LOS ANGELES A court has put a higher value on being Britney Spears' father this year: about $75 an hour.

For helping his daughter through her turbulent period, Jamie Spears on Monday was awarded an additional $51,000 payout, reflecting an increase in his monthly payments since he took over his 27-year-old daughter's affairs in February.

Jamie Spears had been receiving $10,000 a month for his work, but Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz increased that amount to approximately $16,000 per month and agreed to give him backpay.

He was also granted an additional $1,200 monthly payment so he can maintain and office, which Goetz said was justified by his work getting his daughter's personal life and music career back on track.

December 24, 2008. An ALL OUT war appears to have just broke out in New York between rapper Jim Jones and rival Jay Z. And Jim Jones won the first battle.

For weeks now popular NYC based rapper Jim Jones has been taking verbal swipes against Jay Z. But MediaTakeOut.com EXCLUSIVELY learned that on Monday, things went from verbal to physical and unfortunately R&B singer Ne-Yo got caught up in it.

Things came to a head on Monday at NYCs ultra-luxurious Louis Vuitton store on Fifth Avenue. MediaTakeOut.com EXCLUSIVELY learned that Jim Jones and a group of men ran into Jay Zs best friend Tyran "Ty Ty" Smith and R&B singer Ne-Yo while doing some Christmas shopping.

Then, according to a witness who spoke EXCLUSIVELY to MediaTakeOut.com, one of Jimmys pals made a disparaging comment about Jay Z to Ty Ty. And when the 5 foot 4 Ty Ty responded things really popped off.

The insider explained, It was total chaos Ty Ty got stomped out right there in the store I though they were going to kill him. And when Ne-Yo tried to break it up, he got stomped too someone had their foot on Ne-Yos neck!!!

No word on the extent of injuries that either man faced. But our source claims that neither appeared to suffer serious injuries.

Representatives for Jay Z and Jim Jones were not available for comment at the time of publication.

AUBURN, Maine (AP) A Maine man found a wallet stuffed with cash on the floor in a home improvement store. Two days later, it found a loaded money bag in the same store. Gil Steward was shopping Tuesday at The Home Depot in Auburn when he spied the wallet, which was stuffed with nearly $1,000 in $100 bills. He returned it to The Home Depot store's service counter, and it was returned to a very grateful owner.

On Thursday, same hour and same store, Steward saw a green money bag on the floor. Again, it was returned to its rightful owner.

His wife, Dee, said her husband thinks he's being tested. As for Steward, he said he plans to play the lottery this weekend.

Michael Jackson -- Alpha Male?

1221_michael_jackson_v3.jpgMichael may be in desperate need of a lung transplant, according to Ian Halperin, author of a new M.J. bio.

Halperin claims Jacko suffers from a rare genetic disorder known as Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, which has led to emphysema and gastrointestinal bleeding.

Halperin told In Touch Michael can barely speak and is nearly blind in his left eye.

On November 4, 2007 at University Hospital, Hamilton County, Cincinnati, an 11 year old gave birth to a baby girl.

The troubling part of this tale of children having children is that the newborn's DNA matched that of her 11 year old mother's "step-dad." This new 'child mom' was impregnated by her own mother's boyfriend when she was only age 10.

An intense investigation was set off following the baby's birth, that in itself was shocking to the Department of Job and Family Services, because the child's mother was so young.

On Wednesday, prosecutors were in Hamilton County Dependency Court to
discuss the future of both children at what is called a status session
where an update on both mother and baby was disclosed.

While court was in session, Lockland police were in Columbus talking to Michael Chaffer, the 40 year old, whose DNA matches that of the newborn. In jail for an unrelated matter, Chaffer now faces charges for impregnating and sexually molesting a girl under the age of 13, Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor, Lee Slocum said.

"Unfortunately sexual abuse is pretty common in the cases we see," JFS Director, Moira Wier said, "But it is unusual and extremely sad to see a case where a 10 year old becomes pregnant." She added, "This is an example of why everyone in communities need to be extremely vigilant about watching for the signs of abuse and [notifying authorities.]"

The University Hospital notified JFS of the birth because the mother was so young. The baby and her 11 year old mom were allowed to remain at home while the JFS investigated, but there was a condition; that no men be in the home. However, despite this order, on January 4 Chaffer was found in the home by a social worker and found in violation of the JFS order. He was arrested on a charge of obstruction of official business, as he got in the way of police entering the home.

JFS promptly removed both infant and her adolescent mother from the home.

Dressed in a T-shirt hoody, jeans and sporting a ponytail, the new mom spoke about school, music and Disney video games as she sat beside her mom waiting for the hearing to begin. As prosecutors chatted about the possibilities of her losing her baby, the 11 year old wiped away tears from her eyes.

Hamilton court prosecutors want a court designation that the 11 year old girl was abused. They allege the mother did not care for her daughter by allowing Chaffer near her. Prosecutors also argued and won for the infant to be taken from her young mom because they say a sixth grade student is too young to care for a baby.

The baby is now in foster care, while her child-mom is being taken care of by relatives. Her mother is not allowed to see the baby and can only see her daughter when supervised by social workers.

LOS ANGELES - Michael Jackson sang, Billie Jean is not my lover, in his massive 1983 hit, but a woman who says shes Billie Jean Jackson claims otherwise.

According to court documents obtained by Access Hollywood, Billie Jean Jackson, who is believed to be Lavon Powlis, claims shes married to Michael and is seeking joint custody of his youngest child, 6-year-old Blanket, whose birth name is Prince Michael II. The woman claims she is Blankets birth mother.

Billie Jean is suing the singer for 1 billion dollars in support of Blanket.

This is not Michaels first encounter with Billie Jean Jackson. According to the Associated Press, in 1987, she filed a $150 million paternity lawsuit against the singer.

She claimed Michael had fathered three of her children and would not pay child support. A rep for the pop singer at the time called the claims ridiculous and preposterous. The suit was dismissed (apparently, the kids were not his sons).

In March of 2008, the 60-year-old was arrested by Santa Barbara County sheriffs deputies for trespassing on Michaels Neverland Ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley.

In the current lawsuit, the papers state that the complaint is filed because she always is arrested at the home of her husband, Michael J. Jackson.

The lawsuit comes in a wave of bizarre and unsettling news for Michael.

According to a report, a Jackson biographer claims Michael needs a lung transplant stemming from a rare genetic disorder, which has led to emphysema and gastrointestinal bleeding. He reportedly can barely speak and is nearly blind in his left eye. Jackson's camp has denied these reports.

In addition to his legal and health troubles, the singer continues to relocate. Michael has lived around the world, including the Middle East nation of Bahrain, but now he has reportedly settled again in Southern California, this time in a wealthy Bel-Air neighborhood.

It has been reported that hes renting a massive seven-bedroom, 13-bathroom mansion for $100,000 dollars a month.

Cops found more guns and ammo in Plaxico Burress' house yesterday, according to the NY Post, and it could mean even more legal issues for the Giant.

The popo raided Plax's Jersey house, the paper is reporting, and the NYPD and officials from the Manhattan DA's office went in to find a handgun, a rifle, and ammo for three other guns. They also say cops took *lo**y black jeans and sneakers which are going to be part of the DA's investigation into the case.

Also found, but not seized: A suitcase full of money, according to the NY Post. Burress' lawyer says he thinks the rifle, at least, was registered.

FAKE CASH FLOODS TOWN

Police in downtown, Kingston, said they are extremely concerned about the circulation of counterfeit notes in the commercial district.

Special Inspector Joseph Donaldson of the Darling Street police, said based on police intelligence it is suspected that a group of persons are responsible for an upsurge in the number of the fake notes discovered over the past three weeks.

"A man told us that another man was trying to recruit him to buy goods with some fake notes, had about 20 of them," the Special Inspector explained to THE STAR recently.

