A mother and son, accused of fleecing over US$600,000 ($42.6 million) from American citizens in a lottery scam, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Mag-istrate's court on Wednesday.
Yowo Senhi Morle, 27, and his 48-year-old mother, Hazel Clarke, both from Bogue Village, St James, appeared to answer to charges of obtaining money by false pretence, conspiracy to defraud and engaging in transactions that involve criminal property.
The court was told that the accused contacted complainants in the United States and told them that they won the Australian lottery and that they should send varying sums to collect their winnings.
One of the complainants was said to be a 74-year-old woman who the accused collected US$400,000 ($28.4 million) from. They are accused of collecting over US$600,000 from the complainants.
The court was also told that Clarke was found with a list of names and numbers belonging to complainants and the amounts they have paid.
Linton Walters, who is representing the accused, made a bail application for both, noting that 12 other persons were before the court in regard to the same lottery scam, and to date there are no statements from any of the complainants on those files, and he felt it would be no different in this case.
In addition, he said his clients were willing to submit to any bail conditions imposed by the court. However, the Crown indicated that it was opposed to bail for Morle because of the amount of money collected and property seized, they believed he posed a flight risk. The police say they have seized property and money valuing $38 million so far, including a bank account with $4.9 million.
The police also said the accused used fake identification to collect the money from Western Union, and that was also one of their concerns regarding giving him bail.
After listening to both sides, Resident Magistrate Glen Brown granted Clarke $1 million bail with one, two or three sureties, and also ordered her fingerprints be taken.
Morle, on the other hand, was ordered remanded until the next mention date of July 16.The PSOJ is offering the money through Crime Stop.
Chambers was slain last Friday outside the JUTC's Spanish Town depot in St Catherine.
The police have not yet made a breakthrough in the killing, but say they have been following several strong leads.
Condemn murder
Meanwhile, the Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Association of Jamaica has also joined in condemning the murder.
The association, for which Douglas was an auditor for the last 10 years, said it hoped the "martyrdom" would bring an end to corruption.
In Parliament yesterday, Transport and Works Minister Mike Henry reiterated that Chambers' death would in no way halt the planned redundancy exercise at the JUTC.
Henry said 485 employees, including some workers at the Portmore and Rockfort depots, would be issued with walking papers this afternoon.
Workers at the Spanish Town depot in St Catherine were issued with redundancy notices yesterday.
Hours to reconsider
Henry said an additional 65 drivers who declined to be trained for the single-operator programme have until midday today to reconsider their positions or be added to the redundancy list.
He further said the Government was trying to find a suitable chairman and president.
"Persons are being interviewed in respect of both positions and are likely to be in place quite soon," he said.
There were reports that Chambers and his workers had an acrimonious relationship arising from a number of contentious redundancies and restructuring exercises.
But Henry said those who were opposed to the current reshuffle at the JUTC should take issue with him and not the members of the board.
Paid to do nothing
According to the minister, the current board took over the company with a workforce of 2,743 individuals, while there was an average roll-out of some 288 buses.
He said this meant there were many workers being paid for doing nothing.
The workforce has now been trimmed to approximately 1,600, with the current ratio standing at five workers to one bus.
Henry reported yesterday that the JUTC has now cut its monthly losses from $150 million a month to approximately $70 million.

A man accused of breaching the Trademark Act by attaching his own brand to already manufactured toilet tissue, appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
Charged with breaches of the Trademark Act is Owen Collins, of a Luke Lane, Kingston address.
The court was told that on June 9, a police party carried out an operation in the Luke Lane area and searched a premises occupied by Collins. It is alleged that 1400 cartons of toilet tissue, bearing the characteristics of the brand Pure Joy, were found. The products however, had a different brand attached to them.
Collins' lawyer told the court however, that information he obtained from the relevant authorities, suggested that there was no existing trademark.

VIDEO shaing website YouTube must handover records of each clip watched on the site to media giant Viacom (Video & Audio Communications).
The date, time and IP address (computer address) of each person who watched it must also be given after a US court ruling.
US District Court judge Louis Stanton granted Viacom access to the records as part of its ongoing copyright infringement lawsuit against Google and its subsidiary YouTube but the move could have major implications for online privacy around the world.
A "Logging" database records the user ID and IP address of the viewer, the date and time of the request and the ID of the clip, and includes details of videos embedded on websites other than YouTube.
Difficult
In response to Google's claim that providing the data would be too difficult, Judge Stanton said: "While the Logging database is large, all of its contents can be copied on to a few 'over-the-shelf' four-terabyte hard drives."
"The motion to compel production of all data from the Logging database concerning each time a YouTube video has been viewed on the YouTube website or through embedding on a third-party website is granted."

