazy events, crazy clubbing, Rich N Happy Satdaze, Sex N the City Saturday, the dance at Barbican, and Quad clubbing on Saturday night, so lets get right to it.

KARTEL AND KILLA BUCK UP AT QUAD
Clubbers at Quad got a rare treat when deejay Vybz Kartel dropped by on Saturday night with a 25-strong entourage in tow and at least one superstar friend, the beautiful Michelle DAngel Downer, and members of the Portmore Empire such as Sean Storm, Blak Ryno, Lisa Hype, Omeil, Doza Medicine and Vybz Rum business partner Corey Todd. Bounty Killer dropped by the club at about the same time and waited till Kartel was inside before he entered. When Kartel and DAngel finally went upstairs, the stars did not hail Bounty Killer but moved past him surrounded by a phalanx of security personnel. The deejay then partied up a storm, drinking Henny and dancing to all the latest tunes. He gave the biggest forward to Rynos Mek Di Paper but the crowds biggest forwards were reserved for him and Mavado. When the selector played Nah Go Nowhere, the forwards were deafening, some patrons grabbing ashtrays and beating them on the bar counter, and when that immediately followed up by Broad Daylight, there was a cacophony of noise consisting of shouted forwards, finger gun salutes and banging on the bar counter. Mavados Nuh Bleach a Night, and On the Rock, and Killas Nuh Friend Fish also got big forwards, and Killer had a big grin on his face when these songs played. Kartel, for his part, danced to all the Mavado songs, and chatted with DAngel, mugged for shots with adoring female fans. And it was all incident free. Wonder how the Killer feel about these two hanging out together? He cannot be pleased.
