HE findings of a probe into the theft of 500 truckloads of sand from a prime 64-acre property at Coral Spring near Duncans in Trelawny have been sent to the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), the Observer has learnt.

The report was said to have been delivered to the office of Daryl Vaz, the minister without portfolio in the OPM, who had been given the responsibility to ensure that the issue was investigated.

Vaz is expected to return to work this morning after a short vacation and is likely to present the report to Prime Minister Bruce Golding.

Last month, the Observer reported that the theft of the sand had placed in jeopardy a proposed $8-billion beachfront development by Felicitas Limited, a consortium of investors comprising 15 of Jamaica's most successful entrepreneurs who shared a common dream of developing 36 six-star, luxury villas with spa, restaurant, amphitheatre and marina in phase one.

The development was expected to serve as a catalyst for undeveloped Trelawny.

Yesterday, a source close to the investors admitted that the group was still fuming over the theft, as well as the contempt with which they have been treated by persons whom, it is said, the investigation indicated had bought the sand.

"One of the investors called them to discuss the issue and they hung up the phone on him," said the source who opted not to be named.

The source also said that the Felicitas group was less than pleased with the pace of the investigation.

DEBORAH SMITH aborted her first child 19 years ago. At least that is what the records and a receipt for $1,800 show. But, almost two decades after the "painful act", daughter Dominique is alive.

"Her birth was a miracle," Smith beams as both mother and daughter shared their extraordinary story with The Sunday Gleaner.

Smith, now 35, discovered at age 14 that she was pregnant. She knew it was something her mother should not find out about.

Sent to Sunday School and Bible study by her mother, "no visions of hell" could compete with the fear Smith felt inside.

A grade-nine student at John Mills All-Age School in Kingston, Smith admits that her "experimenting" with her boyfriend landed her in trouble.

"I was afraid, mainly because of my mother who grew me up in the right way. She was a nurse and a Christian, ensuring that I went to church." 

Smith's fear made her quickly decide to abort the pregnancy. "I was afraid of her finding out. I did not know what she would do." 

Deborah Smith was her mother's only daughter and the only child left at home. Her two older brothers had already gone away, so a very tight bond existed between mother and daughter. 

"I decided that the only thing to do was to do the abortion and go back to school. I would go on with my life. I had no intention of telling my mother. No one would know," she decided.

At nine weeks into the pregnancy, with money supplied by her boyfriend who - although a student - had funds from a part-time job, she paid for and did the procedure. 

"I was on this narrow bed in a cold room. It was just like doing a Pap smear," she says of the attempt to terminate the pregnancy.

In 20 minutes, she was outside with a prescription and instructions to go home. 

She remembers. "I was bleeding, but not heavily." 

Thinking that she was past the worst, she went back to being a teenager again. But, just a few weeks later, Smith began to experience nausea and "puffiness".

"I was sleeping a lot and I could not understand what was happening to me," she recounts. Instead of her regular menstrual flow, Smith was spotting.

She was still pregnant and "judgement day" came when her mother found out.

With a nurse's practical approach, her mother took her to the doctor and had an ultrasound done, which showed that the pregnancy was healthy and normal.

While her mother's friends suggested an abortion (not knowing that this had already been attempted), she decided that the child was to be born and kept. 

"She was upset and disappointed, but she said, 'We will deal with it ... We will stick it out together'," Smith recalled. Her mother, she said, also told her what to expect. "I was just happy that she was supporting me," Smith said.

A pregnant teenager, Smith recalls her next worst experience, at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital in Kingston. "The nurses commented loudly on my age and absence from school. They heaped scorn on me."

In time, such shame-filled memories were dulled by the loving support she received from her mother, her child's father - who later became her husband - and his parents.

On November 23, 1988, her daughter, Dominique, was born. Smith continued her studies at the Women's Centre, then Dunoon Technical, and finally, the University of the West Indies.

Today, Smith, a customer-service agent in Kingston, is the mother of two daughters and is a member of the Arlene Gardens Gospel Assembly in St Andrew, where her entire family was baptised in June 2000. 

Nineteen years later, her first child has a track record of leadership that has made her mother proud. 

Dominique was a prefect at Mico Practising and Junior High School, and in first form at Wolmer's Girls' School, she was deputy form captain.

