A group of gunmen armed with high-powered weapons yesterday evening opened fire on the Spanish Town Police Station, engaging members of the constabulary force in a gun battle and sending commuters running for cover.
The gunmen, who are alleged to be members of the Clansman gang, attacked the station about 7 p.m., and for several minutes maintained sustained gunfire. Reports received by THE WEEKEND STAR are that an eight-year-old girl was shot during the attack.
It is said that after the police regained control, the men retreated towards the Dela Vega community.
"The gunman dem spray the cell area and the side of the station wid shots. Right now, we just a work fi defend it," a sergeant said when contacted by THE WEEKEND STAR.
When we visited the area, scores of commuters were seen running on the streets in the Old Capital, close to the station. Some of them were worried about how they would get to their destinations.
Gunshots were also heard near the Spanish Town Hospital and it was reported that there was also gunfire along St John's Road, Rivoli, Jones Avenue and other areas. Along March Pen Road, vendors ran leaving their goods behind and people were seen walking from Greendale to the town centre.
A number of commuters were seen stranded as taxi drivers withdrew their services. "Yeah man, a walk wi affi walk go home now, it really wicked as a doctor mi coming from," said one commuter, Michelle Galloway, when approached by THE WEEKEND STAR.
Commerce in the area was basically crippled by the outburst, as bars, shops, supermarkets, gas stations and restaurants shut their doors. A Jamaica Defence Force helicopter with searchlight was seen hovering over the area and members of the Jamaica Defence Force were out in their numbers up to press time last night.
A statement from the Police High Command last night said the unprovoked attacks on police at the station and those on mobile patrols nearby are clear indications of the extraordinary lengths to which criminals from the Clansman gang will go in order to perpetuate their criminal way of life.
The release further stated that, "The attack indicates the weapons that these criminals have at their disposal and their willingness to use these weapons against the security forces."
Despite the criminals' firepower, however, the release stated that the police will not cower in the face of these attacks and will respond appropriately and professionally.
Yesterday's attack is rumoured to have been a reprisal for the police killing of former Clansman member Don Topping recently.
Not all woo is created equal and not all of it is dangerous to the same extent. Homeopathy may be a waste of your hard earned money but the only way it can harm you is if you take it instead of real medicine for a serious condition, and even homeopaths will often say that you should use proper medication along with their potions and sugar pills, you know, to cover their tails if the authorities start asking questions. Curses and hexes wont exactly put anyone in harms way all by themselves, and fluffy New Age woo about biocentrism only results in scientific illiteracy and sounding as if one is regurgitating pseudoscientific buzzword salad. But when it comes to bad ideas that do carry some serious danger with them, conspiracy theories have to be way up there on the list. Why? Their most fervent followers arent just a nuisance online, but they also run the risk of losing plenty of money to those who prey on their paranoia and fuel people with a really frail relationship with our world to do bizarre and even heinous things while undermining global peace and stability on all too many occasions.
Lets get one important thing out of the way right now. There are very real conspiracies in our world and theres always some sort of deal going on in a backroom because someone wants to make money on unrest or use some political dilemma in developing nations to grab valuable resources from a corrupt regime. This is how many of the worlds shadier characters make a living, characters like arms dealers and mob bosses, as well as naively optimistic conglomerates which think they can simply jam into a potential new market to make an easy buck if they just pay off the right people without realizing that theyll be bled dry by the end. However, just because shady characters are trying to divvy up the world into their fiefdoms with very mixed success, proof of some elite international cabal running the world for centuries and orchestrating every election, war, and crisis doesnt get any better. So while adherents of New World Order conspiracy theories drum on the evidence from real secret deals and conversations and say that since we have proof of real conspiracies around the world it would be naive not to believe their pet theory, theyre still wrong. If anything, the past few years have shown the exact opposite of what they claim. None of the worlds leaders can seem to agree on much of anything and in the supposed era of multinational interests and global cooperation, the only thing most nations worry about is their own pocketbooks and across the world, nationalist and isolationist trends are on the rise.
With the Great Recession, the world had a taste of what globalization and multilateral economic connections can entail on the other end of the economic scale and it seems that quite a few decided theyd rather bow out and go home. The same attitude seems to pervade the American Tea Party, and to some extent, they have a point about globalization as its played out now: that some of its biggest benefactors cheat and no one really seems to be able to bring them back in line. Remember that the global agencies powerless to put an end to Chinese currency manipulation are supposedly able to bend entire continents to their whims. Well, they dont want to bring anyone back in line because this serves their goal, conspiracy theorists reply. But why would an immensely powerful cabal want to make people miserable when it could just keep them content and give the world enough slack to plod along while they do all their scheming in the background? Why saddle the planet with huge financial crises rather than slowly devalue the same assets over time and snap them up later? All a global economic blowout does is raise peoples suspicion and ire. If todays supposedly infinitely wise cabals of rulers and bankers is even trying to control public opinion, theyre doing a horrible job. Any New World Order worth its salt would do far more on the public relations front end and keep the populace quiet and comfortable while it unfolds its plots over a longer period of time with better and less noticeable results.
Todays events seem like a pretty clear indication that the world isnt ruled by a single nefarious group, but by short-sighted disarray that has nations jokey for position in countless competitions for leverage and money. It really is a lot less dignified and organized than a single organization with global pull, the kind weaved from a collection of disparate quotes, tales, and events, then used as a coping mechanism with the words natural state of anarchy, especially now, during a major realigning of the worlds politics after the Cold War has faded from many nations memories and in the wake of the United States mounting national debts. But tumultuous times are often met with conspiracy theories to somehow give meaning to bad ideas or meaningless events. One popular conspiracy theory in South Korea says that the Cheonean, the South Korean warship sunk by an attack from North Korea, was actually destroyed by friendly fire from the American Navy and covered up by the nations militant administration. Conspiracy theories in the Arab world have people looking for nefarious plots by the Mossad in everything from tagged vultures to sharks near a beach. And in the United States, decades and decades of political discourse were dominated by conspiracy theories that rage to this day. In fact, the more fanatical Tea Party and libertarian rallies are warning their attendants of a looming crackdown by an evil government and urging them to stockpile gold, survival gear, and weapons.
And again, none of this is new. Its an old American tradition when we get right down to it, and its how people sometimes channel their feelings of being trapped in a situation form which theres no escape. They build an enemy for themselves (the government or the alien/Mason/Illuminati/banker cabal) and come up with a rather important purpose (surviving the coming crackdown by the evil enemy) to feel like theyre actually working for a noble goal and trying to prevent their enemys sinister schemes. And its all harmless fun until someone who has a very deep-seeded need to really do something to make a statement decides to turn this resistance and angry rhetoric into violent action or decides to mix it with religion or pseudoscience and create groups we fear because of their propensity for both advocating and carrying out violence. Ironically, however, because we find ourselves demanding that our government protects us from secretive and violent groups, we might well be fueling even more conspiracy theorists and even more mentally unstable or violent people going off to join an ever growing variety of groups based around conspiracy theories gone too far
KING: History has shown that acting is the likeliest transition for rappers. Considering your background, do you want to dabble in Hollywood?