SIMILAR CONCERN

Checks by THE STAR also found that shoppers and vendors within the area share a concern similar to that of the police.

"Yea man dem a gwaan bad inna di Christmas ya, mi haffi a keep mi eye dem open wide wide...Wa day ya dem ketch mi wid bout four different one hundred dolla," vendor Iris Graham, 43, said.

Another vendor Lloyd Hunt said, "More time mi woulda tek all a five bills (a $500 note) and jus pocket it, mi cyaa run dem risk deh now cause a whole heap a people a get trick, when mi get dem mi look pon dem all 50 different time."

One shopper who overheard the conversation with Hunt then added, "Afta a nuh di seller dem alone a get trick, we di buyers dem get ketch more time to..Mi know quite a few people whe get ketch..Wi haffi a get extra careful cause it look like a nuff fake money deh ya."

As such, the police are urging persons to be on the lookout for notes bearing the serial numbers; F2752256, Fb904049 and LL049145.

The first serial number was found on fake $500 notes while the other two were seen on fake $1000 notes.

A Saudi court has rejected a plea to divorce an eight-year-old girl married off by her father to a man who is 58, saying the case should wait until the girl reaches puberty.

The divorce plea was filed in August by the girl's divorced mother with a court at Unayzah, 135 miles north of Riyadh just after the marriage contract was signed by the father and the groom.

Lawyer Abdullar Jtili said:"The judge has dismissed the plea, filed by the mother, because she does not have the right to file such a case, and ordered that the plea should be filed by the girl herself when she reaches puberty."

Beenie & D'Angels At It Again

February 4, 2008

It seems there is no end to the drama between Beenie Man and his estranged wife D'Angel, just yesterday evening at the first annual Youth View Awards held at the Courtleigh Auditorium in New Kingston a battle of subliminal verbal insults was played out between the two.

876radio.com was in the house to witness the unfolding, first up was Beenie Man who hit the stage at approximately 10:30pm very dapperly dressed in a multi-coloured suit capped with a mustard coloured felt hat. He delivered a very energetic set reeling out hit after hit and even called out upcoming singer Barbee to do a combination to "Give it Up" on Mario C's, Revenge Riddim, he then turned and looked at Barbee and said "No one Can Stop Us.....". Can you say endless laughter.

After Barbee exited the stage, Beenie showed why he is the king of the dancehall when he asked the audience "Can I go home now, can I leave please" this was greeting by a resounding "NO" at which point he dropped the microphone and started to tap dance. By this time the crowd was in a frenzy, He then asked Kurt Riley to cut the music so he could deejay a new tune for his fans here are a few lines.

"Why dem form Alliance fi sen mi inna oblivion,
Me a di grammy man, have the most number one
di girls dem sugar man.........."

"Mi wife gimme bun wid annoda man,
so mi just find annoda gyal.."

The laughter and cheers were almost deafening when he utters the lines about his wife's alleged infidelity and D'Angel whose face looked anything but happy, started waving her arms signifying she never committed the act (see pictures below). But sweet revenge came about half an hour later when D'Angel copped the award for 'Most Fashionable Female Celebrity' and was asked by acclaimed American actress Essence Atkins to show her how to struts the catwalk and indeed she did, much to the delight of the crowd.

After giving her speech and paying homage to her son Marco Dean whom she titled "The Love of Her Life" before looking in the direction of Beenie and Barbee who were seated together on the right wing of the auditorium and said "Big up mi real fans dem ..GOD over Devil ....AnSO!" and exited the stage looking like a true diva.

capitol-building-picture_edit.jpgA white- Jewish congressman, who is up for re-election this year and an advocate for the US apologizing to minority groups for past mistreatments, and a sponsor for Memphis blacks, is pleased as the US government will be taking a vote in the House of Representatives to offer a formal apology to the black Americans for "enslavement and racial segregation".

The US has officially recognized that "lingering consequences" from slavery and segregation continue to haunt black Americans, as they embrace their first black presidential nominee, Barack Obama.

The US government has apologized for the abuse of ethnic minorities twice in the past: in 1988 they apologized to the Japanese Americans for WW11 and the Hawaiians in 1993.

Once the apology is passed, the Senate will need to approve it before George Bush can sign the measure into law.

The apology states; "An apology for centuries of brutal dehumanization and injustices cannot erase the past, but confession of the wrongs committed can speed racial healing and reconciliation and help Americans confront the ghost of their past."

Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Florida, North Carolina and Alabama states have each approved apologies for slavery.

SINGAPORE (Reuters Life!) It really does pay to be a doctor, with an international survey showing the medical profession is the most trusted, among the most admired and includes the most eligible marriage partners.

By contrast, actors and musicians, along with journalists and advertisers, were among professionals that people trusted the least, and were also least likely to choose a partner from, according to a survey by Synovate, the market research arm of Aegis Group plc.

"Much of who we are is tied up in what we do in the hours from nine to five, and often way beyond," a Synovate statement said.

"Asking someone what they do for a living is often the first question you ask them; right after 'what's your name?'."

The survey polled about 5,500 respondents in Brazil, Canada, China, France, Malaysia, South Africa and the United States.

It asked people what makes for an admirable job, which professions they trust or do not, who is overpaid, and which profession they would prefer to marry.

Sixteen percent nominated doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals as their preferred marriage partners, higher than any other profession.

Other eligible -- and admired -- professions were education, at 14 percent, and science and technology, at 10 percent.

Educators and doctors were also voted the most trusted by an overwhelming 86 and 87 percent, followed by homemakers and those in science and technology.

We take them with us to the dinner table, the bedroom, even the bathroom stall. But in recent years, some of us have started taking our beloved cell phones someplace really startling: the grave.

It seems that everyone under 40 who dies takes their cell phone with them, says Noelle Potvin, family service counselor for Hollywood Forever, a funeral home and cemetery in Hollywood, Calif. Its a trend with BlackBerrys, too. We even had one guy who was buried with his Game Boy.

Anecdotal evidence suggests being buried with a favorite tech device is on the upswing. The Future Laboratory, a London-based think tank, has commented on the behavior, noting it in places like the United Kingdom, Australia and South Africa. But experts are seeing it happen in the United States as well.

Ed Defort, publisher and editorial director for American Funeral Director magazine, says it's a definite trend.

Ive even heard of cases where people are being buried with their iPod. Or one guy who was prepared for his viewing with his Bluetooth (headset) in his ear.

But its the cell phone, in particular, that seems to be the burial gadget of choice.

An assault case against Neville Davis was yesterday thrown out of the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court after the complainant expressed her desire to not pursue the matter any further.

Allegations in the case are the the accused went to the shop of the complainant, Alga Farquharson, his ex-girlfriend, to purchase goods. While there, both parties got into a fight during which blows were exchanged.

Davis was subsequently arrested and charged. Before the matter was dismissed, the complainant sought to clear the air, stating that she only bit the accused because he hit her.

The accused man's attorney said that both parties were apologetic about the situation and wanted to amicably move forward. The lawyer related that the relationship between both had ended earlier this year before the incident occurred.

After a two-year relationship, major label Warner Music Group has moved to temporarily terminate its partnership with video sharing site YouTube.

A statement from the record company said, "We simply cannot accept terms that fail to appropriately and fairly compensate recording artists, songwriters, labels and publishers for the value they provide."

According to the YouTube Team, "Sometimes, if we can't reach acceptable business terms, we must part ways with successful partners. For example, you may notice videos that contain music owned by Warner Music Group being blocked from the site. Don't worry - if you receive a takedown notification, you will have a couple of options to choose from in order to keep your original video creations up."

In Warner's fourth quarter earnings call at the end of November, the company reported a four percent decline in revenue for fiscal year 2008, while its digital revenue increased to 20% of the company's total. Approximately 65% of WMG's digital revenue is generated in the United States.