Throughout high school, she was a student council representative, becoming a form captain in fifth form. By sixth form, she was president of the Inter-Schools Christian Fellowship.

She was successful in nine subjects at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate level gaining five distinctions and four credits.

Dominique was told about her 'accidental birth' while in lower sixth form in 2006. She remarks that the "stunning tale" has inspired her. 

"It gives me the motivation to work harder and have a purpose here. Whatever I get myself in, I must do to the best of my ability," she told The Sunday Gleaner. 

Dominique has applied to the University of the West Indies to pursue studies in the natural sciences and intends later, to do medicine. She also believes she has a special role in changing lives.

"I just love rapping with young people, and they are always coming to me with their problems," said Dominique. 

She loves singing and is choir director and praise and worship coordinator at church. 

"Everyone looks up to her," boasts Deborah Smith of the daughter whose birth she had attempted to abort.

There are many things that can harm electric devices like computers. From water to power surges to toddlers, computers are apt to be damaged by many different things. Some Houston, Texas residents are finding that a new danger is looking to harm their computers and electronics: ants.

A new species of ant has arrived in Houston and is believed to have come to Texas via a cargo ship that arrived at the Port of Houston. The ants are called crazy rasberry ants. The ants get the odd name from the fact that they tend to move erratically around in search of food rather than moving in orderly lines like typical ants.

A&M doctoral student Jason Meyers says, The population built up so high that typical ant controls simply did no good. Exterminators are trying to get the EPA to allow the use of stronger pesticides to c****at the ant problem.

A 29 year old Jamaican woman, with two drug charges,who was released from a detention centre in Puerto Rico has avoided deportation to her homeland citing fear of being tortured. Judge Irma Lopez-Defillo had initially ordered that Nichole (her middle name), be deported, when the woman checked in with immigration authorities on Thursday, August 7, regarding her order of supervision, but upon hearing stories of her life in Jamaica as a lesbian, the judge also fearing that her sexual orientation would put her in danger if she were to return to Jamaica deferred the order based on the climate of intolerance in Jamaica.

"The general atmosphere in Jamaica is a feeling of no tolerance towards homosexuals in general,...the respondent's life is definitely at risk," the judge said.

Nichole's lawyers plan to file documents so that she can apply for legal residency as the Department of Homeland Security has the authority to deport her to any other country.

She is to report back in three months.

 

The Palisadoes Go-Kart track on Saturday night was the place to be as Renaissance Disco celebrated its 19th Anniversary with a party under the theme; "Flight 19". Renaissance, whose selectors are known for their excellent mixing skills, surely proved themselves at the event by keeping the patrons satisfied as they played hit after hit, keeping the crowd entertained and dancing as they (the patrons) 'broke out' and were 'daggering' on the dance floor.

With a theme like this, expectations for decor were extremely high and they did not disappoint. Red Stripe which is strongly associated with the sound did not fail to make its presence known at the venue. Staff was attired in airline outfits; pilot hats. Effort was put into the details of decor, lighting to set the mood, steps to board the flight.

The unquestioned star of the Opening Ceremony was a little girl who performed "Hymn to the Motherland" in front of the entire world. I remember watching her and thinking how adorable and talented she was, the "poster child for all of China." Well, it turns out that she wasn't as talented as we all thought. It was in fact, a seven year old singing to the whole world on a pre-recorded tape, not the cute, pig-tailed Lin Miaoke (left), whom we all came to know and love according to a report from The Telegraph.

A teenage employee celebrated his birthday by taking a bath in the utility sink at the Burger King in Xenia, Ohio, local station WHIO-TV reported.

Greene County Health Commissioner Mark McDonnell was e-mailed the video that appeared on MySpace.com and is now using it as evidence.
In the video, the employee dumps water on himself using a bucket marked with the words, "sanitary solution." But McDonnell said the sink is used to clean utensils and there is nothing sanitary about what the teenager did.
McDonnell said, "Any bacteria on his skin could have been deposited giving people food poisoning." The person recording the video allegedly told the Burger King manager what was happening, but she continued to count cash.
Officials at the Burger King Corp. were notified of the incident Monday and are cooperating with the health department.
Burger King Corp. released a statement saying, "We have sanitized the sink and have disposed of all other kitchen tools and utensils that were used during the incident. We have also taken appropriate corrective action on the employees that were involved in this video. Additionally, the remaining staff at this restaurant is being retrained in health and sanitation procedures."