NICKI MINAJ: Of course.
What would be your dream role?
Id like to play someone in a Tim Burton movie, where I get dressed up and painted and crazy.
You kind of do that now.
Then I want to be able to do some action stuff, like Angelina Jolie.
Like in Salt?
Yes! And then Id like to just play a regular girl who, you know, is facing the world. Something really sentimental and organic, that girls all around the world can identify with. You know, how Jada Pinkett Smith did in Jasons Lyric.
Classic film. You did mention earlier how everything has been time consuming. But when that time frees up, what kind of guy do you look for to be sentimental and organic with?
Um, I look for someone who is calm, someone who is strong enough to not have to win every argument, someone who allows a woman to be her crazy self and someone with a conscience not to feel less of a man. You know, someone who is able to honor his woman but also bring out the freak in his woman.
How should your Ken bring out the freak in you, Barbie?
Just being super aggressive when the time is right.
Are we talking about Mortal Kombatstyle Come here aggression?
Just something that makes me feel like theyre in control, when we are behind closed doors.
A weaker woman wouldve thrown in the towel by nowand not in the dripping-wet way we like. Filled with more publicized lows than highs, Christina Milians career has been bumpier than Kardashians backside. After years of playing it safe on the Disney circuit, the Cuban beauty reinvented herself as a sexually liberated singer turned actress. But rather than receiving platinum plaques and starring in Oscar-nominated films, she got a cheating celebrity boyfriend (Nick Cannon) and a record label (Island Def Jam) that gave her the boot in 2006 due to poor sales.
But hold all calls, Dancing with the Stars producers. Determined to prove that shes more than just a gorgeously photogenic paparazzi subject, Milian, 27, is back with a two-part plan of attack. First, theres her new record deal with the digital titans over at MySpace Music. Secondly, shes beefing up her Hollywood résumé with a sexy costarring role alongside A-listers Jennifer Garner and Matthew McConaughey in this summers Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. Heres to hoping she plays McConaugheys nymphomaniac ex.
KING When Island Def Jam issued you the pink slip, it was the talk of the town. Howd that go down exactly?
CHRISTINA MILIAN It happened a week after my album [2006s So Amazin] came out, so I faked it for a while. A lot of people didnt know that I got dropped, but I was still promoting for myselfnot necessarily for them. It was a lot of stuff that I got taken off of because somebody was putting some bad energy out about me, so a lot of people separated themselves from me.
How tough was it to digest the humble pie?
When it all happened I was embar****ed. Then all these rumors went out which were so stupid. Everything from, She didnt take the [Rihanna] song S.O.S., to trying to blame stuff on my man [Dre, of production duo Cool & Dre]. He had nothing to do with anything; all he did was produce music. He didnt even become my man until after we were done with the album. They tried to use every excuse in the book to put me down, and it worked. It stopped a lot of things from happening for me at the moment.
Times like that must really separate the friends from the fakes.
You know who called me? Keyshia Cole and Ameriethey called me immediately when they heard about it. Theyre just really down chicks, and Janet [Jackson], too. I bumped into her at a club and talked to her for about an hour. She said, Dont stop doing what you do. Dont let them do this to you. That meant a lot to me. You rarely see girls go out of their way to do that.
Despite low sales, paparazzi shots of you bring more traffic to blogs than a Kanye West comment. Where do you think that endless love comes from?
I think Im personable and humble. I think a lot of people can see that. When you get to know me, Im just like any other girl. I like to smile, I like to have fun, I stay working and I keep in close touch with my fans.
Not to mention your seamless transition into womanhood. You went from Disney to Dip It Low. Well done.
I went from being the young girl who said, Id never do that, to the girl who said, Im growing up. I started dating a way older guy in a different place, and the next thing you know Im dipping it low [laughs]. And since then its more of a mature sexy, as opposed to me being like, Hey, Im developing my body. My mom always taught me to be comfortable with myself.
Thanks, Mom! Is that inner sexiness something only exposed onstage or does it come out behind closed doors, too?
I think I kind of let people see the person that I really am, but when it comes to my man, it can be a little different [laughs]. Thats that private-dancer side. We all got to have some secrets every now and then. Outfits can be cute, high heels are hot, and theres nothing like a giggle and a smile to go along with the fun [laughs].
Dre is one lucky son of a b!$%h. Is everything still love songworthy between the two of you?
Im still in my situation, but hes on the East Coast and Im on the West. For me, its about taking small steps, like pacing out my career, eventually living together and getting to know each other.
You really are all grown up. Youll be a wife with kids in no time.
I want to have two kids someday but not too soon, and Im not ready for marriage. I think that there are certain steps that need to happen before that. Some people can do it quick. I dont want to be like a lot of these other people in Hollywood who get so caught up in everything, and the next thing you know, they move on like its nothing. I value marriage way more than that.
No quick Hollywood marriages, eh? Very interesting. Theres actually a certain ex of yours who was still wildin out when you were together, and hes now wedded. Any thoughts on his overnight nuptials?
I didnt even think about that when I was talking just now. Im actually very happy for [Nick Cannon]. I think because of the age difference, its going to work out well for them, because she seems really happy [and] he brings a youthful energy. Hes a good person to be around.
Way to coast down the high road. Lets keep the sincerity alive here: You were ready to choke a b!$%h for cheating. Admit it.
Im so over being hurt. Back then people would ask me about it, and I would tell them my true feelings at the time. Now that Ive grown up, I really do forgive him. We were both young, and as a young guy, he surrounded himself with women with his TV shows and all that kind of stuff. Its part of a boys temptation, especially at that age, so I understand. Im definitely over it now, and Im happy for him.
Dear Pastor,
This is my first time writing to you. I met a 34-year-old man last year. He is broke but he is a sexy man. We have been seeing each other since the time we met but, he is not my man. My man and I are not 100 per cent because we both found out that we are HIV positive.
The man I met has a girlfriend and she found out about us and has been calling my phone. I told her I did not know her man and that it was the wrong number. My nosey neighbours told her I am seeing her man so she has started calling my phone again.
make their lives miserable
Pastor, she has sent me threats which have made me very angry, and so, I am going to make sure her man gets the full dose of the AIDS to pass on to her. I have what it takes to make their lives miserable. I have sex with this man many times. He knows that I have a man and now his woman is calling me a whore.
I am going to fix her business properly. And, every good-looking man, I have news for you. "A nuff a we a go down with AIDS". I am hurt. I am not going to stop having sex with this man. I don't care about his money! I have something to give him which he might already have, because we do so many things together.
AIDS Victim,
Dear AIDS Victim,
What do you hope to gain by passing this dreadful disease to others? You claim that this man's girlfriend has been calling and threatening you. She wants you to leave her man and you are very upset because you feel that she has no right calling you. Therefore, you are going to take revenge by continuing to have unprotected sex with this man, so that he will catch the disease and infect his girlfriend.
practising evil
How could you be so iniquitous? Aren't you afraid of the judgement of God? You should be looking to God for deliverance. Instead, you are practising evil and bringing damnation upon yourself. If you were a good woman, you would tell this new man and his girlfriend that you have HIV/AIDS and that they should seek medical attention. In fact, if you truly love this man, you wouldn't have had unprotected sex with him.