Recent comScore figures show that YouTube is not simply a video site any more, but it handles more search queries than both Yahoo and MSN/Windows Live Search. In November, Yahoo received 2.6 billion search queries, and Microsoft's sites received 1.05 billion.

Youtube received 2.8 billion queries in November, and figures from Nielsen Online's VideoCensus show that the site had 82 million unique viewers in October, streaming 5.08 billion videos. Traffic on the Google-owned video site is soaring, but a Warner Music source has been quoted as calling the payouts "staggeringly low" despite such heavy traffic.

DENVER It was a miracle that no one was killed when an airliner veered sharply off a runway during takeoff, burst into flames and nearly broke apart, firefighters said Sunday.

There was no official word on the possible cause of the crash of Continental Flight 1404 at Denver International Airport, which injured 38 people. Flight data and c**kpit voice recorders were recovered and appeared to be in good condition, the National Transportation Safety Board said Sunday.

The weather was clear but cold when the plane attempted to take off for Houston around 6:20 p.m. Saturday. Winds at the airport were 31 mph, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor.

"No other aircraft opted against taking off due to wind" before Flight 1404 tried to lift off, Gregor said.

The entire right side of the Boeing 737-500 was burned in the Saturday evening accident, and melted plastic from overhead compartments dripped onto the seats. Investigators said the plane's left engine was ripped away along with all the landing gear.

"It was a miracle ... that everybody survived the impact and the fire," said Bill Davis, an assistant Denver fire chief assigned to the airport. "It was just amazing."

A crack encircled much of the fuselage near the trailing edge of the wings, Davis said.

Davis, one of the firefighters who rushed to the scene, said the plane came to a rest about 200 yards from one of the airport's four fire stations. Passengers walked out of the ravine in 24-degree cold and crowded inside the station, he said.

The 110 passengers and five crew members left the plane on emergency slides, officials said.

Passenger Emily Pellegrini told The Denver Post that as the plane headed down the runway, "It was bumpy, then it was bumpier, then it wasn't bumpy."

Gabriel Trejos told KUSA-TV in Denver that the plane buckled toward its middle and that the seats felt like they were closing in on him, his pregnant wife and his 13-month-old son, who was on his lap. His knees were bruised from the seat in front of him.

Maria Trejos told KUSA that there was an explosion and that the right side of the plane, where they were sitting, became engulfed in flames. The family used an emergency exit and slid down the wing of the jet to the ground.

The injuries included broken bones, but Robert Sumwalt, an NTSB member, didn't know whether they were caused by the impact or the evacuation. Two people were initially listed in critical condition at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver but were upgraded Sunday, one to serious and one to fair, spokeswoman Tonya Ewers said.

Many passengers from the flight arrived in Houston, its original destination, on Sunday afternoon, some clearly injured, the Houston Chronicle reported online Sunday.

The gate where relatives waited at Bush Intercontinental Airport was blocked off from the rest of the terminal. One woman limped off the flight with red-rimmed eyes; another was in a wheelchair, wearing a neck brace, the newspaper reported.

A young boy was taken by stretcher straight to an elevator.

The plane veered off course about 2,000 feet from the end of the runway and did not appear to have gotten airborne, city aviation manager Kim Day said.

Investigators said Sunday evening that work would start again at daybreak. Sumwalt said the damaged plane would remain for several days in the 40-foot-deep ravine where it landed. That runway will remain closed during the investigation, he said.

The ravine in which the plane came to rest sits between runways. Flat land is rare on the plains abutting the Rocky Mountains near Denver, and the airport was built on gently rolling country. The runways are elevated so rain and snow will drain away.

Jim Proulx, a Boeing spokesman, said the company was supporting the NTSB investigation. He declined to comment on whether Boeing had any indication of possible problems with the 737-500 jetliner.

Larry Kellner, Continental's chairman and chief executive officer, said his airline was doing all it could for the passengers, crew and their families.

"We will also do whatever we can to learn the cause of this accident so that we can prevent a recurrence at Continental or at any other airline," he said.

NEW YORK The epic election that made Barack Obama the first African-American president was the top news story of 2008 followed closely by the economic meltdown that will test his leadership, according to U.S. editors and news directors voting in The Associated Press' annual poll.

The campaign, with subplots emerging throughout the year, received 100 first-place votes out of 155 ballots cast for the top 10 stories. Two other political sagas the history-making candidacies of Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sarah Palin also made the list.

The vast economic crisis, plunging the U.S. into recession and ravaging many business sectors worldwide, was the No. 2 story, receiving 49 first-place votes. The precipitous rise and fall of oil prices was No. 3.

The top story of 2007 was the massacre of 32 people at Virginia Tech University by a mentally disturbed student gunman.

Here are 2008's top 10 stories, as voted by AP members:

_1. U.S. ELECTION: Obama emerged from Election Night as a decisive victor and a symbol for the world of America's democratic promise. But he reached that point only after a grueling battle with Clinton for the Democratic nomination and then an often-nasty showdown with the McCain/Palin ticket in the run-up to the election.

_2. ECONOMIC MELTDOWN: The bad news kept coming collapses of Wall Street giants; huge stock market losses; plummeting home prices and a surge of foreclosures; desperate times for U.S. automakers. It added up to the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, and will cost the federal government well over $1 trillion in various rescue and stimulus packages.

_3. OIL PRICES: The global economic angst produced hyper-volatile energy markets. The price of crude soared as high as $150 a barrel in July before crashing to $33 this month. In the U.S., the average price for a gallon of regular gas peaked at $4.11, then plunged below $1.70.

_4. IRAQ: The much-debated "surge" of U.S. troops helped reduce violence after more than five years of war, but Iraq is still buffeted daily by b****ings, ambushes, kidnappings and political uncertainty. A newly ratified U.S.-Iraqi security agreement sets a timetable for U.S. troop withdrawal by 2012.

_5. BEIJING OLYMPICS: China hosted the Olympics for first time, drawing praise for logistical mastery and condemnation for heavy-handed security measures. The games themselves were rated a success, highlighted by the record-shattering performances of swimmer Michael Phelps and sprinter Usain Bolt.

_6. CHINESE EARTHQUAKE: A huge quake in May killed 70,000 people in Sichuan province and left 5 million homeless. Many thousands of children were among the victims authorities said about 7,000 classrooms were destroyed in shoddily built schools.

_7. SARAH PALIN: Few Americans outside Alaska knew much about its governor when Republican John McCain picked her as his running mate. That changed rapidly. To her conservative admirers, she was a feisty, refreshing change from most politicians; to her critics, she was in over her head, and worthy of all the lampooning she endured.

_8. MUMBAI TERRORISM: Ten attackers allegedly sponsored by a Pakistan-based Islamic group terrorized India's financial capital in November, killing 164 people in coordinated attacks on hotels, markets and a train station. India's perennially uneasy relations with Pakistan were badly strained.

_9. HILLARY CLINTON: She didn't win, but Clinton came closer than any other woman in U.S. history to becoming a major party's presidential nominee. Her determined primary campaign, waged vigorously even when it seemed a lost cause, inspired millions of women across the country and helped persuade Obama to choose her as secretary of state.

_10. RUSSIA-GEORGIA WAR: The two nations waged a five-day war in August ignited by a Georgian artillery barrage on the breakaway region of South Ossetia. Russia responded with a drive deep into Georgian territory, causing severe economic damage and aggravating already troubled Russia-US relations.

Stories that almost made the Top 10 included Cyclone Nargis, which killed more than 84,000 people in Myanmar; Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, which wreaked deadly damage in the Caribbean and on the U.S. Gulf Coast; and the seesaw fate of same-sex marriage in California, where a court ruling approving it was later overturned by a ballot measure.

Several write-in votes were cast for two developments that occurred too late to be included on the AP ballot the indictment of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and the efforts of struggling U.S. automakers to get a federal bailout. The alleged financial scam involving Bernard Madoff also was revealed too late to make the ballot.