NEW YORK - The cost remains high, and a good lawyer is essential. Yet despite complications, the idea of becoming a biological dad with help from a surrogate mother is gaining allure among gay men as the status of "married with children" grows ever more possible.

With same-sex marriage now legal in California even to nonresidents, and Massachusetts extending its 4-year-old gay-marriage policy to out-of-staters, in-wedlock parenting is suddenly a realistic option for gays and lesbians nationwide, even if their home state won't recognize the union.

Fertility clinics and surrogacy programs report increased interest from gay men, while couples who already have children are getting married or considering it to provide more security for those kids.

"We wanted our daughter to know her parents were married that was the big thing for us," said Tommy Starling of Pawley's Island, S.C., who wed his partner of 12 years, Jeff Littlefield, on July 11 in Hollywood.

Among those at the ceremony was their daughter, Carrigan, who was born in California two years ago.

Starling said he and Littlefield had tried previously to adopt a child in South Carolina, but encountered anti-gay hostility and instead opted to become parents through a surrogacy program run by Los Angeles-based Growing Generations. Since 1996, it has matched hundreds of gay men with surrogate mothers who are paid to carry an implanted embryo produced from a donor egg fertilized with the client's sperm.

"Our journey to parenthood was not easy, cheap or fun," Starling and Littlefield wrote in an account of their family. "The result, however, has been the most amazing experience in the world; being called Daddy and Dad by our loving daughter."

For lesbian couples, biological parenthood is usually a far simpler proposition than for gay men, since there's no need for surrogacy and there are various options for becoming pregnant. A lesbian couple faces neither the cost of surrogacy, which can run as high as $150,000, nor the legal complications which call for a carefully negotiated contract with the surrogate mother.

"All the realms involved with men are much more complex," said Gail Taylor, president and founder of Growing Generations.

But Taylor believes the option of marriage will, over time, lead to more biological gay dads.

"For future generations, knowing they can fall in love, get married, have a child absolutely, that will become a way of life more than it is," she said.

Something to prove
Starling, 36, and Littlefield, 52, face the likelihood that their marriage will not be recognized anytime soon in South Carolina, one of 26 states with constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriages.

In contrast, Joe and Brent Taravella, who are raising three children in South Orange, N.J., already have a civil union and are optimistic that New Jersey will soon join California and Massachusetts in legalizing same-sex marriages.

 

"As a couple with kids, you really see the importance of it, trying to get as many protections as you can," Joe Taravella said.

They have a 2-year-old daughter through a surrogacy handled by Growing Generations, and twins born in May 2007 through a surrogacy arranged by a New Jersey lawyer, Melissa Brisman.

"My relatives were screaming with excitement when they found out we were going to be parents," Joe Taravella said. "I think we still have something to prove, to show America we can do a great job with these kids."

As the ceremony got under way with a dramatic, drummed countdown, viewers watching at home and on giant screens inside the Bird's Nest National Stadium watched as a series of giant footprints outlined in fireworks processed gloriously above the city from Tiananmen Square. There is currently a bevy of inaccurate reports being circulated via the media and internet about Jamaican Dancehall superstar Sean Paul being arrested and charged for marijuana possession. However when 876radio.com spoke to sources currently on tour with the artiste they informed us that he did have some run-ins with the law but was never arrested. According to our international correspondent Sean and members of his team were held after they were suspected of marijuana possession at the recently concluded Uppsala Reggae Festival in Sweden. However further checks revealed that after a search was conducted including sniffer dogs being sent to the entertainers hotel room, no illegal contrabands were found and all charges were dismissed. The Smoking of marijuana is illegal in Sweden and is punishable under the laws governing that country. Presently Sean Paul and his team are en route to Tunisia where they will make another stop on their world tour.

According to investigators, a man wearing black clothing, a red bandanna and who was waving a gun burst into the First Merit Bank, located at 7490 Sawmill Rd.

Police said that the robber immediately yelled for everyone to get down on the ground.

As he vigorously waved the gun, the weapon fell to the floor and broke into several pieces. 

According to the FBI, the robber kept yelling at everyone to stay down as he picked the pieces off the ground and put the gun back together again.

