PHARR, Texas A bank robber in South Texas held up the place from the comfort of his car. Police said a man used the drive-thru lane Monday morning to rob Lone Star National Bank. Police said the driver slipped a note to a female teller, who provided an undetermined amount of cash, then he drove away.

Lt. Guadalupe Salinas said the man was alone in the car and did not appear to display a weapon. Salinas told The Associated Press there's no indication that the robbery was an inside job.

Law officers declined to release the contents of the note. Police are reviewing bank surveillance video.

The FBI declined comment.

An Oklahoma inmate was beaten to death earlier this week after being placed in the same cell with a man he had testified against.

According to NewsOK, 23-year-old Paul Duran (pictured on the left) had fought with his initial cellmate and was moved into a different cell with 32-year-old Jessie James Dalton (pictured on the right) on Wednesday night (March 11).

15 minutes later, prison guards would find Duran beaten to death.

Duran
and Dalton broke into a home together in 2002 and Dalton killed a person in the house.

Duran
pleaded guilty to lesser felonies as part of an agreement to testify against Dalton.

Duran was sentenced to 28 years behind bars while Dalton was sentenced to life without parole.

Jerry Massie
, the spokesman of Oklahoma State Penitentiary, said the two men were not supposed to be put in the same cell and prison officials are trying to determine how it happened.

A nightclub boss who wrote a letter to police denying that drug use was rife in her club has lost her license, after cops found that the letter itself was covered in cocaine.

Pauline Terry wrote the letter in January, denying that Club Compass in Ramsgate, Kent was a haven for drug taking. A police raid on the venue had found 'huge' traces of various Class A drugs in the bar and toilets, including cocaine, heroin and ecstasy.

A police source said: ' It does us a lot of favours when the licencee, in defending her nightclub on drug allegations, sends in a letter covered in cocaine.'

Police licensing officer Nigel Cruttenden said: 'When we did a swab in the toilets we found traces of cocaine, heroin and ecstasy at the highest level ever recorded in Thanet. A level of four is sufficient for magistrates to order a crack house closure and we found 8.3.'

And about Terry's letter, he added: 'When I did a swab I found a reading of 1.1 for cocaine inside the envelope.'

Terry - who was fined Ł1,000 for a number of license breaches last month - failed to turn up for the licensing hearing last week, at which Thanet council revoked her license. Police are recommending that the club be closed permanently.

LAGOS (Reuters) A Nigerian undergraduate has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for obtaining $47,000 (33,382 pounds) from an Australian woman by convincing her over the Internet that he was 57 years old, white, and madly in love with her.

Lawal Adekunle Nurudeen met his victim on the Internet in 2007 and convinced her that he was a British widower called Benson Lawson. He said he was an engineer working in Lagos whose wife and only child had been killed in a car accident.

"The victim, a 56-year-old woman from Australia, told the convict that she wanted a husband and all the men she had met always disappointed her," said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria's anti-corruption police.

"The convict, who is married with three children, instantly replied and told the victim she had met her Mr Right ... He sent the picture of a white man to foreclose any suspicions."

The woman sent Nurudeen money for medical treatment and travel costs to visit Australia. He spent the funds on two plots of land and a Honda Prelude car.

Nigerian confidence tricksters have a long history of extorting money via the Internet through "419" scams, named after the clause that outlaws them in Nigeria's penal code. Many are never caught.

Beer quells heart disease and chocolate staves off cancer? Though often tagged with a disclaimer, studies that tell us to eat, inhale and generally indulge in "bad stuff" is music to our ears. So go ahead and enjoy these bad-for-you remedies-everything in moderation, as they say-until the next study inevitably overturns the research.

10. BEER

The newest bad kid on the block, beer has long been overshadowed by its healthier alcoholic cousins. While no one's suggesting you switch that glass of antioxidant-rich Pinot Noir for a tall glass of lager-there's still that beer gut to worry about-new research has suggested that moderate beer intake can actually improve cardiovascular function. Now if only a scientist will discover the health benefits of ballpark franks and chicken wings. Heaven.

9. ANGER

If you're one of those people who tends to bottle things up, only to explode ... don't hold it in so long. Studies show that bursts of anger here and there are good for the health, and can be an even more effective coping mechanism than becoming afraid, irritated or disgusted. Anger, like the consumables in this list, however, is best in moderation: stay angry for long periods of time and you'll be plagued with a host of health issues, like *lo** pressure, sleep disorders and lung damage.

8. COFFEE

Java is one of the most debated substances around. Is it good for you? Is it bad for you? Both? The consensus, now anyways, seems to favor those who enjoy their morning jolt-unrelated studies claim coffee is a major source of antioxidants in our diet and can help lower your risk of diabetes. Something in the beans is also thought to ease the onset of cirrhosis of the liver and pancreatitis, good news for those who like to party hard all night before their morning caffeine boost.

7. LSD

We're definitely not in the business of advocating drug use. But check out this interesting science: In heavy drinkers, small doses of LSD have been thought to help bypass the rock-bottom stage of alcoholism and prevent relapses. These studies-some decades old-were done in closely monitored, clinical settings; many patients haven't had a drink in the many years since. It's an interesting finding that needs a lot more investigation, and not a remedy that should ever be tried at home. Meantime, and this may come as no surprise, recent study of 36 volunteers who took an LSD-like drug in a lab setting had them reporting mystical experiences and behavior changes that lasted for weeks.

6. SUNLIGHT

Exposure to the sun's rays is necessary to survive, but can also kill you in gross, cancerous quantities. Asthmatics, at least, could benefit from measured doses of ultraviolet rays, according to scientists. Sunlight suppressed the immune reactions that cause asthma in some lab studies with mice and could be used to treat humans afflicted with the disease in the future. And sunlight-even if indirect, such as on a shaded porch-is known to boost the mood. Extra sunlight can help office workers avoid afternoon drowsiness, a recent study found. There's still no excuse to head outside and bake, however.

5.MAGGOTS

They're creepy, slimy and altogether ooky, but maggots can save your life. These squirmy larvae are science's newest wonder-cure and were approved in 2003 as the Food & Drug Administration's only live medical device. Placed on serious wounds, maggots mimic their "wild" lifestyle and munch on bacteria and dead tissue, stimulating healing and helping to prevent infection.

4.MARIJUANA

It's medicinal, we swear! Marijuana, often associated with memory loss, is ironically now being hyped as a way to stave off the ultimate form of memory loss: Alzheimer's. Recent studies on mice suggest that anti-inflammatories found in the drug prevent the clumping of brain proteins, one major cause of the disease. So when should you start preventative therapy? We suggest waiting for the human studies to wrap up.

3.RED WINE

A crucial ingredient in the diets of the world's heart-healthiest populations-like those Bordeaux-guzzling French-red wine has long been known to have potent anti-cancer and artery-protecting benefits. The key, some studies indicate, is an antioxidant found specifically in the skin of red wine grapes, called resveratrol. The latest studies even link resveratrol to greater endurance, a reduction in gum disease and Alzheimer's. White wine, which is fermented after the skins are removed, is less beneficial according to some studies.

2.CHOCOLATE

The key, some studies indicate, is an antioxidant found specifically in the skin of red wine grapes, called resveratrol. 1.SEX

Scientists have found that the benefits of sex go beyond immediate, ahem, gratification and satisfying the goal of procreation. Besides the obvious evolutionary purposes, we can all take pleasure in the news that having sex is an easy way to reduce stress, lower cholesterol and improve circulation throughout the body. As if you needed another excuse.