I am therefore begging you to change your attitude towards this man and his girlfriend. Inform them of your condition. Change your plan towards all men. Remember that each one of us has to stand before God and give an account for what we have done, whether good or evil. So you cannot escape God's wrath if you continue to practice evil. Now is the time to repent and turn to God. Do so before it's too late.
Pastor
There's been a renewed thrust by the Jamaica Government to have the criminal record of its first National Hero, Marcus Mosiah Garvey, expunged.
Garvey was convicted of mail fraud in the United States of America (USA) in 1923.
In a statement to the House of Representatives at Gordon House, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Olivia Grange said the conviction tarnished his reputation and slowed his global movement, although it did not diminish the impact of his message on black people, worldwide.
For his contributions to the upliftment of his race, Garvey was named a National Hero but, in the Court records, he is still a criminal, she noted.
Grange said she wholeheartedly agreed with those before her who sought to have his name cleared, and lamented their lack of success.
She pointed out that in 1983 then Prime Minister Edward Seaga had asked President Ronald Reagan to grant a full pardon to Garvey, to no avail.
Since then, other efforts have been made.
In 2004 the Jamaica National Heritage Trust, under the impetus of then board member Professor Verene Shepherd, initiated a project to obtain the transcripts of the trial that led to his conviction.
Minister Grange presented three sets of the transcripts to Prime Minister Bruce Golding; the Leader of the Opposition Portia Simpson-Miller; and the Speaker of the House Delroy Chuck.
In making these presentations, I hope that we will be able to breathe new life into the discussions and movement to have The Rt. Excellent Marcus Garveys name cleared in the annals of history, she said.
Several Opposition MPs, including Simpson-Miller, as well as Government members have supported Governments continued efforts to clear Garveys name.
A St. Louis high school student is getting an "A" from authorities after discovering a teacher's X-rated past.
Tera Myers, 38, was put on administrative leave at Parkway North High School this week after a student inquired about pornographic films Myers starred in during the 1990s.
The science teacher decided to leave the school "out of respect for her privacy and that of her family," Paul Tandy, spokesman for the school district told the Daily News. "She was concerned about the impact it would have in the building."
Officials didn't know about Myers' past, which included a suspension five years ago from a Paducah, Ky., school for her role in the adult films.
While in Kentucky, Myers taught under a different name, Tericka Dye.
In 2006, the former porn star spoke to several media outlets and even made an appearance on "Dr. Phil," arguing she deserved to get her job back and that she had made the biggest mistake of her life.
"Anybody who has been in my classroom could tell you how much I love teaching and how much I love these students, and that should be what matters more than anything in my past," she said in May 2006.
Myers, whose stage name is Rikki Andersin, said she made the movies when she was living in California, working as an exotic dancer to earn desperately needed cash.
Because Myers' role in the adult films wasn't illegal, her pornographic past didn't show up during a background check.
The teacher, who has been at the school for four years, will be paid through the end of the school year but will not be returning in the fall.
"We're surprised, very surprised," said Tandy. "At the same time we feel for her and her family. We do believe she has tried to move on with her life... Unfortunately, even though it happened 15 years ago, [the video] is still there."
Companionship is something we were built for; its a part of human nature. The longing to lock arms and exchange sweet smiles is not to be ignored. Finding love is important and we should keep ourselves open to possibilities.
However, we should not be so inviting that we appear desperate. Standards and politesse need always apply. No man wants a woman who is desperate. It is most attractive to seem desirable and confident. So, assume the correct position when hunting for men. When and with whom it is meant to be will happen. The key is remaining open and opportunistic. Here are a few tips for looking open to love without coming off as desperate:
Have you ever had moments of desperation in your search for love?
1) He Doesnt Make You Feel Good: Your partner should make you happy with his presence in your life more often than not. While even the best couples have bad days, fights and moments of discontent, you should genuinely appreciate and enjoy the man in your life. If the thought of your boo brings up feelings of ambivalence or neutrality, you might be dealing with the wrong fella.
2) He Actually Makes You Feel Bad: Its one thing to find a man unremarkable, but if the idea of your man turns you OFF, then you need a new man. And if this guy makes it his business to put you down or treat you cruelly in any other way, then you may be dealing with an abuser. Anyone who treats you with malcontent or disrespect has no place in your life. Let him go.
3) He Doesnt Treat You The Way You Wish To Be Treated: Speaking of how he does you when he does you how he doeseven if the treatment you get isnt necessarily bad, if it isnt what you want from a man, it might as well be. For example, if you like for a man to treat you as a total equal, you might not do well with the man who wants to spoil you like a princess. If you want a sensitive man who attends to even your most trivial worries, then the strong, silent and uncommunicative gent might not work for you. That doesnt mean that you should be above checking your expectations and questioning how reasonable they are, but you dont want to waste your time (or anyone elses) if they cant provide what you want from a partner.
4) Nobody Else Seems To Approve: Now, while friends and family can be some straight up haters when it comes to even a wonderful mate, if NO ONE in your life is willing to cosign the relationshipthis may be worth exploring. Why dont they like him? Is it the way he speaks to you? Do they feel like you are using him (or vice versa)? Does he have a checkered past, or worse, a checkered present? If your peoples reasons for voting no on your beau are sound, then you should give them some serious thought. Trust me, if your mama saw good ole Tommy on www.thugginluvin.com, shes not hating
5) You Cant Stop Your Wandering Eye: Even the happiest woman can recognize other fine men in her space. She may even occasionally fantasize about doing some extra-curricular activity here and there. However, if you feel that you are constantly worrying over men other than the one youre with, then you might not be happy enough at home. If thats the case, you may wish to consider bouncing before you make a move that can hurt you both.
6) He Bores You: Love isnt exciting every day; a wise man told me that even the best relationships may resemble an old, comfortable pair of socks over time. However, if you find that your boo is dry as toast more often than not, then you probably arent with the right person.
7) You Hate His Interests: The Feeling Is Mutual: A fervent D.I.Y-er can peacefully co-exist with a sports fanatic even if they have no interest in participating in each others activities. But if the things that he does actually bother or annoy you, then you might not be able to make this work. Even the girlfriend who hates basketball should be cool with sitting through some games, just as he should be down to drive you to the craft store and hold some sticks in place so you can finish your birdhouse. If you cant support one anothers passions enough to at least agree to give each other space to engage them in peace, no bueno.
You Dont See A Future With Him: Hey, Mr. Right Now is more than sufficient if you BOTH are cool with having a little fun. But if you are ready for something of significance and hes clearly not itwell, he aint it! Dont prolong the inevitable or cause either of you any unnecessary pain by trying to put a square peg in a round hole.
9) He s Not Trustworthy: No matter how much you may like someone, if he doesnt deserve your trustif he misrepresents his actions, doesnt make time for you or seems guarded about significant portions of his life, then you are more likely than not dealing with Mr. Wrongy McWrongerton.
he family of an 81-year-old pastor is in mourning after he was killed at his home yesterday afternoon.