Once recomposed, police said that the robber jumped over the teller counter and ordered employees to give him money.  The employees complied, opened their drawers and stepped back as the robber took the money, including a dye-pack, and placed it into his bag.

The robber jumped back over the counter and ran away from the bank, police said.

He is described as black, in his 30s, and is 6 feet 1 inch tall with a medium build.

The robbery was the 36th robbery of the year in the Columbus area, compared to 32 at this time last year, according to the FBI.

ACAPULCO, Mexico - A Mexican woman says she fought a 500-pound lion with a machete near the resort city of Acapulco and scared him away.
Celsa Aleman said she and her 7-year-old niece were riding a donkey Monday along a road when the lion went after the animal's legs.

The 35-year-old woman said she found the courage to fight the lion because she thought it would attack her niece.

She said she hit the animal with a machete until the beast ran away and Aleman and her niece were unharmed.

The state government said in a statement that the lion had escaped from a private zoo owned by a former local congressman. It said the animal killed two dogs and ate a pig before it was sedated and taken back to the zoo

FORMER prime minister and People's National Party (PNP) president P J Patterson says he will not participate in next month's election to determine who should lead the Opposition party.

"I'm exercising my right not to vote," he told the Hanover Homecoming Committee Foundation's grand ball on Saturday night. "You will hear nothing more from me on those elections after tonight ...Persons have entered the starting block, the race is on, so let it be."

Patterson's comments came a day before presidential challenger, Dr Peter Phillips, in a national broadcast, outlined his reasons for seeking the PNP's top job from incumbent Portia Simpson Miller. Phillips, a vice-president of the party, said his decision was influenced by his desire to advance the interests of Jamaicans and a wish to see the PNP "revitalised and renewed".

On Saturday night, Patterson's comments didn't elicit any immediate discussion, probably because he avoided taking sides in the party's 2006 internal election to replace him after he had announced his intention to retire.

In that election, Simpson Miller came out the winner over Phillips, Drs Omar Davies and Karl Blythe.

Expressing hope for a rancour-free voting exercise, Patterson emphasised that his comment Saturday on the issue would be his last.

The court in her home city heard the abuse of her children was co-ordinated via text messages sent by a leader of the Grail Movement cult who was known only as the "Doctor".

Her sister Katerina was also involved.

The abuse trial of the boys mum, another relative and their bogus sister Skrlova who fled and was later found posing as a boy in Norway continues.

Three others also face charges.

Anyway, X17 is hearing that Sean Paul and several other artists were searched by police and arrested for drug possession after performing at the Uppsala Reggae Festival last night.

The cops were really intent on catching the rude boys red handed, too - they even sent police dogs to Sean Paul's room at the First Hotel Linne to check for contraband!

The First Hotel Linne's manager declined to comment on the situation to X17. Calls to Sean Paul's manager have not yet been returned.

A naked 30-year-old Kennewick man was arrested early today for allegedly fondling himself while following a garbage truck.

Kennewick police were called at 7:15 a.m. to an apartment complex at 1138 W. 10th Ave., after a Waste Management driver reported seeing a naked man outside, Sgt. Brian Swartswalter said.

The man, later identified as Johnathon Cecil Foster, then went into a garage, put on some white shorts and followed the garbage truck while fondling himself, Swartswalter said. Foster also was reportedly seen urinating in public.

Officers found Foster, who had ran away, and caught him trying to hide near one of the buildings, Swartswalter said.

Foster said he had been in an apartment and had gone outside to drink some alcohol and smoke, Swartswalter said. He told police he then realized he locked himself out and walked over urinated just as the garbage truck pulled up, Swartswalter said.

Foster claimed he had his shorts on the whole time and just dropped them down while relieving himself.

He said he followed the garbage truck because he was upset that the driver was looking at him, Swartswalter said.

Foster was arrested and booked into the Benton County jail on suspicion of lewd conduct and urinating in public.

The German music rights holders association GEMA has expanded its fight against one click hosters like Megaupload and Rapidshare by targeting a new breed of intermediaries: File spreading engines, also called spreaders, are websites that make it possible to upload a file on multiple sites at the same time.

GEMA was able to force Shareonall.com to shut down this weekend, and is now targeting Hubupload.com and Datennschleuder.cc. It also took Xirror.com to court in June and was able to get a preliminary injunction against the site which is now offline as well. GEMA celebrated the shut-down of the site as a proof that it is taking "forceful actions" against file spreading engines.