Several of the editors who voted commented on how two transcendent developments dominated the news in 2008.

"As far as I am concerned, there were only two stories this year," wrote Linda Grist Cunningham of the Rockford (Ill.) Register Star. "Global economy collapses (sending every country into financial, political and personal chaos) and Obama elected U.S. president, changing the way the America does business financial, political and personal."

Reports are that the cops were acting on intelligence that shots had been fired from the Killers Range Rover. Both Bounty Killer and Mavado were on the way back to Kingston after performing at a show in Portland. Several forensic tests were done on the vehicle but even up until press time the cops could not say if they had found any incriminating evidence

SAN FRANCISCO--Supporters of Proposition 8, the California initiative that eliminated the right of same-sex couples to marry last month, reacted with surprise and dismay this weekend to the announcement by the state's attorney general that he had reversed his position and would ask California's high court to invalidate the measure.

Jerry Brown, the state's attorney general--and a leading candidate to replace Arnold Schwarzenegger as governor in two years--filed papers on Friday asking the state Supreme Court to overturn Proposition 8, which amends the state's Constitution to define marriage as only between a man and a woman.

The decision is a major reversal for Brown, whose office argued against same-sex marriage in the spring, only to see the Supreme Court find a law banning gay marriage unconstitutional. After last month's election, in which 52 percent of voters effectively reinstated that law by supporting Proposition 8, Brown again said he would support the will of the people.

In a brief filed on Friday, Brown abruptly changed sides, saying he had looked closely at state precedent and had concluded that he couldn't defend the new law. "Proposition 8 must be invalidated because the amendment process cannot be used to extinguish fundamental constitutional rights without compelling justification," Brown's brief says. The state Supreme Court, in its decision earlier this year, found that gay couples enjoy the same fundamental right to marry that straight people do.

Brown's brief acknowledged that the state is facing a constitutional crisis. Every branch of government--including the governor, a majority of state legislators, and the state's highest court--approves the rights of same-sex couples to marry, while a slim majority of voters have eliminated those rights. "We have a conflict between the amendment power (through voter initiatives) and the duty of the Supreme Court to protect minorities and safeguard liberty," Brown said.

Supporters of Proposition 8 did not try to hide their irritation after losing one of their strongest political allies. "It is disappointing that the attorney general has refused to defend the vote of the people as the law instructs him to do," said Andrew Pugno, general counsel of Protect Marriage, one of the groups that spearheaded the initiative. "It will take some time to digest this new and unusual legal argument he has created. As the only remaining party defending Prop 8's validity in these lawsuits, it is more important than ever that we remain focused on our role of providing the court with the law and argument that shows Prop 8's validity."

The sponsors of Proposition 8 have asked the court to invalidate the marriages of the more than 18,000 same-sex couples who were married before the election last month. They also added some extra wattage to their legal team on Friday when they named Kenneth Starr, the former U.S. solicitor general who led the investigation of President Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky, as their lead counsel in the case.

The California Supreme Court could hear arguments on Proposition 8 as early as March.

Shaheem Reid: Obviously, that three-headed monster from the land of Interscope is going to be extremely successful when and if 50 Cent, Eminem and Dr. Dre put out albums. But I'm thinking Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 will be the album the year. Hov's rhymes and a lot of Kanye's beats? That's guaranteed timeless music. On a more underground level, I'm hoping Joe Budden and the Clipse get more shine. They have been some of the doper MCs in the game for the past few years. I thoroughly enjoyed all of Fabolous' guest appearances, so I have faith in the upcoming Loso's Way.

Rahman Dukes: I'm still waiting on that classic album from my boy Saigon's The Greatest Story Never Told. "Believe It" is still an amazing record, and that's just a taste of what to expect from the album. Of course, keeping it Queens, I can't wait to see what 50 Cent does. Fif is by far the realest cat doing it in the game. Jay-Z has been on a streak lately with all of the Kanye West-produced tracks, so his album will probably be the best of '09. Can't forget about the Clipse, and hopefully we'll finally get that Cuban Linx II. Lets go, Rae!

SEATTLE A blast of winter in the nation's northern tier stranded travelers far and wide Sunday just a few days before Christmas, with dozens of flights delayed or canceled and bus passengers sleeping on cardboard at a Seattle terminal.

"I've got phone books as a pillow," said Greyhound passenger Phillip Barton, having given up hope of reaching his home in Ketchikan, Alaska, by Christmas.

A weekend storm dumped about 5 inches of snow around Seattle by Sunday morning, and it snowed anew all afternoon, with the National Weather Service predicting up to 4 inches more by Monday morning.

Storms in the Northeast and Midwest also produced travel headaches for those trying to get home by road, rail and air. Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, one of the world's busiest, canceled about 150 flights Sunday.

Some flights arrived two to three hours late Sunday at New York's Kennedy Airport and Boston's Logan Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, though delays diminished later in the evening.

At Reagan National Airport in Arlington, Va., 30-year-old Rebecca Gray of South Berwick, Maine, said she'd be sleeping in the ticketing area with about 120 other travelers including her 3-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son after missing their connecting US Airways flight to Louisville, Ky.

"The thing that makes me angriest is that they're not giving us hotel vouchers, because of the weather," she said. "And I've got my baby sleeping on the floor upstairs. Maybe if they brought us some water to drink or anything."

Even fair-weather airports weren't immune from tie-ups. George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston had delays averaging about five hours, and flights from Atlanta to Boston and New York were also delayed.

Two of the three runways at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport were operating, but airlines canceled scores of flights Saturday and Sunday, leaving several hundred people wondering when they'd get on a plane, airport spokesman Perry Cooper said. Alaska and Horizon airlines suspended all service Sunday afternoon.

Several airlines urged passengers to rebook flights online from their homes, rather than clog ticket counters. Virgin America encouraged passengers not to fly out of Seattle on Sunday by waiving ticket-change fees for anyone who decided to stay home.

The airport in Portland, Ore., also remained open, albeit with many canceled flights.

Those hoping to save money in tough economic times by taking the bus were stymied. A few dozen passengers were stranded at Greyhound's Seattle terminal Sunday, with no buses running, and some people had been there for days. Fed up, some passengers rented cars and braved the slippery roads on their own.

Barton, a 30-year-old diesel mechanic, said he left Florida on Dec. 9 for a 3,700-mile trip to Bellingham, Wash., where he planned to catch a weekly ferry to Alaska. He arrived in Seattle on Tuesday and said the snow kept him from making it to Bellingham.

"As soon as I get there, I'll get there," he said. "I don't particularly want to spend Christmas in a Greyhound station."

Steven Jemison, a 39-year-old steakhouse chef from Osage Beach, Mo., was hoping to make it to his sister's home in San Diego for Christmas on Thursday and was taking the bus because "with the economy, everyone's trying to save as much money as they can."

He had been stuck at the Seattle terminal since Friday, but that was nothing new. He also had to wait in Chicago for four days and in Spokane for three because of foul weather.

"It's been like this all across the top part of the country," he said.

As for the accommodations, "they're not the greatest."

"I mean, change the TV station; play a movie or something," he said. "Keep people occupied. And get blankets or cots for the kids, or at least for the kids and the elderly. There's no reason a 70-year-old should have to sleep sitting up."

Greyhound spokesman Eric Wesley in Dallas said the company was doing what it could. The company reported delays in between Seattle and Billings, Mont.; Portland, Ore.; and Vancouver, British Columbia.

"We're going to do our best to take care of the passengers," he said. "We'll wait and see what the weather does before we put any passengers on the highway."

Amtrak also canceled train service Sunday between Eugene, Ore., and Vancouver; and between Seattle and Spokane. Service from Seattle to Los Angeles was still running, but with "extreme delays," Amtrak said in a news release.

Crystal Kunze, a 59-year-old retiree from Onalaska, Wis., boarded an Amtrak train in Chicago around 4 p.m. and hadn't moved an inch more than five hours later. She was traveling with her sister and grandson to visit her daughter in New Braunfels, Texas.