He has been identified as Samuel Anderson from Pen Harbour, Clarendon.
Reports are that about 2 p.m., family members found the body of the reverend at his home.
robbery motive
Anderson's body had a wound to his head and several stab wounds to his upper body. According to the police, Anderson's home was ransacked and robbery is believed to be the motive.
The police suspect that Anderson might have known his attackers. The Clarendon police are investigating.
Rev. Grant Storms, a renowned anti-gay Christian pastor from Louisiana was arrested last week for masturbating at a public park, in the vicinity of a carousel and playground where children were present.
According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, one woman saw Storms parked in his van "looking at the playground area that contained children playing, with his zipper down...," the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office report read. After judging that Storms was masturbating, the woman and another mother who witnessed the event both alerted deputies.
After being apprehended by authorities, Storms claimed that he had been urinating into a bottle. He was then booked for obscenity -- charges that he denied -- and then released due to overcrowding in the jail.
The pastor appeared less willing to discuss the matter at a press conference on Tuesday, during which he blamed "pornography" for the incident.
"Pornography is destructive and it can ruin a person's life, and it ruined my life," he said at the conference, admitting that he had his hands in his pants, but maintaining that he wasn't masturbating. "Do I have problems? Yes. Did I do something wrong? Yes."
Despite his apology, which he also extended to the gay community, to which he has been a prominent opponent, Grants also denied claims that he had been "looking at the children" in the area.
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, - The Steering Committee of the Haiti Reconstruction Fund (HRF) has just approved US$52 million in new projects and announced US$60 million in new contributions for rebuilding the country.
The projects that were approved include a programme to support housing and community reconstruction (for nearly US $25 million) and an earthquake prevention project for the north of Haiti (US $10 million).
In addition, support was indicated for a housing finance facility (US $10 million) and a milk production and nutrition project (US $17 million), provided that partners are confirmed to appraise and supervise these projects.
New contributions were also announced by the Governments of Japan and Spain for US$30 million each.
"This additional contribution completes the US$100 million commitment in aid promised by Japan during the International Donors Conference in March 2010 in New York. Haiti's reconstruction remains a global challenge, but I am convinced that the Haitian people, with the help of the international community, will face it up successfully," said the Japanese representative, Kentaro Minami.
Spain's Special Ambassador for Haiti Reconstruction, Arturo Reig Tapia, said that through this collaboration, his country wants to boost the leadership of the Haitian government, as well as encourage the most efficient degree of coordination efforts towards reconstruction.
As of this month, 17 donors have committed US$329 million to the Fund of which US$282 million has been received. Twenty-three percent of all reconstruction finance mobilized for Haiti in 2010 was channeled through the HRF.
The HRF is a partnership between the international community and the Government of Haiti. It mobilizes, coordinates and allocates financial contributions from international donors to fund high-priority reconstruction projects and provide budget support. Priorities are determined by the Government of Haiti through its Interim Haiti Recovery Commission (IHRC).
Having avoided a clash with Vybz Kartel in 2005, Assassin says his latest song, 'Run Di Place', is not in reference to the artiste and he still has no intentions of being in any lyrical confrontation with him.
In the song that was recorded on the weekend and released yesterday, Assassin uttered some lyrics that on the surface seemed to be directed at Vybz Kartel.
The song says: "How dem a gwaan like Assassin caan done the place/ Memba seh a wi have the fire tune dem weh a bun the place/ Oh? A mussi true mi nah bleach out mi face/ And true certain things you caan give mi fi taste/ Mi nah buy di chart dem/ Nah cheat the race/ Wi nah pick up no freaky ways/ Mi nah follow nuh bwoy mi a di boss fi miself/ Is like a big man deh school in a class to miself/ Dem all a seh mi mad so mek mi talk to miself/ But certain things mi nah do fi market miself/ Mi nah put out no freaky photographs wid miself/ The music haffi share, mi tek a part fi miself."
immoral
However, Assassin said the song is not about any particular artiste. Instead, he said he is voicing his disapproval about many things that he believes are immoral.
"It nuh have nothing fi do wid Kartel. When since Kartel have the monopoly on bleaching?" he questioned.
Assassin said he spoke about bleaching in his song, Hype Up, years ago, but "all of a sudden yuh caan seh bleaching and a nuh Kartel yuh a talk."
Even with his recent song Talk How Mi Feel, he said people thought the song was in reference to Vybz Kartel even though he spoke about many issues like Voicemail member Oneil Edwards' death and fake friends, among other issues.
He added, "It's incredible how everybody single out one little line. It a deal with so many things but people want to log on to one."
Assassin explained that he has been faced with many questions from people asking why he did not clash with Vybz Kartel when the opportunity arose in the initial stages of his career. However, he said he would not entertain a clash with him.
no boundaries
The deejay said that based on disrespectful statement made by Kartel in his lyrics it showed he had no boundaries. "I could not entertain any combat with a man like that," Assassin told THE STAR, noting that his mother was ill at the time when the deejay made offensive reference to her.
"My legacy in music will not be tarnished by being in any squabble with a man like that, especially a man without boundaries."
Instead, Assassin said he will be focusing on his career and on his journey to 'run di place'.
"I have all the faculties weh woulda mek an artiste run di place," he said, adding that he is a consistent artiste and a good performer.
Yet, he has not been able to get to the level he desires. However, Assassin says he refuses to use gimmicks and/or lose his values in order to be successful.
"I am not going to sell out my values. Wi bun dem, no man nuffi bleach. Wi bun dat straight from dem time deh til now," he said.
So moving forward, "I will no longer be passive. I will no longer allow them to abuse me. I am going to be taking it to them. I have been abused in terms of the type of injustice weh reach mi. We a tek on the thing 100 per cent. Wi just out right now, run di place wi seh," Assassin said.
One of the Jamaica's most wanted men was killed by police on Saturday.
Donovan Topping o/c 'Don Topping' and 'Dan Dan', 40-year-old from Port Henderson Road, St Catherine, was fatally shot by members of the Manchester Police operations unit in Newport, Manchester.
Topping, the police said, was wanted for a number of murders and shooting incidents in St Catherine - mainly Portmore and Spanish Town.
He was identified as one of the main enforcers for the Clansman Gang which is based in Spanish Town. He was on the most-wanted list for the St Catherine South and St Catherine North police divisions.
pistol and ammo
A release from the police on Saturday night, said the police seized a Stern Ruger 9mm pistol and 12 9mm rounds of ammunition following the fatal shooting of Topping.
The Bureau of Special Investigations is investigating the shooting. The Independent Commission has also been informed.
(CNN) -- It all started with a New Year's Eve party. The cushy gig probably sounded irresistible to singing sensations like Beyoncé, Usher and Mariah Carey: a private concert in the luxurious Caribbean island of St. Barts to ring in a new year before a group of dignitaries who were big fans.
But that was before everything came to light, courtesy of WikiLeaks.