Diva of the Dancehall, Latifa Brown a.k.a Tifa has set a blazing trail all across Europe.  Over the last three weeks, this dancehall star has been touring across Europe, and has already had performances in Austria and Germany, with upcoming performances in Italy, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland and Berlin.    Tifa and Ward 21 performed to over 40,000 screaming fans in Wuppertal, Germany who stayed in the pouring rain just see these stars in action. Is Criss Angel Mind Freak real ?

After almost two years in prison, New Yorker Tremayne Durham could stand it no longer. His craving for a decent bit of nosh was so intense that he agreed to pay a high price - a life sentence.

Durham, 33, struck a plea bargain last month in which he was guaranteed a meal of KFC chicken, Popeye's chicken, mashed potato, coleslaw, carrot cake and ice cream - in return for pleading guilty to murder.

As part of the deal, and after being handed a life sentence this week in court in Portland, Oregon, Durham will also get a second feast, with an Italian theme of calzone, lasagne, pizza and ice cream.

The judge, Eric Bergstrom, is understood to have accepted the bargain because it would save the state of Oregon thousands of dollars in staging a trial and possible subsequent appeals.

The murder happened in June 2006 as a revenge killing.

Durham travelled from New York city across the country to confront an Oregon company from whom he had ordered a truck costing $18,000. He had been intending to enter the ice cream business, but when he changed his mind the company refused to give him a refund on the truck.

In a rage he intended to collar the owner of the truck company but instead came across a former company employee, 29-year-old Adam Calbreath, and shot him dead.
Durham will now serve 30 years behind bars before any chance of parole and the chance for another KFC feast.

MEXICO CITY, Mexico - HIV-infected Jamaicans are among the many immigrants languishing for months in United States detention centres without proper medical care, and when they are deported, they arrive without even a day's supply of medication or any medical records to continue treatment, according to international rights group, Human Rights Watch.


The information was presented in a report titled 'Chronic Indifference' which was delivered here at the International AIDS Society (IAS) International AIDS Conference.



The report dealt with the troubling issue of detained immigrants dying when their health deteriorated due to lack of appropriate medical care.
Ian Mcknight, board chair of Jamaica AIDS Support for Life (JASL), confirmed the issues highlighted in the report, telling conference delegates that his organisation has dealt with many such cases.

"Over the years we have seen a steady flow of HIV persons being sent back to Jamaica and most come without even another day's supply of medication or medical records," he later told the Sunday Observer.

In those cases, he said, JASL have had to quickly make assessments about drugs, some of which are not the same as the deportees would have access to in the US.

He said JASL were forced to deal with this problem when infected persons, who were deported, started showing up on their doorsteps, some after wandering the streets for days before they are directed there.

McKnight said a 42-year-old infected woman who lived in the US since she was two years old, was sent back to Jamaica where, without any family connections, she begged for food on the streets for days, afraid to disclose her HIV status.

The situation is even more challenging, as Mcknight said there are no funds in place to work with 'deportees' since most of the donor countries are where they are coming from.

McKnight said his JASL have had discussions with the Government aimed at establishing a policy for dealing with persons deported in general as well as those who are infected.

"Until that comes on stream, there will be gaps from being sent home to services they will access," he said.

Although the Ministry of Justice records the number of persons deported, there is no breakdown of how many are HIV-infected, since people are afraid to disclose their status.

Dr Kevin Harvey, head of the National HIV/STI Programme, admitted that it is a challenge for HIV-infected persons who are deported, but said this does not happen in all cases.

He said Canada has been very consistent in notifying them of deportees' HIV status.

The United Kingdom is said to also have a better tracking system.
In other cases, said Dr Harvey, Jamaica has most of the medication available in these countries, to continue treatment.

"Most people who come back know the medication they are on, so that helps," he said.

In the meantime, Rebecca Schleifer of Human Rights Watch accused the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of failing to collect basic information to monitor infected immigrant detainees. She also alleged that the DHS has sub-standard policies and procedures for ensuring appropriate care, and inadequately supervises the care provided.

"The consequence of this wilful indifference is poor care, untreated infection, increased risk of resistance to HIV medications, and even death," she said.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which outsources much of its immigration detention to local jails and facilities across the US, also failed, she said, to deliver ARVs regimen in a consistent manner, creating risk of drug resistance for the detainees. Schleifer also alleged that the ICE does not monitor the viral load, which, along with the delivery of an ARV regimen, is key to effective treatment of the disease.