Do you think sex toys should be non existent? are these ppl trying to replace us men?

latest sex toy

One of the most interesting and simple device among the discreet sex toys is Vibrating Panty worn by females for self-gratification.

The vibrating panties look like the normal piece of female lingerie featuring the vibrating bullet that comes in contact with the genitalia: clitoris and labia, delivering the fantastic sensations.

So this panty is lingerie and a sex toy at the same time.

Vibrating panties with the function turned off may be used as a normal piece of lingerie and can be activated at any time.

Some women like to wear these panties in the office or anywhere they wish to receive the sexual massaging of their genitalia. The most important feature of the panties is their noiselessness.

This discreet feature allows using the panty wherever and whenever the user wishes without the fear to be heard by someone else.

Since linking with the Big Ship in 2007, life has been smooth sailing for STAR of the month Laden. Coming to fame through the Digicel Rising Stars competition, where he made it into the top ten, Laden has continued to grow, develop and shine since being under the guidance of Big Ship Productions.

Living, travelling, performing, partying and making music, Laden is all about his Big Ship family. He told THE STAR, "Big Ship is the hot spot, Stephen McGregor is the genius, I have always wanted to work with him even before Rising Stars, from St Elizabeth." Before working with the 'genius', Laden recorded demos on his rhythms and met up with Stephen through a mutual friend.

First song

He recorded his first song for Stephen called Don't You Like It on the 'Chiney K' rhythm and continued to produce hits such as I'm Sorry, Really Like You and others. Laden said, "working with Stephen is cool, he's the best, he taught me how to record properly, about notes, how to deliver properly on the rhythm and with energy as well. Now it's like I'm part of the family."

According to producer Stephen McGregor, it was Laden's lyrical content that originally drew his attention saying, "he was always rhyming and always with a humour about it, then I started hearing his melodies.

Very versatile

He definitely has potential and more. He is also very versatile, he can go on different types of dancehall vibes, hard-core, girls tunes anything."

Laden's debut album Time to Shine, will hopefully be released by the beginning of summer. However, in the meantime, he has a number of singles in the pipeline, including one on McGregor's latest rhythm called 'Boasy.'

Tifa Electrifies Canadian Fans

Friday, March 13th was the date Toronto Dancehall was waiting for, and Dancehall Diva Tifa was the star of the show, shining like the brightest star in the galaxy.

Answering the call from Niyah of MYC Entertainment, Tifa delivered for the fans who attended 'Statement' which was a fundraiser in support of the Bustamante Hospital for Children. The night got off to a late start, but once Tifa started making her way to the stage, fans began to rush for their positions at the front for a look at the female artists first time appearance in Canada.

Not disappointing, Tifa delivered hit song after hit song clearly, and had the ladies singing the hook to "Crawny Gyal", her recently released "Spell It Out" produced by Ward 21, and Tick It Like A Clock on Stephen McGregors Boasty Riddim'. The men watched Tifa's performance with delight, taking in her every move.

"Tifa gwaan good" said Canadian Dancehall Queen Simone, who gave non-stop 'forwards' for Tifa's lyrical delivery. Nitro Da CD Sound had the Dancehall vibes rocking with their throwback segment, 'maddening' the masses with the Beenie Mans chune Licky Back, as well as Fiesta and Joyride riddims.

Bigga Boss brought the dance to a stop with his Hip Hop and R&B segment as the crowd 'popped champagne' and 'lived their lives' is fine fashion. Nikki Hype and JLogix kept the night moving as hosts; JLogix performed his hit single "Wedding Band. Tifa will be attending photo shoots, doing interviews on radio and print, and will head back to Jamaica on Sunday!

Montego Bay crash victim dies

March 11, 2009

Staff at the Air Jamaica reservations department are in mourning following the untimely death of one of their colleagues on Monday from injuries sustained in a traffic accident.

The police yesterday dismissed earlier reports that Denise Mattison, of the reservations headquarters on Queens Drive in Montego Bay, was the victim of a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of the Fairfield crossing in Montego Bay, last Saturday.

Law-enforcement personnel said the other driver had also been hospitalised. They did not release his name.

Three kids motherless

Mattison had been brain-dead since the time of the accident and succumbed to her injuries Monday morning. She has left three children to mourn her death.

Mattison was heading for work shortly before 9 a.m. when, upon reaching the four-way intersection along the Fairfield main road, the 1999 Toyota Corolla she was driving collided with a 2000 Toyota Corona.

Saturday's accident came just days after a five-vehicle collision along the Montpelier main road in the parish, which claimed the life of Cutesha Gayle, a policeman's fianceé, and injured at least five others.

The police confirmed yesterday that Sgt Andy Birch and his two daughters were still hospitalised.

Research released last year by Triangle, a leading South African gay rights organisation, revealed that a staggering 86% of black lesbians from the Western Cape said they lived in fear of sexual assault. The group says it is dealing with up to 10 new cases of "corrective rape" every week.

"What we're seeing is a spike in the numbers of women coming to us having been raped and who have been told throughout the attack that being a lesbian was to blame for what was happening to them," said Vanessa Ludwig, the chief executive at Triangle.

Two Bountiful Junior High School teachers are accused of sexually assaulting the same 13-year-old student, after their separate relationships with him spiraled from personal conversations to the exchange of sexual text messages and phone sex, authorities said.

On Friday, the Davis County Attorney's Office filed first-degree felony charges of rape and sodomy on a child against Linda R. Nef, 46, and Valynne Bowers, 39.

Nef, a Utah studies teacher and cheerleading adviser, and Bowers, who teaches math, each confessed to having sex with the student, said Bountiful Police Lt. Randy Pickett. Until recently, the two teachers did not know about each other's relationship with the same boy, Pickett said.

The charges were filed after Nef arranged a meeting with police on Thursday and admitted having sex with the boy for more than a year, Pickett said. Their sexual relationship allegedly began in October 2007 and lasted until December 2008, he said.

During the meeting, Nef revealed Bowers' relationship with the boy, Pickett said. Bowers allegedly began having sex with him in December, and she also has acknowledged the relationship, he said.

Nef was booked into the Davis County Jail on Friday afternoon and has her first court appearance scheduled for 1:30 p.m. March 27.

Bowers also was arrested and booked into the jail on Friday, Pickett said. She later appeared in court, where she waived her right to a preliminary hearing and

was ordered to stand trial. A felony arraignment in her case is scheduled for 9 a.m. March 16.

Nef, who began her career with the Davis County School District in 2004 as a physical education teacher at Taylor Elementary School, resigned from her post at the junior high on Monday, said school district spokesman Chris Williams.

Bowers was placed on administrative leave while district officials conduct their own investigation. Bowers has taught in the district since 1996 and was an elementary school teacher for nine years before she transferred to Bountiful Junior High in 2006, Williams said.

"So far, there is nothing to indicate that there are any other students involved, or any other faculty or employees involved," Pickett said.

In separate conversations, the boy and the two teachers began discussing personal problems, Pickett said. That led to text messages, including ones involving sexual matters, then phone sex and the alleged sexual assaults, Pickett said.

The investigation so far indicates none of the alleged sex acts occurred at the school, Pickett said. Instead, the teachers allegedly went with the student to homes, parking lots or parks in Bountiful, Woods Cross, Farmington and Kaysville.