She waited six hours for a Saturday morning train in Wisconsin only to end up taking a bus to Milwaukee and then a train to Chicago, she said, holding a book in her lap. She was supposed to arrive in Texas on Monday night but held out little hope that she'd get there soon.

"As long as we make it by Christmas, it will be fine," she said.

BRIGHTON, Mich. (AP) Ticking someone off could get you a ticket in one Michigan city. The Brighton City Council on Thursday approved an ordinance allowing police in the Livingston County community to ticket and fine anyone who is annoying in public "by word of mouth, sign or motions."

The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell reports the measure is modeled on a similar ordinance in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak.

A city attorney says there could be situations where the measure would violate freedom of speech, but that those cases will be reviewed by the city.

The ban takes effect Jan. 2.

The Port Antonio police are still seeking the driver of the ill-fated truck that plunged over a precipice in Stanton district, Portland, on Friday night, killing 14 persons and injuring seven.

The police do not know the driver's name, but he is believed to be from the Boundbrook community in the parish.

Reports are that about 8:30 p.m. on Friday, a truck was transporting persons from Cornwall Barracks in the parish to Coronation market in Kingston. On reaching Stanton district in an area called 'Dam', the driver was negotiating a corner when the rear wheel hit the kerb and the truck plunged into the ravine. The driver fled the scene.

MILLIONS of computers across the globe are threatened by a virus that could open them up to criminals, allowing access to personal details.

A major security flaw has been discovered in Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser, which is used by 70 per cent of all computers, the Daily Mail reports.

There are fears that cyber criminals will exploit the flaw to steal passwords, access internet bank accounts, or send out spam e-mails.

Some two million computers are believed to have fallen victim after visiting apparently safe websites, but the contagion threatens to sweep the world wide web.

Effectively, Trojan horse viruses are being injected into the software of millions of computers, allowing criminals to remotely access and operate them as if they were their own.

Hackers in China are at the centre of the cyber attack, which is the most serious in the history of Microsoft's operating system.

As many as 10,000 websites sites have already been compromised to take advantage of the flaw, according to anti-virus software producer Trend Micro.

So far the hackers have used the technology to steal computer game passwords which can be sold on the black market in the Far East.

The events are known as 'Zero day' attacks because they are exploiting a problem in the Internet Explorer(IE) software which has existed from the day it was launched.

Weed for asthma?

December 23, 2008
Started By STUWY772 Comments

A man who told the court that he only had ganja in his possession because he wanted to use it to help his niece who had asthma, was fined $1,000 in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday. The accused man, Clifton Marshall, was also fined $100 for possession of an offensive weapon.

Allegations in the matter are that Marshall was recently accosted by the police who requested a search of a bag he was carrying. The court was told that during the search, the lawmen found one ounce of the drug inside the bag.

Marshall, who pleaded guilty, explained to the court that he while the weed was for his niece, the knife was a tool he used to strip the vegetables he sold. He was fined for both offences nonetheless.

Graffiti Glossary

ALL CITY
What a writer is considered to be when he/she is "up", but this term implies more status than being just "up". Many people can be "up", but only a select few could be considered "all city". Can also refer to a crew instead of just one writer.

BACK IN THE DAY
Refers to the "old days", old school, or when a writer first started writing. Also a hip-hop/rap term.

BACKGROUND
Originated on the subways out of neccessity. Backgrounds were used to make the piece stand out from all the tags and assorted scribbling on a subway car that make the piece hard to discern; the color or design painted behind the piece to make it stand out from the wall or train.

BACK TO BACK
A wall that is pieced from end to end all the way across. Also can refer to throwups that are one after another.

BATTLE
This is done when two writers or two crews have some sort of disagreement. The battle can take two forms: skills battle or getting up - essentially quality vs. quantity. A skills battle is when two writers piece a wall within a certain time period (usually a day or a few hours) and whoever does the best piece is the winner. A getting-up battle is when the writers take a certain area of a city and whichever crew can get up the most in that area within a certain amount of time (say a week to a month), wins. For both kinds of battle, an outside crew or writer judges who is the winner. The terms of losing and winning are usually negotiated by the crews involved and can be payment in paint, pot, a sock in the jaw, the losing crew has to stop writing their name, etc., etc.

BITE
To copy another writer's style. This is considered a no-no and is looked down upon, even though writers often borrow imagery from cartoons and comics.

BLOCKBUSTER
Big, square letters, often tilted back and forth and in (usually) two colors. Mainly invented to cover over other people and to paint whole trains easily, but they are effective on smaller walls for maximum coverage. Blade and Comet claim to have invented these.

BMT
Train line in NY that had only ridgys and ding-dongs (except for the As and Cs.)

B****
Prolific painting or marking with ink. To cover an area with your tag, throwups, etc.

B****ING
To go out writing.

BUBBLE LETTERS
A type of graffiti letters, usually considered to be an older (and sometimes outmoded) style. Often used for throwup letters because of their rounded shape, which allows for quick formation. Phase2 originally created this style.

BUFF
Any means employed by the transit authority to remove graffiti from trains. The more modern usage is when any graffiti is gone over or removed from any surface, not necessarily just from trains.

TO BUFF, BUFFED
to erase, erased.

BURN
To beat the competition with your style. Also refers to a really good piece, as in one that "burns".

BURNER
Originally a well-done wildstyle window-down whole car, a burner is a very good piece. Obviously, the reference to a window-down car is not applicable for pieces that are not on trains. A burner is any piece that has good bright colors, good style (often in wildstyle) and seems to "burn" off of the wall.

CAP, FAT or SKINNY (tips)
Interchangable spray-can nozzles fitted to the can to vary the width of spray. These are usually racked off of commercial products, such as K-Mart's Bug and Tar, various cleaning products or starches. Many stores and graffiti fanzines sell caps nowadays. Also referred to as "tips" (as in "flare tips" and "thin tips".) The really big fat caps are sometimes called "softballs" because of the wide and soft-looking spray they produce. Tips are sometimes referred to by a certain number of fingers, corresponding to the width of the spray (for example, a "four-finger spray" would be about as wide as your hand. The number on the front of a tip is the catalog number for that model.

CHARACTER
A cartoon figure (usually, but not necessarily) taken from comic books, TV or popular culture to add humor or emphasis to a piece. In some pieces, the character takes the place of a letter in the word.

CHINA MARKER
A type of grease pencil used by artists to mark up contact sheets of photos or the photos themselves for cropping. They come in red and blue, and were adopted by writers for tagging because of the grease base. China markers are not very big, only as big as a crayon, but will write on almost anything.

CLOUD
Stylistic form applied to pieces. The use of clouds is not as freqent now as it was in the early days of subway car painting. See "background".

COMPUTER STYLE
A certain style of wildstyle that looks digital or bitmapped, as if it came out of a computer.

CRAZY
It means crazy in the dictionary definition but can also mean "really" as in "crazy big".

CREW
A loosely organized group of writers who also tag the crew initials along with their name. Crew names are usually three letters, many times ending with "K", which stands for "kings" or "kills" in most cases. Some crew names are just two letters, some are four, it all depends.

CTA
Chicago Transit Authority.

CUTTING TIPS
A way to cut standard tips, thus modifying them into fat caps or flare tips.

CUTTING LINES
A painting technique used on inside fills of letters and characters to get thin lines, thinner than thin tips.

DIS
To insult. Comes from "disrespect". Originally it was just a hip-hop/rap term but has found its way into the culture at large. Hey, even my mom says it! See "front".

DEF
Really good, (derived from "death"). In its day it had as much use in the hip-hop scene as in the graffiti scene. Not in use as much anymore, in some circles its use is considered downright cheesy. I'm all for bringing it back.