The US has nearly 30,000 immigrants in federal detention centres, privately run prisons and county jails.

The ICE, which is the enforcement unit of the DHS, incarcerates not only undocumented persons but legal permanent residents, asylum seekers, families and unaccompanied children.

While the average length of detention is still unclear, an ICE report in 2006 said detainees from developing countries are held for an average of 89 days.

The report cited several testimonials.

Peter (not his real name) a 43-year-old Jamaican man detained at Hampton Road regional jail in Portsmouth, Virginia, said "sometimes I will get no medication at all, other times I will get one or two out of three."

Diane, a 41-year-old Trinidadian woman detained at Monmouth County Correctional Institution in Freehold, New Jersey, said, "I have no idea what my T cells are, or how I am doing with this virus".

Juan, a 45-year-old man from Aruba, served a sentence in federal prison before he was transferred into ICE custody to be deported.

"When I was deported they told me they would give me a two-week supply of my medication, but when it came time to get on the plane they could not locate them so I was deported without any meds," he said.

Charles, a Jamaican who migrated to Brooklyn, left detention centre with full blown AIDS after his health deteriorated there. Now he is resistant to 13 primary ARVs, which restricts his treatment options, even in the US.

Schleifer said there have been more than 80 deaths in these facilities since 2002. Those do not include the people who died shortly after being released.

SNELLVILLE, Ga. -- So much for spaghetti suppers: The First Baptist Church of Snellville is fueling its membership drive with a sign in front of its sprawling campus proclaiming "Free Gasoline."
There's a catch, of course. The offer is a not a giveaway. Instead, each time newcomers or members attend a church event during a Sunday-to-Wednesday revival they get a pink raffle ticket for a chance to win one of two $500 gas cards.
"We don't know how far it will go with these soaring prices," said Rusty Newman, the church's senior pastor. "But it may make someone's night."
Newman's congregation boasts roughly 9,000 members, but only about 2,500 regularly attend Sunday services.
The church, like others, has long relied on special dinners and giveaways to draw in members, but elders wanted something a little more timely for this latest pitch.
They set up a sign advertising the offer outside the church's parking lot on a busy road near downtown Snellville, a traffic-clogged suburb northeast of Atlanta.
"How can we capture those people?" asked James Lee, the church's minister to seniors, who came up with the idea. "We're strong in door-to-door evangelism, but there's no way to reach them all."
Soon the calls came flooding in. Church staffer Lisa Gauthier said she's handled dozens of them each day, some from as far afield as Seattle. Radio show hosts in Oregon caught wind of the idea and invited Newman on air. So many inquiries came pouring in that Newman had to order a new phone line and dedicate a receptionist to answering each one.
Newman views it as a service to the community, and he's looked to the Bible for his endorsement. One passage he mentions to support his idea involves Jesus feeding 5,000 with a few loaves of bread and a couple of fish.
"Some pastors have questioned our motives," Newman said. "If it was just to get people in the building, it would be wrong. But we want to meet someone's physical need and eternal spiritual needs."

More than 1,000 hacked sites serving up phony update; Adobe issues warning


August 6, 2008 (Computerworld) More than a thousand hacked Web sites are serving up fake Flash Player software to users duped into clicking on links in mail that's part of a massive spam attack masquerading as CNN.com news notifications, security researchers said today.

The bogus messages, which claim to be from the CNN.com news Web site, include links to what are supposedly the day's Top 10 news stories and Top 10 news video clips from the cable network. Clicking on any of those links, however, brings up a dialog that says an incorrect version of Flash Player has been detected and that tells users they needed to update to a newer edition, said Sam Masiello, vice president of information security at Denver-based security company MX Logic Inc.

One distinguishing feature of the attack, Masiello added, is the endless loop it uses to frustrate victims. If user clicks "Cancel" in the dialog that prompts for an update, another pop-up appears, said Masiello, that tells the victim that they have to download it to view the video. Clicking "Cancel" there returns the user to the first dialog.

"It puts you in this perpetual loop, so your only options are to kill your browser [session] or be browbeaten into installing it," said Masiello.