Williams said parents picking up their children from the school Friday expressed disbelief and shock. Jenifer Wright, whose eighth-grade daughter attends the school, said the news alarmed her.

"It makes me very worried. I'm very protective about my children," she said.

Holly Ruhr, whose seventh-grade daughter attends the school, said she is not worried by the charges because she has been "impressed in every way" by Bountiful Junior High.

"My daughter is thrilled to go to class every day," she said. "This is just a case of one or two teachers. Not a bad school."

Another parent struggled to believe the allegations, defending Bowers as a great teacher.

i dont really have alotta those moments but for me, it has to be when i got my job, cause i was going tru alot and i had too many debts....and when i got the call, it was the greatest moment

Drivers are fed chilli

Drivers in China are being forced to eat raw chilli by police to stop them falling asleep at the wheel.

Police in the Chongqing region have started serving drivers chilli peppers at highway service stations.

It is a traditional Chinese belief that people often feel more sleepy in the spring, the Chongqing Evening News said.

"It's really good to have some hot peppers when you are tired from driving," van driver Chen Jun was quoted by the newspaper as saying. "They make you alert."

China's roads are among the most dangerous in the world due to overloaded and speeding trucks.

Drivers switch lanes without signalling and often ignore traffic lights.

The 21-year-old singer has decided to take back Chris, who has been charged with felony assault and making criminal threats after he allegedly beat her. But those close to her are concerned for her safety after hearing the couple's vicious rows.

One friend told In Touch Weekly magazine: "We have heard him yelling and getting so angry with her since the whole thing went down. We are all scared for her and think he could even kill her."

Chris is accused of punching, biting and choking Rihanna until she was unconscious in his silver Lamborghini. If convicted, he faces over four years in prison.

The friend added: "After Chris was arrested she admitted this was not the first physical attack. She said it's been going on for months and it has gotten worse."

A duet

It was recently reported Rihanna and Chris, 19, are recording a duet together in Santa Monica with producer Polow Da Don. Although the name of the song has not been released, a source said: "The theme is about being stronger and growing stronger in a relationship. The song was originally created for Rihanna before the fight."

However, it wasn't initially slated for Chris to be on the song.

"The funny thing is, the song expresses the emotions that both Chris and Rihanna are feeling at this moment - facing challenges and overcoming the ups and downs of a relationship in which you become stronger."

Meanwhile, Chris has withdrawn his name from the nominations at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.

The singer was up for Favourite Male Singer and Favourite Song for Kiss Kiss but, despite an online petition, which was signed by more than 5,000 people calling for his removal, the children's TV network had refused to do so.

Chris' representative said in a statement: "Chris very much appreciates the support of his fans and the honour they have paid him in the way of nominations. Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding the incident last month has shifted the focus from the music to whether he should be allowed to be among those nominated."

When Micah Walker got a call that he was to attend a job interview, he was overjoyed. Little did he know that the potential 'employer' was a sexual predator who would try to bugger him.

Walker, 21, is now at home trying to recover emotionally from the trauma of an attempted buggery that took place last week.

Constabulary communication liaison officer for St Catherine, Corporal Maxine Russell-Thomas, did not give the details of the incident, but confirmed that a report had been made and the matter was being investigated.

But Walker decided to share his story with THE WEEKEND STAR. The man who recently completed his studies at HEART said he had sent out many résumés, mostly to hotels on the north coast.

Brought a friend

Last week, he got a call from a man who told him that he could offer him a job. Walker was told to visit an address in Green Acres, St Catherine, to be interviewed. He said because he was not familiar with the area, he asked a friend, Ricky, to accompany him.

"When I got there, I called the man and told him that I was outside. He told me that my friend has to leave because I'm the one he's giving a job, not him," Walker said.

He said he agreed, but instead of leaving, his friend, who had become suspicious, hid around a corner.

Walker said: "He sent a friend to open the gate and I went in. He told me to go upstairs and I thought that was weird because I saw an office downstairs, but he told me that that office belonged to another guy."

Walker said when he went upstairs, the man pushed him into a bedroom. Realising that something was amiss, Walker said he told the man that he was no longer interested in the job and was ready to go. He said he was hit in the face and the man even admitted that he did not, in fact, have a job for him.

Ricky told THE WEEKEND STAR while he was outside, he decided to call Walker but received no answer. After several attempts, Ricky said a man answered the phone and told him that Walker had left in a taxi. This, he knew to be false because from where he was, he could see the gate and had seen no taxi. When he tried to call again, he heard Walker screaming in the background and shouting, "Him a try rape mi! Call di police." Ricky said he tried to call police but did not get an answer.

Walker told THE WEEKEND STAR that his attacker asked him to perform oral sex on him and when he refused, he used a pair of pliers to threaten him and tried to undress him. He said the man also told him that he was going to have sex with him and would shoot him if he refused.

Threatened him

He continued: "Him back a scissors and den im pull out a suitcase an seh see di gun ya, mi a go shoot you. I was in dere fighting him off. Him grab on to my penis and mi decide seh im nah go rape mi, him haffi go kill mi. There was a lady in the house, she looked like a helper or something and she wasn't even saying anything."

He said he was eventually freed when the other man in the house told his attacker to "just let him go".

Both Walker and Ricky immediately went to the Spanish Town Police Station where they reported the matter.

Kartel Talks About Hypocrisy

Vybz-Kartel-3.jpg Recently Caribbean entertainment giants HYPE-TV sat down with leader of the Portmore Empire Adijah 'Vybz Kartel' Palmer to talk about several topical issues that have been plaguing the minds of both the entertainer and the society at large.

In the two part interview the Portmore deejay addressed numerous issues including the feud with Alliance bad boy Mavado, the recent ban on dancehall by the Broadcasting Commission, Carnival, Ramping Shop and the upper echelons of society deceitful web of hypocrisy it weaves in deceiving the poor and uneducated sectors of society.

Kartel in a somewhat militant mood also took a swipe at the ongoing case involving a slain former government official allegedly accused of being a homosexual yet his indiscretions are being treated like a taboo.

Beenie Man Takes Belize By Storm

The 'King of the Dancehall' became 'King of Belize' this past weekend when he inaugurated the Belize Reggae Fest Series in Belize City. Scores of Belizeans stormed the Belize City Center to see his Royal Highness Beenie Man, alongside Reggae crooner Anthony Cruz, Dancehall's 'First Lady' D'Angel, dancer Dyema, and DJ Andrew D of Irie Jam Radio.

The 'Doctor' Beenie Man sent Belizean Reggae fans into frenzy when he made a surprise appearance at the Santiago Castillo Plaza hours before the big event. Mobbed by throngs of eager fans Beenie eventually had to be whisked away for his own well being. 'Attitude Gyal' Dyema also made a big splash at that Plaza, as Belizean Dancehall fans were equally excited to finally see the 'Dutty Fridaze' dancer live.

"I have every Dutty Fridaze and Passa Passa video," states 17 year-old Belizean native Karen. "My mom won't let me go to the show tonight so I had to come down here and see Dyema and Beenie Man. I can't believe it," she says, moved to tears as Beenie Man shakes her hand."