DING-DONG
Relatively new stainless type of subway car, so named for the bell that rings just before the doors close. Ding-dongs were preferred because they were so flat. They were a quick buff so no one did any full-scale pieces on ding-dongs.

DOPE
Originally a rap/hip-hop term that means "cool".

DOWN
To be in with, part of the group or action (as in "he's down with us"). Part of your connection, if you are down with someone.

DRIPS
Stylized drips drawn onto letters to add effect. Although inept paint application causing unintentional drips is considered the mark of a toy and is wack, stylized drips drawn on letters are acceptable. This style originated early on in New York subway graffiti.

FADE
To blend/blended colors.

FAME
What a writer gets when he/she is constantly and consistently getting up. One of the goals of writers is to have fame within the subculture of writers, and some, like Chaka, aim to have fame (or at least be recognized) outside of the subculture.

FANZINE
A fan magazine devoted to a narrow interest. Often shortened to "zine" In the graff scene, fanzines would obviously be devoted to writing, featuring photos of pieces, etc. The first graffiti fanzine was "International Graffiti Times" started by Phase 2. Nowadays there are many fanzines such as Can Control, Skills, Crazy Kings, and many others.

FAN SPRAY
A newer type of stock tip on spraypaint cans (used to be only on cheaper brands but almost every company, including Krylon, now sport these on at least one line of their paint) which sprays in a fan pattern that can be adjusted from vertical to horizontal, but is useless for tagging because it looks wack. May be used for fills but the cheezy tips prevent any kind of detailed can control. The tip is not removable for insertion of fat caps.

FAT
Can refer to something being thick, as a "fat line", or can be a general term of good, like "yo, that's fat!" Often spelled "phat".

FEMALE TIPS
A new type of tip that is called "female" because the can has a "male" counterpart. Traditional cans are vice versa. These female tipped cans are no good for writers, except maybe for fills, but even that's questionable.

FILL
The solid interior color of letters on a piece or throwup.

FLAT
Older slab-sided type of subway car; the most suitable surface for painting. This term refers mainly to subways, although it could refer to certain types of freight cars as well.

FLICKS
Prints of photos of graffiti. Also "flick" (singular) and "flix" (plural).

FLY
Cool, same as "fresh". Early hip-hop term.

FRESH
New, cool, good. An early hip-hop term.

TO FRONT
To hassle someone, to want to fight. For example, "You frontin' on me?" Also a hip-hop/rap term. Probably comes from "confront".

GETTING UP
Originally, "getting up" meant to sucessfully hit a train. Now it means to hit up anything, anywhere, with any form of graffiti, from a tag all the way up to a wildstyle burner -- although the term implies the process of tagging repeatedly to spread your name. Tagging something once would be getting up, but would not make you an "up" writer.

GOING OVER
One writer covering another writer's name with his/her own. Also known as "X-ing out" or "crossing out". "Crossing out" is usually just that, painting an X over another writers tag or piece. In the early days of New York graffiti, Cap was the master of doing black and white throwups to go over people. There was even a crew called TCO (the cross outs), whose main goal was to cross everyone out. See also "blockbuster letters".

GREASE PENCIL
See "china marker".

GRIFFIN
A type of shoe dye used in homemade markers.

GROCERY STORE INK
A kind of purple ink used by grocery stores in their marking guns. Writers took this ink to put in their homemades and refillable markers. Writers from back in the day swear by it because of its permanence.

HIP HOP
The culture in the late 70s and early 80s that spawned the graffiti culture as we know it now, breakdancing and hip-hop music, which has since turned into modern rap music.

HIT
To tag up any surface with paint or ink.

HIT UP
When something is covered with tags.

HOMEMADE
A type of homemade marker made out of old deodorant containers stuffed with socks or felt chalkboard erasers and filled with ink. Homemades have been made out of many things, including (most commonly) various deodorant containers all the way up to VHS videotapes. (!) Homemades have also been called "mean streaks," although this has no relation to the paint stick made by Sanford corporation.

HOMEMADE INK
A kind of homemade ink made for your homemade marker. The basic recipe involves shredding carbon paper and mixing it with alcohol and/or lighter fluid. Said to be almost as good as grocery store ink.

ICY GRAPE
An old, discontinued Krylon color that is prized by writers when the odd can turns up.

INSIDES
Originally referred to tagging the insides of subway trains. Now refers to the insides of any mass transit vehicle. For example, "He's the king of insides" would mean he's really up on the insides.

IRT
A train line in NY that had many burners because its cars were all flats.

JUNGLE GREEN
Another old, now discontinued Krylon color that writers go crazy over.

KARAK
Same as "character".

KILL
To hit or b**** excessively. To really get up in a major way.

KING
The best with the most. Some people refer to different writers as kings of different areas. King of throwups, king of style, king of a certain line, etc.

KRYLON
A brand of spraypaint, easily recognized by the distinctive 5-spot logo. Most favored by writers because of its large color selection and cheap price.

LAYUP
Side tracks where trains are parked overnight and on weekends. Initally used to refer to subway layups, but now can refer to freight-train layups.

MAD
Crazy, lots.

MAGNUM
A type of fat marker used by writers, not refillable.

MARKS-A-LOT
Standard black magic marker with a tip about a quarter-inch wide. Had its place in the early days of writing (early to mid 70s) but has been discarded in favor of bigger, better markers and spraypaint.

MARRIED COUPLE
Two cars permanently attached, identified by their consecutive numbers. This is an older subway term from New York.

MEAN STREAK
A type of paint stick made by the Sanford corporation. Writers like it because it is opaque, waterproof, and is generally a bitch to buff because the base solvent is ethyl glycol. Comes in white, blue, red and yellow. I've never seen black or green.

MTA
Metropolitan Transit Authority. (NYC)

MURAL
A large-scale type of piecing, done top to bottom on a wall; usually a large production involving one or two pieces and usually some form of characters.

OLD SCHOOL
General term used to refer to the early days of writing, more specifically, the mid 70s to '82 or '83. Also may refer to hip-hop music of this period. Old-school writers are given respect for being there when it all started, and specific writers are remembered for creating specific styles. For example, Blade and Comet created blockbusters, Phase 2 created bubble letters, clouds, Skeme's "S", and so on.

OUTLINE
The drawing done in a piecebook in preparation for doing the actual piece. Also called a sketch. Can also refer to the outline put on the wall and then filled, or the final outline done around the piece to finish it.

PANEL PIECE
A painting below the windows and between the doors of a subway car.

PIECE
A graffiti painting, short for masterpiece. It's generally agreed that a painting must have at least three colors to be considered a piece.

TO PIECE
To paint graffiti, creating a piece, not just go out tagging.

PIECEBOOK
A writer's sketchbook where outlines and ideas to be executed are kept and worked out. Also referred to as a "black book" or a "writer's bible".

PILOT
A type of fat marker. Prized because it writes wider than a Marks-A-Lot and is made to be refilled.

PROPS
Respect, comes from "proper respect". From hip-hop/rap.

RACK
To steal, usually paints or markers. In the past, most writers stole all materials used for painting. Due to paint lockups in California and other areas, this is no longer possible, so most paint is now bought.

RIDGY
Subway car with corrugated, stainless steel sides, unsuitable for graffiti. Writers did mainly two-color throwups and some top-to-bottom throwups (one color and silver because silver was hard to buff) on these types of cars. Ridgys ran in Brooklyn.

ROLL CALL
Tagging everyone's name in a crew, or the list of people who helped create it to the side of the piece. Not done very often - tagbangers seem to like doing this.

RED DEVIL
A favorite brand of spraypaint that was quite popular back in the day, but now has wack fan spray for tips.

RUSTOLEUM
A brand of spraypaint, generally more expensive than Krylon.

SCRIBER
A tagging instrument, usually made out of a diamond drillbit, used to physically engrave one's name on buses and mass transit vehicles. Considered by some writers to be more destructive than is needed. Sandpaper is sometimes used to tag buses in the same manner--it too is considered mass destruction.