MX Logic has detected more than 160 million spam messages in the fake CNN.com attack in the past 48 hours, he said. "It's not slowed down at all," Masiello said.

Yesterday, Bulgarian security researcher Dancho Danchev reported finding more than 1,000 hacked sites hosting the fake Flash Player update.

Hackers are getting brazen and apparently aren't afraid to disclose the addresses of the sites they've compromised by embedding them in the spam they're spreading, he said. "Malicious attackers have been building so much confidence in this risk-forwarding process of hosting their campaigns, that they would start actively spamming the links residing within low-profile legitimate sites across the Web," Danchev said in a blog post on Tuesday.

Adobe Systems Inc. is aware of the malware posing as its Flash Player, and on Monday it warned users to ignore any updates that didn't originate on its own servers. "Do not download Flash Player from a site other than Adobe.com," said David Lenoe, the company's product security program manager, in an entry on Adobe Product Security Incident Response Team's PSIRT blog. "This goes for any piece of software (Reader, Windows Media Player, QuickTime, etc.) -- if you get a notice to update, it's not a bad idea to go directly to the site of the software vendor and download the update directly from the source. If the download is from an unfamiliar URL or an IP address, you should be suspicious."

People who approved the download of the bogus flash.exe file instead received a Trojan horse -- identified by multiple names, including Cbeplay.a -- that in turn "phones home" to a malicious server to grab and install additional malware, said Danchev.

Masiello said MX Logic is still investigating, and it has not been able to pin down what malware -- other than the fake Flash Player -- was actually installed on victims' PCs.

Malware-serving menace rolls on


August 8, 2008 (Computerworld) The massive attack that has infected PCs by tricking users into clicking links in fake messages from CNN.com shows little sign of ending soon, security researchers said Friday.

According to MX Logic Inc., spam posing as CNN.com Top 10 lists peaked at close to 11 million messages per hour early Thursday, but remained at high volumes throughout the day Friday. The Colorado security vendor said it had been tracking an average of 8 million messages per hour since midnight.

MX Logic's vice president of information security, Sam Masiello, called the trend "a very slow, but steady decline" from the 11 a.m. Mountain Time peak the day before.

Masiello also said that the spam has changed since attacks were first launched on Tuesday. "We've also seen several morphs of this spam over the past couple of days," he said in an entry posted on the MX Logic blog Friday. Where the messages once trumpeted "CNN.com Daily Top 10" in the subject heading and linked to a single filename on malware-hosting sites, now the spam sports a subject reading "CNN Alerts: My Custom Alert" and uses a variety of filenames in the malicious URL.

"This is likely in response to all of the media attention and awareness that has been brought up over the past couple of days," Masiello speculated.

Also on Friday, Websense Inc. reported that its researchers had seen the attack mutating, with the spam subject heading not only touting "CNN Alerts: My Custom Alert," but also using legitimate news stories culled from CNN to make the messages more convincing.

Users who clicked on the "FULL STORY" link in the message were redirected to a fake CNN site, where they were told they needed to download an update to Flash Player, Adobe System Inc.'s popular Internet media player, to view a video clip from CNN.

Websense also said it had spotted traces of the campaign in blog spam.

If users agreed to download the bogus Flash update, they were trapped in an endless loop, where clicking "Cancel" in the initial dialog produced a second pop-up. Clicking "Cancel" there returned the user to the first pop-up. The only options at that point were for users to shut down the browser or give in and install the malware.

MX Logic added that it had seen the URLs in the spam lead to legitimate domains that had probably been compromised, and named a U.K.-based roofing company as an example.

Earlier this week, Bulgarian security researcher Dancho Danchev had found more than 1,000 compromised domains being used to serve up the fake Flash. In a follow-up e-mail, Danchev said that in most cases, he couldn't find any characteristics shared by the hacked sites, such as all being hosted by a single Internet service provider.

"My assumption is that they took the time and effort to do some reconnaissance of sites which are vulnerable to remote file inclusion, or other type of remotely exploitable flaw within their Web applications that would allow someone to locally host all the malicious files," Danchev said. "I wouldn't be surprised if I find out that someone has basically went through all keylogged Cpanel passwords he obtained through his botnet, or through the access to a botnet that he temporarily rented."

Cpanel, a popular server control panel program, has been targeted by password thieves in the past because of the access those passwords provide to sites