JAY-Z'S 40/40 TARGETED IN CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT: Workers say club managers make them work for tips only.
According to the New York Daily News, the lawsuit from past and present servers, bartenders and other workers was certified as "class action" Tuesday by Manhattan Federal Judge Loretta Preska.
Hundreds of former 40/40 employees could also be eligible to collect if the current workers' win the trial, their attorney says. Preska said the workers' lawyershave made a "minimal" showing that the owners have violated federal wage and labor laws.
"The record contains corroborating evidence of the allegations," Preska wrote.

Two men who have been on the run after escaping custody in 1979 and 1980, respectively, were recaptured in a Kingfish-led operation on Saturday.
Both men, who have been using assumed names since escaping, have been positively identified as Michael Lawrence using the assumed name 'Paul Devon Johnson', 48, of Laws Street, and 56-year-old Errol Duncan, using the assumed name 'Keith Anthony Jones', of Princess Street, both in Kingston.
Duncan was convicted on gun-related charges and was serving a 17-year term at the time of his escape.
Lawrence was serving life after being convicted for murder in 1976. He lost his appeal in 1977 and escaped from the St Catherine District Prison in 1979.
Both men were held in an operation carried out at the Harbour View roundabout on Saturday by operatives from the NIB/Kingfish, Flying Squad and the Kingston Eastern police.

Ball is just around the corner and the focus of many TEENage girls is THE DRESS. Some have had their dress bought or made months in advanced. Others have yet to get theirs. Once all of that is out of the way however, what about accessories? Deciding on accessories is often one of the "down to crunch time" decisions, simply because it is so often taken for granted. In this now so fashion-forward world, we should know better. However, in case you don't quite get it yet, here are some dos and don'ts.
Complimenting vs Matching
DO NOT. match everything directly with your dress.
DO... find colours that compliment that of your dress for your nails and cl**tch.
Nails
DO NOT. go with the lime greens, shocking fuchsias or neon blues. It's inappropriate and simply TOO MUCH.
DO. go with pastels or bolds. Pastels are always classy. Bold colours (for example Deep blues, oranged or reds) can add some flavour and chicness to a formal outfit.
DO NOT. use neon for the accent design or go over the top on the complexity of the design.
DO. try French tips and designs with neutrals or pastels allows for a little extra without stepping out of the boundaries of elegant. Simple is better; don't take away from the dress as the main feature.
DO NOT. put on claws for nails. Too long is a bit scary.
Jewellery
DO NOT. mix jewellery types! Silver and diamond earrings with a gold necklace and pearl bracelet? Definite no-no.
DO. choose jewellery based on the look you're going for. Dresses in deep or earthy colours are best complimented with gold jewelry. Pearls give a classic look when worn with a solid-coloured dress and diamonds can compliment almost anything. Be careful with how you wear other precious stones. Silver is always a good "fall-back".
Bags
DO NOT. go "super-size". Though enormous bags are "all the rage", less is best for a formal event such as ball. Leave the tote bag at home.
DO. carry a small, yet cute cl**tch.
DO NOT. try to stuff your make-up case, phone, purse, etc into your cl**tch. An overstuffed cl**tch looks tacky.
DO. carry ONLY the essentials. And don't forget you ticket!
Shawls/Scarves
DO NOT. wear either article if not necessary. Both are a tad bit old-fashioned and dated.
DO. wear either one that comes with the dress or one in a complimentary colour that goes with your other accessories.
These tips are simply the tip of the iceberg in the world of fashion, but should hopefully give you a push in the right direction. In whatever you decide, remember that ball is a formal occasion so dress accordingly. Accessories can make or break you, make you look "fierce" or make you a big flop. So ladies, accessorise responsibly.
The amazing footage was captured during a routine hysterectomy operation. Gynaecologist Dr Jacques Donnez spotted it on the monitor during surgery.
The images, which have been released by New Scientist magazine, have been described as a "fascinating insight" into "the beginnings of life".
The egg belonged to a forty-five-year-old Belgian woman. Dr Donnez, of the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, believes that the images will help scientists gain greater understanding of the mechanisms and processes involved in reproduction and fertilisation.
"The release of the oocyte (egg) from the ovary is a crucial event in human reproduction", he told New Scientist.
The reddish swelling seen in the image is a follicle, from which the egg is released prior to its journey up the Fallopian tubes to the w****.
The egg itself, the yellow translucent object, is surrounded by support cells which help it through the journey.
Professor Alan McNeilly, from the Medical Research Council's Human Reproduction Unit in Edinburgh, told the BBC: "It really is a fascinating insight into ovulation, and to see it in real life is an incredibly rare occurrence.
"It really is a pivotal moment in the whole process, the beginnings of life in a way."

A MAN was charged today with hacking his wife and two grandchildren to death and badly wounding his daughter in an axe attack that has shocked Australia.
John Walsh, 69, did not enter a plea and was ordered to be held in custody when he appeared in court briefly on three charges of murder and one of attempted murder stemming from yesterdays attack in Cowra, 155 miles west of Sydney.
He will return to court next Monday and faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.
Investigators had few clues to the motive of the attack, which took place in the house where Walsh and his wife Mabel, 52, often looked after their grandchildren - seven-year-old Kevin Hodges and his sister Jaime Hodges, five - while their mother Shelley Walsh, 31, went to work as a police officer.