Those artists and others, including Nelly Fuertado and rapper 50 Cent, have recently faced sharp criticism for accepting payments for performances from the family of Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
The scandal highlights how very easily stars can find themselves smack dab in the middle of a major political firestorm for simply doing what they do best: making money for their talents.
In February, it was reported that cables obtained by the secrets-revealing WikiLeaks website detailed lavish spending by Gadhafi's sons, including large sums of money paid to American singers for performances. Within the past few days, Beyoncé, Usher, Carey and Fuertado have announced that they either have donated or plan to donate the money earned to charities.
Carey recently released a statement saying she was embar****ed by the scandal.
"Going forward, this is a lesson for all artists to learn from," the singer said. "We need to be more aware and take more responsibility regardless of who books our shows. Ultimately we as artists are to be held accountable."
"You really have to be very careful and do your research," said Matthew "Mateo" Rajkumar, chief executive officer of the American Talent Agency. "You have to make sure you know where the money is coming from."
Rajkumar's company specializes in booking urban American music artists overseas, with a heavy concentration in the markets of Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. His clients have included big names in hip-hop like Fat Joe, Missy Elliott, Wyclef Jean and Busta Rhymes.
Rajkumar said an intense vetting process is crucial to making sure artists don't find themselves performing for dictators or accepting "*la*hd money." He said he recently had to turn down gigs in North Africa for artists like singer Chrissette
Michele because the deal didn't meet his standards.
"It's such a coincidence in that we recently turned down a deal coming from people we have worked with in Uganda, where we had offers in Libya that we turned down," he said. "When I say recently, I mean before the recent uprising.
We do everything we can to make sure we are protecting our artists."
The CEO said his company was one of the first to see the potential market abroad for celebrity artists and brokered a deal in 2008 for 50 Cent to appear in Angola, which snagged the rapper one of his largest paydays for a concert to date: $1.4 million.
"The money had to play a factor in getting an artist of his stature at that time to go over there, but there were other things that we did," Rajkumar said of booking 50 Cent for the Angola concert. "We tied in a visit to the embassy and did a huge AIDS awareness event with a bunch of kids, as well as a hospital and orphanage donation, so there was also an element of giving back to the country."
Fans in the United States and major countries in Europe have better access to concerts by some of their favorite acts, Rajkumar said, but the presence of these same stars in some of the smaller and more far-flung countries generates a great deal of interest that artists can cash in on.
Oil companies, cell phone companies and breweries are usually the three big types of industries that sponsor such shows, as well as local governments, which want to put their country on the map and stimulate tourism. When rapper Snoop Dogg performed in Croatia in 2008, he packed Zagreb's Dom Sportova arena with 10,000 fans, and the event made the style section of the Croatia Tourist Center website.
But the shows aren't cheap to produce, with the need for increased security and the fees paid both to the artist and for expenses like flying in the artist's entourage and equipment needed to mount a concert.
"These events are hardly ever put on for the financial benefit," said Rajkumar, who added that often, fans in these countries cannot afford expensive tickets. "It's more for the exposure and publicity it generates."
Such appearances can also expand artists' fan bases and their wallets.
Peter Katsis, a music manager and a senior vice president of music for Prospect Park Entertainment, recently told CNN that the temptation is absolutely there for artists to "just take the check."
"The attraction is obviously the money," said Katsis, who has worked with such performers as the Backstreet Boys, Jane's Addiction and Korn. "You can sometimes make as much as you can in a week on tour by doing one show."
Motorists who utilise designated parking areas on some streets in downtown Kingston are now being plagued by suspected extortionists who use large stones to deny access to these areas and are demanding money to allow parking.
Information reaching THE STAR is that the practice is popular among roadways such as Orange, Princess and Barry streets among others.
"If motorists come out of their vehicles to remove the stones, they meet up on resistance from thugs, verbal first, and then the motorists will back down," Special Inspector Noel Daley from the Harbour Street Police Post explained to THE STAR.
THE STAR also understands that in an attempt to avoid such encounters, motorists are now making use of 'no parking areas'.
"Most persons will park in no parking areas and take their chance with the police rather than face the extortionists," Daley emphasised.
'early bird' motorists
The police also explain that these large stones are placed in these parking areas from as early as 6 a.m. forcing 'early bird' motorists to 'gi dem a ting' to access parking.
Daley said that the stones are always removed by police officers on duty but within 15 minutes of the police leaving and returning, the stones are there again.
At the same time, the police are facing difficulty in arresting the culprits as motorists are reluctant to give statements and implicate the thugs for fear of their lives. "We have caught motorists handing over money, but in our endeavour to arrest these persons, the motorists seh a dem fren and dem jus a gi dem a thing," Daley remarked.
He reiterated that the police suspect that such responses are given by motorists for fear of retaliation from thugs. Nonetheless, at least two persons have been arrested and charged so far.
the police are appealing to motorists that whenever they meet up on any such situation, they are to inform the police as soon as possible.
"We know what they're going through, but we need their assistance to deter them from doing what they are doing," Special Inspector Daley explained.
( l - r ) Carolyn Cooper, Vybz Kartel
Deejay Vybz Kartel is eyeing his guest lecture at the University of the West Indies (UWI) tonight as a good step for not only himself but dancehall music.
The deejay will be creating waves today when he speaks on 'Pretty as a Colouring Book: My Life and My Art', at the Undercroft of the Senate Building on the UWI campus. The deejay was invited to lecture by Professor Carolyn Cooper who teaches a course on 'Reggae Poetry' in the Department of Literatures in English. The announcement of Kartel's lecture raised a number of eyebrows on various social networking sites, but the deejay is looking at the opportunity as a positive one.
He told THE STAR recently, "I think it is not only a good step for me, but a great step for dancehall. It shows that at least few of us dancehall artistes have the mental capacity to speak on the music as true ambassadors on a tertiary level and not all of us are 'duppy bat' and 'butu' like."
not surprised
According to Kartel, he is honoured to be lecturing at the university and is not surprised by the invitation. "I was not surprised. On the contrary, it was as if I was expecting her invitation. I knew that was gonna be the end product of our back and forth emails," he said. The deejay boasted that he has finished preparing for the lecture when THE STAR spoke with him earlier in the week.
He added, "the topic is about me, my life my art. And I am not preparing, I'm prepared. My life, so the title of the lecture speaks for itself. I'll be throwing questions out from time to time during the lecture, and might probably answer a dozen questions after."
In a release sent to THE STAR, Cooper explained that in her course, the students' first assignment they are given the freedom to select a song by any reggae/dancehall lyricist they like and analyse its literary qualities. Each year, some students select a song by Vybz Kartel, the self-styled 'teacha'. Even though he's not one of the prescribed lyricists on the course, Prof Cooper considered it appropriate to invite Kartel to speak to her class. Given the popularity of the artiste, Cooper decided to widen the audience and open up the lecture to the broader university community and the general public.
The release added that Vybz Kartel's lecture provides an excellent opportunity for the UWI to demonstrate its leadership role in engaging public debate on issues of colour, class and gender as manifested in Jamaican popular music. Kartel, who thrives on controversy, is guaranteed to give a provocative talk, for example in defence of skin bleaching which, he claims, creates a canvas for showing up his tattoos.