SCRUB
A certain type of throwup (usually two colors) that is filled very quickly with back-and-forth lines, rather than filled in solid.

SG-7
A type of big marker made by Sakura which is a little bigger than a Pilot, and it too is easily refillable, although it does not state that on the outside. Sakura makes a model the same size called "Pentouch" which is a huge paint marker, complete with a mixing ball inside of it.

SHOE DYE
Shoe dye kits are used sometimes for tagging, especially those that consist of a bottle with a brush/sponge device attached. They usually come in black and white. See "Griffin".

STICKERS
A form of tagging, most commonly saying "Hello, my name is". Can be anything from computer-generated, clear, generic blank stickers that have the writer's name on them to elaborate stickers with little pieces and characters. Some writers consider stickers to be for people who are "afraid" to use markers/paint, while other writers use a c****ination of stickers with markers and paint.

*u*kER TIPS
The stock tip that comes with a can of spraypaint. So named because only *u*kers would piece or tag with said tip. That said, lots of old school kings used nothing but stock tips back in the day.

TAG
The most basic form of graffiti, a writer's signature with marker or spray paint. It is the writer's logo, his/her stylized personal signature. If a tag is long it is sometimes abbreviated to the first two letters or the first and last letter of the tag. Also may be ended with the suffixes "one", "ski", "rock", "em" and "er".

TAGGING UP
The act of writing a signature with marker or spraypaint.

TAGGER
As opposed to "writer"; this term is usually used to refer to those who only do tags and throwups and who never piece. Some taggers seem to like more destructive methods such as scribers and sandpaper in addition to markers and paint. Some taggers do get interested in piecing, some don't. Taggers who never piece are sometimes called "scribblers" by more experienced, piecing writers.

THIRD RAIL
On New York subway lines, this is the extra rail that supplies the power for the trains. If you touch the 3rd rail, you will most likely die.

3D
A three-dimensional style of letters, used for added effect on basic letters, sometimes applied to wildstyle for an extra level of complexity. This style was invented by Phase 2.

THROWUP
Over time, this term has been applied to many different types of graffiti. Subway art says it is "a name painted quickly with one layer of spray paint and an outline", although some consider a throwup to be bubble letters of any sort, not necessarily filled. Throwups can be from one or two letters to a whole word or a whole roll call of names. Often times throwups incorporate an exclamation mark after the word or letter. Throwups are generally only one or two colors, no more. Throwups are either quickly done bubble letters or very simple pieces using only two colors.

TOP TO BOTTOM
A piece that extends from the top of the car to the bottom, completely covering it. Can also refer to a wall or building that has been pieced from top to bottom. The first top-to-bottom car was done in 1975 by Hondo. Dead Leg did the first top to bottom with a cloud. Others who started rocking the style, and were known for the "T2B's" were Lee, Chain, the Fab5, and later, Newave crew.

TOY
An inexperienced or incompetent writer. Someone whose writing is either wack, who uses *u*ker tips, or whose style is just plain cheesy. One old definition of "TOYS" is that it stands for "trouble on your system".

ULTRA-WIDE
A type of marker that is extra wide (about an inch and a half), intended for making posters, etc. It too is easily refillable. Often called "Uni-Wide", which is a brand name.

UP
Describes a writer whose work appears regularly everywhere and who is currently writing.

UPS
Refers to people's tags, for example, "So and so's crew has mad ups on main street"

ULTRA-FLAT
A paint preferred by taggers because it sticks to things better than glossy paints.

WACK
Substandard or incorrect (derived from "out of whack"). Anything that looks cheesy or weak. Badly formed letters, incompetent fills, dumb tags, etc.

WET LOOK
No, it's not Jheri Curl, it's an old-school brand of spraypaint. No longer in production to my knowledge.

WILDSTYLE
A complicated construction of interlocking letters. A hard style that consists of lots of arrows and connections. Wildstyle is considered one of the hardest styles to master and pieces done in wildstyle are often completely undecipherable to non-writers.

WINDOW DOWN
A piece done below the windows of a subway car.

WHITE TRAINS
In '83 they started running the white trains on the 6's. Writers loved these cars because they were like canvas all primed and ready to paint.

WHOLE CAR
Obviously a piece covering a whole car. See "top to bottom". This one's by Futura 2000.

WHOLE TRAIN
The masterful feat of covering a whole train with pieces. Two whole trains were done in 1976 by Caine I and two more were done by The Fabulous Five soon after.

WRITER
Practitioner of the art of graffiti.

MONTEGO BAY, St James - A pregnant 26-year-old interior designer who had expected to escape jail time after pleading guilty to possession of, dealing in, and attempting to export three pounds of cocaine, had her hopes dashed yesterday when St James Senior Resident Magistrate Winsome Henry sentenced her to 18 months in prison.

Kerry Ann Bailey-Roach, the court heard, was making her 11th trip to the United States - ostensibly to visit her husband, a student there - when the police nabbed her with the illegal contraband in November.

Her lawyer, George Thomas, begged the judge to structure the sentence so that his client's baby - due next March - would not be born in jail.

"I'm asking, not so much for Kerry Ann but for the unborn child who has done nothing wrong and shouldn't have to be born with a stigma," he pleaded.

However, the judge, who noted that Bailey-Roach was the third pregnant woman to come before her court for drug-smuggling this year, said she couldn't oblige him as the effect would be to send a message to the masterminds behind drug-smuggling attempts that pregnant women could get away with the crime. Additionally, the judge pointed out, Bailey-Roach would have ended up wreaking havoc in the lives of other young innocents if she had succeeded in getting the contraband through.

Bailey-Roach will serve concurrent sentences of 18 months plus $250,000 for possession; 18 months for dealing and 18 months plus $500,000 for attempting to export the drug.

Failure to pay either of the fines will result in the imposition of additional six-month sentences.

NCB vs. Olint

December 20, 2008
Started By Garrick4 Comments

Our report on the court case between NCB and Olint in yesterday's edition of the Daily Observer erroneously said that Olint was seeking the Supreme Court's permission to close an account with NCB and that the bank was fighting to keep one of the accounts open.

In fact, Olint's application is only to discontinue its claim against NCB. NCB's contention is that the application should await next month's Privy Council hearing. NCB is not contending, and has never contended, that it wishes to keep any of Olint's accounts open. NCB's position is that Olint can close the accounts at any time. We apologise to NCB for the error and for any inconvenience caused.

Snake cargo

One week after a snake believed to be poisonous was discovered inside a container at Kingston Wharves Limited, the reptile has still not been removed and the container remains unstripped, racking up hundreds of dollars in charges for the importer.

A credible source at the wharf, who requested anonymity because he is not authorised to give statements to the press, told the Observer that the snake, estimated to be between six and eight feet long and with a head the size of a clenched fist, hissed at his colleague who went in to strip the container. The container had come into the harbour on a vessel from Miami, Florida on Friday, December 19.

"The guy went in there on Monday and heard some movement and the snake made after him and he ran out and shut the door," he said.

"We reported it to the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) and they came on Wednesday," said the source. "When they came they said they were not prepared to capture the snake; they thought it was contained and only needed removal. They then said they referred the matter to the Veterinary Services division, but the work week ended (Friday), and nobody has come from Veterinary Services."

Natalie Fearon, NEPA's public education and corporate communication manager, confirmed that the agency was contacted and that they had visited the wharf. "We did respond and the matter is being handled," she said. "Veterinary Services has been contacted. Two officers have been assigned and are dealing with the matter on location."

Up to Saturday evening, however, our source said the container was still locked.

"The container is still on the wharf and this man is suffering because for each day the container goes unstripped it costs him [more than] US$100."

The Observer was unable to get in touch with the importer up to yesterday evening but officers at the wharf reported that among the things packed inside the container were auto parts, a weed wacker and food items.