Comedian Oliver Samuels greets Actress Rosie Murray with a big kiss.
The title of Saturday night's concert at the Portmore Pines rooftop, St Catherine, was dubbed 'Timeless Music', with rocksteady being the focus of the first leg of International Comedy Fest 2K8.
Alton Ellis, in a rousing performance before a very small, audience, provided a lot of that 'timeless music' with Muriel, Let Him Try and Dancecrasher for dancing and sing-along delight.
Fab Five weighed in with their own lasting hits, including Shaving Cream, Asking for Love and Jamaican Woman, and the steelpan, keyboard and drum Steel and Ivory played the immortal Rockfort Rock, with Dance Xpressionz fusing dance and drama, as they dropped rocksteady moves and moved up to dancehall to Broader Than Broadway.
However, on a night hosted by Rosie Murray where the turnout was small but enthusiasm very strong, the 'timeless music' was compared to what is dominant on the airwaves today.
Fab Five's bass player, making his comments in between songs, made some of those comparisons, after the band played their 1970s hit Shaving Cream in their opening segment, during which a late light set-up finally illuminated the stage.
Three stints
"In those bad old days of the '70s, this song sold 80,000 copies in Jamaica alone. Now you can't even sell 800 copies of anything," he said. It was the first of three stints for Fab Five, the band proving music for Alton Ellis the last time around.
After Dance Xpressionz and Steel and Ivory, they were back up again. Before playing Everything I Own, Campbell said sarcastically, "In those days we were stupid. We used to play the song to the end. We were so crazy! We actually held the lady and danced! And we listened to the song! Stupid!"
The band played Celebration and many sang along with Oh what a night, after which Campbell remarked, "In those days, we got $150 a night", when they got paid, that is. He added that they had to sing for the ladies to get the girls, but nowadays, the youth say 'people dead' and get girls. "Very strange," he remarked.
After Otis Redding's I've Been Loving You Too Long took the house down, Campbell told some ladies present that in those days, people were romantic but they were too young to have experienced that and grew up in the "coarse time".
And before Fab Five closed with Carry Go Bring Come and Wings of a Dove, he said, "Nowadays, you can be out of key, off-key, tone deaf and you make the money. You have some good singers in Jamaica a dead fi hungry. The radio stations are not giving them a chance."

Owen Blakka Ellis, as he tends to be, was seriously funny, his comments on issues causing laughter, but the opinions and issues were very serious, despite the humour. He said that once performers had names, Ken Boothe, Leroy Sibbles, Dennis Brown. Nowadays, they have descriptions, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Elephant Man.
He went on to speak about the irony of women shaving their eyebrows, then drawing them back with eyeliner, but was soon back on music matters. He said that some performers claim they love women, yet they walk with an entourage of men. "They call it posse, they call it crew. I call it men dating men," Ellis said to hoots of laughter.
In addition, many men nowadays express love in aggressive terms, that "my love for you dark and ignorant! It don't scare the women. They love it. They have a dance named daggering". And he went on to describe it as including "some sharp pelvic thrusts", among other things, to amusement all around.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Police say a woman is recovering at a local hospital after her husband kidnapped and shot her then led them on a chase through several counties.
Deputies say it all began in Hernando County Tuesday when Rudolph Moats abducted his estranged wife, Donna.
Witnesses say he forced her into a car at gunpoint.
Soon after, the woman's daughter says she got a call from her mother saying she had been shot and was in need of help.
But when police got to the area in Brooksville they could not find the couple.
Investigators believe the suspect took Donna Moates across the state and at some point she was shot.
They say he dropped her off at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine then got on I-95 and drove South.
St. Johns County Deputies say they clocked him going speeds of up to 90 mph. Moates eventually crossed into Flagler County where deputies there began their chase.
"We spotted the vehicle on I-95 and we tried to stop the vehicle and the vehicle failed to stop, he got off here at the 289 exit which is Palm Coast Parkway here in Palm Coast, the vehicle headed eastbound on Palm Coast Parkway, came up here to Palm Harbor Parkway where as you can see he wrecked," said Flagler County Deputy Kevin Byrne.
Deputies say the suspect got out and ran but didn't make it far. They searched his car and found a shotgun.
Moates was taken to the hospital then off to jail all while his wife was undergoing surgery at the hospital.
Starting July 1st, employees in Florida can bring their firearms to work if they have a concealed weapons permit.
The new law states that the gun needs to be locked up in the employee's car and not taken inside the place of work.
Guns are still banned from places like schools, prisons, nuclear power plants, or any work place that stores explosives.