LIME recently announced that they will be providing exclusive live mobile television coverage of the lecture.
Supporters of the Turks and Caicos Islanders United for Justice and Equality (TCIUJE) took to the streets here yesterday, demanding an end to British rule and a return to parliamentary democracy that was halted by London in 2009.
"We are on the streets today looking for an election date, we need a date for the elections," TCIUJE spokesman Devon Williams told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC).
"By and large elections were four years ago and we are ready for another election. The British have been here for two years to do whatever they had to do, give us back an election so that we can put our own people back into office," he added.
London in August 2009 resumed daily administration of the affairs of this British Overseas Territory, disbanded the locally elected government and suspended the legislature after a Commission of Inquiry said it found widespread corruption under the administration of former premier Michael Misick.
The former premier, who resigned in March 2009, after the commission made its findings public, in a statement this week called on all Turks and Caicos Islanders, churches and political parties to put differences aside and "unite to fight the common enemy the British.
"They (the British) have divided and conquered us. Let's show that we are wise and we will not be defeated. We are after all one people, there is strength in unity and if we unite we can peacefully defeat the British Empire as the great Indian statesman Mahatma Gandhi did. He once stated, referring to the British, "they cannot take away our self-respect if we do not give it to them".
Misick accused London of staging what he termed a "modern-day coup" in the Turks and Caicos Islands while the rest of the world was not watching.
"All of the democratic institutions have been suspended. The governor (Gordon Wetherell) is now the executive, the legislative. He sits on a panel that decides who should be prosecuted. He appoints judges and so his position is no different than that of the strong man that made a recent coup in Niger or any other recent coup around the world.
"In fact, it's worst because even in Honduras after the coup they left the parliament in place," he said.
Both the People's Democratic Movement (PDM) and the Progressive National Party (PNP) have come out in support of the call for fresh elections and the end to British rule.
PDM leader Doug Parnell urged supporters to participate in the demonstration, while PNP leader Galmo Williams said it was time to "put aside differences".
"The Progressive National Party supports the statement of the leader of the People's Democratic Movement made at their press conference of last Thursday calling for a unity march of Turks and Caicos Islanders on March 8," he said.
"As leader of the PNP I take this opportunity to publicly accept Mr Parnell's open invitation to join and participate in this march for national unity on behalf of the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
"Our prayer is that God would bless our country as we unite and put aside our differences for the betterment of all of our people," said Williams who succeeded Misick as premier.
The TCIUJE is accusing London of occupying the British Overseas territory "indefinitely" adding "that is just unacceptable.
"We need an election, we need democracy, it is a shame. In the Caribbean, in the western hemisphere, there is a small country existing without no democracy, no democratically elected government, no local government officials, all people are brought in to occupy this country. We are demanding an election," said the TCIUJE's spokesman.
He said the election date should be announced "right away" and accused the police of using force to try to break up the demonstrations.
"As we speak now the officers are in their riot gears are beginning to arrive and they are preparing to use force and physically take the streets back," he said.
Stage Name: Assassin, aka Agent Sasco
Real Name: Jeffrey Campbell
Birth Month: December
How did you get started in the business?
I was schoolmates with Spragga Benz's nephew, and when I moved on to fifth form he started to pursue his musical career. I decided that I wanted to pursue my career.
We were at a show and Spragga did one of my songs, Big Up All The Shotta Dem, which got a good response. He told me that I should try to get my material out, so between lower and upper six I started trying it out. It was that summer I really started.
What has been your most memorable moment in the business yet?
One moment that stood out is performing at a Fully Loaded some years ago. At that time it was the biggest audience I had ever been before and it was the first time people would be actually seeing me. Spragga called me out and I came out with To The World on the 'Rice and Peas' rhythm and everybody, all the sand pon the beach, jump up.
What have you been up to lately?
I'm back in the studio doing recordings for an album that we're working on. It's not named as yet so we encourage fans to suggest names on the Facebook page. I was taking a backseat because I didn't want to join the hip-hop thing that the dancehall was going through. Starting this year, I've been on Big Ship's Pepper rhythm, giving it to them with Nothing At All.
Do you look up to any specific artiste and why?
Growing up, Professor Nuts because of that rhyming style, and how he communicated through song, it was like on the corner same way and he still maintained the comedic side. You also have people like Spragga, Shabba, Bounty and Beenie. Basically anyone who has contributed to the growth of the music.
Are you happy with the way things are going for your musical career right now?
Yes. Over the years I was taking a different approach to my work and was hoping for things to fall into place, but I'm more proactive now. What I'm most comfortable with is my competence in all the faculties. Whether it be recordings, writing or performing. You learn to count your blessings and wherever there is room for improvement I will be doing that.
Do you have any advice for young artistes coming up?
Love the music and think about the industry before yourself because whatever happens in the industry will affect you. Be aware of your responsibility as a human being and as an artiste. Don't just come to drag your foot through the thing and take what you can get. You have to also respect those who came before you and try to set it for those to come.
Serena Williams was given "emergency treatment" Monday for a hematoma related to a *la*hd clot in her lungs, says People magazine. Doctors who were treating Williams' injured foot discovered the embolism in her lungs last week, her spokeswoman told the magazine.
Williams is reportedly receiving treatment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where "doctors are continuing to monitor her situation closely to avoid additional complications," according to spokeswoman Nicole Chabot.
The pulmonary embolism was diagnosed after Williams went to Los Angeles for treatment. The tennis star has fought through injuries to her feet and knees in recent years; she hasn't competed in a tournament since she won her fourth Wimbledon title last July.
Despite her condition, Williams still attended Oscars parties thrown by Elton John and Vanity Fair Sunday night.
Kamisha Richard (left) was allegedly stabbed to death by her boyfriend's sister, Kayla Henriques (right)over a $20 loan for diapers.
A Brooklyn teen was busted Tuesday for fatally stabbing her brother's girlfriend in a fight sparked by an argument over a $20 loan to buy diapers, police sources said.
Kayla Henriques, 18, calmly ate Chinese food after confessing to the Monday night attack in a Brooklyn housing project, sources told the Daily News.
John Jay College graduate Kamisha Richards was knifed once in the chest in the Cypress Hills Houses on Sutter Ave. in East New York about 10:35 p.m., officials said.
"It didn't look like she was stabbed," said a relative of Richard's boyfriend. "She just stumbled, and I caught her. Then all she said was, 'Oh, God.' I tried to help her, stop a rag on to stop the bleeding."
Richards was an on-and-off resident of the Cypress Hills complex, home to her boyfriend of seven years, Ramel Henriques.
Kayla Henriques, known in the neighborhood as KK, is the mother of an 11-month-old boy. She was grabbed by police in a building near the crime scene.
Face book exchanges from over the weekend showed Richards and Henriques trading online insults.
"Kayla now u getin outa hand...I hope u having fun entertaining the world...Trust, IMA HAVE THE LAST LAUGH!!!" Richards posted Sunday night.