It was not immediately clear to what species the snake belonged. Fearon told the Observer that based on the area from which the animal had come, it was not a protected variety.

"In this particular case, the container came in from Florida, so we know it is not a protected species," she said. "So what we have to do is decide on how to manage the fumigation of the animal. So basically [our action] is to fumigate and remove the animal."

She was, however, not sure why they were opting to fumigate as against capturing the snake. Fearon said she would have to read the report that was being prepared on the matter for her. She made it clear, though, that it had nothing to do with a lack of equipment.

"It has nothing to do with equipment, staff or expertise. It is about the agency that takes the lead and in this case it is Veterinary Services," she said.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's website, there are 44 snake species in Florida, six of which are venomous.

Not Enough E10

December 19, 2008

The Jamaica Gasolene Retailers Association (JGRA) is calling on the Government and Petrojam to do whatever is necessary to rectify the current shortage of the recently launched E10 gasolene.

A release from the JGRA secretariat yesterday stated that the Petrojam Refinery has been finding it difficult to cope with the rising demands for the product. This, it said, has resulted in late deliveries and stock out for retailers.

"The retailers are peeved about this as it is impacting negatively on their operations," the release stated.

JGRA President Trevor Barnes said yesterday that, since the introduction of the product, dealers have been getting their deliveries late.

Not enough

"Petrojam has only two bays using to load the E10. But with the significant demand this is obviously not enough," he said. Barnes suggested that the oil refinery use its additional two bays to load the fuel.

He said that, especially with the onset of the festive season, concern has been mounting among gasolene retailers.

"Drivers have to line up at many gas stations from 4 a.m. to get E10, sometimes the lines are there way into the afternoon," he said.

Energy Minister Clive Mullings last week announced a significant increase in the demand for the E10 fuel.

He said that, with some 62 service stations providing the fuel, demand has grown to as much as 8,000 barrels per week.

Gas stations across the country have been asked to retail the product at $2 less that the regular 87 gasolene blend.

LIME landline customers will begin paying more to call Digicel mobile phones, starting January 1, The Gleaner confirmed yesterday.

The rate for calls from LIME landlines to Digicel mobiles will be hiked by 21 per cent from $7 to $8.50 during peak hours. However, off-peak and weekend rates will be reduced by seven per cent, from $7 to $6.50.

The move is fuelling a new tele-communications dispute.

Officials of LIME, recently rebranded from Cable and Wireless, confirmed the rate increase but argued that not one cent of that amount would go into the firm's coffers. According to LIME, Digicel imposed the rate increase, which it cannot refuse to pass on to its customers.

Geoff Houston, country manager for LIME, charged that the rate increase was discriminatory, as Digicel is maintaining a lower price for fixed wireless to its mobile phones.

"This is a clear case of discriminatory pricing and abuse of dominance because Digicel is asking LIME landline customers to pay twice as much to call Digicel mobile phones as they charge their own fixed-wireless customers to call those same Digicel mobile phones," said Houston.

"The reality is that almost 70 per cent of the calls from LIME landlines are made during the peak period so the overall impact on our customers is going to be extremely negative," Houston added.

The country manager said LIME has already brought the matter to the attention of the authorities and will take any action necessary to protect its customers.

Break for customers

But Digicel scoffed at LIME's claims, arguing that it was rebalancing its charges, which would result in a break for residential customers.

"We are now seven per cent cheaper than both LIME and Claro for off-peak and weekend rates and it is mainly residential customers who use services at this time, so we believe the response to the rate rebalancing will be, by and large, welcomed by the public," Helga McIntyre, legal and regulatory manager at Digicel, told The Gleaner.

"LIME gets to keep a percentage of the retail price, so for off-peak and weekend calls, they will be receiving less, which might explain why they are unhappy," McIntyre added.

She said the two companies were already in a legal battle because Digicel believes LIME is overcharging for its interconnection service.

Increase within cap

In the meantime, telecommunications watchdog, the Office of Utilities Regulation, (OUR), said it had received notice from LIME about the pending increase.

The OUR said while it had set a cap on the price that companies could demand for calls terminating on their networks, the average increase from Digicel did not breach the cap.

According to the OUR, the price of calls from a LIME fixed line to a Digicel mobile includes retention and termination charges, which Digicel could decide to increase.

When 50-year-old Carol Myers* takes a stroll on Jamaica's streets, she feels the piercing stares of passers-by. Crude snickering and probing questions are poignant reminders that she is different. The desire to fit in is trumped by the reality that she stands out.

Myers, whose right hand was incinerated in a workplace acci-dent, and subsequently cut off, knows well the pain of burn victims who struggle to shake off the scorn and social discrimination that disfigurement sometimes brings.

Persistent inquisitions

In public, they fend off persistent inquisitions about the source of their wounds and are followed around by nagging children. In private, they battle with depression and low self-esteem and often retreat into isolation. Though the wounds are external, hurt resonates beneath the surface.

"Life is different and it makes me feel left out sometimes because I don't go out anymore," stated Myers, whose home has become a reclusive cocoon from the hail of questions and insults about her condition. "Persons pass a lot of inferior remarks about me on the street, which I feel funny about, but I won't allow it to overthrow me."

But during an interview with The Gleaner, her steely resolve faltered as rivulets of tears ran down her face. The pain is palpable. Though Myers doesn't bear the trademark skin wounds of traditional burn victims, negative reactions to her injury exacerbate her trauma. A frequent remark which angers her is, "Man chop off yuh han'."

The father of Oshane, two, and his four-year-old brother Vincent Richards, who were burnt when a coal stove exploded, said he is worried about the ridicule his children will face as they grow up.

"Mi children spoil up, but I am praying they will grow it out because if they don't, they are going to have some terrible scars to cope with," lamented their father. As he took a deep breath, tears welled up. The pause was pregnant with pain. But in a show of defiance, he quickly contained himself. "They are going to make it though and if them must become a doctor or lawyer, they are still going to be it 'cause this won't stop them."

Cassandra Rigg, 24, oozes similar confidence. Despite being scarred from head to foot, Rigg, who suffered severe burns at age two when her house was set ablaze, believes she is still beautiful.

"I don't try to hide the scars in any way, and I go out just like anyone else," she stated.

Rigg said she tries to ignore insultive comments and remains, for the most part, unfazed. However, she told The Gleaner that criticism and meanness sometimes caused her to question God about her challenges.

"I have a high self-esteem, so I don't allow my misfortune to get me down because I know I am no way lesser than anyone. However, the remarks I have to go through on a daily basis sometimes make me think otherwise," she explained.

Beneath the veneer of strength exuded by Delores Marshall, Rigg's mom, signs of depression are evident when she speaks about the horrific incident that changed the looks of her youngest daughter, forever transforming her life.

"I am still hurt over the situation and when I think about it, I can't help but to cry," Marshall said. "I know God have her here for a purpose, so I won't worry myself too much."

High hopes

Rayon Robinson has an almost other-worldly cheerfulness that belies his physical incapacity. The 42-year-old, who was blinded by acid in a workplace accident, has an uncanny optimism despite contention with jeers from critics.

"I know I am going to achieve my goals just the same because I have quality and I know I can make it," he declared.

Robinson, whose hopefulness is buttressed by his Christian convictions, said his dream is to be blessed with two children and a job in religious ministry.

Engrossed in singing responsibilities at his local church, Robinson said he is also hoping to take his talent to a higher level soon.

"My present condition won't set me back as I am nothing short of a human being," he added.

Fabian Letman, 28, who suffered scars to his body in a freak accident three years ago, said though he feels isolated from society, the tragedy has helped to build his self-esteem.

"This incident motivates me to go on to higher heights," remarked Letman, a security guard at Hampton School in St Elizabeth. "The whole situation affects my life in every aspect you can think of, but I'm trying to be strong and remain positive. I believe one day I will overcome my distresses," he said.