In early March 2009, one of the most talked about dancehall artists Mavado will unveil the second chapter of his stirring street narrative, Mr BrooksA Better Tomorrow, on VP Records. Mavado who was crowned Best New Reggae Artist at the 2008 MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards and by Rolling Stone Magazine (April 2008) is making dancehall a big screen production. The talented singjay from Kingston, Jamaicas toughest ghetto Cassava Piece, has crafted his strongest album yet a bittersweet struggle over the dichotomies in his world past vs. present, hope vs. despair, and freedom from strife.

Following Mavados critically acclaimed debut Gangster For Life: The Symphony of David Brooks (July 2007), Mr BrooksA Better Tomorrow is a true reflection of who Mavado (David Brooks) is today. This second installment of his latest hits and daring exploits are built on apocalyptic synthesizer progressions to which Mavado chats and sings simplistic yet profound lyrics with strong conviction and ease. His contagious hook and clever outlaw antics from the albums first single So Special (produced by Linton TJ White) has already turned this #1 Jamaican smash in into a U.S. commercial radio hit remaining on Billboards Top 100 Hot R&B/Hip Hop Airplay and Song chart for over a month and peaking at #52. The chart toppers will not end here, Mavado pours out his heart and soul on every track from his new diary. While his community is plagued by violence and corruption, Mavado unites the ghetto youth on rally cry anthems like Overcome (produced by Stephen McGregor) & Dont Worry (produced by Daseca) and gives thanks to Jah for all his good fortunes on So Blessed (produced by Stephen McGregor). And a Mavado album would not be complete without a steamy track like In Di Car Back (produced by Stephen McGregor), where sexual escapades and desires run rampant on this spicy melody. This rising star with a battle-scarred singing voice (New York Times) has created a breakthrough set for his 2009 release.

With a string of massive underground hits running back to 2006, his international street credibility, collaborations with hip hops biggest names (Jay-Z, G-Unit, Foxy Brown, Wyclef, Lil Kim and Busta Rhymes), his first album Gangster For Life: The Symphony of David Brooks remaining in the Top 25 Billboard Reggae sales chart since its debut, and major scores & endorsement deals, Mavado has gone from obscurity to ghetto super stardom. Deemed the Gully God by fans and media, the controversy surrounding him has also ignited an enigmatic gangster façade. Part prophet, part superhero and part fugitive, Mavado is the voice of the streets and represents dancehall for the new generation.

Many might have heard the name 'Stunt Squad' in a number of Laden's songs, but few know anything about the squad.

Hailing from St Elizabeth, the Stunt Squad is a group of aspiring deejays, engineers and musicians of which Laden has been a member for a number of years. Laden explained: "Stunt Squad is just a group of youths weh have talent like miself. That's my crew. There's seven of us, Snypa Kyng, Oxygen, Kilovani (who are all deejays), Fasca, Vigilant, Bird and me."

The squad works out of the MicroTech Studios in Junction, St Elizabeth, and travels between Junction and Kingston regularly. While Laden is the only one from the squad to make it big so far, he believes there will soon be others from the squad making their mark.

"Sniper King is the nearest one to get a buss, him don't start record yet but him and Big Ship (Laden's label) close," he said.

While Laden may be busy with his career, he said he will never forget his roots because the Stunt Squad has been supporting him 100 per cent. They were the ones who encouraged him to enter the Digicel Rising Stars competition three years ago and he is determined that they too will get their time to shine.

It apears that the news that the imported fertiliser being used in the cultivation of local crops contains human waste is not enough to stop some Jamaicans from purchasing local produce.

Although there was much debate and controversy after the revelation, THE WEEKEND STAR spoke to some shoppers and householders and most were unfazed.

Sheka, a young mother said: "I don't care. Vegetables are healthy, they must be eaten. I always like a little vegetable and I won't stop buying it until it's proven that we're eating the remnants of human faeces. Plus, how we know seh we nah eat worse dan dat? So it nuh bother mi."

Kerique, 25, a young professional, said she had always been extra cautious when handling produce.

"I always wash my vegetables first. I didn't leave those things up to chance because I know how chemicals and food go. So I soak those things in salt water and wash them until dem clean, clean."

One householder, however, told THE WEEKEND STAR that she was fearful of purchasing local produce. She said, "Mi nuh able fi go eat no callaloo or pak choi whe plant inna. In fact, mi nuh go market since then. Anyting whe grow so low a grung, an dem leafy sitt'n deh, mi fraid a dem. Right now, mi prefer go supermarket go buy di farrin one dem."

Following complaints from local farmers about the high prices of fertiliser, the Government imported a quantity of the produce, which they sold at a reduced cost. But recently, the opposition revealed that the fertiliser imported by the Government contained human waste.

Minister of Agriculture Dr Christopher Tufton has dismissed the allegations as political banter and sought to assure the nation that the fertiliser was tested and found to be fit for use.

The Coca-Cola School Tour kicked off with a message of peace reigning in schools islandwide.

The Coca-Cola School Tour is organised by 360 Marketing and Execution Limited, which is spearheaded by Kimani Robinson, formerly of RE TV, and will be aired on CVM TV and ZIP FM. The school tour kicked off last Tuesday on Peace Day at Jamaica College with a special peace concert.

Our message

Carlo Redwood of 360 Marketing and Execution Limited spoke about the tour with THE STAR recently saying, "Coca-Cola High School Tour has been around for four years. It was previously known as the RE School Tour. We changed our message from abstinence to peace in schools, which we thought was more relevant. In the course of making that change, we were approached by PALS (Peace And Love in Schools) who wanted to do a peace tour in high schools and they came on-board."

Six schools

The tour will visit six schools per semester, a total of 12 schools for the year, with artistes such as T.O.K, Konshens, Serani, Bugle, Terror 3000, Laden, Chino, Omari and singer Raine Seville as the sole female. The artistes on Coca-Cola School tour are not on other school tours.

MIAMI (AP)Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth hit and killed a pedestrian with his Bentley on Saturday morning on a busy causeway linking Miami and Miami Beach, police said.

Stallworth was headed toward the beach when he hit a 49-year-old man around 7 a.m., said Miami Beach police spokesman Juan Sanchez. The unidentified pedestrian was taken to a nearby trauma center, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later. He was near a crosswalk but its not clear if he was crossing legally.

Stallworth, 28, was cooperating and no charges have been filed, Sanchez said. Officers drew *lo** to test for drugs or alcohol, which is routine, but police said it was too early to tell if Stallworth was impaired or violating traffic laws. Police would not say where he was coming from or where he was headed.

Miami-Dade County property records show Stallworth owns two condos in a building on Biscayne Boulevard in Miami not far from the causeway and another condo in a different building in Miami.

A message seeking comment was left on the voicemail of his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

The Browns said in a statement they were aware of what happened.

We understand the seriousness of this situation, but will not have any further comment at this time as this is an ongoing investigation, the team said.

Stallworth signed a seven-year, $35 million contract with the Browns as a free agent before last season but hardly played because he was hurt. He was due a $4.75 million signing bonus Friday.

Stallworth, who previously played for New England, Philadelphia and New Orleans, finished last season with just 17 catches for 170 yards. He was slowed all season by a nagging hamstring injury and made just seven starts for the Browns.

Stallworth had his best season with the Saints in 2005, when he made a career-high 70 receptions for 945 yards and seven touchdowns. He was drafted in the first round (No. 13 overall) by the Saints in 2002. Stallworth played his college ball at Tennessee.