Kayla Henriques offered a terse, ominous reply: "We will see."
One of Henriques' uncles said the hard feelings escalated through a series of text messages.
The wounded Richards was discovered by one of her boyfriend's relatives, who came home from work to find the life seeping out of the victim.
"She wasn't panicking," the relative said. "She was calm. I called the ambulance and put pressure on (the wound).
I did everything I could to try to save the girl."
Richards - who hoped to apply to law school in the fall - was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital, but never opened her eyes again.
"My daughter's dead!" the victim's father screamed out at the crime scene, where about 25 stunned relatives and friends gathered. "My daughter's dead!"
Richards was a graduate of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and relatives said she worked security for JPMorgan Chase.
Richards' friends and relatives said the victim had recently loaned the sister $20 to buy disposable diapers and milk for KK's infant - and became angry after learning the money was spent on other things.
"My daughter takes care of the whole family there," Richards' father said. "(The sister) had a baby recently. My daughter gave her $20 to go buy some milk and Pampers. She went and spent the money on something else. They argued about it. ... She (the boyfriend's sister) waited for her to come home from work, and did her."
A relative of the sister said the woman acted in self-defense.
"She said she didn't mean to do it," the woman said. "They were arguing. Kamisha tried to stab her with scissors, and it was self-defense. She said that she came at her and she had to do it. She was sorry. That's all she kept saying, that it wasn't supposed to be like this."
The relative said the boyfriend is "devastated."
"He was just crying, asking why," the relative said. "We were all crying. Kamisha was like my sister.
"I just wish this was a dream."
Top flight deejay Assassin has dropped a second single, Run Di Place, on his own Boardhouse Records label that appears to be making a jest of Vybz Kartels dominance of the local dancehall market.
Playing the devils advocate, Assassin asks the question why he, a talented deejay who has worked hard to finetune his skills, has not been given a chance to, in the local parlance, run the place. And eureka, he reaches a conclusion and shares his findings with the public.
He deejays:
Oh, ah mussi true mi nah bleach mi face
Or true certain tings yu caan gi me fi taste
Mi nah buy the charts dem, nah cheat the race
Mi nah pick up no freaky ways
Fi wah?
Run the place
At no point does Assassin mention Vybz Kartel by name but certain references are unmistakable and he appears to make fun of the self-styled Teacha and his guerilla-style of Internet marketing, disseminating pornographic images and then skin-bleaching to shock and awe the public and dominate media headlines.
Say dem a awah? Mi laugh to miself (haha)
Certain things mi nah do fi market miself
Mi nah put out no freaky photographs wid miself
The music haffi share, mi tek a part fi miself
The decision by the British government to scale down its naval presence in the region, has caused many in the Caribbean to be very concerned.
A BBC Caribbean Report stated on Tuesday that the Antigua and Barbuda National Security Minister, Dr Errol Cort, says recent sightings of a drug submarine in Caribbean waters indicate just how serious the drug trafficking problem remains in the Caribbean.
He says the ongoing clampdown on drug networks in Mexico has resulted in an increase in drug trafficking especially in the waters of the southern and north-eastern Caribbean.
He revealed that quite troubling "for the first time in the history of the north-eastern Caribbean" a semi-submersible submarine used to ship illegal drugs has been spotted in the area.
It is not known what became of the submarine.
Cort called for more regional collaboration and a greater involvement of American, French and Dutch navies that still have a presence in the region, to combat the drug traffickers.
A United States policeman was taken into custody by his colleagues in Atlanta recently after he was interdicted for stealing US$2,000 from the purse of a Jamaican diplomat.
The policeman, who is now under investigation, is reportedly to have taken the money when the woman, who is employed to a Jamaican government ministry, left her pouch at the airport in Atlanta.
According to a report on Fox 5 news, the diplomat in question is now on assignment in Europe. The network said the Atlanta police are now reportedly in discussion with the Clayton County District Attorney to determine if criminal charges will be pursued against the policeman.
The diplomat. who left her bag behind, has also reportedly said she is cooperating with this investigation.
The report indicates that the diplomat was making her way through Atlanta's busy airport, near carousel #7 where she picked up her bags and walked out to the curb to be picked up.
According to further police reports, she then realised she had left her black pouch on a seat with her passport and US$2,000 cash inside.
She returned inside the airport where a passenger explained to her that the pouch had been turned in at the AirTrans counter.
to Lost and Found
The report further indicates that a person at the counter told the diplomat that an Atlanta policeman, identified as Steven Brown, had taken the pouch and planned to turn it in to Lost and Found.
On that advice, she reportedly checked with Lost and Found and was told that they had not received the pouch. Moments later, Brown handed her the pouch, saying he had found it in the bathroom.
However, after the diplomat checked the pouch, she found her passport but the US$2,000 was gone.
The Atlanta Police Department released a statement saying, "Chief Turner believes that no Atlanta police officer is above the law, and should be held accountable for his or her actions."
The report later states that the diplomat had issued a statement saying that the Atlanta police returned the money to her.
Brown also reportedly said through a union spokesperson that he is sorry, regretful and embar****ed that the situation occurred.
When THE WEEKEND STAR contacted the Atlanta Police Department, they advised that further checks would have to be made with their Central Records department to see how far the investigations against Brown are.
Officials at the ministry, where the diplomat works, have declined to comment on the matter.
The Department of Literatures in English and the Centre for Gender and Development Studies at the University of the West Indies, Mona are hosting a public lecture by Adidja 'Vybz Kartel' Palmer on Thursday, March 10 at 7 p.m., at the Undercroft of the Senate Building.
Kartel will speak on the topic, "'Pretty as a Colouring Book': My Life and My Art."
The invitation to speak was given to Kartel by Professor Carolyn Cooper who teaches a course on 'Reggae Poetry' in the Department of Literatures in English at Mona. The course focuses on the lyrics of Burning Spear, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, Steel Pulse, Tanya Stephens and Buju Banton.
literary qualities
For their first assignment, students are given the freedom to select a song by any reggae/dancehall lyricist they like and analyse its literary qualities. Each year, some students select a song by Vybz Kartel, the self-styled 'teacha'. Even though he's not one of the prescribed lyricists on the course, Prof. Cooper considered it appropriate to invite Kartel to speak to her class.
But, given the popularity of the artiste, she decided to widen the audience and open up the lecture to the broader University community and the general public. Kartel, who thrives on controversy, is guaranteed to give a provocative talk, for example in defence of skin-bleaching which shows up his tattoos.
Like Harvard University, which recently honoured Columbian-born musician Shakira with the '2011 Artist of the Year Award', the University of the West Indies recognises the value of keeping the lines of communication open between the academy and the practitioners of popular culture, especially music.
Under her leadership
In 1994, the Mona campus of the UWI established the Reggae Studies Unit on the initiative of Prof Carolyn Cooper. Under her leadership, the Unit introduced the annual Bob Marley lecture, in association with the Bob Marley Foundation, which licensed the University to use the Marley name.