TEACHER INJURED IN STONE ATTACK - Calls for help from Government

When Norma Ming-Burke left Cuba to teach in Jamaica, she expected to face some challenges. What she did not expect, however, was to be hit in the eye by a huge stone.

Now, she is demanding that she be compensated for her injuries and for the expenses incurred.

The 56-year-old, who moved to the island six years ago, has been teaching Spanish at the Seaforth High School in St Thomas since. What happened to her last Wednesday, however, was not part of her plan.

Very big hit

It all began after a student Ming-Burke was helping got into a confrontation with other students. She explained, "I was marking names and checking homework and I called up a girl to check her work. Some students gathered at the door and were teasing the girl. One of them came into the class and slapped the girl."

She said she told the students, mostly boys, to leave and threatened to call the security guard. They ran off laughing. Then, the unimaginable happened. "Two minutes later, the stone came. I was just doing my work and the stone came in. A big stone, like a river stone. That blow was so hard, in my mind I believed I was killed. The impact was so hard, my glasses just shattered into little pieces. It was a very big hit. The pain was so hard that in my inside, I said, 'God, I am dead'," she recalled.

Students attempted to take Ming-Burke to the staffroom, but she fell unconscious. She was taken to the hospital where she stayed until Friday. The pain, Ming-Burke said, was excruciating and she was worried that she would lose her vision. Luckily however, there was no immediate damage. She is concerned about long-term damage that might show up later.

She said, "I remember I held on to my eye cause I thought I lose it. When I went to the hospital, my pressure was high and there was dirt from the stone and pieces of glass in my eye. Because of the blow to my head, they did an X- ray, but there was no brain damage."

Shattered glasses

Ming-Burke was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where pieces of her shattered glasses were washed out. Almost a week later, her eye is still inflamed and she still feels some pain.

The incident has left Ming-Burke traumatised and forced her to spend several thousand dollars to get herself treated. She used all her health insurance to pay for treatment and will have to buy a new pair of glasses. The ones that were destroyed were fairly new.

She said, "I am just afraid. From dis happen, I am very nervous. I just have that fear. I don't know when that stone will come again. The eye that was hit was my better eye."

Although badly affected by the incident, Ming-Burke is still determined to stay in the island and teach. She said, "I love my students. I was just thinking why did this have to happen. Nobody deserves this."

She said the school was conducting an investigation, but said no student had been held in connection with the incident. Many students denied seeing anything. She believes that she should be assisted in some way by the authorities.

"I think I should receive some help. Now, I have to buy new glasses, I used up all my Blue Cross and that still wasn't enough. The school said they're working on it and everyone is worried about me. But now, I am not feeling well, every day my head is hurting me. I am very sad. It is hard. It just makes me feel homesick. I will remember this all my life."

While Ming-Burke is hoping that the school will lobby for some assistance on her behalf, efforts to contact the principal were futile. The vice-principal, however, said she was not in a position to give information on the incident. She said to call next week when the principal would return.

Efforts to contact the president of the Jamaica Teachers' Association were unsuccessful.

On February 6 each year, celebrations and tributes ring out around the world in memory of the Honourable Robert Nesta Marley, born on this day in 1945. Succumbing to a menacing cancer at the age of 36, he was prematurely taken from us on May 11, 1981. Lauded with several accolades that include Order of Merit in Jamaica, Bob Marley was crowned The King of Reggae Music by a fan base that spans the four corners of the earth.

The powerful force guiding young Bob Marley from very humble beginnings in Nine Miles St Ann and Trench Town's inner city, through to his being not only a colossal artistic success, but also a steadfast proponent of social justice and human rights is relentless, and lives on in the long legacy of compelling tracks left for the world to reflect on and enjoy. In a 1979 European interview Marley noted he was driven to speak out against weapons, wars, the corrupted or programmed, like those who create actual or virtual weapons to overthrow others. "Scientists still studying and not listening to what I am saying, but if they are not creating things for good, but creating weapons to overthrow people, they will get overthrown with it too," Marley opined. He went on to say the needy shall not be forgotten and the expectations of the righteous shall not perish.

Embracing Rastafari spiritual philosophy, Bob Marley brought its teachings to the world mainly through his music. "I don't have any religion, Rasta is life - I am what I amI am a Rastaman," Bob once declared to an interviewer. With messages of peace, love and truth being the main components of his pulsating sound, doors to success opened globally for Bob, whose first major impact on the Jamaica music scene in 1964 was as a member of, The Wailers - comprised of, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston.

Burning a trail for Jamaican music with the revolutionary sounds of their first singles, "Simmer Down," "Soul Rebel" and "400 Years," as well as with debut albums in the early 70's, "Burnin" and "Catch A Fire," The Wailers commanded attention, and have retained that stance from the day they came on the scene until today - amidst many changes.

After a brief alliance with Lee "Scratch" Perry and around 1969 Alan "Skill" Cole, one of Jamaica's all time favourite star football players returned to Jamaica from his global football stints and regrouped with his friend Bob Marley. "What had been a cordial friendship since meeting at a football game in my early teens, grew into a close connection, that could only have been described as a binding relationship...we were closer than brothers...we were one blood," Skill explained. They formed Tuff Gong Records and from there releases kept coming, Skill said - and then Island Records came along. Being a strong support behind the stage front scenes was a pleasure for Skill, whose invaluable input was greatly appreciated by Bob.

It may have been the commonality of their love for football coupled with dedication to each other and similar values and principles that caused Skill and Bob to mesh so well, but their friendship grew only to become cemented in Bobs last days. Skill, who stuck with Bob - physically and as a super source of emotional support, particularly during his final days on earth, recounted Bob's brave battle with a killer disease called, Melanoma or skin cancer.

"It started in 1970 while Bob played football in Boys Town. He got a rough tackle that left him needing rest for two weeks," Skill recounted. Flaring up again in 1977, the injury was diagnosed as the deadly Melanoma - one of the most aggressive skin cancers. Skill spoke of the treatments and side effects that initially involved removing Bob's toenail and placing him on a strict diet. In describing the shocking manifestation of Bob's illness on stage, Skill said, "When he collapsed in Central Park, he fell into my hands...from there I was with him every step of the way on his road to what I hoped would have been recovery."

Chemotherapy, that seemed to be more hurtful than helpful ensued and Skill described Bob's trip to Germany as one built on the hope of new and more natural treatments that had emerged. Making the trip with his brother, Skill spoke of the dismay that overcame not only him, but everyone around Bob, when his hair fell out. Facing the inevitable was like harsh defeat, leaving solace only in the prolific legacy of music amassed by Bob and The Wailers.

Skill lost a brother, Cedella Booker, Bob's mother, a son and Rita Marley, Bob's baby mothers and his children lost their soulmate and father on that fated day in 1981. However, like the song, "Natural Mystic," whether on February 6 or not, the undeniable truth in Bob's messages serve to somehow continually inspire our world, that is in dire need of an influx of peace, love and harmony.

Bob's numerous awards are listed below:

1976: Band of the Year (Rolling Stone)
June 1978: Awarded the Peace Medal of the Third World from the United Nations
February 1981: Awarded Jamaica's third highest honor, the Jamaican Order of Merit

Who is the man- Vybz Kartel or Mavado? Mavado & VybzOver the years, Jamaicas dancehall fraternity has always had two or three artists that have competed against each other to captivate the arena or be the real big man so to speak. Historically there have been conflicts between the more dominant figures in the entertainment industry. Back in the day, the likes of Supercat and Ninja man went at it in a toe-to-toe showdown at Sting in 1991, the DJs battlefield. There were also conflicts between Ninja Man and Shabba Ranks and Sizzla and Bounty Killer to name a few. The most famous and long lasting conflict in the dancehall would have to be the never-ending battle between Beenie Man and Bounty Killer. It is definitely the most financially beneficial of all feuds as it has made both artists more popular and in turn filled venues with eager fans waiting to see the show down of all showdowns. The new generation of younger artists have brewed their own new set of conflicts, like the war between Aidonia and Busy Signal - Aidonia and Munga - Devra Brat and Munga. The most popular one for the moment however would have to be the Vybz Kartel and Movado conflict. This has seen the lyrical dispute manifest into physical beef in the streets crossing the line between lyrics and reality (something that never really happened with past rivalries). Both Movado and Vybz Kartel have been recording diss tracks aimed at each other with their most recent lyrical onslaughts on Skattas new Self Defense rhythm on which Mavado is adamant that Kartel is a homosexual and Vybz Kartel answers twice by telling him that he will send him to hell and he couldnt be gay because he was in an intimate relationship with his (Mavados) mother. The question remains - who is the man? Who is the most dominant figure in the dancehall at this moment? Is it the Alliance DJ Mavado or Portmore Empires leader Vybz Kartel? This is what the public has to say about - Who is The Big Man? Omar, 27, Store Clerk: Earlier on up inna di year Mavado was the man carrying the title but right now mi affi give the title to Vybz Kartel. Both artistes have out some sick tunes that are running the place but at the end of the day there will only be one and I am betting my money on the Teacha (Vybz Kartel) ReadMore-color.jpg Tavares Fullerton, 23, un-employed: Vybz Kartel mi seh all di way, him a di big man from day one fi me Mavado is a bad artiste but Vybz Kartel is more lyrical and that is what gives Kartel the edge over di singer. Vybz Kartel crew is also the hottest crew now, Javanchi a duh a thing and Black Rhino have more than four hot songs now. Portmore Empire to world. Sheila Stanford, 20, Student: This is a very difficult question, I love both artistes so mi never yet pree fi si who is the better deejay. To me I think it would be hard to compare Vybz Kartel and Mavado as one is a singer and the other is a deejay so I would seh Mavado is the singer a di year and Vybz Kartel di deejay a di year Sashay Cohan, 26, Receptionist: I don't think none of them is the clear leader as yet because the gap is always tight either ways. This week mi turn on mi radio and hear some bad Kartel and by next week Mavado back on track with him. Just like Bounty and Beenie Man can't do with out each other is the same thing with Vybz Kartel and Mavado.

A prosecution witness who admitted that he was a homosexual gave a vivid description yesterday of the hairstyle 26-year-old Sheldon Pusey was wearing when he saw him at the home of 64-year-old Ambassador Peter King on March 19, 2007.

There was much laughter in court when the witness said the hairstyle was healthy-looking and it was one he would have wanted for himself.

King was fatally stabbed four times in the chest and chopped four times in the neck at his home at 11A Waterloo Road, St Andrew. Forensic consultant pathologist Dr Ere Seshaiah testified last week that each of the wounds could have been fatal. He said he also saw 22 other wounds on the body.

Pusey has been on trial in the Home Circuit Court since January 19 for King's murder. The Crown is alleging that the murder took place between March 19 and 20, 2006.

Yesterday the homosexual witness said he first saw Pusey at King's house in 2005. The witness who appeared to be in his late 20s, said he was a businessman and he imported household items. He said King was his friend and in 2006 he lived both at King's house and King's premises at 35A Waterloo Avenue, St Andrew.

He said on the afternoon of March 19, 2006 he went to King's house and saw a medical doctor and the doctor's friend. King was working at his computer in his office and the witness said he went into King's bedroom and began to watch television.

He said while he was watching television King came into the bedroom and told him that he wanted him to proof-read something for him. He said when he went into the office he saw Pusey sitting at one of the computers.

"He was wearing a healthy-looking rope twist ," the witness said when he described Pusey's hairstyle. "You know when you want something for yourself. The ends were bleached and bronze and it was healthy-looking."

The witness said later in the afternoon he saw King and Pusey in the kitchen downstairs. He said he could not remember if King was naked or if he had on underpants but Pusey was in underpants.

Cross-examined by defence lawyer Berry Bryan, the witness admitted he was a homosexual. He said he had never had a sexual relationship with King.

ray_j.jpgLOS ANGELES - Ray J is cruising down the Hollywood Freeway in his black Lamborghini when fans in a passing car recognize him. The singer/actor/sex-tape star slows down so they can snap a photo. In an interview with AP news Ray J said his main goal right now is to get his music out there and to put his acting skills back on track. "I really know how to sing and create and put things together that entertain...be it controversially or be it from music or acting," he told the web site.

The infamous sex tape, which also shot Kardashian to a new level of notoriety, was made in Cabo San Lucas on the socialite's birthday five years ago. Ray J says the two had been a couple for "four years off and on," and insists the video was made strictly for private purposes.
"We were just having fun, letting it all hang out," he says. "But I didn't think they were going to see it actually hanging out," he told AP.

He says he doesn't know how porn purveyors Vivid Entertainment got a hold of the video, but he and Kardashian filed lawsuits after its release. Both reportedly settled for multimillion-dollar sums. The experience and its aftermath inspired his new music. He says that Lil' Kim lured him into the studio, and his mom and manager, Sonja Norwood, urged him to release the album on his own Knockout Entertainment label.

Musically, things are looking good so far. The album's single, "Sexy Can I," is a legitimate hit, currently sixth on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and the video is getting play on MTV and BET.

Slouched in a booth, Mavado (real name: David Constantine Brooks) quietly shares he's not obsessed with death - though his songs talk a lot about it - and that he's ready to give Sean Paul some mainstream competition. The lanky artist's debut album on VP Records, "Gangsta for Life," dropped this summer, and his single, "Dying," is spinning heavily on R&B/hip-hop WQHT (Hot 97) New York.

"I want to be on MTV," Mavado, whose promotional single "Weh Dem A Do" hit radio a few months ago, says. "I want to be a reggae pop star."

The Kingston, Jamaica, native got his music initiation when he first met reggae icon Bounty Killer when he was 15, and he is still affiliated with the heavyweight's circle. Under Bounty's tutelage, Mavado, who took his name from the highbrow watch company, says he's learned to be sure of every business move he makes in order to build a solid career. And while his songs are melodious (and perfect for summertime festivals like Caribanna and New York's West Indian Day Parade), his lyrics are rife with violence.

Mavado's talks about death may stem from a serious run-in with the Jamaican police. According to the MC, when he turned himself in to the Kingston police earlier this year on charges about which he refused to elaborate, an officer tried to throw him through a glass window. Bracing the fall with his hand, Mavado lost three of his fingers, which were reattached during a hospital visit. But once at the hospital, the police said Mavado escaped.

"The police say I'm wanted for a couple of things," says Mavado, who is still allowed to enter Jamaica. "And they tried to throw me through the window and get rid of me but I didn't go through. They say in life you must deal with death. So in the midst of life, you're in the midst of death."

Mavado associates himself closely with 2Pac, citing a bit of "So Many Tears" on his album.