The Unit collaborated with the Foundation to host an international symposium to mark Bob Marley's 50th birthday. In addition to hosting public lectures and conferences, the Unit established an undergraduate degree programme in Entertainment and Cultural Enterprise Management. The first class graduated in 2000. This is one of the most highly sought after degrees in the Faculty of Humanities and Education.
The Reggae Studies Unit led the way and other departments followed. The Department of Government, the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work and the Department of Literatures in English all teach courses that focus on reggae and dancehall.
Vybz Kartel's lecture on Thursday provides an excellent opportunity for the UWI to demonstrate its leadership role in engaging public debate on issues of colour, class and gender as manifested in Jamaican popular music.
Dancehall Producer Tarik 'Russian' Johnston, was held by police at the Piarco International Airport in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad for obscene language and disorderly conduct on Saturday.
Tight lipped administrators at Piarco refused to comment but airport police and other security personnel said that Johnston, 22, had refused a request by a security officer and let off a string of expletives. He was detained but was subsequently released.
Johnston who is known for dancehall rhythms like Go Go Club and Nuh Fear was also involved in another dispute with a security guard at the Digicel Jamaica Consumer Electronics Show in October last year. There he was reported to have disobeyed the officer by walking into a restricted area.
And just last month Johnston was again in the news after he came on to the scene of a mob beating. Police reports say the mob was beating a man who robbed a schoolboy. Johnston fired a shot from his licensed firearm to disperse the crowd but unknown to him, a gunshot was returned by another licensed firearm holder. Johnston then ran, climbed a wall and injured his shoulder.
Carolyn Cooper, Gleaner Writer
I got an instructive email from Vybz Kartel last Wednesday in response to my letter to the editor published that same day ('More on Kartel and bleaching'). I reproduce it here with his permission. Since the email was sent on his BlackBerry, the punctuation was a bit informal, so I did just a little editing for clarity.
"Ms Cooper, firstly, I'd like to wish you a pleasant goodnight (or morning depending on when u receive this email). Secondly, I'd like to say that I am the author of the song. Russian didn't write a line. And if you'd paid as much attention to the dexterity exhibited in the song as you have to the perceived subliminal messages of self-hate blah blah blah etc etc, you'd have figured that out.
"Thirdly, neither 'di gyal dem' opinion or urs matter to vybz kartel. What matters is that my songs get so popular (as is the case with the one u and ur colleagues 'a look a fawud offa'), I can provide for myself and my family which I have been doing and will continue to do so, especially with the help of people such as urself who, by giving so much energy to vybz kartel via articles like this, make vybz kartel 'the talked about one'. Which is all I need to capitalise on the prize. I hope you people write about me every day of the week. Thanks and have a goodnight.
"Famously yours, ADIDJA 'MICHAEL CAKESOAP JACKSON' PALMER"
I sent an equally frank response:
"Mr Palmer, great to hear from you. I've wanted to link with you for a long time, so I'm glad you decided to get in touch with me. I don't know if you saw my column on Sunday, as well as yesterday's letter to the editor. Here's the link to that column: http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20110227/cleisure/cleisure3.html.
"I certainly agree with you that the more we talk about Vybz Kartel, the more popular we make you. I don't have a problem with that. In fact, I'm quite proud of all the DJs who have been able to make a very good living from their craft. Mi know nuff people grudge unnu, but I am not one of them. I don't know if you saw my column in which I strongly defended Rampin' Shop when other people were attacking you and Spice. Here's the link to that column: http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20090222/cleisure/cleisure6.html.
"Thanks for clarifying that you are the author of the lyrics that Russian performed. So, in a sense, I was right that those are all your words. Then, as you say, I know my opinion doesn't really matter to you. But, for what it's worth, I think you're such a powerful role model for young people, I'm hoping you would think about reclaiming your original skin colour, which I thought was quite fine. Yes, I know, that's just my opinion.
"I see Michael Jackson is a role model for you. But he really was a tragic figure. My opinion again :=) Michael was such a cute, little black boy. And he turned himself into a monstrosity. He was rich enough to manufacture himself but 'im never turn out so right'. Something went wrong in the factory.
"Even if he'd had vitiligo, he didn't have to end up looking the way he did. Anyhow, mek mi know what yu think about all of these opinions. And, given your appreciation of the role of the media in feeding celebrity, I figure you won't object to my reproducing our email correspondence in my column on Sunday. So let me know if it's OK with you. And in response to your P.S., 'pretty' is a word usually associated with females, as distinct from 'handsome', which usually refers to males.
"Then I teach a course on Reggae Poetry at UWI and the first assignment I give students each year is to select any reggae/dancehall song they like and analyse its literary qualities. As usual, some of the students selected your songs this semester. It would be great if you would come to one of the lectures and talk about your creative work. I can just see the headline, 'Vybz Kartel lectures at UWI'. DWL. Looking forward to your response.
"Bless
"Carolyn"
PUBLIC EDUCATION
Mr Palmer readily accepted my invitation. So Vybz Kartel is going to lecture at UWI this Thursday at 7 p.m. on the topic 'Pretty Like a Colouring Book: My Life and My Art'. The Department of Literatures in English and the Centre for Gender and Development Studies are hosting the lecture, which takes place at the Undercroft of the Senate building. The public is invited to attend.
I'd actually like to see Vybz Kartel register as a student at the University of the West Indies and apply his considerable intellect in another sphere of influence. How many young men on the corner might consider the option of formal education if they saw Kartel in university!
Another cultural event this week to which the public is invited is the launch of the book Herbs of Jamaica, written by Ivelyn Harris, a seventh-generation Maroon herbalist. The launch takes place on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Lecture Hall of the Institute of Jamaica on East Street.
Ms Harris has spent over 30 years documenting the healing properties of Jamaican herbs. These natural products have been tested by the Maroons for more than 300 years. Herbal remedies can improve sexual stamina; heal rashes, sores, stings and bites; relieve menstrual, urinary and prostate problems; and a host of other ailments. I wonder if there's a herbal cure for the mental slavery, which is so vividly manifested these days in the plague of skin bleaching.
A home-made shotgun was seized during a raid at a high school in Manchester last Thursday.
The shotgun was among several weapons seized by the police during the raid, in which three students were also detained. The students, THE STAR understands, have since been charged with indecent language, assault of a police officer and possession of an offensive weapon.
Other items reportedly confiscated included 25 pairs of scissors, two ratchet knives, three open-blade knives, two round envelopes containing grabba and tobacco, 10 jammers (sharpened ice picks) and condoms.
The police also targeted students who were deemed to be improperly dressed for school.
Some of the male students who were reportedly wearing their pants too tight were then 'loosened up' by the police who used scissors and razors to remove the threading. Female students wearing miniskirts had them lengthened by female police personnel.
The police party was headed by Inspector Anthony Currie of the Christiana police who is also the zone commander for northern Manchester.
The Manchester North Operational support team, school safety resource officers and members of the Island Special Constabulary Force also assisted in the search.
Inspector Currie told THE STAR that the search was part of an ongoing drive by the police to target schools in northern Manchester to eliminate deviant behaviour within the institutions.