"2Pac has been my idol for so many years," Mavado says. "He was a lot different than all of the other rappers because he had a different style and he lived it. When I checked up on 2Pac's life, most of the things he went through are the same things I'm going through now, like haters and problems with the police. It's like I'm going through 2Pac's struggle with my own."

TMZ reports: 2Pac vs Biggie, it ain't -- but now the beef between 50 Cent and Rick Ross has reached a whole new level ... and it involves a homemade porn tape.

A source tells TMZ 50 Cent plans to release a porn tape featuring one of Rick Ross' baby mamas. We're told 50 bought the tape and will post it on his own site -- and even provide voice-over on it. This is 50!

The feud between the two rappers -- one popular, one not -- has included animated videos, radio station disses and a video where 50 Cent took another of Ross' baby mamas shopping for clothes.

Ganja raids increase in St Bess

Like firemen battling a fierce blaze, the narcotics police and members of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) worked feverishly yesterday to eradicate a multimillion-dollar ganja cultivation, discovered on swampland in St Elizabeth on Monday.

"It is going take us at least a week to complete the task," said Senior Superintendent Carlton Wilson, head of the Narcotics Division.

He explained that his team embarked on the massive operation, based on intelligence reports which suggested there was a significant increase in ganja production.

"We had anticipated this, given the economic recession. We expect that by now people would be scrambling to make more money, using the most lucrative means, which is drugs," said SSP Wilson.

The tranquillity of the usually quiet farming communities of Slipe and Burnt Savannah, St Elizabeth, has since Monday been disrupted by the spluttering sound of JDF helicopters transporting the lawmen to the swampland.

Up to late yesterday afternoon, the lawmen said they had destroyed 14 acres of ready-to-reap ganja.

According to reports, one of the farmers had about four buckets of ganja seeds ready to sow.

"This is just the tip of the iceberg," said Deputy Superintendent Herman Miller, the senior narcotics officer on the ground, supervising the operation.

On Monday, police disposed of 600 pounds of the weed.

'WALKING PHARMACY' PUZZLES COPS

Police in St Elizabeth say a group of men have reportedly been operating a 'walking pharmacy' in sections of the parish offering their services door to door.

This pharmacy, however, only offers sex drugs.

The Area Three police say over the last month, residents have made reports of men visiting their homes selling various sex drugs.

While the police say the full list of items being sold by the men is not confirmed, popular drugs such as 'Gungo', 'Stone' and Viagra were found to be best-sellers.

"We have received a number of reports regarding these men. They are operating a walking pharmacy, so to speak, and selling pills, which, based on our investigations, are prescription sex drugs," Detective Inspector Michael Baugh of the Area Three police told THE WEEKEND STAR.

Prescription drugs

Checks with the Pharmaceutical Society of Jamaica confirmed that the drugs are listed as prescription drugs.

The police say they were first made aware of the matter when a woman from Carlisle in the parish, reported that a suspicious man had visited her house and asked if any men lived there.

The woman further told the police that the man then explained that he was selling some pills and displayed them to her and even asked if she was willing to purchase some for her companion.

Within a week after that incident, the police say they received at least four other reports from other suspecious women.

These women were from Santa Cruz, Gayle Town and Rose Hall, also in the parish.

"All the reports we have received are from women. The women thought the men were thieves, actually, and thus alerted the police," Baugh explained, adding that investigations had confirmed that the men were just selling drugs.

"We checked with residents of the communities and found that the men, indeed, were selling the pills they had displayed to the women. Men from these communities admitted to making purchases," he said.

The police say based on the reports they have received, at least five men are suspected to be operating the 'walking pharmacy'.

"We are seeking these men because what they are doing is illegal, plus they are putting people's health at risk. We are urging residents to be wise and not purchase these sex drugs," said Baugh.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health is warning that the products should not be purchased unless prescribed.

"Medication should not be bought on the street and this black-market sale causes more problems for those who misuse the drugs," said a doctor from the Mental Health Services and substance abuse department at the ministry.

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (CNN) -- What do software mogul Bill Gates and banking investor Warren Buffett have in common with wanted Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera? Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera, ranks 701th on Forbes' yearly report on billionaires. They are all featured in Forbes magazine's world's billionaires report as "self-made" billionaires. Guzman Loera, whose nickname means Shorty, escaped from a Mexican prison in 2001. He heads the powerful Sinaloa cartel, investigators say. Authorities on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border blame the Sinaloa and other cartels for a surge in violence in the region. He ranked 701th on Forbes' yearly report, with an estimated fortune of $1 billion. Mexican Attorney General Eduardo Medina Mora expressed outrage at the publication and described Forbes' calculations on Guzman Loera's fortune as mere "speculation." "I will never accept that a criminal could be recognized as someone distinguished, even if it is by a magazine like Forbes," Medina Mora said to local media during a drug traffic summit Thursday in Vienna, Austria. Forbes is "comparing the deplorable activity of a criminal wanted in Mexico and abroad with that of honest businessmen," he said. Mexican President Felipe Calderon -- speaking at a business summit Thursday in Mexico City -- alluded to the report, saying, "It is very sad the intensification of a campaign, which seems to me, has been launched against Mexico." Calderon added, "Public opinion and now even magazines not only attack and lie about the situation in Mexico but now also praise criminals. In Mexico, it is considered a crime to praise criminals." Guzman Loera has a three-decade history of drug trade spanning North, Central and South America. The Forbes profile of Guzman Loera reported that "the U.S. government is offering a $5 million reward" for the billionaire's capture. Forbes magazine was not available for comment, but its article offers a clue as to why Guzman Loera made the list. "So is there anywhere one can still make a fortune these days? The 38 newcomers offer a few clues. Among the more notable new billionaires are Mexican Joaquin Guzman Loera, one of the biggest suppliers of cocaine to the U.S."

Speaking passionately with her hands, Gloria Young thanked God that calls to put the brakes on plans to issue driver's licences to members of the hearing-impaired community have fallen on deaf ears.

Though she uttered no words, everything Young said was heard. Young was moving the vote of thanks at the launch of a 30-day sign-language training course for selected police officers and personnel from the Island Traffic Authority, where the Government signalled, in a profound voice, that it was not listening to those who have been clamouring for the historic move to be parked.

The course, which will pave the way for the issuing of the licences to deaf drivers, comes after more than 30 years in the trenches fighting for the right to drive.

The deaf community has apparently won the battle, as the course will facilitate the testing and certification of the hearing-impaired.

Significant day

"It is my honoured privilege to be able to give the vote of thanks on behalf of the disability sector, and the deaf community in particular, for this significant day that we have lived," Young signed as somebody interpreted.

"I want to thank God, first, for giving us the strength not to give up the fight and allowing people to stand with us and work to make this day a reality," said Young with her hands.

For years, the issue of whether the deaf should be allowed to go behind a steering wheel has been the subject of intense debate, with some arguing that this could pose a challenge to other motorists.

Yesterday's launch at the Oxford Road office of the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) was hailed as a watershed moment for the deaf to be given the right.

In 2005, the regulation was amended to pave the way, but for some four years bureaucracy prevented members of the deaf community from legally sitting in the driver's seat. Not anymore.

The visually impaired Floyd Morris, former senator, was excited to finally see the light at the end of a very long and dark tunnel.

"I'm really delighted that this thing has come to full fruition," he said.

"It (has been) years of disappointment on the part of the disabled community and I think that we have come full circle now," he added.

Dearth in leadership

Andrew Gallimore, minister of state in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, said a dearth in leadership hampered the right of deaf persons to drive.

"It is a very important moment in our history," said Gallimore.

The sign-language course is expected to end early next month. Gallimore believes that the first licence to be issued to a deaf person will happen shortly after the completion of the course.

Corporal Bryan Answer, stationed at the Ferry Police Station, is among the initial batch being trained. "Up to Monday, I was not knowledgeable with sign language. Today, I can spell my name with sign language," he said.

The officer believes that members of the deaf community have a right to drive like anybody else.

"I was never discriminatory ... giving them a driver's licence is a welcomed moved. It is the right thing to do," he said.

Asked if he thinks he will have to ticket a deaf driver in the near future, Answer answered in the negative.

"Not at all," he said.

The court was forced to grant an early adjournment yesterday because the man accused of the murder of 64-year-old Ambassador Peter King was hungry.

Sheldon Pusey, 25, who is charged with King's murder, complained to his lawyer, Berry Bryan, during the luncheon adjournment that he was feeling ill because he had not eaten all day.

Bryan informed Senior Puisne Judge Marva McIntosh who is presiding at the trial in the Home Circuit Court.

The judge was not pleased to hear that the correctional services had stopped providing lunch for prisoners on trial in the courts. The jurors had to wait until close to 3 p.m. for court to resume after the luncheon adjournment. The judge apologised to the jurors for the late start and informed them of Pusey's situation.

Remedy situation

The judge said she made contact with the prison authority and hoped the situation would be remedied. The judge said she had to adjourn court for the rest of the day because by the time Pusey was given something to eat, it would be time to adjourn the court.

Some of the policemen manning the court explained that for several years, prisoners on trial were not provided with lunch. They said if relatives did not take lunch for the prisoners, none was provided.

Pusey's trial began on January 19, and a policeman disclosed that most times it was Pusey's lawyer who provided lunch for him. Pusey's relatives have not been attending court.

The judge disclosed that Pusey is affected by sickle cell and every effort should be made for him to have his lunch. She told the police to ensure that Pusey was not taken back to court in the days until he had eaten.

King was fatally stabbed and chopped at his house at Waterloo Road, St Andrew, between March 19 and 20, 2006. Pusey said in his defence that King was forcing him to be intimate with him and he stabbed King.

The judge will continue her summation to the jury when the trial resumes today.

St Bess fire truck disabled

The parish of St Elizabeth is now without a fire unit, following a three-vehicle accident along the Luana to Middle Quarters road Tuesday.

According to head of the St Elizabeth Fire Department, Senior Deputy Superintendent Homer Morris, the Black River unit was involved in an accident with a Leyland truck and a Toyota RAV4 between Point and Baptist.

Morris said one firefighter received minor injuries as a result of the accident.

Mechanical problems

The crash occurred as the Black River unit headed to Middlesex, St Elizabeth, after assisting in extinguishing a fire at Long Hill in Whitehouse, Westmoreland.

With the fire truck down, Morris said efforts were being made to have the Junction unit, which has been out of service because of mechanical problems, up and running by the end of the week.

In the meantime, Morris said fire department officials would be seeking assistance from bauxite-mining firm, Alumina Partners of Jamaica.

Since the start of the year, the St Elizabeth fire department has responded to almost 500 fire calls. The majority of them have been bush fires.

Milton Jones, technician, showcases his invention, which calibrates carburettors. - Photo by Rasbert Turner

It took only a Volkswagen engine and an iron frame to turn Milton Jones, a self-made auto-electronics specialist in Gordon Pen, St Catherine, into the hottest thing since the proverbial sliced bread.

His board-structure workshop proudly boasts the sign, 'C and A Plus Carburettor Actuator'. The grandiloquent pronouncement declares a passion for inventiveness that has piqued the interest of passers-by and elicited praise from residents and clients.

Inside his humble workshop on Marl Road is a veritable metallic behemoth - a mass of nuts, bolts, wires and gauges - that hums with hope.

Mr Fix-it

Jones, community Mr Fix-it and a big dreamer, beams with pride as he views his work-in-progress.

"Yes, man, a me dem call 'Carny' and a my little place dis and a me build this," he said, pointing to the multicoloured machine.

Jones, a carburettor technician, said that his hunger to experiment and boost his business potential spurred him to put heart and hands into action. He said it took him about three months to put the material together.

"The machine was born out of necessity, as we had a smaller one. However, it could not take the volume of work, so the Volkswagen engine and a battery started this one you're looking at." Jones told The Gleaner.

Makeshift treasure

He said his makeshift treasure is able to calibrate carburettors, especially twin-cams.

If Jones is proud, Gordon Pen is ecstatic. One of many low-income neigbourhoods near to Spanish Town, the community's reputation has been marred by crime and violence, which too often hog the headlines. But now, Gordon Pen might just have received the public relations polish it needs.

The esteem boost has spread to residents and patrons.

"You can see that the man is a genius, as he built the machine from the frame. Him only need to get the carburettors, as it work like a dream," remarked Edward Russell, a visitor to the shop.

"More of this type of development we want to see around here, instead of the bad vibes."

Another man, Guy Laing, was equally effusive.

"If the work was not impressive, then I would not be here. The carburettor in my Nissan stop working and the machine have it fixed without mi driving come here," said Guy Laing.

So pleased is Jones with his invention that he has even tried to have it patented, he said. However, those efforts crashed, because the core material was not built by him.

Further upgrades

While Jones continues to repair carburettors, he still has eyes on further upgrades to his calibrator. That sense of self-belief has not been lost on folks like his assistant, Glen Williams, who thinks the 'invention' could blow a wind of positive change through the community.

'Carny' the carburettor man could just be the man to rev up Gordon Pen.

Following reports of an internal gang feud in Spanish Town's notorious Clansman gang, incarcerated gang leader Tesha Miller has sent a message to The STAR, denying any internal feud.

"No feud between no gang member in none of our communities. I work closely with all communities, we are more tightly knit than before," were the words from Miller, as dictated by the gang's spokesperson, Busy.

Other members in the stronghold of De La Vega echoed the sentiments and regarded a murder on Sorletts road as the misconception that brought about this view.

"A di killing wa day ya have people a seh so, but everybody know seh di don a seh peace fi buil up di party ting," said the member.

Lone gunman

Police reports on that incident say about 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Shane Hill, 21, was walking in his community along Sorletts road, Spanish Town, when he was pounced upon by a lone gunman and shot. He died on the spot.

Although the Clansman gang is known for its disreputable background, gang spokesman Busy says they are doing positive things now, adding that they and rival gang, One Order, have seen new-found unison through sport and scholarship programmes.

"Right now, we have an Under-13 football programme that communities from both sides (gangs) are benefiting from, as well as four scholarships for a hair and nail school in Spanish Town, each worth $80,000, two of which we gave to One Order to give out on dem side," said Busy.

Despite their alleged philanthropy, head of Kingfish and the National Intelligence Bureau, Assistant Commissioner Glen-more Hines, says the police will not stop until the gang is dismantled.

Major organised gang

"Whether there is an internal feud or not in the (Clansman) gang, the police have been monitoring this organisation for some time and it is identified as a major organised gang, to which we are mandated to dismantle and to those that seek to establish them as a legitimate organisation, be aware that they will and will always be viewed as a criminal entity," said ACP Hines.
